THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF MAYOR SHACKLEFORD WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM ARCHIVES CANADA ONLINE AND A LETHBRIDGE HERALD TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM MAY 31, 1992. A.W. SHACKLEFORD WAS BORN IN ESSEX, ENGLAND IN 1899 AND CAME TO CALGARY WITH HIS PARENTS IN 1909. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL HE TRAINED AS A DRAFTSMAN BUT WAS EMPLOYED BY THE FILM EXCHANGE AND FOX FILMS. IN 1921 HE WAS HIRED TO MANAGED THE KING'S THEATRE IN LETHBRIDGE AND BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH MARK ROGERS, A LETHBRIDGE BUSINESSMAN WHO OWNED THREE LOCAL MOVIE THEATRES. SHACKLEFORD ALSO BECAME PARTNER IN THE AMUSEMENT COMPANY THAT OPENED THE HENDERSON LAKE PAVILLION IN 1924. BY 1925 HE WAS PART-OWNER OF THE FORMER EMPRESS THEATRE ON 5TH AVENUE SOUTH, RENAMING IT THE ROXY. HE THEN TEAMED UP WITH THE FAMOUS PLAYERS COMPANY TO REMODEL THE FORMER PALACE THEATRE AND RENAME IT THE CAPITOL. SHACKLEFORD ALSO OPENED THE THEATRE IN THE FORMER COLLEGE MALL, BUILT THE 960-SEAT PARAMOUNT THEATRE ON 4TH AVENUE SOUTH, AND TOOK OVER OPERATION OF THE DIRVE-IN THEATRE AT THE SOUTH CITY LIMITS. HE WAS ALSO MADE AN HONOURARY LIFE MEMBER OF THE ALBERTA SUGAR BEET GROWERS ASSOCIATION FOR 31 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE ORGANIZATION, WHERE HE SERVED AS LABOUR ADVISOR AND SECRETARY/MANAGER. HARRY ALSO SPENT OVER 40 YEARS WORKING AS A FILM PROJECTIONIST, HAVING WORKED IN VARIOUS THEATRES INCLUDING: IN LETHBRIDGE, THE ROXY, EMPRESS, CAPITOL, AND PARAMOUNT; IN BOW ISLAND, RED DEER, STETTLER, AND CALGARY. HARRY WAS ALSO AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LIONS CLUB IN LETHBRIDGE. DURING WWII HARRY WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE LION INFANTRY TEAM IN THE VICTORY LOAN CAMPAIGN. AN ARTICLE FROM JULY 6, 1943 RECOUNTS THAT HARRY WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AT SELLING WAR BONDS: “MR BOYSE … TOOK OUT A ‘STAMP-O-GRAM’ CARD AND WITH 18 CALLS SOLD $103 WORTH OF WAR SAVINGS STAMPS. A ‘DEPTH CHARGE’ COSTS $90 AND MR. BOYSE FEELS THAT HE WILL PERSONALLY BE ABLE TO SELL FOUR ‘DEPTH CHARGES’ FOR THE CORVETTE LETHBRIDGE.” ANOTHER ARTICLE FROM JUNE 18, 1943 EXPLAINS THAT HARRY HAD JUST COMPLETED A SUCCESSFUL TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE LIONS CLUB. THE ARTICLE CONTINUES SAYING: “’LIONS THROUGHOUT CANADA POINT WITH PRIDE TO THE $117,000 ALREADY SENT OVERSEAS FOR THIS CAUSE. THIS MONEY IS ENTRUSTED TO THE WAIFS AND STRAYS SOCIETY, WHICH ADMINISTERS HOMES FOR LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN EVACTUATED FROM TARGET AREAS, OR WHOSE PARENTS HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED IN THE ‘BLITZ’’, [MR. BOYSE] SAID.” IRENE BOYSE (NEE JOHNSON) WAS BORN IN BANTRY, ND ON AUGUST 20, 1908 AND MOVED TO CANADA IN 1909. SHE WAS RAISED AND EDUCATED IN THE FOREMOST, AB AREA. A PURPLE UNIFORM WITH A RED SASH AND LIGHT GREY UNDERCOAT. 1- 203.5 X 14.5. RED SASH HAS YELLOW CHINESE CHARACTERS WHICH EXTEND DOWN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE SASH. THE FRONT OF THE SASH IS COMPLETELY RED WITH THE CHARACTERS AND A YELLOW BORDER BEING THE EXCEPTIONS. THE BACK OF THE SASH IS COMPLETELY YELLOW WITH RED STITCHING ALONG THE EDGES. AT EITHER END, THERE ARE GOLD / YELLOW TASSELS. 