DONOR JACK LEE WAS BORN IN VANCOUVER IN 1924. HE RELOCATED WITH HIS PARENTS TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1928. IN THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED LEE’S DISCHARGE FROM OVERSEAS SERVICE DURING WORLD WAR TWO, HE DECIDED AT AGE 23/24 TO JOIN THE LETHBRIDGE YMCA BECAUSE, ACCORDING TO LEE IN 2010, “I NEEDED EXERCISE, I HAD NO HOBBY, NO OUTLET”. “IT WAS THE ONLY OUTLET THAT HAD PHYSICAL ACTIVITY” HE SAID, ADDING THAT THE Y’S WEIGHT TRAINING PROGRAM WAS WHAT ORIGINALLY ATTRACTED HIM TO BECOMING INVOLVED AT THE ‘Y’. LEE MAINTAINED HIS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ‘Y’ “OFF AND ON FOR TWENTY YEARS”, PARTICIPATING IN CALISTHENICS, SWIMMING, BASKETBALL AND SCUBA DIVING LESSONS. INCREASING DEMANDS OF HIS TIME MADE BY THE LOCAL MILITIA ULTIMATELY LED TO HIS WITHDRAWAL FROM THE ‘Y’. THE JACKET, ACCORDING TO LEE, WAS NOT “OFFICIAL WEAR FOR THE SENIOR LEADER” NOR WAS THE JACKET’S CREST OFFICIAL. “AFTER I BECAME A GRADUATE LEADER, I WAS PROUD AND DECIDED TO GET A JACKET MADE.” ONCE IN POSSESSION OF THE JACKET, HOWEVER, HE FELT FOOLISH, SAYING, “I DIDN’T WEAR IT BECAUSE THE REST OF THE GROUP WOULD THINK I WAS A SHOW OFF – AND THAT’S WHY IT IS STILL BRAND NEW”. LEE ONLY WORE THE JACKET ONCE TO A NON-YMCA SOCIAL GATHERING. HE RECALLS THAT OF ALL THE SENIOR LEADERS, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE TO ACHIEVE GRADUATE LEADER STATUS STATING, HOWEVER, THAT FORMER MEMBERS LIKE BERT STRATTON HAD ACHIEVED THE TITLE PRECIOUS. THERE WAS NO PRIVILEGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TITLE “JUST THE PERSONAL SATISFACTION THAT I DID IT”. TO BE CONSIDERED ELIGIBLE TO BECOME A GRADUATE LEADER, LEE WAS REQUIRED TO SERVE AS A SENIOR LEADER FOR FOUR. THEREAFTER, HE QUALIFIED PER SET CRITERIA IN BASKETBALL – HIS SPORT OF CHOICE AND ONE OF MANY ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT THE ‘Y’. THE CRITERIA INCLUDED: PLAY IN AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE, REFEREE IN AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE, COACH A TEAM IN AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE, AND DEVELOP AN ORGANIZED LEAGUE. LEE STATED THAT HE COACHED A ‘Y’ WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUE, ORGANIZED A JUNIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE INCLUDING TEAMS FROM THE ‘Y’ AND LOCAL CHURCHES AND PLAYED ON A SENIOR ‘Y’ MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM. THE BLAZER JACKET, HE RECALLED, WAS BOUGHT LOCALLY AT STAN’S MEN’S WEAR. THE DONATED, OFFICIAL GRADUATE LEADER CREST WAS WORN DAY-TO-DAY ON ATHLETIC SHIRTS BY MEANS OF SNAPS ON CREST’S REVERSE. THE CREST, LEE THINKS, WAS SENT DOWN EAST TO AN APPAREL COMPANY IN ORDER THAT AN UNOFFICIAL, BLAZER-APPROPRIATE FACSIMILE COULD BE MOUNTED ON HIS JACKET. JACKET AND TIE WERE WORN BY LOCAL RESIDENT AND FORMER MINERS’ LIBRARY CLUB PRESIDENT ROBERT “BOBBIE” BROWN FROM APPROXIMATELY 1986 TO 1995. BOBBIE BROWN WAS ATTRACTED TO THE CLUB AS A 17 YEAR OLD ADOLESCENT AROUND 1948, BUT ACCORDING TO HIS WIFE MARLA BROWN, HE WAS TOO YOUNG TO DRINK AND CONSEQUENTLY WAS “ONLY ALLOWED TO GO DOWN INTO THE BASEMENT, WHERE HE MET FRIENDS AND PLAYED CARDS”. BY THEN, HIS FATHER JACK “JOHN” BROWN