NAVY BLUE WOOL TROUSERS. THERE IS AN ANGLED WELT POCKET ON EACH SIDE. JUST BELOW EACH OF THESE POCKETS IS A VERTICAL LINE OF RED PIPING. THERE ARE ALSO TWO WELT POCKETS ON BACK OF PANTS. FRONT OPENING CLOSES WITH FOUR NAVY BLUE BUTTONS. THERE IS A SMALL FOB OR WATCH POCKET ON FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF PANTS. A WHITE TAG IS STAPLED TO LEFT FRONT; TAG READS "NEEDLECRAFT MILLS LTD. NAME G. MASSON NO. 5 ADDRESS LETHBRIDGE ALTA. BREAST 39 WAIST SLEEVE 19 LENGTH 29 WAIST 36 SEAT INS. LEG 30". WAISTBAND AND POCKETS ARE LINED WITH AN OFF-WHITE COTTON AND DENIM. THERE ARE 6 OFF-WHITE BUTTONS AROUND INSIDE OF WAISTBAND.

THERE ARE TWO GROMMETS AT TOP OF APRON (NECK STRING IS MISSING), AND TWO GROMMETS AT SIDES OF APRON. ONE SIDE HAS A WHITE SHOELACE TIED TO IT, THE OTHER HAS A BLACK SHOELACE TIED TO IT. ON FRONT OF APRON READS "MURRAY BRANTFORD" IN BLACK. IN THE CENTER OF THE TWO WORDS IS A RED "M" AND BELOW THIS IS A GREY RECTANGLE, WITH TWO WHITE STRIPS IN THE CENTER. BOTTOM SEAM HAS BEEN REPAIRED A NUMBER OF TIMES.

BLACK RUBBER RAIN CAPE. HAS A TURNED DOWN COLLAR WHICH IS TRIMMED WITH RED PIPING. FRONT CLOSES WITH FOUR STEEL LATCHES, THAT ARE PAINTED BLACK. INSIDE OF CAPE IS LINED WITH A STIFF YELLOWISH MATERIAL. INSIDE EACH SIDE OF CAPE IS A RUBBER STRAP THAT IS HELD IN PLACE WITH A BLACK METAL SNAP. STAMPED INSIDE RIGHT OF CAPE IS "C.P.O. 1932". ABOVE THE STAMP THE MATERIAL IS WORN AND DISCOLOURED. WRITTEN INSIDE BACK OF NECK IS "M4 GM MAY 1932 M".

CAPE WAS USED BY CANADIAN POSTAL WORKERS TO HANG OVER SHOULDER, THEREBY COVERING MAILBAGS. CAPE BELONGED TO DONOR'S FATHER, GEORGE MASSON, WHO WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SIX POSTAL WORKERS IN LETHBRIDGE. GEORGE CAME TO CANADA FROM SCOTLAND IN 1910 (HIS PARENTS HAD SETTLED IN LETHBRIDGE SHORTLY BEFORE). HE WORKED FOR THE C.P.R. AND IN CONSTRUCTION, AND WHEN POSTAL JOB CAME UP HE GOT IT. GEORGE WORKED FOR HIGINBOTHAM BEGINNING IN 1913 AND DELIVERED MAIL UNTIL THE OUTBREAK OF WWI. GEORGE WAS AMONG THE FOUR POSTMEN WHO WENT OVERSEAS (OTHER THREE WERE HIS BROTHER ALEC, BILLY BRENNAN, AND ANOTHER UNKNOWN). GEORGE AND HIS BROTHER ALEC SERVED WITH THE 39TH FIELD BATTERY, RCA. GEORGE SERVED WITH THE MILITIA BETWEEN THE WARS, AND WENT BACK TO POST OFFICE. IN WWII HE JOINED UP WITH THE 20TH ANTI-TANK BATTERY, BUT HAD TO GIVE IT UP DUE TO AGE; COULDN'T GO OVERSEAS SO HE WENT INTO ADMINISTRATION AND INSTRUCTION. AFTER THE WAR HE WENT BACK TO THE POST OFFICE UNTIL 1952, WHEN HE WAS ADVISED BY HIS DOCTORS TO TAKE AN EARLY RETIREMENT (AT AGE 62). ACCORDING TO DONOR, THE POSTAL SERVICE AND THE MILITARY WERE GEORGE'S TWO GREAT LOVES IN HIS LIFE. DONOR WAS BORN AND RAISED IN LETHBRIDGE; WENT TO FLEETWOOD-BAWDEN SCHOOL BEGINNING IN 1934. HAS LIVED AND WORKED IN CITY UNTIL RECENT MOVE TO COALDALE. DONOR ALSO HAS A LOT OF FAMILY THAT LIVE IN LETHBRIDGE.

