KNEE LENGTH. DRESS IS OFF-WHITE WITH BROWN AND RED RECTANGULAR PATTERNS THROUGHOUT. THERE IS A WIDE RUFFLE AT NECKLINE. ELBOW LENGTH SLEEVES ARE GATHERED AT CUFFS. SKIRT IS GATHERED AT WAISTLINE. THERE IS A PLASTIC ZIPPER IN BACK OF DRESS, WITH A STEEL PULL THAT IS PAINTED BEIGE (PAINT IS CHIPPED). BOTTOM OF DRESS HAS A LARGE RUFFLE THAT IS TRIMMED WITH 3 LINES OF BROWN STITCHING. JUST ABOVE RUFFLE IS AN ORANGE COLOURED STRIP OF LACE.

COWIE SANG IN ST PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH CHOIR AND MR. COWIE SANG AT HOME. ANNE BEGAN SINGING AT AGE EIGHT, AND BY AGE 14 SHE WAS CONDUCTING THE JUNIOR CHOIR OF ST. PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH IN SUTHERLAND. IN SASKATOON, ANNE STUDIED PIANO WITH LYLE GUSTIN AND VOICE WITH F.B. MORRISON. SHE ALSO STUDIED WITH DR. ERNEST VINCI OF TORONTO. MR. GUSTIN ENCOURAGED ANNE TO TAKE MUSIC COURSES AT ST. ANDREWS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN. ANNE EVENTUALLY EARNED AN A.R.C.T. FROM THE TORONTO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC, AS WELL AS AN A. MUS (ASSOCIATE IN MUSIC) AND L. MUS (LICENCIATE IN MUSIC), BOTH IN PIANO. IN 1939 ANNE MARRIED DON CAMPBELL AT WESTMINTSER UNITED CHURCH IN SASKATOON. AFTER THEY WERE MARRIED, THE CAMPBELLS MOVED TO CALGARY SO THAT DON COULD BEGIN A JOB AS A TRAVELING SALESMAN WITH MARSHALL WELLS HARDWARE. THEIR SONS MAC AND STEWART WERE BORN IN CALGARY, IN 1943 AND 1947 RESPECTIVELY. AFTER 1947 DON BECAME MANAGER OF THE HYDE AND SUNDAL HARDWARE STORE IN PICTURE BUTTE. DON EVENTUALLY BOUGHT THE STORE, CHANGED ITS NAME TO CAMPBELL HARDWARE AND WAS IN BUSINESS FOR 31½ YEARS. SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH ASKED ANNE TO FORM AN ALL GIRLS YOUTH CHOIR IN 1953, AND THE CAMPBELLS MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE. THE CHOIR ACCEPTED GIRLS FROM ALL OVER SOUTHERN ALBERTA. THE JUNIOR CHOIR SANG AT CHURCH SERVICES ONCE A MONTH, AND PERFORMED OPERETTAS IN THE SOUTHMINSTER CHURCH HALL. IN 1964 ANNE FORMED THE TEEN CLEFS, A 20 MEMBER CHAMBER CHOIR WITH GIRLS OF HIGH SCHOOL AGE. IN 1967 ANNE WAS INVITED TO TAKE THE GROUP TO MONTREAL FOR A PERFORMANCE AT EXPO 67. IN 1968 THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS WERE FORMED. THE CHOIR WENT TO THE UNITED KINGDOM THAT YEAR TO COMPETE AT THE TEESIDE INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND AND THE LLANGOLLEN INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL EISTEDDFOD IN WALES. UNTIL THE EARLY 1990S THE CHOIR CONTINUED TO TRAVEL THROUGHOUT CANADA AND OVERSEAS, AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPETE IN MANY MUSIC FESTIVALS. THE UNITED KINGDOM, DENMARK, BELGIUM, AUSTRIA AND JAPAN WERE AMONG THE COUNTRIES VISITED BY THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS. AS GIRLS FROM THE JUNIOR CHOIR AND ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS GREW OLDER, ANNE FORMED THE LINNET SINGERS SO THAT THOSE WHO WISHED COULD CONTINUE IN A CHOIR. THE LINNET SINGERS ALSO TRAVELED AND COMPETED EXTENSIVELY. ANNE CREATED THE MINI CHOIR AS A TRAINING GROUP FOR GIRLS SIX TO EIGHT YEARS OLD. SOME FORMER MEMBERS OF ANNE’S CHOIRS HAVE ESTABLISHED SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN MUSIC AS TEACHERS, CHOIR LEADERS AND OPERA SINGERS. ANNE CAMPBELL HAS RECEIVED MORE THAN A DOZEN AWARDS FOR HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHORAL MUSIC IN CANADA, INCLUDING THE ORDER OF CANADA IN 1977 AND HONOURARY DOCTOR OF LAWS DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE IN 1983. ANNE’S CHOIRS HAVE WON MORE THAN 20 AWARDS IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS. THE CHOIRS RECORDED 14 ALBUMS, AND WERE BROADCAST MANY TIMES BY THE CBC AND CKUA RADIO. THE GIRLS SANG MANY TYPES OF MUSIC: MADRIGALS, FOLK SONGS, SACRED MUSIC AND SHOW TUNES. THEY SANG AT VARIOUS TIMES IN ENGLISH, JAPANESE, GERMAN AND FRENCH. IN THE MID 1990S ANNE CAMPBELL RETIRED FROM ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CHOIRS. IN 1999 SHE MOVED TO COCHRANE, ALBERTA TO LIVE NEAR HER SON STEWART AND HIS FAMILY.

THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF MAYOR SHACKLEFORD WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM ARCHIVES CANADA ONLINE AND A LETHBRIDGE HERALD TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM MAY 31, 1992. A.W. SHACKLEFORD WAS BORN IN ESSEX, ENGLAND IN 1899 AND CAME TO CALGARY WITH HIS PARENTS IN 1909. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL HE TRAINED AS A DRAFTSMAN BUT WAS EMPLOYED BY THE FILM EXCHANGE AND FOX FILMS. IN 1921 HE WAS HIRED TO MANAGED THE KING'S THEATRE IN LETHBRIDGE AND BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH MARK ROGERS, A LETHBRIDGE BUSINESSMAN WHO OWNED THREE LOCAL MOVIE THEATRES. SHACKLEFORD ALSO BECAME PARTNER IN THE AMUSEMENT COMPANY THAT OPENED THE HENDERSON LAKE PAVILLION IN 1924. BY 1925 HE WAS PART-OWNER OF THE FORMER EMPRESS THEATRE ON 5TH AVENUE SOUTH, RENAMING IT THE ROXY. HE THEN TEAMED UP WITH THE FAMOUS PLAYERS COMPANY TO REMODEL THE FORMER PALACE THEATRE AND RENAME IT THE CAPITOL. SHACKLEFORD ALSO OPENED THE THEATRE IN THE FORMER COLLEGE MALL, BUILT THE 960-SEAT PARAMOUNT THEATRE ON 4TH AVENUE SOUTH, AND TOOK OVER OPERATION OF THE DIRVE-IN THEATRE AT THE SOUTH CITY LIMITS. SHACKLEFORD WAS HEAVILY INVOLVED IN CIVIC LIFE, ACTIVE IN GROUPS INCLUDING THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY, THE GYRO CLUB, UNITED WAY, LETHBRIDGE & DISTRICT EXHIBITION BOARD, BOARD OF TRADE, ST. AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH, AND THE ALBERTA THEATRE OPERATORS ASSOCIATION. HE AND HIS WIFE ADA HAD TWO SONS, ROBERT AND DOUGLAS. AFTER SEVERAL TERMS AS ALDERMAN STARTING IN 1939, SHACKLEFORD FIRST SERVED AS MAYOR FROM 1944 - 1947, AND FOR TWO MORE TERMS FROM 1952 - 1955 AND 1957 - 1961. HE WORKED FOR 68 YEARS IN THE MOVIE BUSINESS, RETIRING AT AGE 90. W.A. SHACKLEFORD DIED IN LETHBRIDGE ON MAY 30, 1992. HE WAS ALSO MADE AN HONOURARY LIFE MEMBER OF THE ALBERTA SUGAR BEET GROWERS ASSOCIATION FOR 31 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE ORGANIZATION, WHERE HE SERVED AS LABOUR ADVISOR AND SECRETARY/MANAGER. HARRY WAS ALSO AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LIONS CLUB IN LETHBRIDGE. DURING WWII HARRY WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE LION INFANTRY TEAM IN THE VICTORY LOAN CAMPAIGN. AN ARTICLE FROM JULY 6, 1943 RECOUNTS THAT HARRY WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AT SELLING WAR BONDS: “MR BOYSE … TOOK OUT A ‘STAMP-O-GRAM’ CARD AND WITH 18 CALLS SOLD $103 WORTH OF WAR SAVINGS STAMPS. A ‘DEPTH CHARGE’ COSTS $90 AND MR. BOYSE FEELS THAT HE WILL PERSONALLY BE ABLE TO SELL FOUR ‘DEPTH CHARGES’ FOR THE CORVETTE LETHBRIDGE.” ANOTHER ARTICLE FROM JUNE 18, 1943 EXPLAINS THAT HARRY HAD JUST COMPLETED A SUCCESSFUL TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE LIONS CLUB. THE ARTICLE CONTINUES SAYING: “’LIONS THROUGHOUT CANADA POINT WITH PRIDE TO