2- 87.1 X 61.7 CM PURPLE OVERCOAT WITH IDENTICAL DESIGNS, DARKER THAN THE SURROUNDING FABRIC APPROXIMATELY 9.5 CM IN DIAMETER SPREAD EVENLY OVER IT. WIDE SLEEVES. HAS STAND UP COLLAR; JACKET HAS VENTS AT THE SIDE AND ONE IN BACK. HAS FROG CLOSURE, FORMED OUT OF SAME MATERIAL AS JACKET DOWN FRONT. 3- 178.5 X 39.5. GREY GOWN TO BE WORN UNDER THE OVERCOAT. HAS A NARROW, STAND UP COLLAR. ENTIRE FRONT OF GOWN IS OPEN. LEFT SIDE HAS A LARGE FLAP THAT OVERLAPS RIGHT FRONT AND COAT DOES UP AT THE SIDE WITH 5 FROG CLOSURES MADE FROM SAME MATERIAL AS GOWN. THERE IS ALSO A FROG CLOSURE AT NECK AND NEAR RIGHT SHOULDER. GOWN HAS LARGE VENTS ON SIDES FROM HEMLINE TO ABOUT KNEE HEIGHT. GOWN HAS VERY LONG SLEEVES.

THIS UNIFORM WAS SPECIFICALLY MADE FOR MAYOR CARPENTER (1986-2001) DURING HIS SECOND TRIP TO TAIWAN IN 1998 TO CELEBRATE THE 377TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RETURN OF THE GODDESS OF THE SEA, MATSU. DURING THIS TRIP MAYOR CARPENTER WAS GIVEN THE HONORARY POSITION OF TEMPLE BOARD MEMBER, AND BECAUSE OF THIS POSITION WAS GRANTED THE HONOR OF LEADING THE CEREMONIAL PARADE, AS WELL AS THAT OF MOVING THE MATSU STATUE FROM THE TEMPLE TO THE PARADE VEHICLE. NEITHER RECALLED HOW THE JAYCEES CAME INTO OWNERSHIP OF THE ARTIFACTS, AS THEIR ACQUISITION PREDATED BOTH EDMUNDSON AND RUSZNAK’S MEMBERSHIP IN THE CHAMBER. RESEARCH CONDUCTED INTO LETHBRIDGE’S GURNEY MUSEUM FOUND A CONNECTION BETWEEN ITS PROPRIETOR, WALTER GURNEY, AND THE JAYCEES, WHO ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE FROM THE APRIL 16, 1946 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ADVOCATED ON GURNEY’S BEHALF FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE TO THE FORMER BOARD OF TRADE BUILDING WHERE THE MUSEUM WAS HOUSED. AN ARTICLE FROM THE JULY 13, 1948 ISSUE OF THE HERALD DESCRIBES SOME OF THE FIRST NATIONS ARTIFACTS ON DISPLAY IN THE MUSEUM: “TOMAHAWKS, ARROW HEADS, PEACE PIPES, BEAD AND LEATHER WORK, CLOTHING AND WOODCRAFT”. UPON THE CLOSURE OF THE MUSEUM AND SALE OF GURNEY’S COLLECTION TO BELMORE SCHULTZ OF THE ALTAMONT MUSEUM IN COUTTS, MENTION WAS MADE IN A HERALD ARTICLE FROM MAY 16, 1961 OF “HISTORICAL INDIAN RELICS THAT BELONG TO THE JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAVE BEEN RETAINED IN THE CITY AND WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN PROPER DISPLAY FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE”. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ARTIFACTS WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE JAYCEES BY GURNEY DURING THE DISSOLUTION OF HIS MUSEUM, BUT NO FURTHER CONFIRMATION WAS FOUND. JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE) WITH FORMER LETHBRIDGE RESIDENTS THE LATE FRED BOTSFORD AND HIS LATE DAUGHTER DOROTHY CLARK. THIS FLIGHT SUIT WAS DONATED AS PART OF THE PERSONAL EFFECTS COLLECTED BY SENATOR JOYCE FAIRBAIRN (PC, CM) OVER HER NEARLY THREE DECADES AS A LIBERAL SENATOR FOR THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA. ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON INTERVIEWED FAIRBAIRN'S FORMER ASSISTANT, GLENN MILLER, ABOUT THE SUIT AND THE SENATOR'S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE LETHBRIDGE AIR SHOW. MILLER SAID: "THE FLIGHT SUIT CAME FROM THE AIR FORCE... SHE WORE IT DURING HER ROLE AS THE HONORARY AIR MARSHAL AT THE LETHBRIDGE AIR SHOW... FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 YEARS... [AS AIR MARSHAL] SHE BROUGHT GREETINGS FROM THE SENATE OF CANADA, AND SHE WAS ALSO INVOLVED IN VISITING WITH ALL THE PERFORMERS, AND WELCOMING THEM TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE... SHE WOULD DO WHATEVER SHE COULD TO ASSIST THE AIR SHOW COMMITTEE IN ACHIEVING A SUCCESSFUL AIR SHOW... ONE PARTICULAR YEAR, THERE WAS VERY LITTLE CANADIAN CONTENT SCHEDULED TO BE THERE, AND SHE HAD MANAGED TO TRACK DOWN THE MINISTER OF DEFENSE OVERSEAS, AND WITHIN 24 HOURS THERE WAS A HERCULES, REPRESENTING CANADA, AT THE AIR SHOW... SHE WAS ABLE TO INFLUENCE HAVING AN AIRCRAFT AT THE AIR SHOW WHEN JUST DAYS BEFORE THEY WERE TOLD DEFINITIVELY THAT NO, THERE'D BE NONE... SHE WORE [THE SUIT] WITH GREAT PRIDE, EVERY YEAR." THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF FAIRBAIRN WAS DEVELOPED BY GALT ARCHIVES INTERN KARISSA PATTON FOR THE 2013 EXHIBIT ‘GALT BABY TO SENATOR’: JOYCE FAIRBAIRN WAS BORN AT THE GALT HOSPITAL ON NOVEMBER 6, 1939. SHE GREW UP IN LETHBRIDGE WHERE SHE GOT HER FIRST EXPERIENCE AS A JOURNALIST AT THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD WHILE SHE WAS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL. FAIRBAIRN EARNED A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ENGLISH FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA IN 1960. FAIRBAIRN THEN LEFT LETHBRIDGE TO ATTEND CARLETON UNIVERSITY IN OTTAWA, ONTARIO WHERE SHE EARNED A BACHELOR OF JOURNALISM IN 1961. AFTER GRADUATION, FAIRBAIRN BEGAN WORKING FOR THE HERALD’S OTTAWA BUREAU, THE OTTAWA JOURNAL, AND UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL IN THE PARLIAMENTARY PRESS GALLERY. FAIRBAIRN WAS KNOWN AS ONE OF THE FIRST “FEMALE NEWSMEN.” SHE WORKED AS A JOURNALIST IN OTTAWA FROM 1961-1970 AND WAS THE FIRST JOURNALIST TO REPORT ON THE NEW CANADIAN FLAG SELECTION AS WELL AS COVERED JACKIE KENNEDY AND PRESIDENT KENNEDY’S VISIT TO OTTAWA IN 1961. THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD PROUDLY CONTINUED TO PUBLISH HER WORK FROM 1965-1969. IN 1970 FAIRBAIRN BECAME THE LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT AND, LATER, THE COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR FOR PRIME MINISTER PIERRE TRUDEAU. FAIRBAIRN WORKED WITH TRUDEAU UNTIL 1984 WHEN SHE WAS APPOINTED TO THE SENATE. SENATOR FAIRBAIRN QUICKLY BECAME KNOWN FOR ATTENDING SOUTHERN ALBERTAN MILESTONES, OPENINGS, CELEBRATIONS, AND EVEN THE OCCASIONAL CAKE DECORATING CONTEST. SENATOR FAIRBAIRN BECAME WELL KNOWN THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN ALBERTA BECAUSE, AS ONE CONSTITUENT COMMENTED, “SHE CARED ENOUGH TO COME”. SENATOR FAIRBAIRN ALSO BECAME INVOLVED WITH MANY ORGANIZATIONS AND CAUSES SUCH AS, THE PARALYMPICS, THE CALGARY STAMPEDE, BOOKS FOR BABIES, AND THE ALBERTA BIRDS OF PREY CENTRE. FAIRBAIRN WAS PRESENT FOR CELEBRATIONS IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA SUCH AS, LETHBRIDGE’S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, WHOOP UP DAYS, AND MANY UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE CONVOCATIONS. SENATOR FAIRBAIRN WAS ALSO AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE THERAPEUTIC RIDING ASSOCIATION WHERE SHE ADOPTED A HORSE NAMED “DOOLEY”. IN 2008 THE LETHBRIDGE THERAPEUTIC RIDING ASSOCIATION HONOURED SENATOR FAIRBAIRN WITH A LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP. SENATOR FAIRBAIRN’S DEVOTION TO CANADA AND THE SOUTHERN ALBERTAN COMMUNITY WAS ALSO RECOGNIZED BY MANY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. IN 1990 SHE WAS INAUGURATED INTO THE KAINAI CHIEFTAINSHIP, WHERE SHE RECEIVED THE NAME CHIEF MORNING BIRD WOMAN. FAIRBAIRN WAS ALSO MADE AN HONOURARY LIEUTENANT-COLONEL OF THE 18TH AIR DEFENSE REGIMENT, RCA. SHE WAS ALSO MADE A HONOURARY AIR MARSHAL AND FREQUENTLY ATTENDED THE INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW AT LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA. IN ADDITION, SHE WAS AWARDED WITH A HONOURARY DOCTORATE OF LAWS BY THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE IN 2004. WHILE FAIRBAIRN WAS KNOWN FOR BEING PRESENT IN THE SOUTHERN ALBERTAN COMMUNITY SHE WAS ALSO KNOWN FOR HER MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN PARLIAMENT. HER CAREER AS SENATOR BEGAN AS THE VICE-CHAIR OF THE NATIONAL LIBERAL CAUCUS AND THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN LIBERAL CAUCUS UNTIL 1991 WHEN SHE WAS APPOINTED CO-CHAIR OF THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE. BY 1993 SENATOR FAIRBAIRN WAS APPOINTED TO PRIVY COUNCIL AS THE FIRST WOMAN TO HOLD THE POSITION OF LEADER OF GOVERNMENT. SHE ALSO BECAME THE FIRST MINISTER WITH SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR LITERACY. IN 1997 SHE WAS APPOINTED THE SPECIAL ADVISOR ON LITERACY TO THE MINISTER OF HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT CANADA. IN ADDITION, SENATOR FAIRBAIRN WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND MAKING THE FAMOUS FIVE HONOURARY SENATORS AND ERECTING A HONOURARY STATUE CELEBRATING THE FAMOUS FIVE ON PARLIAMENT HILL. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY ON JOE HEALY WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM THE GALT ARCHIVES AND 'THE AMAZING DEATH OF CALFSHIRT: THREE HUNDRED YEARS OF BLACKFOOT HISTORY' BY HUGH DEMPSEY: POTAI'NA "FLYING CHIEF' JOE HEALY (LATER CALLED WOLF MOCCASIN) WAS BORN IN 1854 ON THE MONTANA BLACKFEET RESERVATION, TO THE LEADER OF THE BLOOD TRIBE, MANY BRAIDS. MANY BRAIDS HAD BECOME FRIENDLY WITH JOHN J. HEALY, CO-OPERATOR OF THE SUN RIVER CROSSING TRADING POST WITH ALFRED B. HAMILTON. DURING A ROUTINE VISIT TO THE TRADING POST, THE BLOODS' CAMP WAS RAIDED AT NIGHT BY A BAND OF PEND D'OREILLE WARRIORS. MANY BRAIDS, HIS WIFE, BABY AND TEENAGE DAUGHTER WERE KILLED IN THE CONFLICT, WHICH WAS WITNESSED BY JOHN HEALY. BEFORE HE DIED, MANY BRAIDS ASKED JOHN HEALY TO TAKE CARE OF HIS SON, FLYING CHIEF, THE ONLY SURVIVING MEMBER OF THE FAMILY. JOHN HEALY GAVE THE EIGHT YEAR OLD BOY THE NAME JOE HEALY, AND KEPT HIM AT THE TRADING POST UNTIL