THE ABOA (ALBERTA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION) EMBROIDERED CREST ON THE SHIRT’S SLEEVE CAME INTO EXISTENCE APPROXIMATELY TEN YEARS AGO IN 2002 WHEN FEBA RULES WERE BROUGHT INTO FORCE. CHANGES IN INSIGNIA OR EVEN THE POST-FEBA INTRODUCTION OF STRIPPED SHIRTS ENABLE THE SHIRT’S DATING. THE SHIRT WAS WORN IN THE PAST YEAR ALBEIT IN VERY LIMITED (LOCAL) CIRCUMSTANCES DUE TO THE ABOA CREST’S DISCONTINUATION ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO. THE ISSUE AROSE THAT THE WEARER’S IDENTIFICATION WITH A PROVINCE (AKA. ALBERTA) MAY LEAD SOME TO CHALLENGE HIS/HER IMPARTIALITY (AKA. CALLS BENEFICIAL TO SAME PROVINCE’S TEAM).” THE SHIRT WAS WORN ACROSS SOUTHERN ALBERTA, RANGING IN COMMUNITIES FROM NANTON (NORTH) AND MILK RIVER (SOUTH) TO THE CROWSNEST PASS (WEST) AND MEDICINE HAT (EAST). HALMA AND OTHER OFFICIALS ORDERED THEIR APPAREL WHOLESALE THROUGH THE SOUTHERN ALBERTA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION, BASED OUT OF THE ASSOCIATION’S TREASURER’S HOME. THE ASSOCIATION SOURCED THE SHIRTS IN BULK FROM DISTRIBUTORS SUCH AS REFEREES.COM. THIS CHIGO COSTUME WAS WORN BY SMALL GIRLS WHO PARTICIPATED IN A BUDDHIST CELEBRATION. IN JAPANESE, CHIGO TRANSLATES TO, “YOUNG CHILDREN.” THE TOP, TERMED A “KARIGINU” IN JAPANESE, HAS WIDE SLEEVES THAT ARE ONLY PARTIALLY CONNECTED AT THE SHOULDER TO THE REST OF THE TOP. ACCORDING TO PHOTOGRAPHS, BOYS AND GIRLS WOULD WEAR THE KARIGINU SUCH THAT THE ARMS DID NOT GO THROUGH THE SLEEVES. THE SKIRT, TERMED A “HAKAMA” IN JAPANESE, IS WORN OVERTOP THE KARIGINU. THE HAKANA IS ARRANGED SUCH THAT THE TIES ARE SITUATED ON THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE CHILD. IN ADDITION TO THE KARIGINU AND HAKANA, CHILDREN WORE CROWNS, HELD ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS, AND WORE THE MAKE-UP OF THE NOBILITY. THIS MAKE-UP, TERMED “KUGEMAYU” IN JAPANESE, CONSISTED OF TWO BLACK DOTS ON THE LOWER MIDDLE FOREHEAD. DURING IMPORTANT CELEBRATIONS, AN O’CHIGO PARADE WAS OFTEN HELD. CHILDREN, TYPICALLY 4 TO 10 YEARS OLD, WORE CHIGO COSTUMES. EITHER INSIDE THE CHURCH AROUND THE SHRINE OR OUTSIDE ALONG A STREET, THE MINISTER WALKED A SHORT DISTANCE WHILE RECITING SUTRA. FOLLOWING THE MINISTER SOMEONE TOSSED PAPER FLOWER PETALS. THE CHILDREN WALKED WHERE THE FLOWER PETALS FELL. IN 1961, REVERED KAWAMURA SR. LED A TOUR OF 55 BUDDHISTS AND NON-BUDDHISTS TO CELEBRATE THE 700TH MEMORIAL ANNIVERSARY OF SHINRAN SHONIN, THE FOUNDER OF SHIN BUDDHISM, AT THE MOTHER TEMPLE IN KYOTO, JAPAN. 50 O'CHIGO COSTUMES FOR BOYS AND GIRLS WERE PURCHASED AND GIVEN COLLECTIVELY TO THE BUDDHIST CHURCHES IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA AS A GIFT. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS COSTUME REPRESENTS ONE OF THE GIFTED O'CHIGO COSTUMES. THIS CHIGO COSTUME WAS LAST WORN AT THE CALGARY BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN 2006 FOR A 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. VISUAL DOCUMENTATION OF O-CHIGO COSTUMES, REPRESENTING THE ONE DONATED, CAN BE FOUND IN THE GALT’S ARCHIVES, RELATED TO THE 2009 DEDICATION EVENT. TO INCREASE FULLNESS OF THE UNDERSKIRT, THERE IS A 27.5 CM WIDE RUFFLE ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE SKIRT. THIS RUFFLE AND THE HEM LINE ARE BOTH TRIMMED IN A FLORAL PATTERNED LACE. L: 56.2CM W: 87.7CM OVERALL VERY GOOD CONDITION. LACE TRIM HAS COME UNDONE AT THE FRONT OF THE SKIRT, ON THE UPPER RUFFLE AND ESPECIALLY ON THE LOWER RUFFLE. .3: VEST. HANDMADE. PINK AND YELLOW FLOWERS WITH GREENERY ON MAROON BACKGROUND, CLOSES IN FRONT WITH BLACK VELCRO, CROPPED LENGTH. TRIMMED WITH PINK CREPE AROUND NECKLINE AND AROUND ARMS. STRIPES OF FABRIC OR RIBBON START 24.0 CM FROM BOTTOM OF SKIRT. THE FIRST STRIP IS MADE OF YELLOW SATIN FABRIC, THEN A THIN SECTION OF THE SKIRT FABRIC. NEXT IS A 10.7 CM WIDE STRIP OF PINK: A THIN SATIN RIBBON OF LIGHT PINK IS SEWN ONTO THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF A PIECE OF DARKER PINK CREPE, MUCH LIKE THAT FOUND ON THE TRIM OF THE VEST (P20150038002.3). BELOW THE TWO-TONED PINK STRIPE IS ANOTHER STRIP OF SKIRT FABRIC. THEN THERE IS A STRIP OF YELLOW SATIN RIBBON, BABY BLUE SATIN RIBBON, AND FINALLY AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE HEMLINE, A STRIP OF RED SATIN RIBBON. WIDTH OF SKIRT IS MEASURED ALONG HEM. THE SKIRT IS 69.0 CM WIDE WITH THE PLEATS PRESSED CLOSELY TOGETHER. SKIRT IS 287.5 CM WIDE WHEN THE PLEATS ARE FLATTENED. L: 65.0CM W: 287.5CM OVERALL EXCELLENT CONDITION. .5 APRON. HANDMADE. