BREAST POCKET HAS BADGE EMBROIDERED WITH "BRITISH EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE CANADIAN LEGION". RED PLASTIC POPPY PINNED TO LEFT LAPEL (REMOVED AND STORED SEPARATELY). INTERIOR RIGHT BREAST POCKET HAS HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY TAG WITH LOGO. POCKET CONTAINS THREE FUNERAL SERVICE PAMPHLETS, INCLUDING: 1) PAMPHLET WITH IMAGE OF CHURCH TOWER ON COVER AND "IN REMEMBRANCE"; IN MEMORY OF "CLARENCE R. HE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE SHRINE CLUB, SERVING WITH THE CLUB FOR OVER 33 YEARS. HE WAS THE CLUB PRESIDENT IN 1952. HE WAS ALSO MADE AN HONOURARY LIFE MEMBER OF THE ALBERTA SUGAR BEET GROWERS ASSOCIATION FOR 31 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE ORGANIZATION, WHERE HE SERVED AS LABOUR ADVISOR AND SECRETARY/MANAGER. HARRY ALSO SPENT OVER 40 YEARS WORKING AS A FILM PROJECTIONIST, HAVING WORKED IN VARIOUS THEATRES INCLUDING: IN LETHBRIDGE, THE ROXY, EMPRESS, CAPITOL, AND PARAMOUNT; IN BOW ISLAND, RED DEER, STETTLER, AND CALGARY. HARRY WAS ALSO AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LIONS CLUB IN LETHBRIDGE. DURING WWII HARRY WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE LION INFANTRY TEAM IN THE VICTORY LOAN CAMPAIGN. AN ARTICLE FROM JULY 6, 1943 RECOUNTS THAT HARRY WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AT SELLING WAR BONDS: “MR BOYSE … TOOK OUT A ‘STAMP-O-GRAM’ CARD AND WITH 18 CALLS SOLD $103 WORTH OF WAR SAVINGS STAMPS. A ‘DEPTH CHARGE’ COSTS $90 AND MR. BOYSE FEELS THAT HE WILL PERSONALLY BE ABLE TO SELL FOUR ‘DEPTH CHARGES’ FOR THE CORVETTE LETHBRIDGE.” ANOTHER ARTICLE FROM JUNE 18, 1943 EXPLAINS THAT HARRY HAD JUST COMPLETED A SUCCESSFUL TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE LIONS CLUB. THE ARTICLE CONTINUES SAYING: “’LIONS THROUGHOUT CANADA POINT WITH PRIDE TO THE $117,000 ALREADY SENT OVERSEAS FOR THIS CAUSE. THIS MONEY IS ENTRUSTED TO THE WAIFS AND STRAYS SOCIETY, WHICH ADMINISTERS HOMES FOR LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN EVACTUATED FROM TARGET AREAS, OR WHOSE PARENTS HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED IN THE ‘BLITZ’’, [MR. BOYSE] SAID.” IRENE BOYSE (NEE JOHNSON) WAS BORN IN BANTRY, ND ON AUGUST 20, 1908 AND MOVED TO CANADA IN 1909. SHE WAS RAISED AND EDUCATED IN THE FOREMOST, AB AREA. THEY MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE FROM LACOMBE, ALBERTA, AFTER DON’S FATHER STUART ACCEPTED THE POSITION OF ADMINISTRATOR OF THE GALT REHABILITATION CENTRE, LOCATED IN THE OLD GALT HOSPITAL BUILDING. IN 1963 THE FAMILY MOVED TO LANGLEY, B.C. WHERE STUART BECAME THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE LANGLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. WHILE IN LETHBRIDGE, DON WAS ACTIVE IN BOY SCOUTS, ATTAINING QUEEN’S SCOUT STATUS AND BEING CHOSEN AS ONE OF TWO LETHBRIDGE SCOUTS TO TRAVEL TO NEW MEXICO ON AN “ADVENTURE TRIP” IN 1963. ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2014, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED DON CHAPMAN ABOUT HIS FAMILY’S TIME IN LETHBRIDGE AND MEMORIES RELATED TO THE SPECIFIC DONATED OBJECTS. CHAPMAN SAID: “I WAS BORN IN 1947 AND WE CAME [TO LETHBRIDGE] BECAUSE MY FATHER GOT A JOB HERE… IT WAS EXCITING. WE HAD NO IDEA WHERE LETHBRIDGE WAS… IT WAS KIND OF LIKE, FINALLY THE FAMILY IS GETTING A FINANCIAL FOOTING AND THERE WAS A CAREER PATH AHEAD… THE MOVE TO LETHBRIDGE WAS KIND OF LIKE A NEW START… CERTAINLY FOR ME, LETHBRIDGE WAS FORMATIVE YEARS… SCOUTING WAS A SIGNIFICANT UNDERTAKING IN MY LIFE, I WAS QUITE COMMITTED TO IT… IT WAS A WAY TO LEARN FUNDAMENTAL LIFE SKILLS AND MEMBERSHIP… YOU WOULD LEARN WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE IN A GROUP, WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE ON A TEAM… I BELONGED TO THE 14TH LETHBRIDGE SCOUT TROOP AND IT WAS CENTERED IN THE MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH… A LOT OF IT WAS CENTERED AROUND AN ANNUAL CAMP. WE WOULD GO OUT FOR AT LEAST A WEEK… INTO THE EASTERN SLOPE OF THE ROCKIES… YOU HAD TO LEARN HOW TO COOK… YOU HAD TO LEARN SURVIVAL SKILLS, YOU HAD TO LEARN HOW TO TIE KNOTS, SINGING AROUND THE CAMPFIRE AT MEETINGS… IT WAS KIND OF A FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE.” OF THIS SPECIFIC OBJECT, CHAPMAN SAID: “IT WAS SIGNIFICANT IN MY LIFE BECAUSE IT REPRESENTED A CERTAIN LEVEL OF ATTAINMENT WITHIN THE BOY SCOUTS OF CANADA. JOHN’S AMBULANCE BADGE SO YOU LEARN THINGS LIKE FIRST AID; THERE’S EVEN A COUPLE [THAT] HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH FARMING… THIS WAS FORESTRY, THIS, SWIMMING… ONCE YOU EARNED A CERTAIN NUMBER OF BADGES THAT WOULD GIVE YOU BRAIDS… THE WHITE AND RED CORDS WERE THE FIRST YOU WOULD GET FOR A CERTAIN NUMBER OF BADGES. THEN YOU WOULD GO FROM THAT TO GREEN AND GOLD… THE GOLD CORD WAS THE HIGHEST YOU COULD GET… THIS IS A LEATHER THONG CALLED THE BUSHMAN’S THONG, AND YOU HAD TO ACQUIRE A CERTAIN NUMBER OF SKILLS, SURVIVAL SKILLS, CAMPING SKILLS, IN ORDER TO EARN THE BUSHMAN’S THONG… THESE STRIPES: IF YOU HAD TWO STRIPES YOU WERE A PATROL LEADER… IF YOU HAD THREE STRIPES YOU WERE THE LEADER OF THE TROOP… AFTER YOU HAD ACHIEVED A CERTAIN NUMBER OF THE REGULAR BADGES, THEN YOU WOULD GET SOME PREMIUM BADGES… IF YOU ACHIEVED A CERTAIN NUMBER OF [PREMIUM] BADGES ON THIS SLEEVE… YOU WOULD ACHIEVE THE LEVEL OF QUEEN’S SCOUT, THE HIGHEST ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU CAN GET. LINGARD WAS A MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE WOLF CUB AND BOY SCOUT TROUPES AS A YOUTH. ON THE WOLF CUBS SWEATER, LINGARD ELABORATED, “THIS WAS INHERITED FROM WHEN MY MOTHER PASSED AWAY [IN 2007]. THAT’S PROBABLY WHERE IT WAS FIRST SO THAT’S ALL I CAN REMEMBER…[THE] LAST TIME I SAW IT…WAS PROBABLY A NUMBER OF YEARS [AGO].” “I CAN REMEMBER THINGS ABOUT CUBS. I DON’T THINK THERE WERE THAT MANY CUB TROUPES BECAUSE THERE WERE ONLY ABOUT 15,000 PEOPLE IN LETHBRIDGE RIGHT AFTER THE WAR SO IT WASN’T THAT BIG OF A PLACE…WE WERE NUMBER 4 SO MAYBE THERE WERE 4 OR 5.” “SCOUTS WAS [THE] ADOLESCENT—PRETTY SOON [I WAS] LESS INTERESTED IN SCOUTS AND MORE INTERESTED IN GIRLS. I ENJOYED CUBS VERY MUCH AND VERA SHIRLEY WAS CERTAINLY A VERY POSITIVE PERSON. EVEN THOUGH DONOR WAS NOT MORMON (OR RELIGIOUS SHE SAYS), MANY