THE SUMMER, WHEN HE WAS ENROLLED IN THE SCHOOL AT NEARBY FORT SHAW. THERE JOE DEVELOPED HIS KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH. IN 1869, WHILE JOE WAS IN SCHOOL, HEALY AND HAMILTON WENT NORTH AND OPENED A TRADING POST AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE OLDMAN AND ST. MARY RIVERS; THIS POST WOULD BECOME KNOWN AS FORT WHOOP-UP AND WAS INFAMOUS FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WHISKEY TRADE AND VIOLENCE IN THE AREA UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF THE NORTH-WEST MOUNTED POLICE IN 1874. THREE YEARS LATER, DUE TO A DECLINE IN THE BUFFALO POPULATIONS AND THUS THE ROBE MARKET, HEALY CLOSED THE SUN RIVER CROSSING POST AND MOVED TO FORT BENTON. JOE WAS NOW SIXTEEN AND WAS COMPELLED TO RETURN TO HIS RELATIVES AMONG THE BLOODS. HE FOLLOWED THE LAST BUFFALO HERDS WITH BULL SHIELD, AND JOINED IN RELIGIOUS AND WARFARE ACTIVITIES OF THE TRIBE. WHEN THE BLOODS SETLLED ON THEIR RESERVE IN 1881, JOE WAS THE ONLY MEMBER OF THE TRIBE WHO WAS FLUENT IN BLACKFOOT AND ENGLISH. HE WAS AN OUTSPOKEN SUPPORTER OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS AND DEFIED ATTEMPTS BY THE GOVERNMENT TO SUPRESS DANCES AND FESTIVALS. HE MARRIED WIDE NOSTRILS, THE DAUGHTER OF IRON PIPE, AND THEY HAD SIX DAUGHTERS AND FOUR SONS. JOE WORKED AS AN OFFICIAL INTERPRETER FOR THE GOVERNMENT WHEN A NEW TREATY WAS MADE IN 1883, AND AS A SCOUT FOR THE RNWMP. IN LATER YEARS HE CO-ORDINATED FIRST NATIONS' PARTICIPATION IN THE LETHBRIDGE EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE. JOE HEALY DIED AT ST. PAUL'S MISSION ON THE BLOOD RESERVE IN 1936 AS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED PATRIARCHS OF THE BLOOD TRIBE.

SPEAKER WAS RAISED IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA AND WAS ELECTED A MINISTER IN THE ALBERTA GOVERNMENT IN 1963 WITH THE SOCIAL CREDIT PARTY. SPEAKER WAS INVOLVED WITH THE FORMATION OF THE WHITE PAPER ON HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT IN 1967. IN 1967, BETWEEN PRESTON, HIS DAD, AND MYSELF, AND ONE OTHER RESEARCHER, ERIC SCHMIDT, WE DECIDED THAT THE SOCIAL CREDIT GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE A NEW OBJECTIVE, AND BE DEFINED IN A BETTER AND CLEARER WAY THAN IT WAS. [THE PARTY] NEEDED TO BE RE-VITALIZED IN TERMS OF ITS OBJECTIVE. WORKING TOGETHER WITH THESE FOUR PARTICIPANTS, WE CAME UP WITH A WHITE PAPER, CALLED THE WHITE PAPER ON HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, IN MARCH OF 1967, AND PRESENTED IT TO THE ALBERTA LEGISLATURE. THERE WAS ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE PROVINCE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE PEOPLE OF THE PROVINCE NEEDED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF ATTENTION IN TERMS OF SOCIAL GROWTH, AND SO WE SAID TO OURSELVES, THERE MUST BE SOME WAY OF INTEGRATING ECONOMIC GROWTH WITH SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT. THE WHITE PAPER DOES THAT. IT TALKS ABOUT IF YOU CAN GROW THE ECONOMY OF THE PROVINCE, YOU SHOULD ALSO PARALLEL THAT WITH SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT GROWTH. IN THE WHITE PAPER, WE SET OUT THAT OBJECTIVE, IN 1967. AFTER THE