DONOR RELATES THAT THIS NIGHTGOWN AND MATCHING BATHROBE WERE GIVEN TO HER BY BEN FIBER, A TORONTO JOURNALIST. THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WAS ORIGINALLY FROM VANCOUVER BUT MOVED TO COALDALE FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN THEY WERE INTERNED AT SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. WHITE, STARCHED. FRONT OF BIB IS A RECTANGULAR PANEL MEASURING 34.5 X 16.0-30.8 CM. THE TOP OF THE PANEL HAS A ROUNDED NECK, SEPARATING INTO TWO LONG ARMS (65,0 CM). THESE ARMS ARE PROBABLY DESIGNED TO TUCK UNDER THE WAISTBAND OF THE SKIRT. ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BID FRONT IS WRITTEN IN PEN "248" AND ANOTHER SERIES OF NUMBERS (BOTH HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED OUT). "721" IS WRITTEN VISIBLY.

BIB BELONGED TO BETTE J. BAILIE (NEE DAY). SHE TRAINED AS A NURSE AT THE GALT HOSPITAL FROM 1960-1962. BETTE MARRIED LAWRENCE IN 1962. SHE WORKED AT THE GENERAL HOSPITAL IN CALGARY (1962-1964). HER CAREER ENDED IN 1965 UPON MOVING TO STETTLER, ALBERTA. DURING HER CAREER, BETTE WON AN AWARD FOR PEDIATRICS. HER FAMILY CAME TO SOUTHERN ALBERTA IN 1909 TO FARM. BETTE WAS FROM FORT MACLEOD, ALBERTA. SHE PASSED AWAY JANUARY, 1998. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT RUTHANN LABLANCE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF CLOTHING, INCLUDING A NURSING UNIFORM DONATED BY LAWRENCE BAILIE. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. BETTE J. BAILIE (NEE DAY) WAS THE DAUGHTER OF BUD AND INGA (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN) DAY. SHE RECEIVED HER PRIMARY EDUCATION IN FORT MACLEOD AND GRADUATED FROM THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING IN 1962. ON SEPTEMBER 22, 1962, BETTE WAS MARRIED TO LAWRENCE BAILIE. THE COUPLE LIVED IN CALGARY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, WHERE BETTE WORKED AT THE CALGARY GENERAL HOSPITAL. THEY THEN MOVED TO STETTLER FOR 10 YEARS BEFORE RETURNING TO LETHBRIDGE. BETTE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 57 ON JANUARY 13, 1998. *UPDATE* IN 2017, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILE ARTIFACTS, INCLUDING THIS NURSING OUTFIT WORN BY BETTE BAILIE. ON 24 NOVEMBER 2017 PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DONOR, LAWRENCE BAILIE, WHO WAS MARRIED TO BETTE. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM THAT INTERVIEW: LAWRENCE BAILIE EXPLAINS HE DONATED THIS OUTFIT BECAUSE, “MY LATE WIFE HAD SAVED THIS FROM HER DAYS OF TRAINING AT THE LETHBRIDGE GALT HOSPITAL. AND SHE, OH I THINK SHE STARTED IN 1960 AND GRADUATED IN 1962… I THINK FOR YEARS WE HAD IT IN A SUITCASE OR TRUNK JUST ‘CAUSE IT WAS – ACTUALLY HER WHOLE IDEA WAS, I THINK, THAT SHE WANTED TO SHOW HER GRANDDAUGHTER THIS AS PART OF HER LIFE, I GUESS IS WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT HOW HIS WIFE FIRST ACQUIRED THE NURSING OUTFIT, BAILIE REPLIED, “THEY DIDN’T START OUT WITH THIS TYPE OF UNIFORM BECAUSE THEY STARTED OUT WITH A DIFFERENT TYPE WHEN THEY WERE IN THEIR FIRST YEAR AND I THINK THEY CALLED THEM ‘PEROGIES,’ AND THEN AFTER THE FIRST YEAR IS WHEN THEY GOT THEIR UNIFORMS AND THEY WORE THEM ALL THE TIME… I WOULD SAY [THIS TYPE OF UNIFORM WAS WORN] FROM THE FIRST YEAR [TO THE] END OF THE SECOND YEAR WHILE THEY WERE WORKING AND THIS SORT OF PUT THEM APART FROM OTHER NURSES IN THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE THEY HAD THIS TYPE OF UNIFORM ON... NOW ONCE THEY GRADUATED THEY DIDN’T HAVE THIS UNIFORM ANYMORE, THEY ACTUALLY HAD WHAT YOU WOULD BUY, LIKE A COMMERCIALLY-MADE NURSE’S DRESS… THEY WERE WHITE AND YOU COULD BUY DIFFERENT DESIGNS OF THEM. THEY HAD TO GO TO A SPECIAL PLACE TO BUY THE NURSE’S UNIFORMS THAT THEY WORE ONCE THEY WERE WORKING.” BAILIE CONTINUED, “AFTER SHE GRADUATED AND WE WERE MARRIED… SHE WORKED IN CALGARY AT THE GENERAL HOSPITAL, AND NURSES WERE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR THE SAME CLOTHES WHILE THEY WERE NURSING – THEIR STREET CLOTHES – THEY HAD TO HAVE CLEAN CLOTHES IN THE LOCKERS THAT THEY HAD TO PUT ON SO THEY COULDN’T BRING, SUPPOSEDLY, GERMS INTO THE HOSPITAL. SO THEIR SHOES, EVERYTHING HAD TO BE CHANGED ... [SO] SHE HAD TO BRING HER UNIFORMS [TO THE HOSPITAL]. THEY HAD TO BE WASHED AND CLEANED, SO SHE HAD TO WASH, CLEAN THEM, AND TAKE THEM BACK AND FORTH, AND PUT THEM IN HER LOCKER AND WHATEVER.” WHEN ASKED WHY HIS WIFE BECAME A NURSE, BAILIE EXPLAINED, “MY WIFE USED TO ALWAYS SAY, “WELL I DIDN’T HAVE MUCH CHOICE IN THOSE DAYS BECAUSE” SHE SAID, ‘I EITHER HAD TO BE A SCHOOLTEACHER OR NURSE.’ AND SHE SAID, ‘I DIDN’T WANT TO BE A SCHOOL TEACHER.’ AND SHE KNEW THAT, WELL HER MOTHER WAS, MAKE SURE THAT SHE BECAME SOMETHING. SHE HAD TO. LIKE HER MOM SAID, ‘YOU’LL STAY THERE FOREVER. YOU HAVE TO GRADUATE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, WHATEVER.’ SO SHE DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE.” THE WAY THAT LAWRENCE AND BETTE MET WAS THROUGH A FUNDRAISING DANCE FOR THE NURSING ALUMNI. BAILIE SHARED THE STORY: “I THINK THE PROCEEDS FROM TWO DANCES A YEAR TO GO TO THEIR ALUMNI OR WHATEVER THEY HAD [THROUGH THE NURSING SCHOOL]. AND SO THEN, THEY HAD THESE DANCES AT THE PAVILION, AT THE HENDERSON LAKE PAVILION, AND SO ONE OF THE DANCES THE GALT SCHOOL WAS PUTTING ON. I MET HER THERE AT ONE OF THE DANCES…I COULD TELL YOU ALL KINDS OF – IT WAS KIND OF CUTE, IN THE SENSE THAT, I ASKED IF I COULD TAKE HER HOME AND SHE SAID, ‘WELL ONLY IF I COULD BRING MY FRIEND.’ AND I SAID, “NO, NOT A PROBLEM.” SO THEN SHE SAID – AND I SAID, “HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET HOME OTHERWISE?” AND SHE SAID, “WELL WE, WE HAD,” I DON’T KNOW, LET’S SAY, A COUPLE OF DOLLARS IN HER SHOE, SO SHE COULD GET A TAXI BACK TO THIS THING, AND IF, YOU KNOW, SO. AND SHE THOUGHT THAT MAYBE I WAS SAFE ENOUGH TO RIDE HOME WITH SO, AND ANYWAYS I TOOK HER HOME FROM THE DANCE AND THAT’S HOW WE STARTED OUR COURTSHIP OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO SAY FROM THAT TIME. I CALLED HER UP LATER… I LIVED WAY OUT IN SKIFF AND WE HAD A LOCAL PAY DIAL OR PAY PHONE THERE, SO WHEN I USED TO GO IN TO PHONE HER AND ASK HER FOR A DATE WHEN EVERYBODY IN THE STORE WOULD HEAR WHAT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT. SO YOU COULDN’T SAY VERY MUCH PERSONAL ‘CAUSE EVERYBODY WOULD HEAR.” BAILIE WENT ON TO SAY, “MY WIFE CONSIDERED HER TRAINING AND LIVING IN RESIDENCE WITH THESE OTHER GIRLS THE BEST TIME OF HER LIFE. SHE HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME WITH THE OTHER GIRLS AND SHE REALLY CHERISHED THAT AND SHE HAD SOME VERY, VERY DEAR FRIENDS. I DON’T THINK MOST PEOPLE DON’T HAVE A CHANCE TO HAVE THAT CLOSE OF FRIENDS, BECAUSE THEY LIVED THERE, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FOR TWO YEARS AND THEY FOUND A NUMBER OF THEM UP AND DOWN THE HALLS AND THEY DID LITTLE TRICKS WITH EACH OTHER, AND WENT OUT FOR COFFEE WITH EACH OTHER…THEY DID A LOT OF THINGS TOGETHER SO THEY BECAME VERY, VERY GOOD FRIENDS.” BAILIE BROUGHT A SCRAPBOOK TO THE MUSEUM ON THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW THAT BETTE HAD PUT TOGETHER FROM HER NURSING DAYS, WHICH INCLUDED INFORMATION ABOUT HER GRADUATION. SHE RECEIVED THE “EMILY HICK MEMORIAL AWARD FOR PROFICIENCY IN PEDIATRICS.” BAILIE EXPLAINS THAT WORKING IN PEDIATRICS WAS “HER LIFE. THAT’S WHAT SHE LOVED.” UPON GRADUATION, BETTE MARRIED LAWRENCE AND BEGAN NURSING IN CALGARY – WORKING ON THE PEDIATRIC WARD – WHILE LAWRENCE HAD WORKED FOR A TELEPHONE COMPANY. HE EXPLAINS, “BEING A FARM BOY, WELL I DIDN’T LIKE CALGARY, AND SO I WANTED TO GO TO A SMALLER PLACE, SO AT THAT TIME WE COULD BID OUT, SO I WENT TO STETTLER, SO NATURALLY SHE MOVED WITH ME TO STETTLER AND SHE DIDN’T WANT TO GET A JOB…SHE DIDN’T WANT TO BE A NURSE THEN, ‘CAUSE THE TYPE OF PERSON SHE WAS THAT, AND SHE LOVED THE KIDS AND EVERYTHING, BUT WHEN THERE WAS A COUPLE OF TIMES WHEN SHE WAS IN CALGARY WHERE SHE WOULD BE ON HEAD NURSE OR SOMETHING, AND SOME KIDS WOULD COME IN IN VERY SERIOUS CONDITION. AND SHE HAD TO [DECIDE] A LOT OF SERIOUS THINGS TO SEE WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO WITH THE CHILD. AND THAT REALLY BOTHERED HER… SHE TOOK HER WORK HOME [WITH HER]... SO SHE RETIRED AND RAISED OUR FAMILY.” WHILE BETTE RETIRED FROM NURSING, SHE CONTINUED TO USE HER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE FROM NURSING SCHOOL THROUGHOUT THE BAILIE’S FAMILY LIFE. BAILIE REMEMBERS, “BEING THAT IN HER TRAINING, THEY LEARNED ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU SHOULD EAT AND WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T EAT AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS OR WHATEVER, SO WE ATE VERY HEALTHY…THE NATURAL THINGS THAT SHE LEARNED WHEN SHE WAS TRAINING TO BE A NURSE. SHE TOOK THEM, SHE KEPT THEM WITH HER AND SHE WAS RAISING HER FAMILY WITH THE STUFF THAT SHE HAD LEARNED, YOU KNOW. AND THEN, NATURALLY, ONE OF OUR KIDS FELL AND HURT HIMSELF OR DID SOMETHING AND SHE’D DO THAT DOCTOR/NURSING THING – ‘CAN YOU MOVE THIS? SO YOU ARM’S NOT BROKEN?’ OR SHE WOULD BANDAGE OR WHATEVER. AND SHE SAID, ‘YOU’LL LIVE.’ YOU KNOW, I REMEMBER STILL. THAT WAS ONE OF HER FAVOURITE THINGS. YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE KIDS WOULD GET HURT OR SOMETHING AND SHE’D SAY, ‘THEY’LL BE OKAY. THEY’LL LIVE.’” THE BAILIE’S SONS ARE NAMED NEIL AND ROBERT (BOB). BETTE PASSED AWAY AFTER A SECOND BATTLE WITH CANCER, BAILIE EXPLAINS, “AS FAR AS CANCER TAKING HER AT A YOUNG AGE WAS – DOESN’T MAKE A LOT OF SENSE TO A LOT OF PEOPLE, I GUESS. BUT SHE WAS A VERY HEALTHY-LIVING PERSON. LIKE SHE NEVER SMOKED, SHE NEVER DRANK, AND IT DIDN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE WHEN IT COME TO THE CANCER. YOU KNOW. AND SHE DID LOOK AFTER HERSELF… PRIOR TO HER GETTING, FINDING OUT SHE HAD CANCER THE SECOND TIME, SHE TRAINED WITH A GIRL NEXT DOOR FOR THE IRON MAN.” BAILIE ALSO SAID, “I COULD TALK FOREVER ON HER, ABOUT HER. SHE WAS A GREAT GIRL... SHE HAD A GREAT PERSONALITY. VERY QUIET, SHE WAS QUIET BUT YEAH. BUT AGAIN, LIKE I SAY, I DON’T KNOW. LIKE THIS STUFF WE’VE KEPT, LIKE I’VE GOT THIS STUFF NOW. AND I DON’T KNOW. LIKE I’VE GOT TONS OF STUFF THAT BELONGS TO HER AND I JUST DON’T WANT TO GIVE IT UP. BUT IF I GIVE IT TO MY SON, I DON’T KNOW WHAT HE’LL DO WITH IT. JACKET AND TIE WERE WORN BY LOCAL RESIDENT AND FORMER MINERS’ LIBRARY CLUB PRESIDENT ROBERT “BOBBIE” BROWN FROM APPROXIMATELY 1986 TO 1995. BOBBIE BROWN WAS ATTRACTED TO THE CLUB AS A 17 YEAR OLD ADOLESCENT AROUND 1948, BUT ACCORDING TO HIS WIFE MARLA BROWN, HE WAS TOO YOUNG TO DRINK AND CONSEQUENTLY WAS “ONLY ALLOWED TO GO DOWN INTO THE BASEMENT, WHERE HE MET FRIENDS AND PLAYED CARDS”. BY THEN, HIS FATHER JACK “JOHN” BROWN AND BROTHERS JIM AND ANDREW “BUCK” WERE ALL DEDICATED MEMBERS OF THE MINERS. MARLA FELT THAT HER HUSBAND’S DEVOTION TO THE CLUB AND ATTENDANCE AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE REFLECTED HIS COMMITMENT TO HIS FAMILY AND THE PLEASURE HE GOT FROM BEING AROUND HIS BROTHERS AND FATHER. ON 18 AUGUST 1950, BOBBIE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY, SERVING IN KOREA AS A SAPPER WITH ENGINEERS. HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED ON AUGUST 6, 1952 AND RETURNED HOME TO LETHBRIDGE. ONCE BACK, BOBBIE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO BE UPSTAIRS IN THE MINERS. IN JUNE 2010, HE RECALLED THAT THERE WERE NO WOMEN ALLOWED IN THE CLUB AND THAT A DRAFT BEER WAS 10 CENTS A GLASS. NO HARD LIQUOR WAS ALLOWED TO BE SERVED IN THE CLUB AT THE TIME. IF WOMEN WERE FINALLY ALLOWED TO VISIT THE CLUB, THEY WERE REQUIRED TO PATRONIZE A “SEPARATE SIDE” OF THE BAR. ACCORDING TO BOBBIE, “THE LIBRARY WAS VERY SPORTS-ORIENTED”. IT DONATED FUNDS TO MANY CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS AND ACCORDING TO MARLA, “BUILT QUITE A FEW PARKS IN LETHBRIDGE”. BOBBIE’S DEDICATION TO THE CLUB AND HIS APPRECIATION OF THE CLUB’S IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY, LED HIM TO SERVE AS BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN 1986. AFTER A 3 YEAR TERM AS DIRECTOR, HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT, WHICH HE OCCUPIED UNTIL 1995. FOR HIS SERVICE, HE WAS AWARDED A LIFE MEMBERSHIP. IN 1995, HE DECIDED TO TRANSFER HIS ENERGIES TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION NO. 4 BRANCH AND ITS EXECUTIVE, A DECISION MADE FOLLOWING A SECOND, BUT UNSUCCESSFUL BID FOR THE MINERS’ PRESIDENCY. BOBBY WAS EQUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT HIS SERVICE WITH THE LEGION, BUT ULTIMATELY HIS HEART REMAINED WITH THE MINERS WHICH CLOSED IN 2003. IN BOBBIE’S OPINION, THE CAMARADERIE IN THE MINERS WAS WITHOUT EQUAL. THE CLUB BLAZER WITH CREST WAS WORN BY BOBBIE TO EVERY BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING AND TO FUNCTIONS INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, CHEQUE PRESENTATION AND SPONSORED SPORTING EVENTS (AKA. SPORTS HALL OF FAME). HE OWNED NO BLAZER BUT THIS ONE PROVIDED TO HIM WITHOUT CHARGE BY THE CLUB IN 1986. BOBBIE’S FONDEST MEMORIES OF TIME SPENT AT THE MINERS INCLUDE HIS DAILY VISITS TO THE MINERS FOR BEER FOLLOWING THE COMPLETION OF HIS WORK DAY AS A CARRIER WITH CANADA POST. FROM EARLY AFTERNOON UNTIL 4:00 HE SHARED TIME WITH FRIENDS CORRIDO SANTONI AND WORK COLLEAGUES BILL HARCUZ AND ANDY PONECH – EACH ONE VOLUNTEERING IN SUCCESSION TO PAY FOR THE NEXT DAY’S ROUNDS. IN THE EARLY DAYS ON THE PRAIRIES, IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, WHO MIGHT BE TWENTY MILES AWAY, YOU WERE IN DEEP DOO-DOO IF YOU HAD A BIG PROBLEM. THAT’S WHAT THESE SOCIETIES CAME OUT OF WAS THAT NEED. THE NEED PRETTY WELL HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF, I THINK. THERE ARE STILL CLUBS BUT THEY’RE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CLUBS NOW.