THE $117,000 ALREADY SENT OVERSEAS FOR THIS CAUSE. THIS MONEY IS ENTRUSTED TO THE WAIFS AND STRAYS SOCIETY, WHICH ADMINISTERS HOMES FOR LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN EVACTUATED FROM TARGET AREAS, OR WHOSE PARENTS HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED IN THE ‘BLITZ’’, [MR. BOYSE] SAID.” IRENE BOYSE (NEE JOHNSON) WAS BORN IN BANTRY, ND ON AUGUST 20, 1908 AND MOVED TO CANADA IN 1909. SHE WAS RAISED AND EDUCATED IN THE FOREMOST, AB AREA. WORN BY DONOR WHO ATTENDED CAMP INUSPI AT THE AGE OF 13. AFTER THAT YEAR DONOR BECAME INVOLVED WITH ACTIVITIES RUN BY THE CHURCH OF LATTER DAY SAINTS (CAMPS, BEEHIVE GIRLS, SORORITIES - SEE OTHER DONATIONS). CAMP INUSPI WAS SITUATED IN WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK AND WAS RUN BY THE LETHBRIDGE YMCA. IN 1932, THE COMISSIONER FOR DOMINION PARKS APPROACHED THE LETHBRIDGE YMCA WITH THE IDEA OF ESTABLISHING A SUMMER YOUTH CAMP FOR BOYS IN WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK FOR THE PURPOSES OF OUTDOOR FITNESS AND RECREATION. A SITE WAS CHOSEN IN 1933 AND THE FIRST CAMP, IN TENTS, WAS HELD IN 1934. THE FIRST PERMANENT BUILDING WAS BUILT IN 1935. THE FIRST GIRL'S CAMP BEGAN IN 1939 AND CONTINUED EACH AUGUST UNTIL THE FIRST CO-ED CAMP IN THE SUMMER OF 1968. IN THE FALL OF THAT YEAR PARKS CANADA TERMINATED THE LAND LEASE CAMP INUSPI HAD HELD SINCE 1934 AND THE CAMP FOUNDERED.

DONOR JACK LEE WAS BORN IN VANCOUVER IN 1924. HE RELOCATED WITH HIS PARENTS TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1928. IN THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED LEE’S DISCHARGE FROM OVERSEAS SERVICE DURING WORLD WAR TWO, HE DECIDED AT AGE 23/24 TO JOIN THE LETHBRIDGE YMCA BECAUSE, ACCORDING TO LEE IN 2010, “I NEEDED EXERCISE, I HAD NO HOBBY, NO OUTLET”. “IT WAS THE ONLY OUTLET THAT HAD PHYSICAL ACTIVITY” HE SAID, ADDING THAT THE Y’S WEIGHT TRAINING PROGRAM WAS WHAT ORIGINALLY ATTRACTED HIM TO BECOMING INVOLVED AT THE ‘Y’. LEE MAINTAINED HIS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ‘Y’ “OFF AND ON FOR TWENTY YEARS”, PARTICIPATING IN CALISTHENICS, SWIMMING, BASKETBALL AND SCUBA DIVING LESSONS. INCREASING DEMANDS OF HIS TIME MADE BY THE LOCAL MILITIA ULTIMATELY LED TO HIS WITHDRAWAL FROM THE ‘Y’. THE JACKET, ACCORDING TO LEE, WAS NOT “OFFICIAL WEAR FOR THE SENIOR LEADER” NOR WAS THE JACKET’S CREST OFFICIAL. “AFTER I BECAME A GRADUATE LEADER, I WAS PROUD AND DECIDED TO GET A JACKET MADE.” ONCE IN POSSESSION OF THE JACKET, HOWEVER, HE FELT FOOLISH, SAYING, “I DIDN’T WEAR IT BECAUSE THE REST OF THE GROUP WOULD THINK I WAS A SHOW OFF – AND THAT’S WHY IT IS STILL BRAND NEW”. LEE ONLY WORE THE JACKET ONCE TO A NON-YMCA SOCIAL GATHERING. HE RECALLS THAT OF ALL THE SENIOR LEADERS, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE TO ACHIEVE GRADUATE LEADER STATUS STATING, HOWEVER, THAT FORMER MEMBERS LIKE BERT