LEGISLATURE ACCEPTED THE PAPER, THEN WE HAD TO DEVELOP IT. I WAS APPOINTED, SHORTLY AFTER THAT, THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, AND ONE OF MY RESPONSIBILITIES WAS TO DEVELOP THE CONCEPTS OF THE WHITE PAPER. ON APRIL 24, 2018, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED BARB CLARKE REGARDING HER DONATION OF A WEDDING GOWN AND GOING-AWAY ENSEMBLE. THE WEDDING GOWN AND GOING-AWAY ENSEMBLE WERE WORN BY CLARKE FOR HER WEDDING IN 1965. ON HER WEDDING AND HER SELECTION OF THE WEDDING GOWN, CLARKE RECALLED, “I WENT SHOPPING FOR A WEDDING DRESS, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST DRESS I TRIED ON. IT COST ME $75.00. I JUST BOUGHT IT, AND SAID, “OK, IT FITS. I GUESS WE’LL PUT IT AWAY, AND HANG IT UP IN THE CLOSET, AND IT’LL BE READY WHEN WE GET [IT].” AFTER SUMMER SCHOOL–-I GUESS I HAD WORKED HARD–-BUT I HAD LOST SOME WEIGHT. WHEN I STOOD IN THE DRESS THE HEM HUNG ON THE FLOOR, SO FOR THE PICTURES I HAD TO STAND UP ON MY TIPTOES, SO THAT THE DRESS WAS NOT CRUMPLING IN FRONT OF ME.” “[I BOUGHT IT FROM] ONE OF THE DRESS SHOPS ON FOURTH AVE. THERE’S A NUMBER OF DRESS SHOPS ALONG THAT STREET. IT WAS NOT A BIG SHOP; IT WAS NOT A BIG ‘WEDDING DRESS’ SHOP LIKE THEY HAVE NOW. IT WAS JUST A SHOP THAT SEEMED LIKE THEY HAD SOME WEDDING DRESSES IN ONE SECTION.” “[IT] WAS NOT A BIG POUFY DRESS. I JUST WANTED SOMETHING VERY SIMPLE, BUT SOMETHING VERY STRAIGHT AND EASY TO WEAR. I ALWAYS LIKED THE ‘HEAVY LACE’ KINDS OF THINGS. WHEN I FOUND THIS, AND IT WAS 75 DOLLARS, [IT] SEEMED LIKE A LOT OF MONEY, BUT I WAS TEACHING. I HAD ALSO BORROWED SOME MONEY FROM MY DAD TO BUY A CAR, AND I WASN’T MAKING MUCH MONEY. WHEN I WAS STARTING TEACHING, MY COUSIN WHO WAS WORKING IN A BANK MADE MORE MONEY THAN I DID, BUT I HAD TO PAY OFF THE LOAN TO MY DAD FOR THE CAR. BUT I WAS ABLE TO SQUEEZE OUT ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY THIS DRESS.” “THIS WAS SOMEWHAT OF A DEPARTURE BECAUSE IT WAS JUST A STRAIGHT SHEATHE DRESS. MANY OF THEM WERE—I DON’T WANT TO SAY MORE STRAPLESS, BUT THEY HAD MORE ‘BEADING’, MORE ‘NETTING’, MORE POUFY WITH CRINOLINES, AND WIDER DRESSES. I JUST WAS TRYING TO GO AS SIMPLE AS I COULD. THIS ONE HAD THIS NICE LITTLE TRAIN ON IT, SO THAT MADE IT A LITTLE BIT MORE DRESSY AND ELEGANT. IT WAS NOT OVER-THE-TOP WITH POUFINESS. I WAS BRIDESMAID A FEW TIMES-–SO I THOUGHT I WAS NEVER GOING TO BE A BRIDE. MOST OF THE OTHER GIRLS HAD WIDER DRESSES. THIS ONE HAS THE LONG SLEEVES WITH THE LITTLE POINTY THING ON YOUR WRIST AND HAND, AND NOT MANY OF THEM WERE LIKE THAT. MOST OF THEM WERE SHORTER SLEEVES. I’M NOT SURE THAT THIS ONE WOULD BE TOTALLY REPRESENTATIONAL [OF THE FASHION OF THE TIME], BUT IT ALWAYS ACQUIRED MANY COMPLIMENTS AS BEING A VERY NICE DRESS.” ON HER WEDDING, CLARKE ELABORATED, “[I MARRIED] DAVE CLARKE. HE GREW UP AT CASTOR, ALBERTA, WHICH IS 200 MILES NORTH OF TABER, ON HIGHWAY 36. WE MET WHEN WE WERE BOTH TEACHERS. WE MET AT CARSTAIRS. HE WAS TEACHING, AND I STARTED AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM THERE. WE MET IN THE SPRING, AND THEN I GOT A JOB THERE THAT FALL. WE DATED THROUGHOUT THAT YEAR, AND GOT MARRIED THE FOLLOWING YEAR.” “I GREW UP EAST OF MILK