SHE MOVED WITH HER FAMILY TO CANADA, WHERE THEY SETTLED IN EDMONTON. SHE REMAINED IN EDMONTON, UNTIL HER MARRIAGE TO DAVE RODIN. THE COUPLE MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1929 WHERE DAVE OPERATED THE BUY-RITE GROCERY STORE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. ETHEL PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 82 ON JULY 9, 1990. DAVE RODIN WAS BORN IN RUSSIA AND MOVED TO EDMONTON IN THE 1920S. HE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 74 ON SEPTEMBER 3, 1977. AFTER 47 SUCCESSFUL YEARS OF BUSINESS IN THE CITY, MR. RODIN HAS RETIRED AT 73 … BY BUYING CAREFULLY AND SHOPPING AROUND MR. RODIN WAS ABLE TO SELL FRUIT AND VEGETABLES CHEAPER THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE CITY … IN 1939 HE JOINED FORCES WITH ELMER GOODMAN, A LETHBRIDGE BUSINESSMAN, IN A PARTNERSHIP THAT WAS TO LAST 37 YEARS. … MR. HERE, WAS IN THE CITY AT THE TIME AND INVITED HIS BROTHER TO COME OUT. ‘GEORDIE’ FIRST WORKED IN THE FREIGHT SHEDS FOR A WHILE AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR JOINED THE POST OFFICE.” DETAILS OF GEORGE’S CAREER APPEARED IN AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED ON JULY 28, 1965: “HE BEGAN HIS 41-YEAR CAREER AS A MAILMAN APRIL 1, 1911. AT THAT TIME HE WAS PAID 75 CENTS A DAY PLUS $15 A MONTH ‘WESTERN ALLOWANCE’ GRANTED TO POSTMEN WEST OF THE GREAT LEAKS.” IN THE JANUARY 8, 1952 ARTICLE, THE ORIGINAL SIX POSTAL CARRIERS ARE NAMED: GEORGE MASSON, HIS BROTHER ALEX MASSON, ALEX LOTHIAN, WILLIAM GILSON, WILLIAM “BILLY” BRENNAN, AND E.C. COOPER. THIS ARTICLE ALSO INDICATES THAT THE FOUR POSTMEN WHO SERVED OVERSEAS IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR WERE GEORGE, HIS BROTHER ALEX, BILLY BRENNAN, AND WILLIAM GILSON. ACCORDING TO THIS ARTICLE, BOTH BRENNAN AND GILSON WERE KILLED OVERSEAS. DETAILS OF GEORGE’S WORK AS A POSTMAN ARE FOUND IN THE JANUARY 1952 ARTICLE: “FROM SIX LETTER CARRIERS AND 12 ‘INSIDE’ MEN IN 1911, THE POST OFFICE STAFF HERE HAS GROWN TO 20 CARRIERS AND 35 OTHER EMPLOYEES. THE CITY’S POPULATION HAS NEARLY TREBLED FROM THE 8,000-ODD WHO LIVED HERE WHEN ‘GEORDIE’ MASSON, AS HE IS KNOWN TO HIS NUMEROUS FRIENDS, BEGAN DELIVERING MAIL. … OFTEN HE HAD TO CARRY UP TO 100 POUNDS OF MAIL TO BE DELIVERED IN A SINGLE DAY. HE USED TO START FOR NORTH LETHBRIDGE, OR THE NORTH WARD AS IT WAS THEN KNOWN, WITH PACKAGES STRAPPED TO HIS BACK AND MORE PARCELS ON HIS CHEST.” AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE HERALD ON JULY 3, 1962 PROVIDES MORE DETAILS ABOUT HIS WORK: “WHEN THE SERVICE BEGAN, STREETS WERE NAMED AND HOUSES HAD NO NUMBERS. A LETTER CARRIER HAD TO ASK HIS WAY THROUGH UNTIL HE KNEW BY HEART WHERE HIS ‘CLIENTS’ WERE RESIDING. IT TOOK MR. MASSON 11 HOURS, FROM 8 A.M. TO 7 P.M. TO DELIVER HIS FIRST BAG OF MAIL. … MR. MASSON’S ROUTE WAS NOT SMALL BY ANY MEANS. HE COVERED THE NORTH SIDE FROM 1ST AVE TO 7TH AVE N BETWEEN 12TH AND 20TH ST. AND THE SOUTH SIDE BETWEEN 1ST AVE. AND 4TH AVE. IN THE 1300 BLOCK. IN THE AFTERNOON MR. MASSON DELIVERED MAIL TO STORES ON 13TH ST. N.” IN NOVEMBER 1914 GEORGE WAS MARRIED TO LILLIAN “LILY” KEITH MACKIE. LILY PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 91 ON NOVEMBER 15, 1985. HE WAS BORN IN QUEBEC’S EASTERN TOWNSHIPS AND CAME WEST IN 1902, FIRST TO MEDICINE HAT, AB THEN TO LETHBRIDGE WHERE HIS COUSIN WAS PRACTICING LAW. ACCORDING TO HIS OBITUARY, “IN 1904 HE BEGAN WRITING INSURANCE FOR THE LAW FIRM OF CONYBEARE AND IVES.” WILLIAM CARLOS “W.C.” IVES WAS BORN IN 1873 IN COMPTON, QC, THE SON OF GEORGE CANNING AND SARAH ABBEY/ABBIE IVES (NEE THOMAS). IN 1881 THE FAMILY MOVED WEST TO PINCHER CREEK WHERE HIS FATHER ESTABLISHED A RANCH. W.C. ATTENDED SCHOOL IN PINCHER CREEK, COATICOOK, QC, AND MCGILL UNIVERSITY. HE STUDIED LAW FROM 1896 TO 1899 AT MCGILL AND WAS ADMITTED TO THE BAR IN THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC. HE WAS LATER ADMITTED TO THE BAR OF THE NORTH WEST TERRITORIES IN 1901 AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE TO ESTABLISH A PRACTICE. HE PRACTICED LAW IN LETHBRIDGE FOR 13 YEARS AND IN 1914 WAS APPOINTED TO THE SUPREME COURT OF ALBERTA AS A TRIAL JUDGE. IN SEPTEMBER 1942 HE WAS MADE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE TRIAL DIVISION. BY THE TIME HE RETIRED, W.C. HAD SERVED AS A JUDGE FOR 30 YEARS. W.C. WAS MARRIED IN 1906 TO MILLICENT MAY TOULL. MILLICENT WAS BORN IN INGERSOLL, ON ON JULY 9, 1879 AND PASSED AWAY ON JULY 10, 1958. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM AND JOSEPHINE TOULL (NEE ELLIOTT). W.C. PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 77 ON JULY 11, 1950. GEORGE CANNING IVES WAS BORN NEAR SHERBROOKE, QC AND MOVED WEST AS AN EARLY RECRUIT OF THE RNWMP IN 1879. HE LEFT THE POLICE TO TAKE UP A RANCH NEAR PRINCE CREEK, AND HE RANCHED UNTIL HE WAS APPOINTED CUSTOMS OFFICER AT MACLEOD IN 1890. ACCORDING TO HIS OBITUARY “THE DECEASED WAS A WELL KNOWN FIGURE AMONG STOCKMEN OF THE SOUTH FOR MANY YEARS. HE WAS ONE OF THE VERY EARLIEST PIONEERS OF THIS COUNTRY AND NEVER TIRED OF RECALLING THE ‘GOD OLD DAYS’ IN THE WEST, WHEN BUFFALO WERE NOT AN UNCOMMON SIGHT.” HE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 74 IN APRIL 1922. SARAH ABBEY/ABBIE IVES (NEE THOMAS) WAS BORN IN COMPTON, QC IN MARCH 1851 AND WAS MARRIED TO GEORGE IVES IN COMPTON, QC. THE COUPLE MOVED WEST IN 1880 TO SETTLE IN PINCHER CREEK, AB. ACCORDING TO HER OBITUARY “THERE WERE VERY FEW WHITE WOMEN IN THE COUNTRY IN THESE EARLY DAYS, SO THAT MRS. IVES WAS REALLY AND TRULY A PIONEER IN THE FULLEST SENSE OF THE TERM. IN THESE EARLY DAYS SHE WAS VERY HIGHLY ESTEEMED, AS THE DOOR OF HER HOSPITABLE HOME WAS ALWAYS OPEN, AND A HEARTY WELCOME EXTENDED TO NEIGHBOR OR STRANGER.” SARAH PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 79 ON NOVEMBER 17, 1929. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION COMES FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DONOR, CHERYL ATKINSON, CONDUCTED BY KEVIN MACLEAN IN MAY 2016. THIS VEST WAS CREATED AS PART OF AN ART GARMENT CHALLENGE PUT FORWARD BY THE TEXTILE SURFACE DESIGN GUILD. CHERYL WAS BOTH A PARTICIPANT AND AN ORGANIZER OF THIS ART CHALLENGE. CHERYL INDICATED THAT “PART OF THE CHALLENGE WAS TO WORK WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WHO, MAYBE YOU HADN’T SPENT TIME TRYING TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH.” IN JANUARY 2014 THE GUILD GOT TOGETHER TO DETERMINE THE WORKING GROUPS AND THE THEMES THAT WOULD BE WORKED ON, BASED ON “WHAT THEIR INTERESTS WERE IN LIFE. SO, SOME PEOPLE CHOSE GARDENING, ANOTHER GROUP DID ART, LIKE PURE ART, AND OUR GROUP CHOSE THE ENVIRONMENT. AND, AT THE TIME, THE ENVIRONMENT IN LETHBRIDGE WAS UNDER THREAT, IN QUESTION BECAUSE THERE WAS A COMPANY THAT WAS PLANNING TO DO DIRECTIONAL DRILLING, FRACKING, IN WEST LETHBRIDGE, AND ONE OF THE MEMBERS WHO JOINED OUR GROUP WAS PARTICULARLY CONCERNED ABOUT IT, SO WE THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR OUR ART GARMENT.” PART OF THE REASON THE GUILD WANTED TO DO A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT LIKE THIS IS BECAUSE THE GROUP HAD GROWN CONSIDERABLY IN SIZE: “OUR GROUP HAS EXPANDED A LOT. IN THE LAST NUMBER OF YEARS WE WENT FROM A GROUP OF ABOUT FIFTEEN PEOPLE TO A GROUP OF ABOUT FORTY PEOPLE, SO IT’S HARD TO GET TO KNOW FORTY PEOPLE INTIMATELY, SO WE WERE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER, LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR INTERESTS. AND SO, WE JUST, LIKE, HAD A CONVERSATION AND PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT THINGS THEY WERE INTERESTED IN, AND THEN WE STARTED, I THINK WE PASSED AROUND A LIST OF, JUST LIKE A SHEET THAT PEOPLE WOULD WRITE DOWN KIND OF TOPICS OF THEIR INTEREST, AND THEN WE JUST STARTED MATCHING THEM UP, AND THEN WE PUT, WE DIDN’T WANT TO HAVE LIKE TEN PEOPLE ON ONE PROJECT AND ONE ON ANOTHER, SO WE TRIED TO SORT OF SPLIT THEM UP IF PEOPLE PUT DOWN MORE THAN ONE AREA OF INTEREST. SO, ENVIRONMENT JUST TURNED OUT TO BE FRANCES [SCHULTZ], BEV [HALL] AND I SO.” CHERYL