STRATTON HAD ACHIEVED THE TITLE PRECIOUS. THERE WAS NO PRIVILEGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TITLE “JUST THE PERSONAL SATISFACTION THAT I DID IT”. TO BE CONSIDERED ELIGIBLE TO BECOME A GRADUATE LEADER, LEE WAS REQUIRED TO SERVE AS A SENIOR LEADER FOR FOUR. THEREAFTER, HE QUALIFIED PER SET CRITERIA IN BASKETBALL – HIS SPORT OF CHOICE AND ONE OF MANY ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT THE ‘Y’. THE CRITERIA INCLUDED: PLAY IN AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE, REFEREE IN AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE, COACH A TEAM IN AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE, AND DEVELOP AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE. LEE STATED THAT HE COACHED A ‘Y’ WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUE, ORGANIZED A JUNIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE INCLUDING TEAMS FROM THE ‘Y’ AND LOCAL CHURCHES AND PLAYED ON A SENIOR ‘Y’ MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM. THE BLAZER JACKET, HE RECALLED, WAS BOUGHT LOCALLY AT STAN’S MEN’S WEAR. THE DONATED, OFFICIAL GRADUATE LEADER CREST WAS WORN DAY-TO-DAY ON ATHLETIC SHIRTS BY MEANS OF SNAPS ON CREST’S REVERSE. WORN BY JAMES STEWART, MEMBER OF THE CALEDONIAN PIPE BAND. AS A RESULT OF RESEARCH DONE IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SCOTTISH-THEMED EXHIBIT IN 2009, THE GALT CONDUCTED NEW RESEARCH INTO THE EXISTENCE AND ACTIVITIES OF THE CALEDONIAN PIPE BAND. THIS UNIFORM WAS WORN BY CALEDONIAN PIPE BAND MEMBER JAMES STEWART WHO LEFT SCOTLAND AND CAME TO CANADA WITH HIS WIFE GEORGINA AND FAMILY IN 1914. THE FAMILY SETTLED IN LETHBRIDGE IN APRIL 1914, WHERE THEY WOULD REMAIN FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. STEWART WAS BORN IN EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND ON 23 JANUARY 1887. HE JOINED LETHBRIDGE'S 61ST OVERSEAS ARTILLERY BATTERY IN 1916 AND WAS PREVIOUSLY EMPLOYED IN LETHBRIDGE AS A MINER. FORMED IN APPROXIMATELY 1909, THE BAND WAS CLOSELY LINKED WITH LETHBRIDGE’S CALEDONIAN SOCIAL CLUB. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT IN LOCAL HALLS OR AT SOMBER FUNERARY EVENTS, THE BAND TRAVELED THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN ALBERTA AND MONTANA TO PARTICIPATE IN OTHER COMMUNITIES’ COMPETITIONS AND ROBBIE BURNS’ EVENTS. THE BAND WAS EXTREMELY ACTIVE IN THE 20S, HOWEVER, INTEREST WANED BY THE DECADE’S END AND THE BAND IS SUSPECTED TO HAVE DISBANDED BY 1933. BASED ON THE UNIFORM’S SHOULDER DETAILS AND AVAILABLE PHOTOGRAPHS IN ARCHIVES, IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS UNIFORM DATES TO THE 1920S. ADDITIONALLY, THE UNIFORM SET WAS ON REGULAR DISPLAY THROUGHOUT IN 2009 AND WAS SCHEDULED FOR EXHIBIT IN 2010. DAVE MERESKI RE-BUILT THE MISSING SECTION WITH SPECIALTY LASER EQUIPMENT, RETURNING THE JEWEL TO ITS ORIGINAL MOUNT.