OF HER FRIENDS WERE. IN GRADE 12 SHE MOVED TO CALGARY TO ATTEND ST. MARY'S SCHOOL AT THE SACRED HEART CONVENT (EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS NOT ROMAN CATHOLIC EITHER). DONOR SAYS ALTHOUGH SHE IS NOT RELIGIOUS, SHE ENJOYS RELIGION AND LEARNING FROM IT. COSTUMES WERE WORN BY THE YOUNGEST MEMBERS OF THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE LOCATED IN RAYMOND, ALBERTA. FOR AT LEAST FIFTY YEARS, CHILDREN DRESSED UP IN THE ELABORATE GARMENTS AS PART OF RELIGION’S ‘CHIGO’ OR YOUNG-CHILDREN CEREMONY. THE PROCESSIONAL EVENT REQUIRED THAT THE CHILDREN DRESS AS HEAVENLY BEINGS. BOYS WORE A STIFF HAT OF LACQUERED GAUZE CALLED AN ‘EBOSHI’ WHILE GIRLS WORE THE CROWN OF THE PHOENIX BIRD KNOWN AS A ‘TENKAN’. THE CEREMONY WAS CONDUCTED AT THE RAYMOND BUDDHIST TEMPLE EVERY FIVE YEARS, COMMENCING ON THE DATE OF THE TEMPLE’S DEDICATION (1929) AND ENDING ON ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN 1979. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE PAPER LOTUS FLOWERS WERE MADE LOCALLY AND THE GARMENTS WERE IMPORTED FROM JAPAN. FOR ALMOST EIGHTY YEARS, THE TEMPLE SERVED THE SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF MANY AMONG SOUTHERN ALBERTA’S JAPANESE COMMUNITY. IT ACTED AS A CENTRE FOR TRADITIONAL BUDDHIST TEACHING AND JAPANESE CULTURE UNTIL ITS CLOSING IN 2006. THESE COSTUMES, IN ADDITION TO OTHER SPIRITUAL OBJECTS INCLUDING THE TEMPLE’S SHRINE, WERE DONATED TO THE GALT AS PART OF THE TEMPLE’S CLOSING AND EVENTUAL SALE. CEREMONY WHERE THIS COSTUME WAS LAST WORN WAS PERFORMED FOR THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE'S FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN 1979. PERFORMED FOR THE TEMPLE'S INAUGURATION, 10TH, 20TH, 25, 30, 35, 40...ETC EVERY 5TH YEAR. DONOR HAS PHOTOS OF COSTUMES BEING WORN DURING THE ANNIVERSARIES (SEE PERMANENT FILE). VISUAL DOCUMENTATION OF O-CHIGO COSTUMES, REPRESENTING THE ONE DONATED, CAN BE FOUND IN THE GALT’S ARCHIVES, RELATED TO THE 2009 DEDICATION EVENT. CHESTERFIELD STYLE OVERCOAT. BLACK WOOL, WITH A FAINT PINSTRIPE PATTERN ON OUTSIDE. HAS NOTCHED LAPELS; LAPELS END IN A V-SHAPE; COLLAR IS NOT AS WIDE AS LAPEL. JACKET IS DOUBLE BREASTED; BUTTONS ARE BLACK PLASTIC. HAS 1 FLAPPED WELT POCKET ON OUTSIDE RIGHT, AND TWO FLAPPED WELT POCKETS ON OUTSIDE, LEFT. INSIDE OF JACKET HAS TWO WELT POCKETS, ONE ON RIGHT BREAST, AND ONE ON LEFT WAIST. A TAG INSIDE RIGHT BREAST POCKET READS "14708 15/6 G.2X 372 PASSED NO 76". THERE ARE ALSO THREE BUTTONS SEWN ONTO INSIDE OF JACKET, TWO SMALL AND ONE LARGE. INSIDE OF JACKET HAS A BLACK SATIN? LINING. CUFFS OF SLEEVES EACH HAVE 4 MOCK PLASTIC BUTTONS. AT BACK OF COAT, BOTTOM IS SPLIT. THERE IS A WHITISH SPOT ON BACK OF COAT.