AND BROTHERS JIM AND ANDREW “BUCK” WERE ALL DEDICATED MEMBERS OF THE MINERS. MARLA FELT THAT HER HUSBAND’S DEVOTION TO THE CLUB AND ATTENDANCE AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE REFLECTED HIS COMMITMENT TO HIS FAMILY AND THE PLEASURE HE GOT FROM BEING AROUND HIS BROTHERS AND FATHER. ON 18 AUGUST 1950, BOBBIE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY, SERVING IN KOREA AS A SAPPER WITH ENGINEERS. HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED ON AUGUST 6, 1952 AND RETURNED HOME TO LETHBRIDGE. ONCE BACK, BOBBIE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO BE UPSTAIRS IN THE MINERS. IN JUNE 2010, HE RECALLED THAT THERE WERE NO WOMEN ALLOWED IN THE CLUB AND THAT A DRAFT BEER WAS 10 CENTS A GLASS. NO HARD LIQUOR WAS ALLOWED TO BE SERVED IN THE CLUB AT THE TIME. IF WOMEN WERE FINALLY ALLOWED TO VISIT THE CLUB, THEY WERE REQUIRED TO PATRONIZE A “SEPARATE SIDE” OF THE BAR. ACCORDING TO BOBBIE, “THE LIBRARY WAS VERY SPORTS-ORIENTED”. IT DONATED FUNDS TO MANY CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS AND ACCORDING TO MARLA, “BUILT QUITE A FEW PARKS IN LETHBRIDGE”. BOBBIE’S DEDICATION TO THE CLUB AND HIS APPRECIATION OF THE CLUB’S IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY, LED HIM TO SERVE AS BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN 1986. AFTER A 3 YEAR TERM AS DIRECTOR, HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT, WHICH HE OCCUPIED UNTIL 1995. FOR HIS SERVICE, HE WAS AWARDED A LIFE MEMBERSHIP. IN 1995, HE DECIDED TO TRANSFER HIS ENERGIES TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION NO. 4 BRANCH AND ITS EXECUTIVE, A DECISION MADE FOLLOWING A SECOND, BUT UNSUCCESSFUL BID FOR THE MINERS’ PRESIDENCY. BOBBY WAS EQUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT HIS SERVICE WITH THE LEGION, BUT ULTIMATELY HIS HEART REMAINED WITH THE MINERS WHICH CLOSED IN 2003. IN BOBBIE’S OPINION, THE CAMARADERIE IN THE MINERS WAS WITHOUT EQUAL. THE CLUB BLAZER WITH CREST WAS WORN BY BOBBIE TO EVERY BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING AND TO FUNCTIONS INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, CHEQUE PRESENTATION AND SPONSORED SPORTING EVENTS (AKA. SPORTS HALL OF FAME). HE OWNED NO BLAZER BUT THIS ONE PROVIDED TO HIM WITHOUT CHARGE BY THE CLUB IN 1986. BOBBIE’S FONDEST MEMORIES OF TIME SPENT AT THE MINERS INCLUDE HIS DAILY VISITS TO THE MINERS FOR BEER FOLLOWING THE COMPLETION OF HIS WORK DAY AS A CARRIER WITH CANADA POST. FROM EARLY AFTERNOON UNTIL 4:00 HE SHARED TIME WITH FRIENDS CORRIDO SANTONI AND WORK COLLEAGUES BILL HARCUZ AND ANDY PONECH – EACH ONE VOLUNTEERING IN SUCCESSION TO PAY FOR THE NEXT DAY’S ROUNDS. THE CHOIR WENT TO THE UNITED KINGDOM THAT YEAR TO COMPETE AT THE TEESIDE INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND AND THE LLANGOLLEN INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL EISTEDDFOD IN WALES. UNTIL THE EARLY 1990S THE CHOIR CONTINUED TO TRAVEL THROUGHOUT CANADA AND OVERSEAS, AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPETE IN MANY MUSIC FESTIVALS. THE UNITED KINGDOM, DENMARK, BELGIUM, AUSTRIA AND JAPAN WERE AMONG THE COUNTRIES VISITED BY THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS. IS SEMI-CIRCLE SHAPED WITH THE OUTSIDE BEING EDGED WITH 5 VELVET STRIPS. OUTSIDE IS TRIMMED WITH SCALLOPED LACE. AROUND COLLAR LACE IS ON CAPE AND IS EDGED WITH ONE BLACK VELVET STRIP. ENDS OF LACE ARE EMBROIDERED. EMBROIDERY IS WEARING OFF, LACE IS TORN AND WORN. NUMEROUS THREADS ARE LOOSE. 