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT HER MOTIVATION FOR DONATING HER MOTHER’S REGALIA TO THE MUSEUM, WOOD NOTED, “MY MOTHER HAS TURNED 99 YEARS OLD IN JANUARY. SHE HAS DEMENTIA AND SO WE’VE HAD TO MOVE HER FROM HER SENIOR’S LODGE ROOM INTO A MORE SECURE ROOM. CONSEQUENTLY THE LAST OF THE THINGS THAT SHE TREASURED OR VALUED MUST BE DISPERSED. MY BROTHER AND I DECIDED THAT, SINCE THE ELKS AND THE ROYAL PURPLE MEANT SO MUCH TO HER, THAT [THESE WERE] THE [OBJECTS] WE WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO THE MUSEUM. IT DEPICTS A PERIOD OF TIME WHEN THE WOMEN USED THESE ASSOCIATIONS AS A SUPPORT GROUP FOR THEMSELVES. IT WAS ANOTHER ONE OF THESE SECRET SOCIETIES, WHEN IN FACT THEY WERE SISTERHOODS. COWIE SANG IN ST PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH CHOIR AND MR. COWIE SANG AT HOME. ANNE BEGAN SINGING AT AGE EIGHT, AND BY AGE 14 SHE WAS CONDUCTING THE JUNIOR CHOIR OF ST. PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH IN SUTHERLAND. IN SASKATOON, ANNE STUDIED PIANO WITH LYLE GUSTIN AND VOICE WITH F.B. MORRISON. SHE ALSO STUDIED WITH DR. ERNEST VINCI OF TORONTO. MR. GUSTIN ENCOURAGED ANNE TO TAKE MUSIC COURSES AT ST. ANDREWS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN. ANNE EVENTUALLY EARNED AN A.R.C.T. FROM THE TORONTO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC, AS WELL AS AN A. MUS (ASSOCIATE IN MUSIC) AND L. AFTER THEY WERE MARRIED, THE CAMPBELLS MOVED TO CALGARY SO THAT DON COULD BEGIN A JOB AS A TRAVELING SALESMAN WITH MARSHALL WELLS HARDWARE. THEIR SONS MAC AND STEWART WERE BORN IN CALGARY, IN 1943 AND 1947 RESPECTIVELY. AFTER 1947 DON BECAME MANAGER OF THE HYDE AND SUNDAL HARDWARE STORE IN PICTURE BUTTE. DON EVENTUALLY BOUGHT THE STORE, CHANGED ITS NAME TO CAMPBELL HARDWARE AND WAS IN BUSINESS FOR 31½ YEARS. SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH ASKED ANNE TO FORM AN ALL GIRLS YOUTH CHOIR IN 1953, AND THE CAMPBELLS MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE. THE CHOIR ACCEPTED GIRLS FROM ALL OVER SOUTHERN ALBERTA. THE JUNIOR CHOIR SANG AT CHURCH SERVICES ONCE A MONTH, AND PERFORMED OPERETTAS IN THE SOUTHMINSTER CHURCH HALL. IN 1964 ANNE FORMED THE TEEN CLEFS, A 20 MEMBER CHAMBER CHOIR WITH GIRLS OF HIGH SCHOOL AGE. IN 1967 ANNE WAS INVITED TO TAKE THE GROUP TO MONTREAL FOR A PERFORMANCE AT EXPO 67. IN 1968 THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS WERE FORMED. THE CHOIR WENT TO THE UNITED KINGDOM THAT YEAR TO COMPETE AT THE TEESIDE INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND AND THE LLANGOLLEN INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL EISTEDDFOD IN WALES. UNTIL THE EARLY 1990S THE CHOIR CONTINUED TO TRAVEL THROUGHOUT CANADA AND OVERSEAS, AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPETE IN MANY MUSIC FESTIVALS. THE UNITED KINGDOM, DENMARK, BELGIUM, AUSTRIA AND JAPAN WERE AMONG THE COUNTRIES VISITED BY THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS. AS GIRLS FROM THE JUNIOR CHOIR AND ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS GREW OLDER, ANNE FORMED THE LINNET SINGERS SO THAT THOSE WHO WISHED COULD CONTINUE IN A CHOIR. THE LINNET SINGERS ALSO TRAVELED AND COMPETED EXTENSIVELY. ANNE CREATED THE MINI CHOIR AS A TRAINING GROUP FOR GIRLS SIX TO EIGHT YEARS OLD. SOME FORMER MEMBERS OF ANNE’S CHOIRS HAVE ESTABLISHED SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN MUSIC AS TEACHERS, CHOIR LEADERS AND OPERA SINGERS. ANNE CAMPBELL HAS RECEIVED MORE THAN A DOZEN AWARDS FOR HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHORAL MUSIC IN CANADA, INCLUDING THE ORDER OF CANADA IN 1977 AND HONOURARY DOCTOR OF LAWS DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE IN 1983. ANNE’S CHOIRS HAVE WON MORE THAN 20 AWARDS IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS. THE CHOIRS RECORDED 14 ALBUMS, AND WERE BROADCAST MANY TIMES BY THE CBC AND CKUA RADIO. THE GIRLS SANG MANY TYPES OF MUSIC: MADRIGALS, FOLK SONGS, SACRED MUSIC AND SHOW TUNES. THEY SANG AT VARIOUS TIMES IN ENGLISH, JAPANESE, GERMAN AND FRENCH. IN THE MID 1990S ANNE CAMPBELL RETIRED FROM ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CHOIRS. IN 1999 SHE MOVED TO COCHRANE, ALBERTA TO LIVE NEAR HER SON STEWART AND HIS FAMILY.