INDICATED THAT THE ENVIRONMENT WAS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO GROUP MEMBER BEV HALL: “I THINK THAT THE ISSUE ABOUT THE FRACKING CAME UP AS WE DISCUSSED, LIKE, WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO ABOUT THE VEST … BEV FOR INSTANCE, LOVES TO HIKE IN THE MOUNTAINS AND THAT SHE FEELS CONNECTED TO THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA. AND THEN, WE HAD A VERY TIGHT TIME PRESSURE, WE HAD SIX WEEKS TO FINISH IT … SO, WE DECIDED TO PARCEL IT OUT INTO PIECES. SO, FRANCES DID THE BACK, BEV DID THE SHOULDER AREA AT THE FRONT, AND I DID THE LOWER AREA AT THE FRONT. AND THEN BEV SEWED IT TOGETHER, AND THEN I EMBELLISHED IT AT THE END.” TO MAKE THE VEST, THE WOMEN USED FABRIC FROM THEIR COLLECTIONS: “WE KIND OF LOOKED AT THE MATERIALS THAT WE HAD, AND WE HAD QUITE A SELECTION! … AND TRIED TO DECIDE WHAT KINDS OF COLOURS OR TEXTURES, THINGS THAT WE COULD DRAW FROM ON OUR OWN PIECES, AND SOMETIMES WE SHARED THEM WITH THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT WERE – YOU KNOW, IF A PIECE OF MY FABRIC FIT BETTER IN BEV’S AREA, THEN I JUST GAVE HER, AND SHE COULD DECIDE WHETHER SHE’D USE IT OR NOT. AND THEN WE EACH TOOK OUR BITS HOME. BEV DID HER PART FIRST, AND THEN I ADDED MINE TO IT, SO SHE STARTED ON THE FRONT AND THEN I ADDED LATER, AND FRANCES DID THE BACK INDEPENDENTLY OF EACH OTHER. SO WE REALLY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT THE WHOLE PIECE WAS GOING TO LOOK LIKE UNTIL IT CAME TOGETHER AS ONE. AND THEN, ONCE THE PIECE WAS TOGETHER, IT WAS MEANT TO BE SHOWED AT THE TEXTILE GUILD MEETING IN MARCH, AND WE HAD A LITTLE FASHION SHOW, AND WE SHOWED IT OFF, AND RESULTING FROM THE PIECES THAT CAME TOGETHER AT THAT TIME, WE HAD A, WE WERE INVITED TO SHOW THE ARTWORK IN THE DISPLAY CASES AT CASA FOR SIX WEEKS.” CHERYL DESCRIBES THE PIECE: “SO THE IMAGERY IN THE PIECE, AT THE FRONT, WE HAVE THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA REPRESENTED ON THE TOP, THE SHOULDER AREAS. SO, THE MOUNTAINS, THE COULEES, THE TREES, THE VALLEY, THE WATER. AND THEN IT GOES DOWN TO THE LOWER, WHAT WE WOULD IMAGINE THE UNDERGROUND LAYERS LOOK LIKE IN THE EARTH, THE GEOLOGY, THE WATER TRAVELLING UNDERGROUND, THE ROCKS THE SOIL, THINGS LIKE THAT. AND THEN ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE VEST, WE SEE ALL OF THAT DISRUPTED DURING THE FRACKING PROCESS. WE SEE FRACTURING HAPPENING. THE WATER AND THE EARTH ARE GETTING ALL MIXED TOGETHER AND DAMAGED AND, THE BIG EMBELLISHMENT ACROSS THE BACK, THERE IS A SERIES OF GOLD KEYS RIGHT ACROSS THE BACK OF THE VEST, AND THEY ARE, ACTUALLY, WE HAD JUST MOVED OUT OF THE BOWMAN ARTS CENTRE AT THAT PERIOD IN TIME, AND WE HAD A LOT OF STUDIO KEYS LEFT OVER THAT WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH, SO WE JUST SEWED THEM ON THERE, AND THEY REPRESENT THE DRILLING COMPANY THAT WAS PROPOSING TO DO THE FRACKING IN WEST LETHBRIDGE. SO, IT’S SUBTLE, BUT THERE IS KIND OF A MESSAGE THERE. AND THERE’S ALSO A BUTTON ON THE BACK FROM THE ANTI-FRACKING CAMPAIGN.” CHERYL WAS MADE CUSTODIAN OF THE VEST BECAUSE SHE WAS “SORT OF THE PROJECT LEADER … IT WAS ALSO MEANT TO FIT ME, SO I THINK THAT’S ALSO WHY I AM THE ONE THAT HAS CUSTODY OF IT.” SHE IS PROUD OF HOW THE GROUP COLLABORATION TURNED OUT AND FINDS IT A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO PART WITH THE VEST: “IT IS HARD TO PART WITH IT, BUT I CAN’T, I MEAN IT’S SORT OF A SNAPSHOT IN TIME. I MEAN IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS VERY CURRENT AND IMPORTANT, AND I THINK WE ADDED SOMETHING TO THE CONVERSATION BY HAVING THIS ON DISPLAY AT THE TIME WHERE DECISION MAKING WAS HAPPENING. BUT I DON’T REALLY KNOW, LIKE I’M NOT GOING TO WEAR IT TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY OR SOMETHING, (LAUGHS) SO, I DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO WITH IT SO.” INCLUDED IN THE DONATION PAPER WORK IS A SMALL DESCRIPTION OF THE VEST, FROM WHEN IT WAS DISPLAYED. THE TUXEDO SET – COMPLETE WITH JACKET, PANTS, VEST, TWO BOWTIES, AND A CIGAR THAT WAS FOUND IN THE JACKET POCKET – CAME TO THE MUSEUM FROM DONORS BRUCE AND JOAN HAIG. THE TUXEDO AND THE PIECES THAT WENT ALONG WITH IT BELONGED TO BRUCE’S FATHER, DR. ARTHUR HAIG (1901-1986). BRUCE AND JOAN HAIG DONATED THE COLLECTION OF ITEMS TO THE GALT MUSEUM, WHERE COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED AN INTERVIEW WITH THE COUPLE ON NOVEMBER 25, 2016. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM THAT INTERVIEW: “IN 1977, WE MOVED INTO BRUCE’S PARENTS’ HOUSE,” JOAN STATED AS SHE BEGAN TO SPEAK ABOUT THE TUXEDO ENSEMBLE, “AND MOTHER, [PHYLLIS HAIG (NEE HARRISON)] HAD [THE TUXEDO] IN A BOX IN THE STOREROOM. THE TUXEDO SET – COMPLETE WITH JACKET, PANTS, VEST, TWO BOWTIES, AND A CIGAR THAT WAS FOUND IN THE JACKET POCKET – CAME TO THE MUSEUM FROM DONORS BRUCE AND JOAN HAIG. THE TUXEDO AND THE PIECES THAT WENT ALONG WITH IT BELONGED TO BRUCE’S FATHER, DR. ARTHUR HAIG (1901-1986). BRUCE AND JOAN HAIG DONATED THE COLLECTION OF ITEMS TO THE GALT MUSEUM, WHERE COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED AN INTERVIEW WITH THE COUPLE ON NOVEMBER 25, 2016. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM THAT INTERVIEW: “IN 1977, WE MOVED INTO BRUCE’S PARENTS’ HOUSE,” JOAN STATED AS SHE BEGAN TO SPEAK ABOUT THE TUXEDO ENSEMBLE, “AND MOTHER, [PHYLLIS HAIG (NEE HARRISON)] HAD [THE TUXEDO] IN A BOX IN THE STOREROOM. SHE HAD IT MARKED TO GO TO THE APARTMENT [THEY LATER MOVED TO], BUT THEY NEVER TOOK IT. BRUCE’S DAD HAD HAD A SEVERE STROKE AND WAS UNABLE TO WEAR IT ANYMORE, SO SHE JUST LEFT IT. IT SAT ON THE TOP SHELF THERE UNTIL WE MOVED JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO. OUR DAUGHTER IS NOW IN THE HOUSE, AND THIS BOX WAS STILL ON THE SHELF IN THE STOREROOM, SO SHE DEPOSITED IT AT OUR HOUSE.” “[WE WERE ALWAYS AWARE OF THE ITEMS’ EXISTENCE, BECAUSE] AND IT WAS PA’S TUX.” PA BEING BRUCE’S FATHER, DR. ARTHUR HAIG, AS JOAN EXPLAINED. SHE CONTINUED, “IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU’RE GOING TO JUST DUMP. WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT, SO WE JUST KEPT LOOKING AT THE BOX THAT SAID, ‘PA’S TUX,’ ON THE SIDE.” IN THE INTERVIEW, BRUCE ASKED JOAN IF HE EVER WORE HIS FATHER’S SUIT, SHE REPLIED, “NO, IT’S MILES TOO BIG FOR YOU.” THE HAIG’S BROUGHT IN A PHOTOGRAPH OF DR. HAIG WEARING THE SUIT TAKEN IN NOVEMBER 1963. BRUCE SAID, “AT ABOUT THAT TIME HE WAS HEAVILY INTO MEDICAL POLITICS. HE HAD JUST BEEN APPOINTED THE HEAD OF THE PROVINCE FOR THE CANADIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, THE ALBERTA DIVISION PRESIDENT. THAT’S THE PICTURE THAT WE HAVE IN HERE. IT WAS JUST LIKE A PICTURE THAT WAS TAKEN WITH A CAMERA AT THE HOTEL BEFORE OR AFTER A DINNER-TYPE THING. WE FIGURED THAT’S [THE TIME PERIOD] WHEN HE WAS WEARING IT. HE USED TO WEAR A TUX [OFTEN]. I HAVE A PICTURE FROM BACK IN THE TWENTIES – HE GRADUATED ABOUT ’26 FROM MCGILL – AND THERE’S A PICTURE OF HIM IN A TUXEDO. IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN [THE ONE WE ARE DONATING], BECAUSE HE DIDN’T MOVE TO LETHBRIDGE UNTIL 1929.” EXPLAINING HER FATHER-IN-LAW’S NEED FOR SUCH ATTIRE, JOAN ADDED, “THEY DID HAVE A LOT OF FORMAL EVENTS AND FORMAL PARTIES. HOUSE PARTIES IN THOSE DAYS WERE FORMAL. WOMEN WORE LONG GOWNS, AND MEN WORE TUXES.” SOCIAL LISTINGS PUBLISHED IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ACCOUNT VARIOUS ENGAGEMENTS DR. AND MRS. HAIG ATTENDED OR HOSTED TOGETHER, INCLUDING ONE PUBLISHED IN THE JUNE 18, 1957 PAPER. IT IS STATED, “DR. ARTHUR HAIG OF LETHBRIDGE, PRESIDENT ELECT OF THE ALBERTA DIVISION OF THE CANADIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, AND MRS. HAIG, WILL BE AMONG THE GUESTS AT THE RECEPTION TO BE GIVEN BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE CANADIAN MEDIAL ASSOCIATION...” DURING THE 2016 INTERVIEW, BRUCE CONTINUED, “HE WAS HEAVILY INTO THE KINSMAN AND THEN ROTARY CLUB. HE JUST LOVED THOSE SERVICE CLUBS. I’M SURE HE WORE [THE TUX] MANY TIMES FOR [RELATED EVENTS].” ON MAY 4, 