2. SCARF: 91CM (W) X 205CM (L). BLACK SILK(?) SCARF IS TRIANGULAR IN SHAPE WITH ONE END BEING ROUNDED. IS TRIMMED WITH BRAIDED GROUPS OF NYLON THREADS. GROUPS OF THREADS ARE WOVEN AND TERRACED PART WAY DOWN, THEN THEY ARE TIED OFF AND HANG IN LOOSE TASSELS OF THREADS. IN ROUNDED CORNER IS FLORAL AND LEAF COUCHED EMBROIDERY. HAS SMALL LINE OF SWIRL PATTERN ALONG OPPOSITE EDGE. IS BLACK METAL HOOK ALONG TOP OF THE LONG EDGE. TASSELS ARE MISSING IN MOST PLACES, ARE LOOSE AND TEARING WHERE THEY ARE STILL ATTACHED. THIS COSTUME WAS WORN BY WIM VONKEMAN DURING HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES OF THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB OF LETHBRIDGE. BORN IN THE NETHERLANDS IN 1929, VONKEMAN IMMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1981 WITH HIS WIFE TRUDY AND THEIR THREE CHILDREN, ANINE, ALWIN, AND HERWIN, SETTLING IN THE PICTURE BUTTE AREA. VONKEMAN WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB, AND WAS ACTIVE WITH THE GROUP UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 2004. ON JANUARY 21, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, TRUDY VONKEMAN, ABOUT THIS COSTUME AND HER HUSBAND WIM’S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB OF LETHBRIDGE. SHE SAID: “MY HUSBAND’S FAMILY WENT [TO CANADA] IN 1952 – HE WAS THE ELDEST SON AND HAD A NICE JOB IN HOLLAND SO HE STAYED BEHIND. THEN WE MET AND MARRIED AND HAD KIDS, AND IN 1979 WE WENT ON HOLIDAYS [IN CANADA] WITH THE KIDS FOR FOUR WEEKS… THEY ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH AND WHEN WE WERE BACK IN HOLLAND I HEARD MY TWO SONS [SAYING] ‘AFTER SCHOOL WE GO TO CANADA’… I SAID TO MY HUSBAND, ‘LET’S GO THEN AS A FAMILY, I DON’T WENT TO SPLIT THE FAMILY LATER’… THERE WAS A BIG FAMILY WAITING [IN CANADA] AND MY PARENTS DIED [IN 1979 AND 1980] SO THERE WAS NO REASON NOT TO DO IT [WHILE] WE WERE STILL YOUNG ENOUGH. I WAS 47 AND MY HUSBAND WAS 51, BUT STILL WE MADE IT. THE WHOLE FAMILY LOOKED AFTER US [AND] THERE WAS A JOB ON THE FARM [OUTSIDE PICTURE BUTTE]... WE DIDN’T NEED TO IMMIGRATE BECAUSE IT WAS EVEN BETTER IN HOLLAND THAN WHEN WE CAME HERE. STILL, ONE OF THE LAST THINGS MY HUSBAND SAID TO ME [WAS] ‘WE HAD LESS MONEY HERE IN CANADA BUT I’M GLAD WE WENT.’” VONKEMAN CONTINUED: “IN HOLLAND, THE CHURCH WHERE I BELONGED TO, THE WOMEN WERE PASTORS. HERE, NOT. AND I STOPPED GOING WHEN… THERE WAS SOMETHING THE MEN HAD TO DECIDE AND THE WOMEN COULD [ONLY] GO TO THE KITCHEN AND MAKE COFFEE. I WAS SO MAD [I DECIDED] I’M NOT GOING ANYMORE… [BUT WIM], HIS BACKGROUND, WE DUTCH PEOPLE DO SOMETHING TOGETHER… HE WANTED TO BE ACTIVE TO SHOW SOMETHING ABOUT WHERE HE COMES FROM… HE MET SOME OTHER DUTCH PEOPLE [AND] SET UP THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB… HE STARTED WITH DICK VAN GROOTHEEST AND HERMAN SIEMENS AND HE TOOK THE INITIATIVE… HE WANTED TO ORGANIZE AND DO STUFF. HE WAS NOT ONE TO SIT AROUND AND READ A BOOK… HE WAS ALWAYS BUSY AND