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION COMES FROM A VARIETY OF LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES, AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DONOR, MARIA JOKUTY, CONDUCTED BY KEVIN MACLEAN IN DECEMBER 2015, AND A BOOKLET ENTITLED “REMEMBRANCES OF OUR JOURNEY.” A DESCRIPTION OF MARIA’S EMBROIDERY AND SEWING WORK, THE HISTORY OF THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, AND THE JOKUTY’S JOURNEY TO CANADA CAN BE FOUND BELOW THE HISTORY OF THE ARTIFACTS. .1: BLOUSE. MARIA INDICATED THAT THIS ITEM OF CLOTHING IS THE ONLY ONE THAT SHE DIDN'T MAKE HERSELF. SHE DID ADD THE LACE RUFFLE TO THE SLEEVE. .4: OVER SKIRT. MARIA INDICATED IN HER INTERVIEW THAT THE PLEATING ALLOWED THE SKIRT TO FLARE WHEN THE DANCER SPINS: "THE SKIRT, WHEN YOU DANCE WITH THE SKIRT, WHEN YOU SPIN, THE GIRL SPINNING, YOU KNOW, IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. BECAUSE THIS IS ALSO EVERYTHING HOMEMADE. I MADE IT, OKAY, AND SENT IT TO MONTREAL FOR SPECIAL PRESSING, YOU KNOW, BUT LOOK AT THAT.” MARIA BEGAN WORKING ON THIS OUTFIT (AND 15 OTHER DANCE OUTFITS) IN 1977 AND IT TOOK HER “THREE-FOUR YEARS TO DO IT. YOU KNOW, I DESIGNED THE FLOWERS, AND THEN YOU KNOW THE EMBROIDERY, AND TO PUT IT TOGETHER WAS A VERY HARD JOB.” MAKING THE DANCE COSTUMES WAS IMPORTANT TO MARIA “BECAUSE [SHE] WAS PROUD OF BEING HUNGARIAN AND [SHE] WANTED TO SHOW SOMETHING DIFFERENT.” SHE LEARNED TO EMBROIDER AT THE AGE OF 12/13 FROM A NEIGHBOUR NAMED MARISSA IN HUNGARY. MARIA THINKS THAT MARISSA WAS ABOUT 25/26 YEARS OLD WHEN SHE TAUGHT MARIA HOW TO EMBROIDER. MARIA GETS A GREAT DEAL OF ENJOYMENT SEEING HER CREATIONS ON DANCERS WHILE THEY COMPETE: “VERY IMPORTANT. YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE ME. YOU PUT ALL ENERGY INTO IT TO BE ABLE TO FINISH IT AND THAT – BECAUSE HAPPINESS WAS WHEN THE GIRLS, THEY WAS DANCING ON A STAGE AND THEY’VE ALL GOT THE COSTUMES. YOU KNOW WHAT, WOW! YOU JUST CAN’T EX – I CAN’T EXPLAIN TO YOU.” MARIA GOT SOME OF HER PATTERNS FOR EMBROIDERY FROM THE EDMONTON HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY AND LATER RETURNED TO HUNGARY TO IMPROVE HER SKILLS, AS WELL AS TO LEARN HOW TO DO MACHINE EMBROIDERY. MARIA AND HER HUSBAND, CHESTER, RETURNED TO HUNGARY ABOUT 3 TIMES, STAYING EACH TIME FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS SO THAT MARIA COULD IMPROVE HER SKILLS. IN ADDITION TO CREATING THE COSTUMES, MARIA ALSO CARED FOR THEM, ENSURING THEY WERE AVAILABLE WHEN A DANCER WOULD NEED TO WEAR THEM: “YES, I WAS IN CHARGE. DRY CLEANING, WASHING, AND EVERYTHING. I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY YEARS, LONG YEARS UNTIL WE MOVED AND THEN WE DIDN’T HAVE NO ROOM, AND THEN SOMEBODY ELSE, YOU KNOW. AND THEN WE HAD A MEETING AND THE DANCERS, THEY WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEBODY ELSE WHO WOULD TAKE CARE OF THEM, ‘CAUSE YOU SHOULD’VE SEEN THE GIRLS THEY WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW, “NO, MRS. JOKUTY, YOU TAKE GOOD CARE!” AND I DID.” ACCORDING TO CHESTER (GEZA) JOKUTY’S OBITUARY, CHESTER AND MARIA WERE MARRIED IN HUNGARY ON OCTOBER 3, 1949. CHESTER SERVED IN THE HUNGARIAN ARMY IN 1940, WAS TAKEN PRISONER BY THE RUSSIANS IN 1945, AND HELD PRISONER IN RUSSIA FOR THREE AND A HALF YEARS. IN THE BOOKLET “REMEMBRANCES OF OUR JOURNEY” MARIA INDICATES THAT CHESTER WAS NOT KEEN TO REMAIN IN HUNGARY FOLLOWING THE HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION, BECAUSE OF HIS TREATMENT AT THE HANDS OF THE RUSSIANS: CHESTER “SPENT THREE AND A HALF YEARS AS A P.O.W. IN ODESSA WHERE PRISONERS WERE USED AS SLAVE LABOUR. CHESTER WAS NOT A BIG MAN AND BECAUSE OF THE CONDITIONS, WAS EXTREMELY WEAK. DURING THIS TIME IF THE PRISONERS WERE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP OR DO WHAT WAS REQUIRED OF THEM, THE RUSSIAN GUARDS SENT THEIR DOGS IN TO FORCE THE PRISONERS TO MOVE. HE HAD WITNESSED SO MUCH DEATH AND SUFFERING AND HAD SUFFERED SO BADLY IN THE COLD, AT THE HANDS OF THE RUSSIAN SOLDIERS, HE VOWED NEVER TO BE TAKEN BY THEM AGAIN.” MARIA CONTINUED IN THIS BOOKLET TO RECOUNT THEIR DECISION TO LEAVE HUNGARY: “SO, ON NOVEMBER 4TH [1956], WE DECIDED WE WOULD LEAVE … SO WE GATHERED OUR FAMILY AND MY MOTHER AND BEGAN WALKING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE TOWARDS AUSTRIA – ONLY ABOUT AN HOUR’S WALK FROM WHERE WE LIVED.” THE JOKUTY FAMILY REMAINED IN AUSTRIA FOR 6 MONTHS, WHERE MARIA RECALLS BEING WELL TREATED. THEY LEFT AUSTRIA AND ARRIVED IN ST. JOHN, NB AFTER A 12 DAY CROSSING, ON APRIL 22, 1957. AFTER A LONG TRAIN RIDE, THEY ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE. SHORTLY AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL THEY BEGAN WORK AS FARM LABOURERS IN THE SUGAR BEET FIELDS. AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ON OCTOBER 29, 1979 HAD THE FOLLOWING TO SAY ABOUT THE HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION: “DESCRIBED SIMPLY, THE REVOLUTION ESTABLISHED A GOVERNMENT THAT TRIED TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE SOVIET UNION’S INFLUENCE. THE SOVIET