SOME PEOPLE, WITH THE SHOOTING SPORTS, IT’S AN ACTIVITY WHICH YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE INVOLVED OR GO TO COMPETITIONS IF YOU DON’T WISH TO. SO IT’S A LIFELONG TYPE OF ACTIVITY. IT’S THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS, SO THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT REALLY APPEAL TO ME ABOUT IT. SO, THE COMPETITIONS, IF THEY WISH TO THAT FINE, IF THEY DON’T, THEN I TEACH THEM THE FUNDAMENTALS, SO THAT THEY CAN BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN DOING IT, THEN I’M HAPPY WITH THAT. WE HAVE SOME BASIC TYPE OF INSTRUCTION THAT WE DO. WE HAVE A CHECKLIST THAT WE FOLLOW, THAT THEY HAVE THE RIGHT ABILITIES AND SKILLS TO ENGAGE SAFELY. BUT AFTER THAT THERE IS A COURSE CALLED THE BLACK BADGE COURSE, AND THIS IS SPECIFICALLY FOR INTERNATIONAL PRACTICAL SHOOTING CONFEDERATION. SO THE BLACK BADGE COURSE IS ONE SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT SPORT. IT FOCUSES ON THE RULES OF THAT SPORT. IT’S A REQUIREMENT TO COMPLETE THAT COURSE AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A MATCH AFTER THAT COURSE IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN MATCHES. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BLACK BADGE IN ORDER TO COMPETE IN THEIR MATCHES. [THROUGH COACHING, I’VE HAD] A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK WITH A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY MUCH ENTHUSED ABOUT DOING WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THEIR PARENTS. I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO SHOOTING SPORTS, I HAD A FRIEND WHO TOLD ME ABOUT IT AND I SAID ‘OH MAN, THAT SOUNDS LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF MACHO BULLSHIT, I DON’T THINK I’M INTERESTED, BUT I SAID O.K., I’LL COME OUT AND TRY IT. IT’S JUST VERY ENJOYABLE. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY IT’S SO ENJOYABLE, BUT IT IS. THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE, IN TERMS OF RECOIL, THE SMOKE, AND THE NOISE, IT’S JUST A LOT OF FUN TO DO. [AS A VOLUNTEER COACH] I THINK THAT VOLUNTEERING IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. IT’S EXTREMELY GRATIFYING. I MEAN, YOU’RE MOTIVATION ISN’T TO DO IT BECAUSE YOU’RE GETTING PAID. NO QUESTION. FOR ME, I’M COACHING, I TELL THEM THE RIGHT THINGS TO DO, AND IF THEY DO IT, THEN THAT’S O.K. AND IF THEY DO IT, THERE REALLY ISN’T MUCH PRESSURE, BUT THE PRESSURE CERTAINLY IS THERE. I MEAN ANY COMPETITION HAS PRESSURE INVOLVED WITH IT. THAT’S WHAT UPS THE ANTE ON IT, THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT IMPORTANT.” RESPONDING TO A QUESTION ABOUT WHAT HAS KEPT HIM INVOLVED FOR SO MANY YEARS, FRIESEN ANSWERED, “I ENJOY IT STILL, IT’S SOMETHING I CAN DO AND CAN ADD VALUE. IT’S STILL SOMETHING THAT IS AN EXCITING THING TO BE INVOLVED IN, SO YEAH. I’VE HAD SOME EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD DAYS WHERE I DID EXTREMELY WELL, AND ONE OF THOSE I WON THIS BIG HONKING ROBERT BATEMAN PRINT KIND OF A THING BECAUSE I WON MY CATEGORY AND THAT’S STILL SOMETHING THAT I HAVE AS A MEMENTO. AND I STILL HAVE SOME TARGETS THAT I FIRED THAT WERE EXTREMELY GOOD, YOU KNOW THEY’RE STICKING UP IN MY GARAGE AND I GIVE THOSE A LOOK ONCE IN AWHILE. AS AN ATHLETE, I GUESS, THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. AS