THE CHESTERFIELD COAT TRADITIONALLY HAD A VELVET COLLAR, WHICH THIS COAT DOES NOT, BUT OTHERWISE IS THE SAME STYLE. THE CHESTERFIELD COAT WAS POPULAR IN THE LATE 1920S THROUGH 1940, BUT THE PLASTIC BUTTONS ON THIS COAT INDICATE THAT THE COAT WAS MADE AFTER WORLD WAR II. POSSIBLY MADE TO REPRODUCE AN EARLIER POPULAR STYLE. DONOR IS A HIGH SCHOOL PHYS. ED. TEACHER. SHE DID DRAMA IN SCHOOLS AND LOCAL THEATRE, AND ENTIRE COLLECTION WAS GIVEN TO HER BY LOCAL PEOPLE. **** NARRATIVE AND OVERCOAT INSIGHT BELOW SUBMITTED BY DONOR AND COLLECTIONS VOLUNTEER GAIL HOLLAND ON 19 APRIL 2011. “DONOR IS A TEACHER, PRIMARILY JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCIENCES, AND GIFTED PROGRAM. SHE HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN ASPECTS OF LOCAL THEATRE WORK FOR MANY YEARS, INCLUDING SCHOOL DRAMA PRODUCTIONS AND COMMUNITY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS, NAMELY LETHBRIDGE MUSICAL THEATRE AND PLAYGOERS OF LETHBRIDGE. WITH AN INTEREST IN PERIOD TYPE FASHIONS AND DRESS, AND THEATRICAL COSTUMING, OVER THE YEARS SHE HAD GATHERED A SMALL COLLECTION, OF SUCH COSTUME PIECES OR GARMENTS. THESE ITEMS WERE ACQUIRED FROM LOCAL AND AREA PEOPLE WHO HAD BECOME AWARE OF THESE INTERESTS AND PASSED THEM ALONG TO HER. THEY WERE STORED IN HER HOME IN ORDER TO MORE EFFECTIVELY PRESERVE THEM. SOME PIECES WERE USED IN PRODUCTIONS, SOME SERVED AS REFERENCES FOR CONSTRUCTION DETAILS AND METHODS-USEFUL IN REPRODUCTION OF PERIOD DRESS, WHILE OTHERS-THOUGHT NOT USED, CONTINUED TO BE STORED FOR POSSIBLE USE OR REFERENCE .SOME PIECES WERE MADE OF DELICATE FABRICS OR MATERIALS AND WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO USE IN ANY RIGOROUS STAGE MOVEMENTS. SOME GARMENTS WERE OF SMALL SIZES THAT WOULD NOT FIT THE CURRENT SIZES IN GENERAL OF CAST MEMBERS.” “THIS OVERCOAT WAS USED AS A COSTUME PIECE IN THE PRODUCTION OF PLAYGOER’S “LIFE WITH FATHER” IN 1977, WORN BY FRANK FEATHERSTONE PLAYING CLARENCE DAY” ***ON 20 DECEMBER, 2011, GAIL INFORMED COLLECTIONS STAFF THAT SHE VOLUNTEERED WITH LETHBRIDGE’S PLAYGOERS BEGINNING IN 1975. SHE HAD “A GENERAL INTEREST IN ASPECTS OF THEATRE PRODUCTION WORK” AND WAS INTRIGUED BY HOW STORIES WERE BROUGHT TO LIFE HOW SHE COULD “GIVE THEM FORM AND SUBSTANCE ON A THEATRE STAGE”. HOLLAND BEGAN WORKING IN COSTUME CONSTRUCTION INITIALLY FOR PLAYGOERS AND, SOME YEARS LATER, WORKED AS A COSTUME DESIGNER FOR LETHBRIDGE MUSICAL THEATRE (LMT) FOR MANY PRODUCTIONS. “DESIGN WORK, ESPECIALLY PERIOD PIECES, OR SETTINGS” SAID HOLLAND IN 2010, “OFTEN REQUIRED A GREAT DEAL OF EXTENSIVE AND DETAILED RESEARCH AS PART OF PREPARATION FOR A PRODUCTION, SO AS TO BRING SOME ASPECTS OF AUTHENTICITY TO WHAT WAS BEING CREATED.” IN 1981, HOLLAND RECEIVED A “LEMMY AWARD” (LETHBRIDGE EMMY) FOR COSTUME WORK SHE DID FOR THE “THE KING AND I” AND IN RECOGNITION OF WORK SHE DID IN PREVIOUS PRODUCTIONS. HOLLAND HERSELF PARTICIPATED ON STAGE IN THE PLAYGOERS PRODUCTION OF “THE ODD COUPLE” FEMALE VERSION IN 1987. THE LAST PRODUCTION WORKED ON BY HOLLAND FOR PLAYGOERS WAS IN 2006’S “A BEDFULL OF FOREIGNERS”. IN 2008 SHE ASSISTED LMT WITH ITS PRODUCTION OF “ANNIE”. FOR HOLLAND, THERE IS A DEEP “CARE AND CONCERN FOR PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION OF CLOTHING.” HAVING CARRIED OUT MUCH RESEARCH HERSELF, “IT SEEMED APPROPRIATE” SHE SAID, “TO PLACE (HER COLLECTION) WHERE [IT] COULD BE MADE AVAILABLE TO OTHERS, FOR REFERENCE OR FOR CONSTRUCTION METHODS THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL TO OTHERS IN CREATING REPRODUCTION.”
