EMBOSSED ON EACH BUTTON IS A BEAVER ON A BRANCH, BETWEEN THE WORDS "CANADIAN PACIFIC". THERE ARE TWO SIMILAR BUTTONS ON EACH CUFF, EXCEPT SMALLER. LEFT CUFF ALSO HAS 8 BRASS BARS SEWN ON VERTICALLY. THERE ARE TWO DOUBLE BESOM POCKETS ON OUTER RIGHT HIP. THERE IS ALSO A DOUBLE BESOM POCKET ON OUTER LEFT HIP, AND A WELT POCKET ON OUTER, LEFT BREAST. THERE ARE MATCHING POCKETS ON INSIDE OF COAT. INSIDE OF COAT IS LINED WITH BLACK SATIN, EXCEPT FOR POCKETS AND SLEEVES WHICH ARE LINED WITH IVORY COTTON. LINING ON INSIDE RIGHT OF JACKET IS FRAYED.

INFORMATION WAS GATHERED FROM EMAIL CONTACT WITH ROBERT’S GREAT NIECE NOREEN BISHOP, AND THE 1981 OYEN & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY BOOK MANY TRAILS CROSSED HERE. IT WAS FOUND THAT ROBERT ERNEST “BOB” BISHOP WAS BORN IN DAVENPORT, NORTH DAKOTA ON MARCH 27TH 1903, AND IMMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1910 WITH HIS FAMILY. THEY CAME TO HOMESTEAD IN EXCEL, ALBERTA. BISHOP STARTED WORKING FOR THE CPR IN 1923 AS A PART TIME JOB, AND ON NOVEMBER 12TH 1925 HE MARRIED MAY FLORA LITTLEFORD ON THE FARM IN EXCEL. IN ADDITION TO HIS RAIL JOB HE ALSO RAN THE STORE IN EXCEL. WHEN WAR BROKE OUT IN 1939, BISHOP BEGAN WORKING FULL TIME FOR THE CPR. HE LATER MOVED TO KELOWNA, B.C. LIGHT BLUE COLLARED SHIRT. THERE ARE SEVEN WHITE, PEARLIZED BUTTONS DOWN THE FRONT OF THE SHIRT. THERE ARE TWO POCKETS, EACH WITH ONE BUTTON, ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CHEST. A LOGO IS EMBROIDERED ON THE LEFT CHEST WITH “LHB” IN WHITE. THE LOGO IS AN INVERTED MAROON TRIANGLE WITH A WHITE BORDER. THERE IS A PARTIAL HANDICAP SYMBOL IN THE CENTER, EMBROIDERED IN WHITE. THE INSIDE TAG ON THE BACK OF THE COLLAR READS, “MARK’S … XL”. THE TAG STATES IT IS A COTTON/POLYESTER SHIRT. THE SLEEVES ARE 61.5 CM LONG. VERY GOOD – EXCELLENT CONDITION. THERE IS A LOOSE THREAD AT THE TOP BUTTON, NEAR THE COLLAR AND ONE ON THE INSIDE TRIM AT THE FRONT BOTTOM LEFT SIDE.

THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT BEGAN IN 1975 WHEN THE KIWANIS CLUB DONATED THE FIRST VAN. ON AUGUST 1, 2007 – AFTER 32 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY – THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE. AT THAT POINT, THE ASSOCIATION HAD A FLEET OF 20 BUSES – MANY OF WHICH WERE DONATED BY LOCAL SERVICE CLUBS – THAT WERE ALL TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY. THE NAME OF THE SERVICE BECAME ACCESS-A-RIDE UNDER THE CITY’S MANAGEMENT. THESE ARTIFACTS WERE DONATED BY A LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBER, LYNN SPRING. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON APRIL 12, 2016 WITH SPRING. HE EXPLAINS, “I WAS A MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR HALF A DOZEN YEARS AT LEAST AND SOME OF THESE ITEMS WERE GIVEN TO ME BY THE DRIVERS. THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STARTED IN 1975 AND ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO, LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STOPPED THEIR CHARTER AS A NOT- FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION BECAUSE OF THE NATIONAL RULING IN TRANSPORTATION THAT MUNICIPALITIES WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCESSIBILITY RIDES, HANDICAP TRANSPORTATION. SO THE CITY TOOK OVER ALL OF THE BUSES, THEY PURCHASED THEM AND MOST OF THE DRIVERS WENT OVER TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE BECAUSE WE HAD, I BELIEVE, TWENTY-SIX AT THAT TIME AND YOU JUST DON’T JUST DON’T FIND TWENTY-SIX DRIVERS. THAT WAS PART OF THE AGREEMENT ON SALE THAT THEY WOULD TAKE THE BUSES. WE TOOK OUR PLATES OFF AND THE NEXT DAY CITY PUT THEIR PLATES ON AND THEIR INSURANCE. THE DRIVERS WENT OVER EVENTUALLY. THEY WERE WEARING THE CITY TRANSIT, LETHBRIDGE CITY TRANSIT UNIFORMS.” OF HIS TIME AS A BOARD MEMBER, SPRING SAID, “I CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN [2005]… THE MANAGER OF THE DAY, MURRAY CAMPBELL, WAS A LONGTIME FRIEND OF MINE AND HE ASKED ME [TO BE ON THE BOARD], AND I THOUGHT WELL IT IS A VERY WORTHWHILE ORGANIZATION. IT WAS A NOT-FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND DIDN’T INVOLVE A LOT OF HOURS.” SPRING WAS ON THE BOARD UNTIL 2011. SPRING REFERRED TO HIMSELF AS “A COLLECTOR AT HEART” AND AS A RESULT GATHERED THE DONATED ARTIFACTS DURING THE LAST DAYS OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION IN 2011. THEY WERE IN HIS POSSESSION FOR 5 TO 7 YEARS. HE EXPLAINS, “WELL I WAS ONE OF THREE THAT CLOSED DOWN AND CLOSED OUT HANDI BUS. WE HAD TO FILE WITH TAX CANADA AND OF COURSE, WORKERS COMP AND ALL THOSE THINGS SO FINALLY WE’RE AT THAT STAGE WHERE WE CAN GET RID OF A LOT OF THE PAPER RECORDS. IT PROMPTED THAT I SHOULD MAYBE DONATE THESE TO THE GALT MUSEUM FOR PROSPERITY… [T]HAT’S JUST MY NATURE, I GUESS, TO RETAIN THINGS AND SAY ‘WELL SOMEBODY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THIS IN A FUTURE DATE.’” SPRING WOULD HAVE WORN THIS SHIRT AS A BOARD MEMBER: ”WE WOULD WEAR THAT AT FUNDRAISERS AND DIFFERENT OCCASIONS LIKE THAT. THE ODD TIME AT THE BOARD MEETINGS, BUT MAINLY THE FUNDRAISERS, OR WHEN WE HAD MEDIA PEOPLE OR, SOME RECORDING OF THAT NATURE.” IT IS IDENTICAL TO THE SHIRTS WORN BY THE HANDI-BUS DRIVERS. SPRING DESCRIBES THE SHIRT’S DESIGN, “IT’S A DENIM SHIRT, AND OF COURSE A LOT OF OUR MATERIAL WAS FROM MARK’S WORK WAREHOUSE AS YOU SEE ON THE LABEL. REFLECTIVE HARNESS MADE FROM ELASTIC, NEON YELLOW MATERIAL. THERE IS SILVER, REFLECTIVE COATING DOWN THE CENTER OF THE WHOLE HARNESS. THE HARNESS IS SUSPENDER STYLE AND CROSSES AT THE BACK. THERE IS A BLACK PLASTIC BUCKLE AT THE FRONT CENTER OF THE WAIST AND 4 BLACK PLASTIC STRAP ADJUSTORS ON EACH STRAP (ONE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE WAIST). THE TAG IS PLACED WHERE THE TWO SHOULDER STRAPS CROSS AND READS “NORTH… LOT 113485 APR/13/2006”. SIDE STRAPS ARE EACH APPROXIMATELY 122 CM IN LENGTH AND 3.7 CM IN WIDTH. THE WAIST BAND IS THE SAME WIDTH AND 111.5 IN LENGTH. GOOD CONDITION: MINOR WEAR/LOSS OF THE SILVER REFLECTIVE COATING. THERE IS SLIGHT STAINING OVERALL WITH A LARGE, RED STAIN ON THE INSIDE OF THE RIGHT STRAP (ON PERSON) OF THE HARNESS. THERE ARE LOOSE THREADS ON MANY PLACES OF THE SEAMS.