A COACH, SOME GRATIFICATION WHEN YOU HAVE, SOME GENTLEMAN I JUST MENTIONED THAT IS A SPONSORED SHOOTER NOW, WELL THAT’S REALLY GRATIFYING. WE’VE HAD LOTS OF KIDS IN 4-H GROUPS, WELL THEY WEREN’T THERE FOR ANY COMPETITIVE PURPOSES, THEY WERE THERE TO LEARN THE SAFETY ASPECTS. AND SO NOW THEY COME BACK AND THEY ARE ADULTS NOW, AND THEY ARE SAYING “HOW CAN I, DO YOU NEED ME TO HELP, DO YOU NEED SOME VOLUNTEERS?” I MEAN THAT’S GREAT, THAT’S KEEPING IT MOVING KIND OF THING. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WERE MY MENTORS, MY COACHES, PEOPLE WHO HELPED ME WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. THOSE FOLKS ARE GOING ON TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE, SO IT’S A GREAT CYCLE.” RECALLING SOME OF THE CHALLENGES TO BEING A COACH AND SHOOTER, FRIESEN SAID, “SHOOTING SPORTS ARE VERY UNUSUAL IN THAT THE BASICS ARE VERY EASY TO MASTER, THEN ALL IT IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SHUT UP, STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND JUST DO IT. IF YOU OVER THINK IT, THAT’S WHEN THINGS GO AWRY. SO, IF YOU KIND OF HAVE A PLAN, YOU KNOW THE BASICS, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO, AND THEN AFTER THAT, AT THE POINT WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY ENGAGED IN IT, WHEN THE BUZZER BLOWS AND YOU BEGIN TO ENGAGE IN THOSE TARGETS, YOU DON’T THINK ABOUT IT. YOU HAD THE PLAN BEFORE, YOU KEEP YOUR MIND QUIET AND DO WHAT YOU’VE GOT TO DO AND THAT KIND OF THING, AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL. WHERE IT’S CHALLENGING IS WHEN YOU START TALKING TO YOURSELF TOO MUCH WHEN YOU’RE SHOOTING, THEN THE WHEELS FALL OFF IN A HURRY. [S]HOOTING IS THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS. I MEAN I CUT MY FINGER ONCE, MINOR THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT SHOOTING IS THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS. WHEN ASKED TO DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF SHOOTING, FRIESEN RECALLED, “HERE’S ONE OF THE STAGES FROM A 3 GUN MATCH THAT WE HAD THAT I RECALL. BASICALLY YOU START IT OFF IN A LITTLE CARD WE HAD IT ON AN INCLINE, THEN ON THE BUZZER, THEY HAVE CHECKED YOU ALL OVER AND MADE SURE YOU ARE READY TO GO, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE COURSE OF FIRE IS. SO THERE IS A RANGE OFFICER THAT IS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. AND THAT PERSON WOULD SAY ‘DO YOU KNOW THE COURSE OF FIRE AND IF YOU DO, LOAD AND MAKE READY’ SO YOU LOAD AND MAKE READY, AND YOU HAVE YOUR SHOTGUN ON THIS LITTLE CART THAT YOU ARE IN AND YOU HAVE YOUR PISTOL LOADED IN YOUR HOLSTER AND YOU HAVE YOUR RIFLE STAGE FURTHER DOWN RANGE. SO THEN IT WOULD BE ON THE BUZZER YOU HIT THIS RELEASE AND THE CART STARTS ROLLING DOWN THE RAMP AND AS AS IT DOES, THERE IS THESE CLAY PIGEONS THAT ARE ALL THE WAY DOWN THE SIDES AND YOU HAVE TO SHOOT AT THE CLAY PIGEONS ON EITHER SIDE AND GET OUT , EXIT THE CART, AND THEN THERE ARE SOME OTHER PIECES OF STEEL THAT YOU HAVE TO SHOOT WITH YOUR SHOTGUN AND THEN THE LAST ONE THAT YOU SHOOT TRIGGERS A BIRD THROWER, A CLAY PIGEON THROWER, AND IT FLINGS A BIRD UP IN THE AIR, AND YOU HAVE TO HIT THAT WHEN ITS GOING, AND THEN YOU HAVE TO UNLOAD AND SHOW THAT YOUR FIREARM IS CLEAR. THEN YOU MOVE TO THE NEXT