1936, THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD REPORTED, “DINING ROOM OF THE ASSINIBOIA HOTEL HERE WAS COMFORTABLY FILLED BY SCORES OF YOUNG BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL MEN RESIDENT IN THREE ALBERTA CITIES, SATURDAY NIGHT, AS THE RECENTLY ORGANIZED KINSMEN CLUB OF MEDICINE HAT WAS FORMALLY PRESENT WITH ITS CHARTER LINKING IT WITH 50 OTHER KIN CLUBS THROUGHOUT THE DOMINION. CONFERRING OF THE CHARTER WAS PERFORMED BY DR. ARTHUR HAIG OF LETHBRIDGE, KIN GOVERNOR FOR DISTRICT NO. 4.” “MEN WORE FORMAL ATTIRE,” JOAN EXPLAINED, “SO DID WOMEN TO ALL OF THEIR FUNCTIONS. [BRUCE’S FATHER] WAS QUITE A PROMINENT DOCTOR. HE WAS THE CHIEF OF SURGERY AT ST. MIKE’S, AND THEN AT THE MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL. HE WAS A BIG MAN ON CAMPUS, AND KNEW IT.” UPON EXAMINATION OF THE TUXEDO JACKET’S LABEL, IT IS NOTED THAT THE JACKET IS FROM 1956. BRUCE EXPLAINED, “[IN] 1956, I’M AT UNIVERSITY. AT U OF S, SASKATOON [DURING THE TIME]… WE DO HAVE A [HOME] MOVIE OF A PARTY IN 1940 OR ’41, IN THE BASEMENT, AND I THINK THEY’RE ALL WEARING TUXES THERE.” “[MY PARENTS] WERE VERY SOCIAL. HE WAS FROM CLARESHOLM. [MY FATHER’S] FATHER HAD DIED OF TUBERCULOSIS OF THE SPINE. HE HAD BEEN MISTREATED BY A CHIROPRACTOR FOR HIS BAD BACK, AND THEY FOUND THAT HE HAD TUBERCULOSIS. [AFTER MY GRANDFATHER’S PASSING], HIS MOTHER GROOMED TWO OR THREE OF THE KIDS TO BECOME DOCTORS, PROBABLY AS A RESULT OF THIS TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE. THEY REALLY BECAME THE NOUVEAU RICHE, BECAUSE IN THE ‘20’S AND ‘30’S, MEDICAL PEOPLE WERE ON A PARTICULAR PEDESTAL THAT THEY DON’T HAVE NOW BECAUSE OF SOCIALIZED MEDICINE. THEY HAD A CERTAIN OPINION OF THEMSELVES. THEY DRESSED UP AND THEY WERE IMPORTANT PEOPLE AND THAT’S JUST THE WAY IT IS.” ABOUT DR. ARTHUR HAIG’S PRACTICE, JOAN ADDED, “HE HAD A CONTRACT WITH THE GALT MINE, SO WHEN OTHER PEOPLE WERE STRUGGLING VERY HARD, HE WAS DOING PRETTY WELL. IN 1937 THEY BUILT THAT HOUSE. [THEY] HAD IT CUSTOM BUILT FOR THEM, SO THAT INDICATES THAT THERE WASN’T A LACK OF FUNDS AT ALL. THEY SOCIALIZED IN THESE CIRCLES. LETHBRIDGE WAS A VERY, VERY CLIQUEY TOWN; AND THEY WERE IN THE TOP CLIQUE.” “THE NORTH SIDE, OF COURSE, WERE THE LABORING GROUPS AND THE SOUTH SIDE WERE THE BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONALS AND NEVER THE TWAIN SHOULD MEET,” BRUCE ELABORATED ABOUT EARLY LETHBRIDGE SOCIETY, LAUGHING. “HE KNEW A LOT OF PEOPLE, AND I KNOW THAT EVEN NOW I RUN INTO PEOPLE THAT I THINK ARE OLDER THAN GOD, AND THEY SAY, ‘OH, DR. HAIG DELIVERED ME,’” JOAN ILLUMINATED, “AND OF COURSE IN THOSE DAYS, DOCTORS WORKED 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. WHEN THEY GOT CALLED THEY WENT, SO HE EARNED HIS TIME OFF AND HIS FRIVOLITIES. HE WAS A VERY INTERESTING MAN. HE AND I GOT ON QUITE WELL.” “WITH THE ROTARY [CLUB] THEY USED TO HAVE THESE BIG MASQUERADE PARTIES. BRUCE’S MOTHER AND I ONCE DRESSED UP. SHE PROBABLY WORE THIS [JACKET TO ONE OF THESE PARTIES] – DRESSED UP IN TUXEDOES AND TOP HATS AND THE WHOLE THING. I BORROWED ONE FROM A DRAMA CLUB. AND [DR. ARTHUR HAIG] LIT US EACH A CIGAR, SO THAT IT WOULD HAVE ASHES ON THE END. WE WEREN’T SMOKING THEM, BUT WE HAD CIGARS WITH US. [WE] HAD LOTS OF FUN. THAT WAS AFTER [BRUCE’S FATHER’S] STROKE… [AND AT THESE EVENTS] DIFFERENT GROUPS WOULD HAVE A TABLE. THEY DIDN’T BUY A TABLE, BUT THEY WOULD CLAIM A TABLE AND YOU DIDN’T DARE SIT AT THE HAIG CLINIC TABLE. AND [THERE] WAS THE CAMPBELL CLINIC TABLE, AND SO WE WENT AND SAT AT IT, AND BRUCE’S BROTHER WAS THERE AND DIDN’T RECOGNIZE HIS OWN MOTHER AND TOLD US TO GET LOST… [BRUCE’S MOTHER] LAUGHED ABOUT THAT FOR YEARS AFTERWARDS, ABOUT HOW HER OWN SON HAD TRIED TO THROW HER OUT OF THE PARTY,” JOAN RECALLED AS SHE LAUGHED. THE CIGAR DONATED AS PART OF THE COLLECTION IS A PART OF THE TUXEDO’S STORY. “IT FELL OUT OF THE POCKET WHEN I TOOK THE THING OUT OF THE BOX,” JOAN EXPLAINED, “HE SMOKED CIGARS FOR MOST OF HIS LIFE. SUPINA WAS THE OWNER OF SUPINA’S MERCANTILE ON 13TH STREET NORTH, LETHBRIDGE. THIS