IT’S NOT LIKE YOUR OTHER TRANSIT WHERE THE DRIVER STAYS IN THE SEAT, PEOPLE ARE AMBULATORY AND GET OFF AND ON. A HANDI BUS DRIVER HAS A LOT MORE WORK TO DO IN THAT HE UNLOADS, HE HAS TO LOWER THE RAMP, LOCK DOWN THE WHEELCHAIR, HAS TO MAKE SURE IT’S A CERTAIN REVERSE DIRECTION SO THE WEIGHT DISPLACEMENT COMES UP. THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT BEGAN IN 1975 WHEN THE KIWANIS CLUB DONATED THE FIRST VAN. ON AUGUST 1, 2007 – AFTER 32 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY – THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE. AT THAT POINT, THE ASSOCIATION HAD A FLEET OF 20 BUSES – MANY OF WHICH WERE DONATED BY LOCAL SERVICE CLUBS – THAT WERE ALL TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY. THE NAME OF THE SERVICE BECAME ACCESS-A-RIDE UNDER THE CITY’S MANAGEMENT. THESE ARTIFACTS WERE DONATED BY A LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBER, LYNN SPRING. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON APRIL 12, 2016 WITH SPRING. HE EXPLAINS, “I WAS A MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR HALF A DOZEN YEARS AT LEAST AND SOME OF THESE ITEMS WERE GIVEN TO ME BY THE DRIVERS. THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STARTED IN 1975 AND ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO, LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STOPPED THEIR CHARTER AS A NOT- FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION BECAUSE OF THE NATIONAL RULING IN TRANSPORTATION THAT MUNICIPALITIES WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCESSIBILITY RIDES, HANDICAP TRANSPORTATION. SO THE CITY TOOK OVER ALL OF THE BUSES, THEY PURCHASED THEM AND MOST OF THE DRIVERS WENT OVER TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE BECAUSE WE HAD, I BELIEVE, TWENTY-SIX AT THAT TIME AND YOU JUST DON’T JUST DON’T FIND TWENTY-SIX DRIVERS. THAT WAS PART OF THE AGREEMENT ON SALE THAT THEY WOULD TAKE THE BUSES. WE TOOK OUR PLATES OFF AND THE NEXT DAY CITY PUT THEIR PLATES ON AND THEIR INSURANCE. THE DRIVERS WENT OVER EVENTUALLY. THEY WERE WEARING THE CITY TRANSIT, LETHBRIDGE CITY TRANSIT UNIFORMS.” OF HIS TIME AS A BOARD MEMBER, SPRING SAID, “I CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN [2005]… THE MANAGER OF THE DAY, MURRAY CAMPBELL, WAS A LONGTIME FRIEND OF MINE AND HE ASKED ME [TO BE ON THE BOARD], AND I THOUGHT WELL IT IS A VERY WORTHWHILE ORGANIZATION. IT WAS A NOT-FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND DIDN’T INVOLVE A LOT OF HOURS.” SPRING WAS ON THE BOARD UNTIL 2011. SPRING REFERRED TO HIMSELF AS “A COLLECTOR AT HEART” AND AS A RESULT GATHERED THE DONATED ARTIFACTS DURING THE LAST DAYS OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION IN 2011. THEY WERE IN HIS POSSESSION FOR 5 TO 7 YEARS. HE EXPLAINS, “WELL I WAS ONE OF THREE THAT CLOSED DOWN AND CLOSED OUT HANDI BUS. WE HAD TO FILE WITH TAX CANADA AND OF COURSE, WORKERS COMP AND ALL THOSE THINGS SO FINALLY WE’RE AT THAT STAGE