I KNOW THAT SOME OF THEM, DEPENDING ON WHAT POSITION THEY HELD WITHIN THE CLUB, THEY WOULD WEAR ALL WHITE.” WOOD DISCUSSED HER MOTHER’S TIME IN THE ORDER OF ROYAL PURPLE, STATING, “SHE CONSIDERS [THESE OBJECTS IN ACTIVE USE]. SHE IS VERY MUCH A PERSON WHO VALUES THAT SOCIETY. IT HELPED HER A NUMBER OF TIMES. THE GOVERNMENT HAS SET UP HEALTH CARE, COMMUNITIES HAVE SET UP ASSISTANCE FOR WOMEN WHO ARE ABUSED, THERE’S DRUG ASSISTANCE. THERE IS MUCH MORE ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE. IN THE EARLY DAYS ON THE PRAIRIES, IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, WHO MIGHT BE TWENTY MILES AWAY, YOU WERE IN DEEP DOO-DOO IF YOU HAD A BIG PROBLEM. THAT’S WHAT THESE SOCIETIES CAME OUT OF WAS THAT NEED. THE NEED PRETTY WELL HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF, I THINK. THERE ARE STILL CLUBS BUT THEY’RE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CLUBS NOW.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT HER MOTIVATION FOR DONATING HER MOTHER’S REGALIA TO THE MUSEUM, WOOD NOTED, “MY MOTHER HAS TURNED 99 YEARS OLD IN JANUARY. SHE HAS DEMENTIA AND SO WE’VE HAD TO MOVE HER FROM HER SENIOR’S LODGE ROOM INTO A MORE SECURE ROOM. CONSEQUENTLY THE LAST OF THE THINGS THAT SHE TREASURED OR VALUED MUST BE DISPERSED. MY BROTHER AND I DECIDED THAT, SINCE THE ELKS AND THE ROYAL PURPLE MEANT SO MUCH TO HER, THAT [THESE WERE] THE [OBJECTS] WE WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO THE MUSEUM. IT DEPICTS A PERIOD OF TIME WHEN THE WOMEN USED THESE ASSOCIATIONS AS A SUPPORT GROUP FOR THEMSELVES. IT WAS ANOTHER ONE OF THESE SECRET SOCIETIES, WHEN IN FACT THEY WERE SISTERHOODS. THEY WERE MEANT MAINLY FOR THEM TO HAVE PEOPLE TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER. THE EDGES OF CAPELET ARE TRIMMED IN A WIDE BLACK LACE (DIFFERENT FROM ABOVE). BACK OF PIECE IS LINED WITH A BURLAP MATERIAL, UNDERNEATH BLACK COTTON. BLACK COTTON HAS MULTIPLE HOLES IN IT - POSSIBLY INSECT RELATED. LONG, BIAS STITCHES ARE EASILY VISIBLE ON FRONT AND BACK.

FUR COAT WAS GIFTED TO THE DONOR SOMETIME IN 1994. THE COAT WAS GIVEN AWAY AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TIME THAT ISABEL WILKINS, THE COAT'S ORIGINAL OWNER, DONATED HER DOCTORAL ROBES TO THE GALT. WILKINS GAVE THE COAT TO THE DONOR WITH THE DESIRE THAT SHE WOULD WEAR IT. THE DONOR, HOWEVER, NEVER DID. AT THE TIME OF THE COAT'S GIFTING, BOTH THE DONOR AND WILKINS RESIDED IN BC. THE TWO WERE LIFE LONG FRIENDS. DONOR STATED THAT SHE DONATED THE FUR COAT "TO HONOR DR. ISABEL WILKINS, A FINE TEACHER". WILKINS WAS BORN IN CALGARY IN 1907 AND GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL THERE. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, SHE ATTENDED CALGARY NORMAL SCHOOL WITH THE INTENT TO BECOME A TEACHER. AFTER TWO YEARS SHE HAD SAVED ENOUGH MONEY TO GO TO UNIVERSITY IN EDMONTON. IN 1930, SHE GRADUATED AS B.A. GOLD MEDALIST AND THEN BEGAN WORK AT THE LETHBRIDGE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE WHERE SHE TAUGHT AN ESTIMATED 7,000-10,000 STUDENTS UNTIL HER RETIREMENT IN 1971. SHE MARRIED DR. FRANK WILKINS, A PIONEER LETHBRIDGE OPTOMETRIST. IN 1942, SHE OBTAINED AN M.A. THROUGH SUMMER SESSIONS AT MCGILL AND THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA. HER THESIS WAS "A COMPARISON OF SIR WALTER SCOTT AND PROSPER MERIMEE IN THE FIELD OF THE HISTORIC NOVEL". IN 1947, THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF LAVAL, SHE COMPLETED HER PH.D. "MAGNA CUM LAUDE". THIS THESIS WAS "AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF CANADA DURING THE DOZEN YEARS PRIOR TO THE END OF THE FRENCH REGIME, BASED ON A RECENTLY-DISCOVERED SERIES OF PRIVATE LETTERS WRITTEN AT THAT TIME, IN THE FORM OF A DIARY ('LA CORRESPONDENCE DE MADAME BEGON')." SHE DID POST-DOCTORAL WORK AT SORBONNE FROM 1964-1965. WILKINS RETIRED TO BC FROM LETHBRIDGE IN THE 80S AND DIED IN RICHMOND IN 1998. SHE WAS BURIED IN CALGARY AT THE UNION CEMETERY. A CONVERSATION WITH LESLIE CALMAN, WHOSE FATHER OWNED THE CANADIAN FURRIERS IN LETHBRIDGE, TOOK PLACE ON ON AUGUST 10, 2007 ABOUT THE LETHBRIDGE FURRIERS. CALMAN STATED THAT THE COAT WAS MADE FROM MUSKRAT FUR AND THAT THE STYLE OF THE COAT INDICATED THAT IT WAS LIKELY FROM THE EARLY TO MID 70S. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE OWNER OF THE LETHBRIDGE FURRIERS WAS A MAN NAMED BILL BORKETT WHO OWNED THE STORE UP UNTIL HIS DEATH IN THE 80'S. CALMAN CLAIMED THAT AFTER THE STORE CLOSED IT WAS BOUGHT BY HIS UNCLE AND TURNED INTO THE NEW YORK FUR STORE. CALMAN ESTIMATED THAT THE COAT WAS POSSIBLY PURCHASED FOR $1200.00 TO $1500.00 IN THE 70'S. THIS CHIGO COSTUME WAS WORN BY SMALL GIRLS WHO PARTICIPATED IN A BUDDHIST CELEBRATION. IN JAPANESE, CHIGO TRANSLATES TO, “YOUNG CHILDREN.” THE TOP, TERMED A “KARIGINU” IN JAPANESE, HAS WIDE SLEEVES THAT ARE ONLY PARTIALLY CONNECTED AT THE SHOULDER TO THE REST OF THE TOP. ACCORDING TO PHOTOGRAPHS, BOYS AND GIRLS WOULD WEAR THE KARIGINU SUCH THAT THE ARMS DID NOT GO THROUGH THE SLEEVES. THE SKIRT, TERMED A “HAKAMA” IN JAPANESE, IS WORN OVERTOP THE KARIGINU. THE HAKANA IS