LEFT SLEEVE HAD YLLW AND GRN THE RIGHT SLEEVE ALSO HAS A BIT OF YLLW. 3. PRPLE HAKAMA SKIRT, LENGTH 56.0, WIDTH 57.8. BATIK REPEATED PATTERN IN TWO ROWS ACROSS BOTTOM HALF OF PANT. SILK RIBBON ACCENTS BELT AREA OF SKIRT. SKIRT TIES ON BOTH SIDES FOR CLOSURE. 4. (2 PCE) BELT IS SHEER WITH GLD IMPRINT OF FLOWER, LENGTH 128.0, WIDTH 4.6.TEXT ON BACK READS, "WOMEN'S BUDDHIST ASS'N, NEW WESTMINSTER B.C."

COSTUMES WERE WORN BY THE YOUNGEST MEMBERS OF THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE LOCATED IN RAYMOND, ALBERTA. FOR AT LEAST FIFTY YEARS, CHILDREN DRESSED UP IN THE ELABORATE GARMENTS AS PART OF RELIGION’S ‘CHIGO’ OR YOUNG-CHILDREN CEREMONY. THE PROCESSIONAL EVENT REQUIRED THAT THE CHILDREN DRESS AS HEAVENLY BEINGS. BOYS WORE A STIFF HAT OF LACQUERED GAUZE CALLED AN ‘EBOSHI’ WHILE GIRLS WORE THE CROWN OF THE PHOENIX BIRD KNOWN AS A ‘TENKAN’. THE CEREMONY WAS CONDUCTED AT THE RAYMOND BUDDHIST TEMPLE EVERY FIVE YEARS, COMMENCING ON THE DATE OF THE TEMPLE’S DEDICATION (1929) AND ENDING ON ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN 1979. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE PAPER LOTUS FLOWERS WERE MADE LOCALLY AND THE GARMENTS WERE IMPORTED FROM JAPAN. FOR ALMOST EIGHTY YEARS, THE TEMPLE SERVED THE SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF MANY AMONG SOUTHERN ALBERTA’S JAPANESE COMMUNITY. IT ACTED AS A CENTRE FOR TRADITIONAL BUDDHIST TEACHING AND JAPANESE CULTURE UNTIL ITS CLOSING IN 2006. THESE COSTUMES, IN ADDITION TO OTHER SPIRITUAL OBJECTS INCLUDING THE TEMPLE’S SHRINE, WERE DONATED TO THE GALT AS PART OF THE TEMPLE’S CLOSING AND EVENTUAL SALE. CEREMONY WHERE THIS COSTUME WAS LAST WORN WAS PERFORMED FOR THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE'S FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN 1979. PERFORMED FOR THE TEMPLE'S INAUGURATION, 10TH, 20TH, 25, 30, 35, 40...ETC EVERY 5TH YEAR. DONOR HAS PHOTOS OF COSTUMES BEING WORN DURING THE ANNIVERSARIES (SEE PERMANENT FILE). DONOR PRESUMES THAT THE MATERIAL DATES TO 1929 TO 1930. SEE P20070014000 FOR INFORMATION ON GIRLS CHIGO COSTUME AND P20030041001 FOR COMPLETE HISTORY ON BUDDHIST TEMPLE. ON APRIL 26, 2009 THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, LOCATED IN LETHBRIDGE, WAS THE SITE OF AN O-CHIGO CHILDREN’S PARADE, HELD AS PART OF THE TEMPLE’S DEDICATION CEREMONY. VISUAL DOCUMENTATION OF O-CHIGO COSTUMES, REPRESENTING THE ONE DONATED, CAN BE FOUND IN THE GALT’S ARCHIVES, RELATED TO THE 2009 DEDICATION EVENT. ADDITIONALLY, O-CHIGO RELATED PHOTOS CAN BE FOUND RELATED TO THE HISTORY OF THE TABER BUDDHIST CHURCH IN THE GALT’S ARCHIVES. FINALLY, IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE ROYAL ALBERTA MUSEUM IS IN POSSESSION OF HISTORIC 40S ERA FOOTAGE OF TEMPLE EVENTS, RELATED TO THE RAM’S COLLECTION OF A SHRINE FROM PICTURE BUTTE.