WHERE WE CAN GET RID OF A LOT OF THE PAPER RECORDS. IT PROMPTED THAT I SHOULD MAYBE DONATE THESE TO THE GALT MUSEUM FOR PROSPERITY… [T]HAT’S JUST MY NATURE, I GUESS, TO RETAIN THINGS AND SAY ‘WELL SOMEBODY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THIS IN A FUTURE DATE.’” THE WINTER JACKET WAS WORN BY A DRIVER NAMED WAYNE HALES WHO WAS ONE OF THE LHB EMPLOYEES WHO TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY WHEN THE ORGANIZATION WAS TAKEN OVER. WHEN SPRING WAS GATHERING ITEMS RELATED TO THE ASSOCIATION HE REACHED OUT TO HALES: “I SPOKE WITH WAYNE HALES, AND SAID I HAD SOME OTHER THINGS DID HE HAVE ANYTHING? ON AUGUST 22, 2017, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED RAYMOND AND INGRID SPEAKER REGARDING THEIR DONATION OF A CREE-MADE WOOL COAT. SPEAKER WAS RAISED IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA AND WAS ELECTED A MINISTER IN THE ALBERTA GOVERNMENT IN 1963 WITH THE SOCIAL CREDIT PARTY. SPEAKER WAS INVOLVED WITH THE FORMATION OF THE WHITE PAPER ON HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT IN 1967. RAYMOND SPEAKER PROVIDED BACKGROUND ON THE COAT IN HIS POSSESSION, NOTING, “ONE OF [THE] PROJECTS [I WORKED ON AS A MINISTER] WAS TO HAVE A NATIVE PROJECT THAT PRODUCED THESE JACKETS…AFTER THAT, I BOUGHT ONE FOR MY WIFE, AND ONE FOR MYSELF FOR, I THINK, $100.00 EACH [IN 1971].” “I‘D HAVE TO SAY WE DIDN’T [WEAR THE COATS ANNUALLY], AND NOT BECAUSE OF ANY REASON. WE DID IT. WE TRIED TO MEET ALL THE OBJECTIVES OF SELF-DETERMINATION, SELF-MANAGEMENT, FULLY-FUNDED PROJECT THAT SHOULD HAVE WORKED. IT WORKED FOR A WHILE, BUT, ALL-OF-A-SUDDEN, IT DIDN’T.” RAYMOND SPEAKER ELABORATED ON HIS TIME AS AN ALBERTA GOVERNMENT MINISTER AND THE PROJECTS THAT LED TO THE CREATION OF THE COAT, “I WAS ASSOCIATED WITH PRESTON MANNING, WHO WAS THE SON OF THE PREMIER OF THE PROVINCE. AT THE TIME, HE AND I WERE AT UNIVERSITY TOGETHER, AND TALKED A LOT ABOUT GOVERNMENT AND WHAT FORMATS GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE, NOT ONLY PROVINCIALLY BUT FEDERALLY. IN 1967, BETWEEN PRESTON, HIS DAD, AND MYSELF, AND ONE OTHER RESEARCHER, ERIC SCHMIDT, WE DECIDED THAT THE SOCIAL CREDIT GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE A NEW OBJECTIVE, AND BE DEFINED IN A BETTER AND CLEARER WAY THAN IT WAS. [THE PARTY] NEEDED TO BE RE-VITALIZED IN TERMS OF ITS OBJECTIVE. WORKING TOGETHER WITH THESE FOUR PARTICIPANTS, WE CAME UP WITH A WHITE PAPER, CALLED THE WHITE PAPER ON HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, IN MARCH OF 1967, AND PRESENTED IT TO THE ALBERTA LEGISLATURE. THERE WAS ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE PROVINCE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE PEOPLE OF THE PROVINCE NEEDED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF ATTENTION IN TERMS OF SOCIAL GROWTH, AND SO WE SAID TO OURSELVES, THERE MUST BE SOME WAY OF INTEGRATING ECONOMIC GROWTH WITH SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT. THE