UNION, SUBSEQUENTLY, SENT ARMED TROOPS INTO HUNGARY TO REASSERT ITS INFLUENCE. IN THE AFTERMATH, MANY PEOPLE FLED, ABOUT 37,000 TO CANADA ACCORDING TO FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND IMMIGRATION STATISTICS … CHESTER JOKUTY OF THE ASSOCIATION SAID ABOUT 2,000 PERSONS OF HUNGARIAN ORIGINS LIVE IN LETHBRIDGE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.” MARIA INDICATED SEVERAL TIMES THROUGH THE COURSE OF HER INTERVIEW THAT LIFE WAS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE JOKUTY FAMILY WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE. THE FAMILY’S FIRST ACCOMMODATIONS LEFT LITTLE TO BE DESIRED: “WE DIDN’T HAVE RUNNING WATER, TOILET, WE HAVE TO PULL THE WATER FROM THINGS, YOU KNOW, AND CHOP THE WOOD TO MAKE BREAKFAST. AND WINTERTIME, WE WAS SCARED TO DEATH THAT KIDS, WE’LL FREEZE TO DEATH. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO STAY UP, OR MY HUSBAND DID TO BE SURE THE WOOD, YOU KNOW THE STOVE IN THE KITCHEN – ONLY THING – THAT GIVE US A LITTLE BIT WARMTH. SO WHEN I WENT OVER THERE, I COULDN’T SPEAK ENGLISH, SO THEN I LISTENED TO THE LANGUAGES WHERE I HEAR THE HUNGARIAN LANGUAGES. SO THEN I HEARD IT, AND I WENT AND I INTRODUCED MYSELF, WHO I AM, AND, “WE ARE ON THE SUGAR BEETS SOWING, WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP US? I NEED A GROCERY, WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP US …?” AND THEY FIND US SOMEBODY WHO WAS DRIVING, AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE NAME, WHAT THE NAME WAS, BECAUSE LONG TIME AGO, THEY GOT MY GROCERY IN THE CAR AND TOOK ME TO THE FARM FREE. CAN YOU IMAGINE? I WISH I COULD GIVE HIM A BIG HUG AND THANKFUL.” CHESTER’S OBITUARY INDICATES THAT HE “WAS A VERY PROUD HUNGARIAN AND A FOUNDING LIFETIME MEMBER OF THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA IN 1977 AND SERVED AS PRESIDENT FOR TEN YEARS. HE ALSO WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE SOUTHERN ALBERTA ETHNIC ASSOCIATION IN 1977.” IN A HERALD ARTICLE PUBLISHED ON NOVEMBER 14, 1989, MARGARET GUGYELKA (SECRETARY OF THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY) INDICATED THAT THE SOCIETY STARTED IN 1977: “’THERE WAS AN OLDTIMERS’ GROUP BEFORE THAT, BUT IT WAS MORE LIKE A FRATERNITY … THE SOCIETY WAS STARTED BY A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO CARRY ON HUNGARIAN TRADITIONS.’” AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 2, 1983 INDICATES THAT THE SOCIETY ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE WESTERN CANADIAN HUNGARIAN FOLK DANCE FESTIVAL. IN THE ARTICLE, CHESTER SAID THAT THE “FESTIVAL IS NOT A COMPETITION BUT RATHER AN EVENT DESIGNED TO KEEP CULTURAL HERITAGE ALIVE AND DANCE GROUPS IN TOUCH … JOKUTY SAYS HUNGARIAN DANCING HAS PROVEN ‘VERY, VERY POPULAR’ BECAUSE OF THE VARIETY OF DANCES – 46 IN ALL OF AT THE 1982 FESTIVAL HELD IN LETHBRIDGE – AND THE COLOURFUL COSTUMES UNIQUE TO EACH PROVINCE. THE COSTUMES HAVE PROVEN TO BE A BIG EXPENSE FOR THE SOCIETY SINCE ONE OUTFIT CAN COST UP TO $600 TO MAKE. MADE TO MEASURE BOOTS FROM MONTREAL ARE AS MUCH AS $150.” MARIA LAMENTS THAT THE SOCIETY ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE. SHE EXPLAINED THAT THERE SIMPLY ISN’T THE VOLUNTEER LABOUR FORCE TO CONTINUE DOING ALL THAT THE SOCIETY USED TO: “WHEN WE USED TO MAKE – EVERY YEAR BEFORE CHRISTMAS WE USED TO MAKE FOUR THOUSAND, FIVE THOUSAND CABBAGE ROLLS AND WE ADVERTISE, WE LET THE PEOPLE KNOW YOU HAVE TO PUT THE NAME AHEAD AND YOU HAVE TO COME PICK. ALL DAY WE WAS WORKING, BUT FIVE O’CLOCK, SIX O’CLOCK PEOPLE CAME AND TAKE [THE CABBAGE ROLLS] BECAUSE WE USED TO HAVE IT IN A BILL KERGAN CENTER, AND OVER THERE IS WALK-IN COOLER.. BUT NOW, THIS YEAR [2015], NO CABBAGE ROLLS AND PEOPLE ARE DISAPPOINTED, BUT WE DON’T HAVE NO VOLUNTEERS. EACH OF THESE LARGE FLOWERS IS APPROXIMATELY 7.0 CM IN DIAMETER. BETWEEN THE LARGE FLOWERS ARE SQUARE SHAPED SECTIONS OF CROCHETED LACE. JUST INSIDE THE LACE DETAILING ARE 10 SECTIONS OF EMBROIDERED FLOWERS, MADE UP OF FIVE PAIRS OF FLOWERS. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION COMES FROM A VARIETY OF LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES, AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DONOR, MARIA JOKUTY, AND A BOOKLET ENTITLED “REMEMBRANCES OF OUR JOURNEY.” A DESCRIPTION OF MARIA’S EMBROIDERY AND SEWING WORK, THE HISTORY OF THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, AND THE JOKUTY’S JOURNEY TO CANADA CAN BE FOUND BELOW THE HISTORY OF THE ARTIFACTS. MARIA MADE THIS COSTUME FOR HERSELF AND IS DONE IN THE STYLE OF THE KALOSCAI PROVINCE. IN AN INTERIVEW CONDUCTED BY KEVIN MACLEAN IN DECEMBER 2015, MARIA SAID THAT THIS DRESS WAS BETTER THAN THE OTHERS “BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE THIS PART (POINTING TO MACHINE EMBROIDERY).” MARIA