TRYING TO FIND NEW THINGS [FOR THE CLUB] TO DO… I WAS IN THE BACKGROUND, HELPING WITH THE ORGANIZING AND HELPING HIM THINK ABOUT THINGS… WIM STARTED [THE CLUB’S] MAGAZINE, ‘VAN DE HAK OP DE TAK’ [ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO ‘DOWN THE GRAPE VINE’]… THE CLUB HAD A FOLK DANCE GROUP AND THEY HAD THIS SUIT FOR IT. [THE DESIGN] IS FROM A CERTAIN PART OF HOLLAND [CALLED] VOLENDAM… A LITTLE FISHER TOWN WHERE ALL THE MEN WORE THIS IN THE PAST… [THE CLUB’S DANCE GROUP] WENT AROUND AND DANCED IN OLD FOLKS HOMES… AND THEY HAD A CHOIR TOO, ALL DRESSED UP IN VOLENDAM COSTUMES, SINGING ON DIFFERENT EVENINGS… YOU HAVE EVENINGS WHERE YOU DANCE AND YOU HAVE A MEAL, AND DRINK A GLASS OF WINE, AND HAVE FUN.” ON JUNE 24, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED WIM VONKEMAN’S DAUGHTER, ANINE. SHE SAID: “AFTER MY DAD PASSED AWAY, WE HAD [THE COSTUME] DRY-CLEANED… AND I COULDN’T GET RID OF IT. IT HAD TO GO BACK TO THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB, TO THE DANCERS, SO THAT SOMEONE ELSE COULD WEAR IT. MY DAD WAS PRETTY SHORT, AND IT WAS A SPECIFIC SIZE FOR HIM [AND] IT WAS PART OF HIM, SO I JUST COULDN’T GET RID OF IT… WHEN I KEPT IT, I KNEW THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO KEEP IT MYSELF FOREVER, AND THAT IT SHOULD GO INTO THE MUSEUM… BECAUSE MY DAD HELPED ESTABLISH THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB… IT SUCH A BIG PART OF THE WHOLE LETHBRIDGE STORY… HE SET UP THE ASSOCIATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER PEOPLE, IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN A CONNECTION BETWEEN DUTCH CANADIANS, AND KEEP SOME TRADITIONS GOING, OR BRING SOME NEW TALENTS. AND HE DID A LOT OF STUFF CROSS-CULTURALLY WITH CANADIANS AND DUTCH PEOPLE, BRINGING CHOIRS AND DANCERS OVER FROM HOLLAND, DOING STUFF IN THE STATES WITH OTHER DUTCH ASSOCIATIONS, AND JUST TRYING TO CONNECT PEOPLE… THERE ARE MANY RURAL DUTCH-CANADIANS – FARMERS, FARMERS’ FAMILIES – BUT THERE’S ALSO LOTS OF PEOPLE IN LETHBRIDGE AND SMALLER COMMUNITIES. BUT THEY ASSOCIATE THROUGH CHURCHES, I THINK… AND MY MOM AND DAD LEFT THE CHURCH [SO] THAT COMMUNITY, FOR THEM, WAS NOT THERE. DRESS ENSEMBLE BELONGED TO DONOR'S MOTHER, LOIS NAKAYAMA, POSSIBLY BROUGHT TO ALBERTA FROM VANCOUVER. THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WAS ORIGINALLY FROM VANCOUVER BUT MOVED TO COALDALE FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN THEY WERE INTERNED AT SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. FROM AUGUST 29 TO 31, 2011 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, JOY KOGAWA, ABOUT HER MEMORIES ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC OBJECTS THAT SHE DONATED IN 1997. OF HER MOTHER'S CLOTHES, KOGAWA SAID: “ SHE SO MUCH LIKED CLOTHES,,, AND SHE HAD BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES, [BUT] SHE DIDN’T HAVE A LOT… SHE HAD ONE PAIR OF SHOES, WHICH SHE KEPT REPAIRING AND REPAIRING… [HER CLOTHING] BRINGS BACK A SADNESS FOR MY MOTHER, BECAUSE HER LIFE WAS SO HARD… TO GO FROM WHAT THEY HAD IN VANCOUVER, ALL THE DREAMS THAT THEY HAD THERE, INTO SOUTHERN ALBERTA, WHERE IT WAS SO HARSH… THAT WAS NOT A WAY TO BE TREATED IN THAT STAGE OF LIFE… MY MOTHER WAS A VERY