WHITE PAPER DOES THAT. IT TALKS ABOUT IF YOU CAN GROW THE ECONOMY OF THE PROVINCE, YOU SHOULD ALSO PARALLEL THAT WITH SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT GROWTH. IN THE WHITE PAPER, WE SET OUT THAT OBJECTIVE, IN 1967. AFTER THE LEGISLATURE ACCEPTED THE PAPER, THEN WE HAD TO DEVELOP IT. I WAS APPOINTED, SHORTLY AFTER THAT, THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, AND ONE OF MY RESPONSIBILITIES WAS TO DEVELOP THE CONCEPTS OF THE WHITE PAPER. IN ORDER TO BRING TOGETHER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, WE SET UP A BODY CALLED THE HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY, AND IT HAD HUGE POWERS TO CHANGE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS OF GOVERNMENT, REORGANIZE THE BUDGETING OF THE GOVERNMENT, AS A WHOLE, TO FOCUS ON THIS NEW OBJECTIVE. I WAS THE CHAIRMAN OF THAT HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY.” “ONE OF THE PROGRAMS THAT WE ESTABLISHED…WAS TO WORK AND COOPERATE WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. I GOT ON THE PLANE AT MIDNIGHT, FLEW DOWN [TO OTTAWA] WITH TWO OF MY STAFF, WALKED OFF THE AIRPLANE, [AND] DRAGGED ME INTO HIS OFFICE. I SAID TO HIM, "WE’RE HERE. WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT A SPECIAL AREA, ESPECIALLY SLAVE LAKE. WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED?” “[HE SAID] “OH, RAY, I WOULD LOVE TO DO THAT.” I SAID, “IF WE HAD A PROPOSAL, WOULD YOU ACCEPT IT, AND COULD WE MOVE ON IT, AND WOULD YOU BE BEHIND IT?” [MANCHARD SAID] “RAY, I’D ENDORSE IT RIGHT NOW, IF YOU HAD A PROPOSAL.” I OPENED MY BRIEFCASE, AND PUT IT ON THE TABLE. I SAID, “HERE’S THE FIRST ONE.” IT WAS FOR $4,000,000, SO THEN WE STARTED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE SLAVE LAKE AREA, WITH THIS $4,000,000 PROJECT. THE OTHER PROJECT WE PUT TOGETHER WITH JEAN CHRETIEN WAS A PROJECT ON THE BLOOD RESERVE. WE SET UP KAINAI INDUSTRIES. THIS WAS THE BUILDING OF HOMES, AND WE BUILT A WHOLE BUNCH OF HOMES. WIDE PEAKED LAPELS WITH ONE BUTTON HOLE ON EACH SIDE. POCKETS AT FRONT ON LEFT AND RIGHT WITH SQUARE CUT FLAPS. FRONT LEFT BREAST POCKET WITHOUT FLAP. PADDED SHOULDERS. ACCORDING TO INFORMATION PROVIDED BY DONOR DOUG HEGLAND AT THE TIME OF DONATION, THE JACKET WAS ACQUIRED IN 1983 FROM A LOCKER AT THE "OLD STATION" IN LETHBRIDGE WHEN STAFF MOVED TO A NEW TRAIN STATION AT KIPP YARD. THE DONOR FOUND THE JACKET AS A RESULT OF WANTING SOME OF THE STATION’S OLD LOCKERS. DONOR STARTED A CAREER WITH THE CPR IN 1978. ACCORDING TO INFORMATION SOLICITED FROM BRUNO BACEDA’S SON LONNIE IN FEBRUARY 2012, “BRUNO BACEDA LIVED IN THE LETHBRIDGE AREA HIS WHOLE LIFE. HE WAS A BAGGAGE MASTER WITH THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY IN 1959 AND WORKED FOR A WHILE AS CONDUCTOR.” ACCORDING TO HIS OBITUARY IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, “BRUNO JOHN BACEDA PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE ON DECEMBER 13, 2004 AT THE AGE OF 76.