WOULD WEAR HER EMBROIDERED DRESS AT SPECIAL EVENTS: “WHEN WE HAD SPECIAL – EVEN WHEN WE HAD HERITAGE DAY – I DRESS UP. CANADA DAY. AND THEN WE USED TO HAVE [CELEBRATIONS] IN THE GALT GARDEN, YOU KNOW, MUSIC, DANCE, BUT I WEAR IT. BUT NOT DANCING OKAY, JUST PUT IT ON. AND MANY, MANY TIMES I DID. AND WE HAD DINNER AND DANCE – I PUT IT ON.” .2 UNDER SKIRT: MARIA SAID THAT THIS UNDER SKIRT GAVE FULLNESS TO THE OUTFIT: "YOU HAVE TO HAVE A FULLNESS. BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE JUST TOO PLAIN. BUT WHEN YOU HAVE THIS SKIRT, IT’S KIND OF FULL, YOU CAN SEE, AND IT’S 100% COTTON, AND THAT GIVES YOU KIND OF MORE FULLNESS AND YOU CAN SEE THE BEAUTY OF THE PLEATED SKIRT." .6 CAP: MARIA SAID ONLY MARRIED WOMEN WOULD WEAR THIS TYPE OF CAP: "SO THE GIRLS WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG, THEY WEARING THIS OUTFIT, OKAY. BUT THEN THE WOMEN, IF THEY GOT MARRIED, THEY HAVE TO WEAR A CAP! SO WHOEVER SEE YOU, 'OH, SHE’S MARRIED.' AND, BUT DON’T YOU THINK SHE’S BEAUTIFUL?” .7 & .8: SHOES: MARIA INDICATED THAT THE SHOES WERE PURCHASED IN HUNGARY AND THAT SHE DID NOT DO THE EMBROIDERY ON THE TOE: "THAT’S HOW WE BOUGHT IN HUNGARY. THEY MADE IT OVER THERE. WE WENT IN HUNGARY WITH MY HUSBAND I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY PAIRS WE BOUGHT TO THE GIRLS. AND THE GIRLS, WHEN THEY WERE DANCING THEY HAVE ALL THE SAME PAIR OF DIFFERENT SIZES." MARIA BEGAN WORKING ON 16 DANCE OUTFITS IN 1977 AND IT TOOK HER “THREE-FOUR YEARS TO DO IT. BECAUSE YOU KNOW, I DESIGNED THE FLOWERS, AND THEN YOU KNOW THE EMBROIDERY, AND TO PUT IT TOGETHER WAS A VERY HARD JOB.” MAKING THE DANCE COSTUMES WAS IMPORTANT TO MARIA “BECAUSE [SHE] WAS PROUD OF BEING HUNGARIAN AND [SHE] WANTED TO SHOW SOMETHING DIFFERENT.” SHE LEARNED TO EMBROIDER AT THE AGE OF 12/13 FROM A NEIGHBOUR NAMED MARISSA IN HUNGARY. MARIA THINKS THAT MARISSA WAS ABOUT 25/26 YEARS OLD WHEN SHE TAUGHT MARIA HOW TO EMBROIDER. MARIA GETS A GREAT DEAL OF ENJOYMENT SEEING HER CREATIONS ON DANCERS WHILE THEY COMPETE: “VERY IMPORTANT. YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE ME. YOU PUT ALL ENERGY INTO IT TO BE ABLE TO FINISH IT AND THAT – BECAUSE HAPPINESS WAS WHEN THE GIRLS, THEY WAS DANCING ON A STAGE AND THEY’VE ALL GOT THE COSTUMES. YOU KNOW WHAT, WOW! YOU JUST CAN’T EX – I CAN’T EXPLAIN TO YOU.” MARIA GOT SOME OF HER PATTERNS FOR EMBROIDERY FROM THE EDMONTON HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY AND LATER RETURNED TO HUNGARY TO IMPROVE HER SKILLS, AS WELL AS TO LEARN HOW TO DO MACHINE EMBROIDERY. MARIA AND, AND HER HUSBAND, CHESTER, RETURNED TO HUNGARY ABOUT 3 TIMES, STAYING EACH TIME FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS SO THAT MARIA COULD IMPROVE HER SKILLS. IN ADDITION TO CREATING THE COSTUMES, MARIA ALSO CARED FOR THEM, ENSURING THEY WERE AVAILABLE WHEN A DANCER WOULD NEED TO WEAR THEM: “YES, I WAS IN CHARGE. DRY CLEANING, WASHING, AND EVERYTHING. I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY YEARS, LONG YEARS UNTIL WE MOVED AND THEN WE DIDN’T HAVE NO ROOM, AND THEN SOMEBODY ELSE, YOU KNOW. AND THEN WE HAD A MEETING AND THE DANCERS, THEY WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEBODY ELSE WHO WOULD TAKE CARE OF THEM, ‘CAUSE YOU SHOULD’VE SEEN THE GIRLS THEY WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW, “NO, MRS. JOKUTY, YOU TAKE GOOD CARE!” AND I DID.” ACCORDING TO CHESTER (GEZA) JOKUTY’S OBITUARY, CHESTER AND MARIA WERE MARRIED IN HUNGARY ON OCTOBER 3, 1949. CHESTER SERVED IN THE HUNGARIAN ARMY IN 1940, WAS TAKEN PRISONER BY THE RUSSIANS IN 1945, AND HELD PRISONER IN RUSSIA FOR THREE AND A HALF YEARS. IN THE BOOKLET “REMEMBRANCES OF OUR JOURNEY” MARIA INDICATES THAT CHESTER WAS NOT KEEN TO REMAIN IN HUNGARY FOLLOWING THE HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION, BECAUSE OF HIS TREATMENT AT THE HANDS OF THE RUSSIANS: CHESTER “SPENT THREE AND A HALF YEARS AS A P.O.W. IN ODESSA WHERE PRISONERS WERE USED AS SLAVE LABOUR. CHESTER WAS NOT A BIG MAN AND BECAUSE OF THE CONDITIONS, WAS EXTREMELY WEAK. DURING THIS TIME IF THE PRISONERS WERE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP OR DO WHAT WAS REQUIRED OF THEM, THE RUSSIAN GUARDS SENT THEIR DOGS IN TO FORCE THE PRISONERS TO MOVE. HE HAD WITNESSED SO MUCH DEATH AND SUFFERING AND HAD SUFFERED SO BADLY IN THE COLD, AT THE HANDS OF THE RUSSIAN SOLDIERS, HE VOWED NEVER TO BE TAKEN BY THEM AGAIN.” MARIA CONTINUED IN THIS BOOKLET TO RECOUNT THEIR DECISION TO LEAVE HUNGARY: “SO, ON NOVEMBER 4TH [1956], WE DECIDED WE WOULD LEAVE … SO WE GATHERED OUR FAMILY AND MY MOTHER AND BEGAN WALKING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE TOWARDS AUSTRIA – ONLY ABOUT AN HOUR’S WALK FROM WHERE WE LIVED.” THE JOKUTY FAMILY REMAINED IN AUSTRIA FOR 6 MONTHS, WHERE MARIA RECALLS BEING WELL