DRESS SHIRT WAS PART OF THE STAGE OUTFIT WORN BY JOE HORHOZER WHEN HE WAS THE ACCORDION PLAYER AND MUSIC ARRANGER FOR A WELL-KNOWN LETHBRIDGE MUSICAL GROUP CALLED THE ALBERTA RANCH BOYS. THE GROUP FORMED IN THE SUMMER OF 1937 WITH MEMBERS LOUIS (LOU) GONZY, MATT (BUCK) WASOWICH, PETER (CURLY) GURLOCK, REMO BACEDA, AND ‘LITTLE JOE’ HORHOZER. AND HE WAS EXCEPTIONALLY GIFTED WITH THE ACCORDION; THAT’S WHAT EVERYBODY SAID, THAT THERE ISN’T ANYONE, AT LEAST AROUND THIS COUNTRY, THAT COULD COMPARE WITH HIM.” DESCRIBED IN THEIR SOUVENIR BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1941 AS “PROFESSIONAL RADIO ENTERTAINERS”, THE ‘ALBERTA RANCH BOYS’ WERE FORMED WHEN THE LOCAL EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE PARADE WAS FOUND WANTING FOR A “COWBOY BAND” AS PART OF ITS LINEUP. ACCOLADES FOR THE PARADE ACT FOLLOWED, INSPIRING THE GROUP “TO EMBARK ON THE LONG ROAD TO FAME AND FORTUNE”. IN A YEAR’S TIME – AND AFTER TOURING THROUGH ALBERTA AND BC – THE BAND ENDED UP IN VANCOUVER. THERE, IT ESTABLISHED ITSELF, ACCORDING TO THE BOOKLET, AS “WESTERN CANADA’S MOST VERSATILE STAGE AND DANCE FAVOURITE,” BROADCASTING ITS COWBOY MELODIES FOR OVER TWO CONTINUOUS YEARS VIA CKWX (VANCOUVER’S LARGEST RADIO STUDIO AT THE TIME). DURING THE WAR, IT DONATED ITS TALENTS TO THE PROMOTION OF WAR SAVINGS CERTIFICATES. ONE VICTORY RALLY SONG FOR STAMPS WAS “WE’VE BOUGHT THEM BEFORE AND WE’LL BUY THEM AGAIN.” BY EARLY JAN-FEB 1943, THE BAND HAD PEAKED. ONE MEMBER IS REPORTED TO HAVE ENLISTED IN THE CANADIAN ARMY WHILE OTHERS, ACCORDING TO THE DONOR, “GOT SICK”. “THEY DID A LOT IN TORONTO.” RECALLED EVERAL IN AN INTERVIEW. “[IT WAS FROM] TORONTO THEN THEY COULD HAVE GONE [TO NEW YORK] - THAT’S WHERE THEY WERE OFFERED THE BIG JOB OF RECORDING AND BEING ON TV…BUT THEN [JOE] SAYS THAT HE DOESN’T CARE, BECAUSE HE SAYS IF HE WOULD HAVE WENT, HE WOULDN’T HAVE MET ME, SO, I MEAN, THAT WAS A NICE THING TO SAY. HE SAYS LIFE TURNED OUT GOOD FOR HIM.” EVERAL WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS AT THE TIME OF THEIR MEETING. AFTER FINDING OUT, SHE SAID, “WELL, I THOUGHT, GEE WHIZ, HE JUST ISN’T AN EVERYDAY JOE AND EVERYBODY IN TOWN KNEW HIM AND ADMIRED HIM. YEAH, IT MADE ME A LITTLE MORE HAPPY.” OF THE PERFORMANCE COSTUME EVERAL HORHOZER SAID: “THEY WORE [THE SAME UNIFORM] WHEN THEY PLAYED AT THE TRIANON FOR A WHILE AND THEY JUST STARTED TO USE SUITS … WELL HE DIDN’T WANT - SEE, WHEN THEY STARTED PLAYING AT THE TRIANON. THEN I TELL YOU, THEY START WEARING MORE BAND [CLOTHING] - LIKE, THEY HAD DIFFERENT BLAZERS, COLOURED BLAZERS – BLUE ONES AND RED ONES AND ALL WORE BLAZERS THEN. ‘CAUSE THEY WANTED TO BECOME LIKE A DANCE BAND, I GUESS YOU’D SAY.” “HE WOULD NEVER FORGET THAT TIME [WITH THE RANCH BOYS],” HORHOZER SAID OF HER HUSBAND, “HE TALKED ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME. IN 1961, THE STATION AND THE BROADCAST WERE PRESENTED WITH A NATIONAL LIBERTY AWARD FOR “TV STATION SHOWMANSHIP” AND “BEST LOCAL PROGRAMMING.” IN HIS TIME, ‘LITTLE JOE’ PLAYED WITH ROY ROGERS, GENE AUTRY, AND TOMMY HUNTER. HE DIED IN 2010 AT AGE 89. EVERAL HORHOZER PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE 6 YEARS LATER ON JUNE 6, 2016 AT THE AGE OF 88 YEARS. MEN’S PANTS, COMMERCIALLY MADE. KHAKI-COLOURED, SYNTHETIC FABRIC BODY WITH BLUE FABRIC ACCENTS AT SEAT, THE BELT LOOPS, SCALLOPED POCKET FLAPS AND CENTER LEG STRIPE. INSIDE WAISTBAND AND POCKET LINING DISPLAY MULTIPLE HAND INK MARKINGS, INCLUDING NUMBERS AND “HORHOZER”. ATTACHED TO THE HEM OF THE PANTS ARE ELASTIC STIRRUPS (ONE BLACK AND ONE KHAKI-COLOURED). THERE IS A STRONG CREASE DOWN THE CENTER OF THE PANTS. FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION. ON THE RIGHT SIDE THERE IS A STAIN AND SLIGHT TEARING AT THE BOTTOM HEM. THERE IS A STAIN AT THE KNEE, AND TEARING AT THE POCKET. THE BOTTOM BUTTON OF THE FLY HAS BEEN LOST. THERE IS TEARING AT THE CROTCH SEAM. ON THE LEFT SIDE, THERE IS TEARING NEAR THE POCKET. THERE IS SLIGHT STAINING ON THE OVERALL SURFACE OF THE PANTS.