SILENT WOMAN AND DID NOT COMPLAIN… I THINK SHE GAVE UP ON BEING PART OF THE WORLD, AND RETREATED FROM IT. AS LONG AS SHE HAD KIDS, SHE HAD TO BE IN THE WORLD, BUT I THINK THAT, BY INCLINATION, SHE WOULD HAVE JUST LEFT IT – IT WAS JUST TOO HARD FOR HER… I JUST WISH SO MUCH THAT I HAD KNOWN HER THEN THE WAY I KNOW HER NOW… I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE MADE HER HAPPY, BECAUSE SHE NEVER WAS… BUT IN SOME WAYS I THINK HER LIFE ENDED HAPPILY. REFLECTIVE HARNESS MADE FROM ELASTIC, NEON YELLOW MATERIAL. THERE IS SILVER, REFLECTIVE COATING DOWN THE CENTER OF THE WHOLE HARNESS. THE HARNESS IS SUSPENDER STYLE AND CROSSES AT THE BACK. THERE IS A BLACK PLASTIC BUCKLE AT THE FRONT CENTER OF THE WAIST AND 4 BLACK PLASTIC STRAP ADJUSTORS ON EACH STRAP (ONE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE WAIST). THE TAG IS PLACED WHERE THE TWO SHOULDER STRAPS CROSS AND READS “NORTH… LOT 113485 APR/13/2006”. SIDE STRAPS ARE EACH APPROXIMATELY 122 CM IN LENGTH AND 3.7 CM IN WIDTH. THE WAIST BAND IS THE SAME WIDTH AND 111.5 IN LENGTH. GOOD CONDITION: MINOR WEAR/LOSS OF THE SILVER REFLECTIVE COATING. THERE IS SLIGHT STAINING OVERALL WITH A LARGE, RED STAIN ON THE INSIDE OF THE RIGHT STRAP (ON PERSON) OF THE HARNESS. THERE ARE LOOSE THREADS ON MANY PLACES OF THE SEAMS.

THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT BEGAN IN 1975 WHEN THE KIWANIS CLUB DONATED THE FIRST VAN. ON AUGUST 1, 2007 – AFTER 32 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY – THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE. AT THAT POINT, THE ASSOCIATION HAD A FLEET OF 20 BUSES – MANY OF WHICH WERE DONATED BY LOCAL SERVICE CLUBS – THAT WERE ALL TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY. THE NAME OF THE SERVICE BECAME ACCESS-A-RIDE UNDER THE CITY’S MANAGEMENT. THESE ARTIFACTS WERE DONATED BY A LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBER, LYNN SPRING. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON APRIL 12, 2016 WITH SPRING. HE EXPLAINS, “I WAS A MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR HALF A DOZEN YEARS AT LEAST AND SOME OF THESE ITEMS WERE GIVEN TO ME BY THE DRIVERS. THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STARTED IN 1975 AND ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO, LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STOPPED THEIR CHARTER AS A NOT- FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION BECAUSE OF THE NATIONAL RULING IN TRANSPORTATION THAT MUNICIPALITIES WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCESSIBILITY RIDES, HANDICAP TRANSPORTATION. SO THE CITY TOOK OVER ALL OF THE BUSES, THEY PURCHASED THEM AND MOST OF THE DRIVERS WENT OVER TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE BECAUSE WE HAD, I BELIEVE, TWENTY-SIX AT THAT TIME AND YOU JUST DON’T JUST DON’T FIND TWENTY-SIX DRIVERS. THAT WAS PART OF THE AGREEMENT ON SALE THAT THEY WOULD TAKE THE BUSES. WE TOOK OUR PLATES OFF AND THE NEXT DAY CITY PUT THEIR PLATES ON AND THEIR INSURANCE. THE DRIVERS WENT OVER EVENTUALLY. THEY WERE WEARING THE CITY TRANSIT, LETHBRIDGE CITY TRANSIT UNIFORMS.” OF HIS TIME AS A BOARD MEMBER, SPRING SAID, “I CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN [2005]… THE