TREATED. THEY LEFT AUSTRIA AND ARRIVED IN ST. JOHN, NB AFTER A 12 DAY CROSSING, ON APRIL 22, 1957. AFTER A LONG TRAIN RIDE, THEY ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE. SHORTLY AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL THEY BEGAN WORK AS FARM LABOURERS IN THE SUGAR BEET FIELDS. AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ON OCTOBER 29, 1979 HAD THE FOLLOWING TO SAY ABOUT THE HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION: “DESCRIBED SIMPLY, THE REVOLUTION ESTABLISHED A GOVERNMENT THAT TRIED TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE SOVIET UNION’S INFLUENCE. THE SOVIET UNION, SUBSEQUENTLY, SENT ARMED TROOPS INTO HUNGARY TO REASSERT ITS INFLUENCE. IN THE AFTERMATH, MANY PEOPLE FLED, ABOUT 37,000 TO CANADA ACCORDING TO FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND IMMIGRATION STATISTICS … CHESTER JOKUTY OF THE ASSOCIATION SAID ABOUT 2,000 PERSONS OF HUNGARIAN ORIGINS LIVE IN LETHBRIDGE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.” MARIA INDICATED SEVERAL TIMES THROUGH THE COURSE OF HER INTERVIEW THAT LIFE WAS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE JOKUTY FAMILY WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE. THE FAMILY’S FIRST ACCOMMODATIONS LEFT LITTLE TO BE DESIRED: “WE DIDN’T HAVE RUNNING WATER, TOILET, WE HAVE TO PULL THE WATER FROM THINGS, YOU KNOW, AND CHOP THE WOOD TO MAKE BREAKFAST. AND WINTERTIME, WE WAS SCARED TO DEATH THAT KIDS, WE’LL FREEZE TO DEATH. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO STAY UP, OR MY HUSBAND DID TO BE SURE THE WOOD, YOU KNOW THE STOVE IN THE KITCHEN – ONLY THING – THAT GIVE US A LITTLE BIT WARMTH. IT WAS VERY, VERY HARD.” MARIA RECALLS HAVING TO HITCH HIKE TO GET GROCERIES AND RELIED ON THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS TO GET HOME AGAIN: “AND NO CAR. YOU KNOW WHAT I DID? WE WAS SO HUNGRY, SO I SAID I HAVE TO TAKE A CHANCE. MY HUSBAND WAS WORKING AND KIDS WAS IN MCNALLY SCHOOL AND THEN I WENT ON THE ROAD, PUT MY HAND UP, AND WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED ... THEY DROP ME ON 5TH AVENUE SOMEWHERE, OR SAFEWAY, THEY DROP ME OVER THERE, BUT I HEARD THAT LOTS OF HUNGARIAN BACHELORS AND PEOPLE GO TO THE GARDEN HOTEL DRINKING BEER. SO WHEN I WENT OVER THERE, I COULDN’T SPEAK ENGLISH, SO THEN I LISTENED TO THE LANGUAGES WHERE I HEAR THE HUNGARIAN LANGUAGES. SO THEN I HEARD IT, AND I WENT AND I INTRODUCED MYSELF, WHO I AM, AND, “WE ARE ON THE SUGAR BEETS SOWING, WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP US? I NEED A GROCERY, WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP US …?” AND THEY FIND US SOMEBODY WHO WAS DRIVING, AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE NAME, WHAT THE NAME WAS, BECAUSE LONG TIME AGO, THEY GOT MY GROCERY IN THE CAR AND TOOK ME TO THE FARM FREE. CAN YOU IMAGINE? I WISH I COULD GIVE HIM A BIG HUG AND THANKFUL.” CHESTER’S OBITUARY INDICATES THAT HE “WAS A VERY PROUD HUNGARIAN AND A FOUNDING LIFETIME MEMBER OF THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA IN 1977 AND SERVED AS PRESIDENT FOR TEN YEARS. HE ALSO WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE SOUTHERN ALBERTA ETHNIC ASSOCIATION IN 1977.” IN A HERALD ARTICLE PUBLISHED ON NOVEMBER 14, 1989, MARGARET GUGYELKA (SECRETARY OF THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY) INDICATED THAT THE SOCIETY STARTED IN 1977: “’THERE WAS AN OLDTIMERS’ GROUP BEFORE THAT, BUT IT WAS MORE LIKE A FRATERNITY … THE SOCIETY WAS STARTED BY A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO CARRY ON HUNGARIAN TRADITIONS.’” AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 2, 1983 INDICATES THAT THE SOCIETY ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE WESTERN CANADIAN HUNGARIAN FOLK DANCE FESTIVAL. IN THE ARTICLE, CHESTER SAID THAT THE “FESTIVAL IS NOT A COMPETITION BUT RATHER AN EVENT DESIGNED TO KEEP CULTURAL HERITAGE ALIVE AND DANCE GROUPS IN TOUCH … JOKUTY SAYS HUNGARIAN DANCING HAS PROVEN ‘VERY, VERY POPULAR’ BECAUSE OF THE VARIETY OF DANCES – 46 IN ALL OF AT THE 1982 FESTIVAL HELD IN LETHBRIDGE – AND THE COLOURFUL COSTUMES UNIQUE TO EACH PROVINCE. THE COSTUMES HAVE PROVEN TO BE A BIG EXPENSE FOR THE SOCIETY SINCE ONE OUTFIT CAN COST UP TO $600 TO MAKE. MADE TO MEASURE BOOTS FROM MONTREAL ARE AS MUCH AS $150.” MARIA LAMENTS THAT THE SOCIETY ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE. SHE EXPLAINED THAT THERE SIMPLY ISN’T THE VOLUNTEER LABOUR FORCE TO CONTINUE DOING ALL THAT THE SOCIETY USED TO: “WHEN WE USED TO MAKE – EVERY YEAR BEFORE CHRISTMAS WE USED TO MAKE FOUR THOUSAND, FIVE THOUSAND CABBAGE ROLLS AND WE ADVERTISE, WE LET THE PEOPLE KNOW YOU HAVE TO PUT THE NAME AHEAD AND YOU HAVE TO COME PICK. ALL DAY WE WAS WORKING, BUT FIVE O’CLOCK, SIX O’CLOCK PEOPLE CAME AND TAKE [THE CABBAGE