EVERAL HORHOZER (NÉE SUPINA) WAS BORN IN LETHBRIDGE IN THE YEAR OF 1927 TO HER PARENTS DONAH (NÉE HILL) AND NICHOLAS SUPINA. SUPINA WAS THE OWNER OF SUPINA’S MERCANTILE ON 13TH STREET NORTH, LETHBRIDGE. THESE PANTS WERE PART OF THE STAGE OUTFIT WORN BY JOE HORHOZER WHEN HE WAS THE ACCORDION PLAYER AND MUSIC ARRANGER FOR A WELL-KNOWN LETHBRIDGE MUSICAL GROUP CALLED THE ALBERTA RANCH BOYS. THE GROUP FORMED IN THE SUMMER OF 1937 WITH MEMBERS LOUIS (LOU) GONZY, MATT (BUCK) WASOWICH, PETER (CURLY) GURLOCK, REMO BACEDA, AND ‘LITTLE JOE’ HORHOZER. COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS (ON APRIL 2, APRIL 16, AND MAY 7, 2015) WITH HORHOZER REGARDING A GROUP OF ARTIFACTS SHE DONATED TO THE MUSEUM. THE INFORMATION BELOW HAS COME FROM THESE INTERVIEWS AND LETHBRIDGE HERALD RESEARCH REGARDING THE HORHOZER FAMILY HISTORY. IN THE INTERVIEW, HORHOZER DESCRIBED HOW SHE MET HER HUSBAND, JOE HORHOZER, WHEN HE CAME TO WORK FOR SUPINA’S MERCANTILE. JOE HORHOZER WAS THE ACCORDION PLAYER AND MUSIC ARRANGER FOR A WELL-KNOWN LETHBRIDGE MUSICAL GROUP CALLED THE ALBERTA RANCH BOYS. THE GROUP FORMED IN THE SUMMER OF 1937 WITH MEMBERS LOUIS (LOU) GONZY, MATT (BUCK) WASOWICH, PETER (CURLY) GURLOCK, REMO BACEDA, AND ‘LITTLE JOE’ HORHOZER. HORHOZER SAYS OF HER HUSBAND: “I WOULD CALL HIM THE LEAD INSTRUMENT BECAUSE AN ACCORDION IS, EH? AND HE WAS EXCEPTIONALLY GIFTED WITH THE ACCORDION; THAT’S WHAT EVERYBODY SAID, THAT THERE ISN’T ANYONE, AT LEAST AROUND THIS COUNTRY, THAT COULD COMPARE WITH HIM.” DESCRIBED IN THEIR SOUVENIR BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1941 AS “PROFESSIONAL RADIO ENTERTAINERS”, THE ‘ALBERTA RANCH BOYS’ WERE FORMED WHEN THE LOCAL EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE PARADE WAS FOUND WANTING FOR A “COWBOY BAND” AS PART OF ITS LINEUP. ACCOLADES FOR THE PARADE ACT FOLLOWED, INSPIRING THE GROUP “TO EMBARK ON THE LONG ROAD TO FAME AND FORTUNE”. IN A YEAR’S TIME – AND AFTER TOURING THROUGH ALBERTA AND BC – THE BAND ENDED UP IN VANCOUVER. THERE, IT ESTABLISHED ITSELF, ACCORDING TO THE BOOKLET, AS “WESTERN CANADA’S MOST VERSATILE STAGE AND DANCE FAVOURITE,” BROADCASTING ITS COWBOY MELODIES FOR OVER TWO CONTINUOUS YEARS VIA CKWX (VANCOUVER’S LARGEST RADIO STUDIO AT THE TIME). DURING THE WAR, IT DONATED ITS TALENTS TO THE PROMOTION OF WAR SAVINGS CERTIFICATES. ONE VICTORY RALLY SONG FOR STAMPS WAS “WE’VE BOUGHT THEM BEFORE AND WE’LL BUY THEM AGAIN.” BY EARLY JAN-FEB 1943, THE BAND HAD PEAKED. ONE MEMBER IS REPORTED TO HAVE ENLISTED IN THE CANADIAN ARMY WHILE OTHERS, ACCORDING TO THE DONOR, “GOT SICK”. “THEY DID A LOT IN TORONTO.” RECALLED EVERAL IN AN INTERVIEW. “[IT WAS FROM] TORONTO THEN THEY COULD HAVE GONE [TO NEW YORK] - THAT’S WHERE THEY WERE OFFERED THE BIG JOB OF RECORDING AND BEING ON TV…BUT THEN [JOE] SAYS THAT HE DOESN’T CARE, BECAUSE HE SAYS IF HE WOULD HAVE WENT, HE WOULDN’T HAVE MET ME, SO, I MEAN, THAT WAS A NICE THING TO SAY. HE SAYS LIFE TURNED OUT GOOD FOR HIM.” EVERAL WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS AT THE TIME OF THEIR MEETING. AFTER FINDING OUT, SHE SAID, “WELL, I THOUGHT, GEE WHIZ, HE JUST ISN’T AN EVERYDAY JOE AND EVERYBODY IN TOWN KNEW HIM AND ADMIRED HIM. YEAH, IT MADE ME A LITTLE MORE HAPPY.” OF THE PERFORMANCE COSTUME EVERAL HORHOZER SAID: “THEY WORE [THE SAME UNIFORM] WHEN THEY PLAYED AT THE TRIANON FOR A WHILE AND THEY JUST STARTED TO USE SUITS … WELL HE DIDN’T WANT - SEE, WHEN THEY STARTED PLAYING AT THE TRIANON. THEN I TELL YOU, THEY START WEARING MORE BAND [CLOTHING] - LIKE, THEY HAD DIFFERENT BLAZERS, COLOURED BLAZERS – BLUE ONES AND RED ONES AND ALL WORE BLAZERS THEN. ‘CAUSE THEY WANTED TO BECOME LIKE A DANCE BAND, I GUESS YOU’D SAY.” “HE WOULD NEVER FORGET THAT TIME [WITH THE RANCH BOYS],” HORHOZER SAID OF HER HUSBAND, “HE TALKED ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME.