STAGE WHERE YOU GRAB YOUR PISTOL THERE IS A BUNCH OF PAPER TARGETS, IT’S CALLED THE COOPER TUNNEL, A TUNNEL THAT YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH SO YOU HAVE TO CROUCH DOWN OR GO ON YOUR KNEES AND YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH LITTLE PORTS THAT YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH, AND SHOOT THROUGH THERE, AND THIS SIDE YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH. SO YOU GO THROUGH THIS WHOLE PROCESS THAT WAY, THEN WHEN YOU EXIT THERE ARE STILL A COUPLE TARGETS STILL FOR PISTOL AT THE END. THEN YOU HAVE TO UNLOAD, LOCK THE ACTION OF YOUR PISTOL, SET YOUR PISTOL DOWN AND A RANGE OFFICER SEES THAT YOU ARE ALL CLEAR AND THEN YOU GO TO YOUR RIFLE THAT WAS STAGED THERE. AND THEN THERE ARE SOME TARGETS AND THOSE TARGETS, ACTUALLY WE HAD THEM ON A BIANCHE MOVER, THAT IS ACTUALLY A PLATFORM THAT IS ON A CHAIN DRIVE THAT MOVES THE TARGETS ACROSS. AS ITS MOVING YOU HAVE TO GO AND FIRE AT THEM WITH YOUR RIFLE TO HIT THESE PIECES OF PAPER AS THEY ARE MOVING ACROSS IN FRONT OF YOU. THAT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF PHYSICAL STUFF, BUT YOU ARE JUST PUFFING AT THE END. AND IF YOU DO IT WELL, IT TAKES 35 SECONDS, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IT’S ALL MEASURED IN THE HITS AND THE TIME. THOSE ARE THE TWO THINGS. SOME PEOPLE, LIKE RYAN I WAS TALKING ABOUT WHO IS ON THIS NATIONAL TEAM, MAN HE’S LIKE HALF MY TIME, ALL THE TIME. IF I CAN EVEN DOUBLE HIS TIME, I’M PLEASED WITH THAT. SO THE ONLY THING I GET LUCKY WITH IS IF MY ACCURACY IS BETTER THAN HIS. BUT HE IS ACCURATE AND HE IS FAST AND THAT’S DIFFICULT. ANYWAY, THAT’S WHAT A 3-GUN STAGE IS LIKE. FUN STUFF. [G]OING OUT ON NORMAL PRACTICE IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT, LIKE FOR THE SHOTGUN SHOOTERS, THEY’LL JUST HAVE A BIRD THROWER AND THEY WILL JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE BIRD, PRESSING THE TRIGGER AND FOLLOWING THE BIRD. FOR THE RIFLE SHOOTERS, TYPICALLY, THEY JUST WANT TO SHOOT THE TIGHTEST GROUP POSSIBLE. THAT MEANS THAT BASICALLY WHEN YOU FIRE, THE PROJECTILES END UP IN A SMALL AREA ALTOGETHER, OR IF PREFERRED, TOUCHING. THE PEOPLE WHO DO IT, THEY’LL SHOOT TARGETS AT 100,200 AND 300 YARDS. SO NOW FOR ME, I’M NOT A BIG CENTRE FIRE RIFLE SHOOTER, BUT I’M NOT BAD AT IT, WITH GOOD EQUIPMENT, I CAN SHOOT MAYBE A 5-INCH GROUP AT MAYBE 100 YARDS. SO 5 SHOTS AT 300 YARDS ARE ALL WITHIN THAT 5-INCH DIAMETER. THE PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY GOOD CAN SHOOT 5 SHOTS AT 300 YARDS AND CAN PUT THEM IN A MUCH TIGHTER AREA, SO THEY WOULD OBVIOUSLY WIN THAT COMPETITION OVER ME. IT’S VERY CONTROLLED, VERY METHODICAL. THEY WILL BE MONITORING THEIR BREATHING, THEY HAVE A SYSTEM FOR IT, THEY WILL DO LIKE “NOW I’LL TAKE 7 BREATHS AND AS I STOP, PRESS THE TRIGGER AND THEN GET PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ONE”. SOME OF THEM VERY MUCH HAVE A SYSTEM TOO THAT IS VERY METHODICAL AND OTHERS, HANDGUN SHOOTING—WHICH IS WHAT I DO MOSTLY, IT’S MOSTLY DRILLS- DRILLS IN TERMS OF DRAW, SHOOT, RELOAD. IT’S ALL IN TERMS OF FUNCTIONALITY AND RELOADING, AND BEING SAFE WITH THE DRAW AND GETTING THE HIT AS QUICK AS YOU CAN. THE PEOPLE THAT CAN DO IT DRAW AND HIT THE TARGET IN UNDER A SECOND. I’M PROBABLY 1.3 SECONDS, COMMONLY.