ROLLS] BECAUSE WE USED TO HAVE IT IN A BILL KERGAN CENTER, AND OVER THERE IS WALK-IN COLDER. BUT NOW, THIS YEAR [2015], NO CABBAGE ROLLS AND PEOPLE ARE DISAPPOINTED, BUT WE DON’T HAVE NO VOLUNTEERS. THIS JACKET WAS OWNED BY CHIEF OF POLICE (2006 TO PRESENT, 2011), TOM MCKENZIE OF THE LETHBRIDGE REGIONAL POLICE SERVICE (LRPS). ACCORDING TO INSPECTOR BILL KAYE, THIS TYPE OF COAT CAME INTO USE AROUND THE MID TO LATE 1990S. PRIOR TO THAT THEY WERE USING A NYLON PEA COAT. THIS TYPE OF COAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MORE VERSATILE SO IT COULD BE USED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE LIGHTER LAYERS COULD BE WORN DURING THE SPRING WHILE THE LAYERS COULD BE COMBINED TO MAKE A WARM COAT IN THE WINTER. THEY ARE STILL USING A SIMILAR TYPE OF COAT BUT IT IS MADE BY A DIFFERENT COMPANY WITH NEWER MATERIALS. TOM MCKENZIE BEGAN WORKING WITH THE LRPS IN 1976 AND WORKED HIS WAY UP THROUGH THE RANKS TO BECOME CHIEF OF POLICE IN 2006. HE SAID, "STARTING OUT AS A CONSTABLE YOU'RE FOCUSED ON GETTING OUT ON THE STREET AND WORKING AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY. AS YOU PROGRESS IN THAT YOU TAKE ON NEW CHALLENGES. THIS IS A TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO TAKE ON ANOTHER CHALLENGE... TO GIVE BACK AGAIN TO A COMMUNITY AND TO A SERVICE THAT HAS TREATED ME VERY WELL THROUGHOUT MY WHOLE CAREER. CARSCADDEN JOINED THE LETHBRIDGE POLICE IN 1997, AFTER WORKING WITH THE PEEL REGIONAL POLICE SERVICES IN THE GREATER TORONTO AREA FROM 1988 TO 1997. DURING HIS CAREER IN PEEL, CARSCADDEN RECEIVED SPECIAL TRAINING, INCLUDING COMPLETING THE FBI’S OBSERVER/SNIPER COURSE, WHICH INFORMED HIS APPLICATION AND ACCEPTANCE TO THE TACTICAL UNIT IN LETHBRIDGE. REGARDING THIS SHIRT, CARSCADDEN SAID: “THAT [IS FROM] THE PATROL WORLD… THEY HAD JUST SWITCHED A COUPLE OF MONTHS PRIOR [TO HIS JOINING THE FORCE], FROM THE LIGHT BLUE [SHIRTS] TO THE DARK BLUE… THE SHIRTS AVERAGED 2-3 YEARS [OF WEAR].” THIS SHIRT HAS THE LETHBRIDGE REGIONAL POLICE SHOULDER PATCH THAT WAS INTRODUCED IN DECEMBER 2004 TO REFLECT THE FORCE’S REGIONALIZATION TO INCLUDE COALDALE, AND IN 2015 CARSCADDEN SAID HE HAD BEEN WEARING IT JUST PRIOR TO STARTING THE DONATION PROCESS IN 2010. ON JULY 28, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED SGT. CARSCADDEN ABOUT HIS SERVICE WITH THE LRPS. CARSCADDEN SAID: ““[I STARTED OUT] IN PATROLS… I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN SOME OF THE THINGS THEY HAD IN THE TACTICAL WORLD, SO I APPLIED, AND WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET ON THEIR PART-TIME TACTICAL TEAM WITHIN LETHBRIDGE [FROM 1999 – 2012]… I WAS [ALSO] ASKED IF I COULD GO INTO THE COMMUNITY LIAISON UNIT, AND WHEN I WAS IN THAT UNIT WE HAD A NEW POLICE CHIEF [CHIEF MIDDLETON-HOPE] WHO HAD AN INTEREST IN EXPANDING SOME OF THE ROLES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE UNIT [SO WE FORMED] A DIVERSITY UNIT [IN 2003]… THAT HAD A HAND IN DEVELOPING [RELATIONSHIPS WITH] DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS IN YOUR COMMUNITY, AND HOW YOU CAN APPROACH THEM SO THEY CAN ASSIST YOU, AND VICE-VERSA FOR THEM IF THERE’S A NEED FOR HELP WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. SO I’M VERY PROUD OF THAT, AND THERE’S A COUPLE OF THINGS I WAS INVOLVED WITH IN THAT UNIT THAT WERE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING EXPERIENCES. THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT BEGAN IN 1975 WHEN THE KIWANIS CLUB DONATED THE FIRST VAN. ON AUGUST 1, 2007 – AFTER 32 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY – THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE. AT THAT POINT, THE ASSOCIATION HAD A FLEET OF 20 BUSES – MANY OF WHICH WERE DONATED BY LOCAL SERVICE CLUBS – THAT WERE ALL TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY. THE NAME OF THE SERVICE BECAME ACCESS-A-RIDE UNDER THE CITY’S MANAGEMENT. THESE ARTIFACTS WERE DONATED BY A LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBER, LYNN SPRING. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON APRIL 12, 2016 WITH SPRING. HE EXPLAINS, “I WAS A MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR HALF A DOZEN YEARS AT LEAST AND SOME OF THESE ITEMS WERE GIVEN TO ME BY THE DRIVERS. THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STARTED IN 1975 AND ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO, LETHBRIDGE HANDI BUS STOPPED THEIR CHARTER AS A NOT- FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION BECAUSE OF THE NATIONAL RULING IN TRANSPORTATION THAT MUNICIPALITIES WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCESSIBILITY RIDES, HANDICAP TRANSPORTATION. SO THE CITY TOOK OVER ALL OF THE BUSES, THEY PURCHASED THEM AND MOST OF THE DRIVERS WENT OVER TO THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE BECAUSE WE HAD, I BELIEVE, TWENTY-SIX AT THAT TIME AND YOU JUST DON’T JUST DON’T FIND TWENTY-SIX DRIVERS. THAT WAS PART OF THE AGREEMENT ON SALE THAT THEY WOULD TAKE THE BUSES. WE TOOK OUR PLATES OFF AND THE NEXT DAY CITY PUT THEIR PLATES ON AND THEIR INSURANCE. THE DRIVERS WENT OVER EVENTUALLY. THEY WERE WEARING THE CITY TRANSIT, LETHBRIDGE CITY TRANSIT UNIFORMS.” OF HIS TIME AS A BOARD MEMBER, SPRING SAID, “I CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN [2005]… THE MANAGER OF THE DAY, MURRAY CAMPBELL, WAS A LONGTIME FRIEND OF MINE AND HE ASKED ME [TO BE ON THE BOARD], AND I THOUGHT WELL IT IS A VERY WORTHWHILE ORGANIZATION. IT WAS A NOT-FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND DIDN’T INVOLVE A LOT OF HOURS.” SPRING WAS ON THE BOARD UNTIL 2011. SPRING REFERRED TO HIMSELF AS “A COLLECTOR AT HEART” AND AS A RESULT GATHERED THE DONATED ARTIFACTS DURING THE LAST DAYS OF THE LETHBRIDGE HANDI-BUS ASSOCIATION IN 2011. THEY WERE IN HIS POSSESSION FOR 5 TO 7 YEARS. HE EXPLAINS, “WELL I WAS ONE OF THREE THAT CLOSED DOWN AND CLOSED OUT HANDI BUS. WE HAD TO FILE WITH TAX CANADA AND OF COURSE, WORKERS COMP AND ALL THOSE THINGS SO FINALLY WE’RE AT THAT STAGE WHERE WE CAN GET RID OF A LOT OF THE PAPER RECORDS. IT PROMPTED THAT I SHOULD MAYBE DONATE THESE TO THE GALT MUSEUM FOR PROSPERITY… [T]HAT’S JUST MY NATURE, I GUESS, TO RETAIN THINGS AND SAY ‘WELL SOMEBODY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THIS IN A FUTURE DATE.’” SPRING WOULD HAVE WORN THIS SHIRT AS A BOARD MEMBER: ”WE WOULD WEAR THAT AT FUNDRAISERS AND DIFFERENT OCCASIONS LIKE THAT. THE ODD TIME AT THE BOARD MEETINGS, BUT MAINLY THE FUNDRAISERS, OR WHEN WE HAD MEDIA PEOPLE OR, SOME RECORDING OF THAT NATURE.” IT IS IDENTICAL TO THE SHIRTS WORN BY THE HANDI-BUS DRIVERS. SPRING DESCRIBES THE SHIRT’S DESIGN, “IT’S A DENIM SHIRT, AND OF COURSE A LOT OF OUR MATERIAL WAS FROM MARK’S WORK WAREHOUSE AS YOU SEE ON THE LABEL. THE JACKET HAS A HIGH COLLAR AND A GREY, PLASTIC ZIPPER DOWN THE FRONT. THERE ARE 5 METAL SNAP FASTENERS TO CLOSE THE JACKET IN ADDITION TO THE ZIPPER. THIS DESERT CAMOUFLAGE (ALSO KNOWN AS “CHOCOLATE CHIP” PATTERN) UNIFORM WAS WORN BY SERGEANT GEORGE CARSCADDEN DURING HIS SERVICE WITH THE LETHBRIDGE REGIONAL POLICE TACTICAL UNIT. CARSCADDEN JOINED THE LETHBRIDGE POLICE IN 1997, AFTER WORKING WITH THE PEEL REGIONAL POLICE SERVICES IN THE GREATER TORONTO AREA FROM 1988 TO 1997. DURING HIS CAREER IN PEEL, CARSCADDEN RECEIVED SPECIAL TRAINING, INCLUDING COMPLETING THE FBI’S OBSERVER/SNIPER COURSE, WHICH INFORMED HIS SERVICE WITH THE TACTICAL UNIT IN LETHBRIDGE FROM 1999 TO 2012. CARSCADDEN DESCRIBED HIS USE OF THIS UNIFORM AS SUCH: “THERE WERE A COUPLE OF CALLS WHERE I’VE WORN THAT UNIFORM… WHEN WE HAD BLACK, AND THAT WAS THE ONLY UNIFORM WE HAD, IN DAYTIME OPERATIONS YOU COULD SEE US LIKE FLIES IN SOUP. HAVING THIS TYPE OF UNIFORM MADE US MORE CONCEALABLE, AND THAT HELPS OUT IN DIFFERENT PLACES. THERE’S LOTS OF THINGS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY WHERE THIS WOULD BLEND IN, IN THE DAYTIME… OUR TERRAIN IS MORE SANDY, A MORE DESERT-STYLE ENVIRONMENT. WE DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TALL TREES. WE DON’T NEED TO HAVE URBAN CAMO. WE RAN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLOTHING THAT WE WERE COMPARING, AND THIS WAS THE BEST FOR WHAT OUR BACKGROUND WAS… IT’S ALL ABOUT IF WE CAN GET IN POSITION AND NOT BE EASILY OBSERVED. THAT PUTS YOURSELF AT LESS OF A RISK, AND THAT’S IMPORTANT FOR THE OFFICERS.” ON JULY 28, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED SGT. CARSCADDEN ABOUT HIS SERVICE WITH THE LRPS TACTICAL UNIT. CARSCADDEN SAID: “FIRST OF ALL, I JUST WENT AS A QUARRY… ALL DIFFERENT SPECIALTY UNITS THAT HAVE SOME KIND OF TACTICAL SCENARIO LIKE TO HAVE QUARRIES TO [HELP TRAIN THEM] TO DO THEIR JOB BETTER, SO I THOUGHT ‘I’LL GO WORK AS A QUARRY TO SHOW THEM I’M INTERESTED’. A QUARRY IS GENERALLY A BAD GUY – YOU PRETEND YOU’RE HIDING, OR MOVING OR YELLING OR RUNNING AWAY AND TRYING TO EVADE THEM, AND THEY ARE TRYING TO CAPTURE YOU… IT TOOK A COUPLE OF YEARS, BUT I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH… IN THE MOVEMENT OF THE TEAM THAT THERE WERE [POSITIONS OPEN]… THERE IS A PHYSICAL, AND INTERVIEW, SOME TESTS… I WENT THROUGH AND STUDIED, AND DID THE BEST THAT I COULD… MAKING SURE YOU ARE IN GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE BECAUSE YOU ARE CARRYING AN EXTRA 50 POUNDS OF GEAR… THAT’S JUST THE GEAR THAT YOU ARE CARRYING ON YOURSELF, NOT A RAM OR DIFFERENT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT THAT YOU MIGHT BE MOVING INTO PLACE FOR DIFFERENT TACTICS… I WAS AROUND 35 [YEARS OLD]. I WAS AN OLDER GUY APPLYING FOR THIS POSITION, BUT I WAS IN GOOD SHAPE AND HAD SOME GOOD EXPERIENCES THAT MADE ME COMPETITIVE, SO