MANAGER OF THE DAY, MURRAY CAMPBELL, WAS A LONGTIME FRIEND OF MINE AND HE ASKED ME [TO BE ON THE BOARD], AND I THOUGHT WELL IT IS A VERY WORTHWHILE ORGANIZATION. IT WAS A NOT-FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND DIDN’T INVOLVE A LOT OF HOURS.” SPRING WAS ON THE BOARD UNTIL 2011. SPRING REFERRED TO HIMSELF AS “A COLLECTOR AT HEART” AND AS A RESULT GATHERED THE DONATED ARTIFACTS DURING THE LAST DAYS OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION IN 2011. THEY WERE IN HIS POSSESSION FOR 5 TO 7 YEARS. HE EXPLAINS, “WELL I WAS ONE OF THREE THAT CLOSED DOWN AND CLOSED OUT HANDI BUS. WE HAD TO FILE WITH TAX CANADA AND OF COURSE, WORKERS COMP AND ALL THOSE THINGS SO FINALLY WE’RE AT THAT STAGE WHERE WE CAN GET RID OF A LOT OF THE PAPER RECORDS. IT PROMPTED THAT I SHOULD MAYBE DONATE THESE TO THE GALT MUSEUM FOR PROSPERITY… [T]HAT’S JUST MY NATURE, I GUESS, TO RETAIN THINGS AND SAY ‘WELL SOMEBODY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THIS IN A FUTURE DATE.’” THE SAFETY VEST WOULD HAVE BEEN WORN BY THE BUS DRIVERS. “[THE] SAFETY VESTS I HAVE ARE A VERY OLD STYLE WHICH PRE-DATES THE BIB STYLE WITH THE FULL COLOUR… THAT’S JUST FOR SAFETY WHEN [THE DRIVER] GETS OFF THE BUS BECAUSE THEY HAD TO LOAD AND UNLOAD, ASSIST A LOT OF THE PASSENGERS. IT’S NOT LIKE YOUR OTHER TRANSIT WHERE THE DRIVER STAYS IN THE SEAT, PEOPLE ARE AMBULATORY AND GET OFF AND ON. A HANDI BUS DRIVER HAS A LOT MORE WORK TO DO IN THAT HE UNLOADS, HE HAS TO LOWER THE RAMP, LOCK DOWN THE WHEELCHAIR, HAS TO MAKE SURE IT’S A CERTAIN REVERSE DIRECTION SO THE WEIGHT DISPLACEMENT COMES UP. THE CUFFS AND FRONT CLOSURE EACH HAVE TWO GOLD BUTTONS WITH THE SAME LEGION EMBLEM EMBOSSED ON THEM.

BELONGED TO ART TURNER, WHO SERVED OVER THIRTY YEARS IN THE CANADIAN ARMY. TURNER ENLISTED IN CALGARY IN 1934, SERVING OVERSEAS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WITH THE 2ND ANTI-TANK REGIMENT FROM LETHBRIDGE. HE REMAINED IN GERMANY WITH THE ARMY OF OCCUPATION FOR TWO YEARS AFTER THE WAR, RETIRING FROM SERVICE IN 1966. TURNER JOINED THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION IN 1960 AND, SHORTLY BEFORE HIS DEATH IN 1998, WAS AWARDED A LIFE MEMBERSHIP IN THE GENERAL STEWART BRANCH #4. DURING THE WAR YEARS SHE JOINED THE CIVIL DEFENCE AND STUDIED FIRST AID, AMBULANCE WORK, AND GAS WARFARE, VOLUNTARY WORK WHICH EARNED HER A MEDAL. IN 1959 SHE MOVED TO CANADA AND MARRIED ANDY DUNIPACE. THEY RESIDED IN CHAMPTION UNTIL HIS PASSING IN 1977. IN 1978 SHE MARRIED ART TURNER AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE.” ROSA PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 91 ON AUGUST 11, 2002. ARTHUR “ART” A. TURNER C.D. WAS BORN IN BOURNVILLE, ENGLAND AND MOVED TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 15. HE SERVED IN THE CANADIAN ARMY FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS, INCLUDING OVERSEAS SERVICE DURING WWII IN FRANCE, BELGIUM, HOLLAND, AND GERMANY. HE WAS TWICE WOUNDED, INCLUDING THE LOSS OF HIS HEARING FROM BOMBINGS. HE ALSO SERVED IN GERMANY FOR TWO YEARS WITH THE ARMY OF OCCUPATION FOLLOWING THE WAR. UPON HIS RETURN TO CANADA, HE TRAINED MILITA AND ARMY CADETS THROUGHOUT MANITOBA, SASKATCHEWAN, ALBERTA, AND BRITISH COLUMBIA.