TRIMMED WITH BLACK SILK BORDER, EMBROIDERED WITH BLUE FLORAL PATTERN. BLUE FLOWERS ALSO EMBROIDERED ON WHITE PORTION OF SKIRT. HEAVILY PLEATED WITH FINE PLEATS, EXCEPT TWO PANELS ON SKIRT WHICH HAVE FINELY EMBROIDERED BUTTERFLY PATTERN IN SHADES OF BLUE, PINK, ORANGE, AND GREEN. FUCHSIA SILK LINING. WIDE PALE BLUE COTTON WAISTBAND WITH REMNANTS OF CRIMSON TIES AT ENDS, WHICH HAVE BEEN TORN OFF. HANDMADE. 4. SCARF. 49.2CM X 49.2CM. ROYAL BLUE COTTON SCARF WITH CIRCLE DESIGN WOVEN INTO FABRIC. SHE EXTRACTED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THE ING FAMILY FROM PERMANENT FILE P19950073001, WHICH CONTAINS A TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW COLLECTIONS TECH KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED WITH HAROLD ING JR., SON OF HAROLD AND MYRA, IN HIS ROOM AT THE LETHBRIDGE HOTEL IN SEPTEMBER 2005. MYRA WAS BORN IN GOLDEN B.C. TO SHIN-BOW AND CHOW TING RAH; HER FATHER ORGINALLY EMIGRATED TO CANADA TO WORK ON CANADIAN RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION AND LATER BECAME A RESTAURANTEUR, WHERE MYRA DEVELOPED HER ENGLISH SKILLS AS A WAITRESS. "IN 1906 MY DAD [HAROLD ING SR.] LEFT HONG KONG FOR VANCOUVER, HE COULDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH... HE'S GOT TO BE A WAITER, A BUSBOY... AND HE LEARNED ALL THE WAY UP, IN THE MEANTIME PICKING UP ENGLISH... HAROLD'S YOUNGER BROTHER, CALVIN, "GOT SENT TO A BOARDING SCHOOL SOMEWHERE. HE WAS GIFTED, BUT HE HAD A BYPASS SURGERY, HE HAD SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIS HEART. HE COULDN'T HANDLE PUBLIC SCHOOL, SO THEY SENT HIM TO B.C." AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND A BRIEF STINT IN CALGARY, HAROLD JR. RAN ING'S GROCERY FOR HIS FATHER, AND IN THE LATE 1960S AND EARLY 70S ALSO WORKED AS A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD AND A SALESMAN AT SEARS. BOTH HAROLD SR. AND MYRA ING PASSED AWAY IN THE 1990S, AND THE OBJECTS ENCOMPASSING DONATION P19950073001-231 WERE COLLECTED FROM THE FAMILY HOME. BOTTOM OF SKIRT HAS A STRAIGHT SOLID BAND AROUND IT. NECKLINE HAS A CROCHETED TRIM AROUND IT. BACK OF DRESS IS OPEN FROM NECKLINE TO HALFWAY DOWN SKIRT; THIS CLOSES WITH NUMEROUS HOOKS AND EYES. HAS 3/4 LENGTH SLEEVES MADE OF A SHEER BLACK FABRIC WITH BLACK VELVET DESIGNS ON IT. CUFFS ARE CUT IN A V-SHAPE, SO TOPSIDE IS LONGER THAN BOTTOM SIDE. CUFFS CLOSE WITH A SMALL, METAL SNAP. BACK OF DRESS HAS A SLIT FROM NECKLINE TO CENTER BACK; SLIT CLOSES AT NECKLINE WITH A PLASTIC, SILVER BUTTON SHAPED LIKE A FLOWER. BUTTON HAS A CLEAR GEM IN THE CENTER. DRESS HAS A LOOP OF THREAD ON EACH SIDE, THROUGH WHICH IS A BELT. BELT IS A STRIP OF BLACK POLYESTER?, WITH PEACH COLOURED ENDS. ONE END OF BELT IS FRAYED. DRESS HAS LOOSE THREADS THROUGHOUT. MEN'S FROCK COAT. BLACK WOOL. DOUBLE BREASTED; BUTTONS ARE STEEL, OVERLAID WITH BLACK THREAD IN A WEAVE PATTERN. IMPRESSED INTO BACK OF EACH BUTTON IS "CARANTIE * 32 * ". COAT HAS NOTCHED LAPELS, THAT END IN A V-SHAPE. COLLAR IS SLIGHTLY NARROWER THAN LAPELS. THERE ARE TWO BUTTON HOLES ON LAPEL, ONE OF WHICH IS SEWN UP. BELOW WAIST LINE JACKET IS SLIGHTLY FULLER. THERE ARE NO OUTSIDE POCKETS, BUT A WELT POCKET ON EACH INSIDE BREAST. INSIDE OF JACKET IS LINED WITH BLACK SILK, EXCEPT FOR SLEEVES WHICH ARE LINED WITH A WHITE AND BLACK STRIPED COTTON. LINING ON RIGHT ARM IS LOOSE, AND APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN REPAIRED. THERE ARE THREE SMALLER BUTTONS SAME AS ABOVE, ON EACH CUFF, WITH MOCK BUTTONHOLES. BACK OF JACKET, HAS A VENT, ABOVE WHICH ARE 2 BUTTONS (SAME AS ABOVE). EACH 'TAIL' OF VENT HAS A HIDDEN SLIT POCKET ON INSIDE.
