RUST COLOURED STOLE IS 2.5M LONG BAND OF WOVEN CLOTH WITH FLARED BELL SHAPED ENDS. EACH END HAS GOLD AND RUST COLOURED NYLON TASSELS. EACH END ALSO HAS EMBROIDERED CROSS WITH FLORAL CENTRES. CROSS IS GOLD WITH PURPLE EDGING. SMALLER EMBROIDERED CROSS IS ALSO AT BACK OF NECK IN MIDDLE OF STOLE. STOLE HAS GREY FABRIC BACKING.

BLACK ROBE OF THE OBLATES, NOT WORN SINCE VATICAN II (1962). OBLATES ACTIVE IN LETHBRIDGE AREA SINCE 1ST BAPTISM AT FORT HAMILTON BY FATHER SCOLLEN IN 1873. FATHER VAN TIGHEM CELEBRATED THE 1ST MASS IN 1884 IN COALBANKS. THEREAFTER ESTABLISHING A PARISH IN 1886 & BUILDING 1ST ST. PATRICKS CHURCH IN 1887 IN SEPTEMBER VAN TIGHEM MOVED TO NEW PARISH AS ITS PRIEST. THE OBLATE OF MARY IMMACULATE (OMI) HISTORICALLY SOMETIMES CALLED THE BLACKROBES BECAUSE OF THEIR CHARACTERISTIC BLACK ROBES. THE OBLATES ARE RETIRING FROM LETHBRIDGE IN JULY .1990. THIS ROBE WAS NORMALLY WORN WITH A CINCTURE OR BELT SNAP FASTENED AT THE WAIST WITH A LARGE CROSS (12.7 X 20.4) & HUNG BY A CORD FROM THE NECK.

HAND WOVEN, BURGUNDY BACKGROUND, 5 BLUE AND WHITE VERTICAL STRIPES. 5 VERTICAL ROWS OF WOOL EMBROIDERED FLOWERS, RED/WHITE, RED/YELLOW, GREEN LEAVES AND STEMS. ATTACHED TO GREY WAISTBAND WHICH BUTTON ON LEFT SIDE WITH AN AQUA BUTTON.

THE DONOR ESTIMATES THE COSTUME TO BE 150 YEARS OLD, IT WAS MADE BY HER ANCESTRAL MATERNAL GREAT-GRANDMOTHER (6 GENERATIONS BACK). THE COSTUME IS ENTIRELY HANDMADE AND EXEMPLIFIES FINE FOLK ART. THE ORNATELY DECORATED APRON IS CONSIDERED THE "HEART" OF LITHUANIA COSTUMES.