RIVER, IN THE COMMUNITY OF MASINASIN BY WRITING-ON-STONE PARK. I HAD COMPLETED MY HIGH SCHOOL IN MILK RIVER, AND THEN I WENT OFF TO CALGARY TO UNIVERSITY. TWO YEARS OF UNIVERSITY…WAS ALL THAT WAS REQUIRED AT THAT TIME. THERE WAS A TEACHER SHORTAGE, SO YOU COULD GET A JOB AFTER TWO YEARS, WITHOUT YOUR DEGREE, AND THAT’S WHAT I DID. THEN I MET DAVE. WE DECIDED TO GET MARRIED. DAVE WAS HELPING OUT HIS PARENTS AT THEIR FARM IN CASTOR BECAUSE THEY WERE MOVING A HOUSE DURING THAT SUMMER, AND HE WAS HELPING GET THAT HOUSE MOVED FOR HIS PARENTS. I WAS PICKING UP SOME COURSES AT EDMONTON UNIVERSITY. IT JUST HAPPENED THAT I HAD NOT FELT THAT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WEDDING. I JUST THOUGHT WE WOULD JUST GET MARRIED, AND HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS THERE, AND THAT WOULD BE IT. OF COURSE, MY MOM AND DAD SAID, “NO, WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A WEDDING.” SO, I SAID, “WELL, I’M GOING.” AFTER MY YEAR OF SCHOOL TEACHING IN CARSTAIRS THAT FINISHED THE END OF JUNE, I WAS DUE IN EDMONTON FOR MY SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES. SO, I SAID TO MOM AND DAD, “I GUESS IF YOU WANT A WEDDING, WE’LL TALK BY PHONE, BUT YOU’LL HAVE TO MAKE ALL THE ARRANGEMENTS, AND THE PLANS FOR IT.” SO, THEY DID. WE HAD THE WEDDING.” “[THE WEDDING] WAS ALL THE SAME DAY. THE WEDDING WAS AT ONE O’CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON [AT SOUTHMINSTER CHURCH]. THEN THE RECEPTION WAS A BIT EARLIER [AT EL RANCHO, WHICH IS NOW THE COAST HOTEL]. THEN WE DROVE DOWN TO THE FARM, AND WE HAD A BIT OF AN ‘OPEN HOUSE’ THERE. THE DANCE WAS AT NINE O’CLOCK [AT THE MASINASIN SCHOOL]. I WAS IN THE [WEDDING] DRESS UNTIL TOWARDS THE END OF THE WEDDING DANCE BECAUSE AT THE WEDDING DANCE YOU HAD TO HAVE YOUR FIRST DANCE WITH YOUR DAD. THEN I WENT BACK TO THE FARM, WHICH WAS ONLY THREE MILES AWAY, AND CHANGED INTO THE GOING AWAY OUTFIT. WE CAME BACK TO THE DANCE, AND SAID GOODBYE TO EVERYBODY THERE, AND THEN WE LEFT FROM THERE.” “IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN A COMMUNITY EVENT. I WAS THE YOUNGEST IN MY FAMILY, AND THE ONLY GIRL. MOM AND DAD HAD BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY, AND CERTAINLY HOSTING A WEDDING FOR YOUR DAUGHTER WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO THEM. I GREW UP THINKING, “HUH, IT DOESN’T MATTER TO ME IF I HAVE A WEDDING OR NOT.” BUT IT CERTAINLY WAS TO THEM, AND TO THE EXTENDED FAMILY IT WAS IMPORTANT. I WAS AMAZED – EVEN WHEN I LOOK THROUGH MY WEDDING BOOK NOW – ALL OF THE AUNTS AND UNCLES THAT CAME. SOME CAME FROM THE UNITED STATES, AND DAVE’S UNCLE, WHO WAS MASTER OF CEREMONIES AT THE RECEPTION, WAS THERE FROM EDMONTON. I WAS AMAZED THAT PEOPLE WOULD COME. I DIDN’T THINK THAT I WAS THAT IMPORTANT THAT ANYBODY WOULD COME, BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY, VERY NICE OCCASION, EVERYBODY HAD A VERY GOOD TIME. IT WAS CERTAINLY THE INTRODUCTION OF THE TWO FAMILIES TOGETHER. I RECOGNIZED AFTER-–SOME YEARS LATER-–THAT WEDDINGS ARE HAPPY OCCASIONS, AND THAT IF EXTENDED FAMILIES DON’T GET TOGETHER FOR HAPPY OCCASIONS, THEY OFTEN GET TOGETHER JUST FOR FUNERALS AND MORE SAD OCCASIONS. I CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND NOW HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS TO MY PARENTS, AND THAT IT WAS A GOOD OCCASION FOR THE WHOLE EXTENDED FAMILY.” “THE WAY THE SUMMER PROGRESSED, DAVE WAS VERY BUSY WITH HIS PARENTS…AND I WAS BUSY AT SUMMER SCHOOL. IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL, YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE CRAMMING, AND TAKING CLASSES, AND YOU’RE DOING EXAMS. EVERYTHING IS FAST BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO GET IT ALL DONE IN 6 WEEKS, AND YOU’RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GETTING A FULL CREDIT FOR YOUR COURSE. MY FINAL EXAM WAS ON A TUESDAY, AND I PACKED UP MY THINGS, AND WENT TO CASTOR ON THE WEDNESDAY. [I] PICKED UP DAVE, AND WE CAME TO LETHBRIDGE ON THE THURSDAY. WE MET WITH THE MINISTER ON THE THURSDAY, AND HE SAID THAT HE WAS BEGINNING TO WONDER IF THERE WAS A BRIDE AND GROOM BECAUSE HE HADN’T MET US…WE HAD THE REHEARSAL ON FRIDAY; THE WEDDING ON SATURDAY. FOR OUR HONEYMOON, WE WENT DOWN TO SANDPOINT AND COEUR D’ ALENE ON A LITTLE TRIP DOWN THERE. ONE WEEK LATER WE WERE IN A SMALL TOWN, NEIGHBOURING TO CASTOR, WHERE WE HAD TEACHING JOBS BECAUSE THE SCHOOL YEAR WAS TO START. WE HAD NO TIME TO SET UP A LITTLE TEACHERAGE. THE SCHOOL BOARD THERE RENTED US A HOUSE…THAT WAS HOW WE STARTED. IT WASN’T A VERY GRAND BEGINNING.” “[LETHBRIDGE WAS THE MID-POINT] TO ACCOMMODATE THE FAMILIES. MOM HAD MADE THE ARRANGEMENTS, SO I THINK IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN SOMETHING TO DO WITH WHETHER OR NOT THEY COULD HAVE THE RECEPTION CLOSE BY WHERE THE WEDDING TOOK PLACE. BECAUSE I WENT TO SUNDAY SCHOOL AND BELONGED TO THE CHURCH IN MILK RIVER – SO DID MY PARENTS –WE WERE AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED CHURCH. SOUTHMINSTER WAS DEFINITELY NOT OUR HOME CHURCH AT THAT TIME.” CLARKE SPOKE TO HER MOTIVES FOR KEEPING AND DONATING THE WEDDING GOWN AND GOING-AWAY ENSEMBLE, STATING, “IT’S ALWAYS [BEEN] EASY TO KEEP IT. I DON’T THINK I’M A HOARDER, BUT I DO LOVE SENTIMENTAL THINGS, AND I HAVE MY MOTHER’S WEDDING DRESS AND GOING-AWAY OUTFIT. THEY ARE VALUABLE PIECES. THIS DRESS AND THIS OUTFIT, I HAD IT OUT AT OUR 25TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. I COULDN’T WEAR IT MYSELF BECAUSE MY ARMS CHANGED, BUT MY NIECE WORE IT, AND WE HAD A BIG PARTY-–FAMILY PARTY–-FOR OUR 25TH. HAS ROUND COLLAR WITH RED AND BRONZE COLORED EDGING WITH GEOMETRIC PATTERNS ON IT. CHASUBLE HAS FABRIC CROSS WITH ARMS IN "Y" SHAPE ON FRONT AND BACK. CROSS IS MADE FROM 8CM WIDE NYLON BAND WITH GERMAN CROSSES AND STONE PAVEMENT PATTERN IN RED, BLACK AND BRONZE COLORS. AT CENTER OF FRONT IS OVAL CREST WITH CHI-RHO AND ALPHA AND OMEGA IN BRONZE COLORED STITCHING. CHASUBLE HAS MODERATE AMOUNT OF RUST STAINS. 2. STOLE - STOLE IS 9.5CM X 260CM IN SIZE AND IS NARROW AT MIDDLE AND TAPERS WIDER AT ENDS. FABRIC IS BEIGE AND SAME PATTERN AS CHASUBLE. STOLE HAS DEEP RED NYLON LINING AND COTTON LACE COLLAR ALONG MIDDLE. STOLE HAS GOLD COLORED NYLON TASSELS AT ENDS WITH RED, BLACK AND BRONZE BORDER. ALSO HAS THREE CROSSES SEWN TO IT IN SAME MATERIAL AS BORDER, ONE ON EACH END AND ONE IN MIDDLE.