ARRANGED SUCH THAT THE TIES ARE SITUATED ON THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE CHILD. IN ADDITION TO THE KARIGINU AND HAKANA, CHILDREN WORE CROWNS, HELD ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS, AND WORE THE MAKE-UP OF THE NOBILITY. THIS MAKE-UP, TERMED “KUGEMAYU” IN JAPANESE, CONSISTED OF TWO BLACK DOTS ON THE LOWER MIDDLE FOREHEAD. DURING IMPORTANT CELEBRATIONS, AN O’CHIGO PARADE WAS OFTEN HELD. CHILDREN, TYPICALLY 4 TO 10 YEARS OLD, WORE CHIGO COSTUMES. EITHER INSIDE THE CHURCH AROUND THE SHRINE OR OUTSIDE ALONG A STREET, THE MINISTER WALKED A SHORT DISTANCE WHILE RECITING SUTRA. FOLLOWING THE MINISTER SOMEONE TOSSED PAPER FLOWER PETALS. THE CHILDREN WALKED WHERE THE FLOWER PETALS FELL. IN 1961, REVERED KAWAMURA SR. LED A TOUR OF 55 BUDDHISTS AND NON-BUDDHISTS TO CELEBRATE THE 700TH MEMORIAL ANNIVERSARY OF SHINRAN SHONIN, THE FOUNDER OF SHIN BUDDHISM, AT THE MOTHER TEMPLE IN KYOTO, JAPAN. 50 O'CHIGO COSTUMES FOR BOYS AND GIRLS WERE PURCHASED AND GIVEN COLLECTIVELY TO THE BUDDHIST CHURCHES IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA AS A GIFT. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS COSTUME REPRESENTS ONE OF THE GIFTED O'CHIGO COSTUMES. THIS CHIGO COSTUME WAS LAST WORN AT THE CALGARY BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN 2006 FOR A 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. THIS COSTUME WAS WORN BY WIM VONKEMAN DURING HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES OF THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB OF LETHBRIDGE. BORN IN THE NETHERLANDS IN 1929, VONKEMAN IMMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1981 WITH HIS WIFE TRUDY AND THEIR THREE CHILDREN, ANINE, ALWIN, AND HERWIN, SETTLING IN THE PICTURE BUTTE AREA. VONKEMAN WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB, AND WAS ACTIVE WITH THE GROUP UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 2004. ON JANUARY 21, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, TRUDY VONKEMAN, ABOUT THIS COSTUME AND HER HUSBAND WIM’S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB OF LETHBRIDGE. SHE SAID: “MY HUSBAND’S FAMILY WENT [TO CANADA] IN 1952 – HE WAS THE ELDEST SON AND HAD A NICE JOB IN HOLLAND SO HE STAYED BEHIND. THEN WE MET AND MARRIED AND HAD KIDS, AND IN 1979 WE WENT ON HOLIDAYS [IN CANADA] WITH THE KIDS FOR FOUR WEEKS… THEY ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH AND WHEN WE WERE BACK IN HOLLAND I HEARD MY TWO SONS [SAYING] ‘AFTER SCHOOL WE GO TO CANADA’… I SAID TO MY HUSBAND, ‘LET’S GO THEN AS A FAMILY, I DON’T WENT TO SPLIT THE FAMILY LATER’… THERE WAS A BIG FAMILY WAITING [IN CANADA] AND MY PARENTS DIED [IN 1979 AND 1980] SO THERE WAS NO REASON NOT TO DO IT [WHILE] WE WERE STILL YOUNG ENOUGH. I WAS 47 AND MY HUSBAND WAS 51, BUT STILL WE MADE IT. THE WHOLE FAMILY LOOKED AFTER US [AND] THERE WAS A JOB ON THE FARM [OUTSIDE PICTURE BUTTE]... WE DIDN’T NEED TO IMMIGRATE BECAUSE IT WAS EVEN BETTER IN HOLLAND THAN WHEN WE CAME HERE. STILL, ONE OF THE LAST THINGS MY HUSBAND SAID TO ME [WAS] ‘WE HAD LESS MONEY HERE IN CANADA BUT I’M GLAD WE WENT.’” VONKEMAN CONTINUED: “IN HOLLAND, THE CHURCH WHERE I BELONGED TO, THE WOMEN WERE PASTORS. HERE, NOT. AND I STOPPED GOING WHEN… THERE WAS SOMETHING THE MEN HAD TO DECIDE AND THE WOMEN COULD [ONLY] GO TO THE KITCHEN AND MAKE COFFEE. HE WAS NOT ONE TO SIT AROUND AND READ A BOOK… HE WAS ALWAYS BUSY AND TRYING TO FIND NEW THINGS [FOR THE CLUB] TO DO… I WAS IN THE BACKGROUND, HELPING WITH THE ORGANIZING AND HELPING HIM THINK ABOUT THINGS… WIM STARTED [THE CLUB’S] MAGAZINE, ‘VAN DE HAK OP DE TAK’ [ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO ‘DOWN THE GRAPE VINE’]… THE CLUB HAD A FOLK DANCE GROUP AND THEY HAD THIS SUIT FOR IT. [THE DESIGN] IS FROM A CERTAIN PART OF HOLLAND [CALLED] VOLENDAM… A LITTLE FISHER TOWN WHERE ALL THE MEN WORE THIS IN THE PAST… [THE CLUB’S DANCE GROUP] WENT AROUND AND DANCED IN OLD FOLKS HOMES… AND THEY HAD A CHOIR TOO, ALL DRESSED UP IN VOLENDAM COSTUMES, SINGING ON DIFFERENT EVENINGS… YOU HAVE EVENINGS WHERE YOU DANCE AND YOU HAVE A MEAL, AND DRINK A GLASS OF WINE, AND HAVE FUN.” ON JUNE 24, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED WIM VONKEMAN’S DAUGHTER, ANINE. SHE SAID: “AFTER MY DAD PASSED AWAY, WE HAD [THE COSTUME] DRY-CLEANED… AND I COULDN’T GET RID OF IT. IT HAD TO GO BACK TO THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB, TO THE DANCERS, SO THAT SOMEONE ELSE COULD WEAR IT. MY DAD WAS PRETTY SHORT, AND IT WAS A SPECIFIC SIZE FOR HIM [AND] IT WAS PART OF HIM, SO I JUST COULDN’T GET RID OF IT… WHEN I KEPT IT, I KNEW THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO KEEP IT MYSELF FOREVER, AND THAT IT SHOULD GO INTO THE MUSEUM… BECAUSE MY DAD HELPED ESTABLISH THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB… IT SUCH A BIG PART OF THE WHOLE LETHBRIDGE STORY… HE SET UP THE ASSOCIATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER PEOPLE, IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN A CONNECTION BETWEEN DUTCH CANADIANS, AND KEEP SOME TRADITIONS GOING, OR BRING SOME NEW TALENTS. AND HE DID A LOT OF STUFF CROSS-CULTURALLY WITH CANADIANS AND DUTCH PEOPLE, BRINGING CHOIRS AND DANCERS OVER FROM HOLLAND, DOING STUFF IN THE STATES WITH OTHER DUTCH ASSOCIATIONS, AND JUST TRYING TO CONNECT PEOPLE… THERE ARE MANY RURAL DUTCH-CANADIANS – FARMERS, FARMERS’ FAMILIES – BUT THERE’S ALSO LOTS OF PEOPLE IN LETHBRIDGE AND SMALLER COMMUNITIES. BUT THEY ASSOCIATE THROUGH CHURCHES, I THINK… AND MY MOM AND DAD LEFT THE CHURCH [SO] THAT COMMUNITY, FOR THEM, WAS NOT THERE. THE COLLECTION OF OBJECTS BELONGING TO THE MEISSER FAMILY WAS DONATED BY JUDY WRIGHT, NIECE OF LOWELL MEISSER, WHO OPERATED A FARM OUTSIDE WARNER WITH HIS BROTHER ROME AS THE ‘MEISSER BROS’ FROM 1929 TO 1946. JUDY’S MOTHER WAS THE SISTER OF LOWELL’S WIFE ELINOR, AND SHE SPENT MUCH OF HER CHILDHOOD LIVING WITH THEM AND ROME MEISSER, DUE TO HER MOTHER BEING UNWELL. IN HER LATER ADULT LIFE, JUDY TOOK CARE OF “UNC” ROME AT HIS WATERTON RESIDENCE, AND BECAUSE ROME AND HIS BROTHER LOWELL DID NOT HAVE ANY LIVING DIRECT DESCENDANTS, JUDY WAS LEFT THE FAMILY BELONGINGS WHEN ROME DIED IN 2004. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ARTIFACT WAS EXTRACTED FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED WITH THE DONOR BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON NOVEMBER 14, 2013, AS WELL AS FROM A DOCUMENT WRITTEN BY HER AT THE TIME OF THE DONATION. WRIGHT SAID: “I CANNOT SPECIFICALLY REMEMBER [ROME] WEARING THESE COVERALLS BUT I JUST KNOW HE ALWAYS DID. HE WORKED IN THE SHOP; HE WORKED IN THE FIELD; HE WENT LOOKING AT HIS CROPS. HE ALWAYS WORE HIS COVERALLS. HIS CLOTHES WERE KEPT CLEAN, RIGHT UP UNTIL THE VERY END… HE WORKED. I CAME HOME WHEN HE WAS 96 OR SO AND HE WAS PAINTING THE HOUSE IN WATERTON HIS COVERALLS…HE WORE THEM AS HE STAINED THE COTTAGE AND THE GARAGE, AND PAINTED THE WINDOW AND DOOR FRAMES BRIGHT FIRE ENGINE RED. I WASN’T AROUND, BUT I’M SURE HE WAS IN HIS COVERALLS WHEN HE CUT THE GARAGE INTO TWO PARTS, MOVED ONE END BACK AND RE-BUILT THE MISSING SECTION SO THAT HIS NEW GOLD 1966 CADILLAC WOULD FIT… HE BARBECUED, MOSTLY, SOMETIMES IN HIS COVERALLS. HE WORKED AROUND THE YARD, AROUND WATERTON, HE PUT HIS COVERALLS ON IF HE MIGHT GET DIRTY. AND I JUST PICTURE HIM WORKING… YOU DIDN’T THROW ANYTHING AWAY, YOU FIXED IT. THERE WERE APPLIANCES THAT WERE RE-WIRED AND TAPED. EVERYTHING WAS FIXED BY HIM. YOU DIDN’T THROW ANYTHING AWAY AND IT WENT RIGHT TO WELDING AND EVERYTHING ELSE. HE COULD DO ANYTHING.” THE FOLLOWING BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM ROME MEISSER’S MANUSCRIPT ‘THE MEISSER’S AND OTHER RAMBLINGS’ AND DONATIONS OF FAMILY PAPERS MADE BY WRIGHT TO THE GALT ARCHIVES. THE MEISSER FAMILY PATRIARCH, MICHAEL MEISSER, WAS BORN IN SWITZERLAND IN 1830 AND IMMIGRATED TO ALMA, WISCONSIN IN 1846. HIS SON, JOHN LUTZI MEISSER MARRIED MARIE KINDSCHI ON APRIL 30, 1898 AND THEY MOVED TO WARNER, ALBERTA TO FARM IN 1910, LOOKING FOR A DRIER CLIMATE FOR MARIE, WHO SUFFERED FROM TUBERCULOSIS. THE COUPLE HAD FIVE CHILDREN: ORMA, LOWELL, JOHN (WHO DIED AT AGE TWO OF PNEUMONIA), ROME, AND MARIE. IN 1912, MOTHER MARIE DIED IN A TUBERCULOSIS CLINIC IN SALT LAKE CITY, AND FIVE YEARS LATER FATHER JOHN DIED FROM HEAD TRAUMA SUSTAINED IN A GRAIN ELEVATOR ACCIDENT. ONE OF THE CHILDREN’S PATERNAL AUNTS, FRENA, CAME TO WARNER TO HELP THEM WITH SCHOOLING AND RUNNING THE FARM. IN 1920, ORMA MARRIED LEE TENNEY AND IN 1926 LOWELL MARRIED ELINOR TENNEY, AND THE TWO COUPLES LOOKED AFTER THE TWO YOUNGER SIBLINGS UNTIL ORMA AND LEE MOVED TO CALIFORNIA IN 1931. THE YOUNGEST SISTER, MARIE, LATER JOINED THEM WITH HER SON JIM. LOWELL AND ROME FARMED TOGETHER FROM THE SEASON FOLLOWING THEIR FATHER’S DEATH (WHEN THEY WERE 17 AND 13 YEARS OLD, RESPECTIVELY) UNTIL 1945 WHEN THEIR LAND WAS DIVIDED FOR TAX BENEFIT. ROME NEVER MARRIED, AND IN 1928 HAD A SHORT STINT IN PILOT’S TRAINING BEFORE RETURNING TO FARMING PERMANENTLY. LOWELL AND ELINOR’S SON JERALD WAS BORN IN 1929. BY 1957 THE MEISSERS RETIRED FROM FARMING AND LEASED OUT THEIR LAND, AND IN 1958 THE FAMILY BOUGHT A CABIN IN WATERTON PARK, WHERE THEY SPENT ALL FOLLOWING SUMMERS. LOWELL AND ELINOR’S SON JERALD SPLIT HIS TIME BETWEEN FARMING IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA AND VARIOUS PROJECTS IN THE UNITED STATES. HE ENROLLED IN THE CATHOLIC SEMINARY IN SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, BUT PASSED AWAY IN 1990 BEFORE HE COULD BE ORDAINED. LOWELL DIED IN 1988, ELINOR FOLLOWED IN 1992, AND ROME PASSED AWAY IN 2004. THE FOLLOWING REMEMBRANCES OF ROME ‘UNC’ MEISSER WERE EXCERPTED FROM THE NOVEMBER 14, 2013 INTERVIEW WITH THE DONOR. WRIGHT SAID: “I LIVED WITH THEM AND WENT OUT TO THE FARM ALL SUMMER LONG EVERY YEAR FROM THE TIME I WAS FIVE OR SIX YEARS OLD… I JUST HONESTLY THINK THAT I AM WHO I AM TODAY BECAUSE OF MY UNCLE ROME. MY DAD WAS A STAUNCH OLD ENGLISHMAN AND HE COULDN’T RELATE TO ME. HE WAS 45 YEARS OLD WHEN I WAS BORN BUT HE COULDN’T RELATE TO ME. SO, MY UNCLE COULD… HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MARRIED WITH AT LEAST A DOZEN CHILDREN. IN HIS EARLY NINETIES, WHEN I FIRST GOT THERE [TO WATERTON] WE’D GO GROCERY SHOPPING. I’D HAVE TO WAIT WHILE HE STOPPED AND CHATTED WITH ALL THE CHILDREN HE’D COME ACROSS. HE SHOULD HAVE HAD LOTS OF KIDS. HE JUST LOVED KIDS AND I WAS A LITTLE KID… I WAS THERE FROM PRACTICALLY BIRTH AND LIVED MONTHS AT A TIME WITH HIM… HE COULD AFFORD TO LOOK AFTER THE COMMUNITY AS WELL… HE GAVE GENEROUSLY TO [COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS]. HE GAVE TO THE MILK RIVER HOSPITAL. HE DONATED $200,000 FOR THE HOCKEY GIRLS’ RESIDENCE. THEY HAD NO MONEY AND THAT’S WHY WE NOW HAVE A HOCKEY GIRLS’ RESIDENCE THAT HAS A HUGE KITCHEN AND HOUSES UP TO 25 GIRLS, AND KEEPS OUR WARNER SCHOOL OPEN. SO THAT IS A VERY BIG GIFT, HIS DONATIONS. THEY ALSO STARTED A MEISSER SCHOLARSHIP IN 1967 AND TWO WEEKS AGO I WENT OUT AND GAVE THE TROPHY AND THE MONEY TO THE LAST GIRL THAT WON IT. AND IT WILL GO ON INDEFINITELY AS LONG AS THERE’S A SCHOOL…HE WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF CHILDREN AND EDUCATION. THE SCHOLARSHIP, THE HOCKEY GIRLS, KEEPING THE WARNER SCHOOL OPEN - BIG FOCUS FOR HIM – WAS EDUCATION AND CHILDREN… HE WAS ONE OF THOSE KIND OF PRACTICALLY ANONYMOUS DONORS IN THE PAST. HOWEVER, AS HE GOT A LITTLE OLDER, I THINK HE ENJOYED THE ATTENTION. THEY MADE A BIG DEAL ABOUT THE HOCKEY SCHOOL. THE RESIDENCE HAS GOT, HUGE, IT HAS HIS NAME ON IT BUT I DON’T THINK HE SAW THAT. AFTER LIVING AT HOME WORKING SEVEN YEARS IN STAVELY, DAGMAR MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE AND WORKED FOR AGT UNTIL SHE MARRIED LAWRENCE DOYLE, ALSO FROM STAVELY AND PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND. TURNER ENLISTED IN CALGARY IN 1934, SERVING OVERSEAS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WITH THE 2ND ANTI-TANK REGIMENT FROM LETHBRIDGE. HE REMAINED IN GERMANY WITH THE ARMY OF OCCUPATION FOR TWO YEARS AFTER THE WAR, RETIRING FROM SERVICE IN 1966. TURNER JOINED THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION IN 1960 AND, SHORTLY BEFORE HIS DEATH IN 1998, WAS AWARDED A LIFE MEMBERSHIP IN THE GENERAL STEWART BRANCH #4. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. ACCORDING TO HER OBITUARY, ROSA TURNER “WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ENGLAND. DURING THE WAR YEARS SHE JOINED THE CIVIL DEFENCE AND STUDIED FIRST AID, AMBULANCE WORK, AND GAS WARFARE, VOLUNTARY WORK WHICH EARNED HER A MEDAL. IN 1959 SHE MOVED TO CANADA AND MARRIED ANDY DUNIPACE. THEY RESIDED IN CHAMPTION UNTIL HIS PASSING IN 1977. IN 1978 SHE MARRIED ART TURNER AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE.” ROSA PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 91 ON AUGUST 11, 2002. ARTHUR “ART” A. TURNER C.D. WAS BORN IN BOURNVILLE, ENGLAND AND MOVED TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 15. HE SERVED IN THE CANADIAN ARMY FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS, INCLUDING OVERSEAS SERVICE DURING WWII IN FRANCE, BELGIUM, HOLLAND, AND GERMANY. HE WAS TWICE WOUNDED, INCLUDING THE LOSS OF HIS HEARING FROM BOMBINGS. HE ALSO SERVED IN GERMANY FOR TWO YEARS WITH THE ARMY OF OCCUPATION FOLLOWING THE WAR. UPON HIS RETURN TO CANADA, HE TRAINED MILITA AND ARMY CADETS THROUGHOUT MANITOBA, SASKATCHEWAN, ALBERTA, AND BRITISH COLUMBIA. HIS OBITUARY LISTS HIS TITLE AND NAME AS WARRANT OFFICER (RETIRED) ARTHUR “ART” A. TURNER, C.D. ART PASSED AWAY ON MAY 2, 1998. JACKET BELONGED TO DONOR'S FATHER, REV. G.G. NAKAYAMA, WHO USED IT LATER IN HIS LIFE AFTER HE MOVED BACK TO VANCOUVER. THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WAS ORIGINALLY FROM VANCOUVER BUT MOVED TO COALDALE FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN THEY WERE INTERNED AT SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970.