I DON’T THINK YOUR AGE TAKES YOU OUT OF THE EQUATION IF YOU ARE REALLY DETERMINED.” CARSCADDEN CONTINUED: “I’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT POSITIONS WITHIN [THE TACTICAL] UNIT… I STARTED OFF AS AN ASSAULTER… THE PERSON WHO CARRIES ALL THE GEAR, SO YOU’RE IN THE BACK… THE LAST PERSON THAT COMES IN. IT’S A GOOD POSITION TO START OFF WITH. IT MAKES IT SAFER FOR WHEN YOU’RE GOING INTO THESE HIGH-RISK ENVIRONMENTS… FROM THERE I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE OBSERVER, THEN A SNIPER, THEN FROM THERE… A BREECHER. SO YOU ARE BREECHING DOORS AND WINDOWS. [THEN] I WENT TO THE FRONT OF THE TACTICAL LINE-UP, WHICH IS THE SCOUT… THEN THE LAST SIX YEARS THAT I WAS ON THE TACTICAL TEAM, I WAS THE PERSON IN CHARGE, THE TEAM LEADER… AND I WAS RUNNING OPERATIONS IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR CANINE UNIT AND OUR EXPLOSIVES DISPOSAL UNIT… THE TRAINING IS REALLY GOOD. [THE TEAM] TRAINS EVERY TWO WEEKS, AND DO LOTS OF MOVEMENTS AND SHOOTING AND TACTICS. IT’S A PERISHABLE SKILL, THAT IF YOU DON’T REPEAT AND PRACTICE IT ALL THE TIME, IT DIMINISHES… PRACTICE IS IMPORTANT. IT ALLOWS YOU TO BE BETTER AT YOUR GAME... YOU NEED TO HAVE A MINDSET [OF] BEING NOT ONLY PHYSICALLY TOUGH, BUT MENTALLY TOUGH, WHEN YOU DEAL WITH THINGS IN A HIGH-RISK ENVIRONMENT… YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF DRIVE TO GET YOU THROUGH THINGS.” CARSCADDEN CONCLUDED: “ONE OF THE THINGS I’M PROUD OF ON THE TACTICAL SIDE IS THAT I WAS THE OFFICER WHO WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN BRINGING LESS LETHAL CAPABILITY TO THE TEAM… [WE] MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN SAVING SOMEBODY’S LIFE. THE COLLECTION OF OBJECTS BELONGING TO THE MEISSER FAMILY WAS DONATED BY JUDY WRIGHT, NIECE OF LOWELL MEISSER, WHO OPERATED A FARM OUTSIDE WARNER WITH HIS BROTHER ROME AS THE ‘MEISSER BROS’ FROM 1929 TO 1946. JUDY’S MOTHER WAS THE SISTER OF LOWELL’S WIFE ELINOR, AND SHE SPENT MUCH OF HER CHILDHOOD LIVING WITH THEM AND ROME MEISSER, DUE TO HER MOTHER BEING UNWELL. IN HER LATER ADULT LIFE, JUDY TOOK CARE OF “UNC” ROME AT HIS WATERTON RESIDENCE, AND BECAUSE ROME AND HIS BROTHER LOWELL DID NOT HAVE ANY LIVING DIRECT DESCENDANTS, JUDY WAS LEFT THE FAMILY BELONGINGS WHEN ROME DIED IN 2004. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ARTIFACT WAS EXTRACTED FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED WITH THE DONOR BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON NOVEMBER 14, 2013, AS WELL AS FROM A DOCUMENT WRITTEN BY HER AT THE TIME OF THE DONATION. WRIGHT SAID: “I CANNOT SPECIFICALLY REMEMBER [ROME] WEARING THESE COVERALLS BUT I JUST KNOW HE ALWAYS DID. HE WORKED IN THE SHOP; HE WORKED IN THE FIELD; HE WENT LOOKING AT HIS CROPS. HE ALWAYS WORE HIS COVERALLS. HIS CLOTHES WERE KEPT CLEAN, RIGHT UP UNTIL THE VERY END… HE WORKED. I CAME HOME WHEN HE WAS 96 OR SO AND HE WAS PAINTING THE HOUSE IN WATERTON HIS COVERALLS…HE WORE THEM AS HE STAINED THE COTTAGE AND THE GARAGE, AND PAINTED THE WINDOW AND DOOR FRAMES BRIGHT FIRE ENGINE RED. I WASN’T AROUND, BUT I’M SURE HE WAS IN HIS COVERALLS WHEN HE CUT THE GARAGE INTO TWO PARTS, MOVED ONE END BACK AND RE-BUILT THE MISSING SECTION SO THAT HIS NEW GOLD 1966 CADILLAC WOULD FIT… HE BARBECUED, MOSTLY, SOMETIMES IN HIS COVERALLS. HE WORKED AROUND THE YARD, AROUND WATERTON, HE PUT HIS COVERALLS ON IF HE MIGHT GET DIRTY. AND I JUST PICTURE HIM WORKING… YOU DIDN’T THROW ANYTHING AWAY, YOU FIXED IT. THERE WERE APPLIANCES THAT WERE RE-WIRED AND TAPED. EVERYTHING WAS FIXED BY HIM. YOU DIDN’T THROW ANYTHING AWAY AND IT WENT RIGHT TO WELDING AND EVERYTHING ELSE. HE COULD DO ANYTHING.” THE FOLLOWING BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM ROME MEISSER’S MANUSCRIPT ‘THE MEISSER’S AND OTHER RAMBLINGS’ AND DONATIONS OF FAMILY PAPERS MADE BY WRIGHT TO THE GALT ARCHIVES. THE MEISSER FAMILY PATRIARCH, MICHAEL MEISSER, WAS BORN IN SWITZERLAND IN 1830 AND IMMIGRATED TO ALMA, WISCONSIN IN 1846. HIS SON, JOHN LUTZI MEISSER MARRIED MARIE KINDSCHI ON APRIL 30, 1898 AND THEY MOVED TO WARNER, ALBERTA TO FARM IN 1910, LOOKING FOR A DRIER CLIMATE FOR MARIE, WHO SUFFERED FROM TUBERCULOSIS. THE COUPLE HAD FIVE CHILDREN: ORMA, LOWELL, JOHN (WHO DIED AT AGE TWO OF PNEUMONIA), ROME, AND MARIE. IN 1912, MOTHER MARIE DIED IN A TUBERCULOSIS CLINIC IN SALT LAKE CITY, AND FIVE YEARS LATER FATHER JOHN DIED FROM HEAD TRAUMA SUSTAINED IN A GRAIN ELEVATOR ACCIDENT. ONE OF THE CHILDREN’S PATERNAL AUNTS, FRENA, CAME TO WARNER TO HELP THEM WITH SCHOOLING AND RUNNING THE FARM. IN 1920, ORMA MARRIED LEE TENNEY AND IN 1926 LOWELL MARRIED ELINOR TENNEY, AND THE TWO COUPLES LOOKED AFTER THE TWO YOUNGER SIBLINGS UNTIL ORMA AND LEE MOVED TO CALIFORNIA IN 1931. THE YOUNGEST SISTER, MARIE, LATER JOINED THEM WITH HER SON JIM. LOWELL AND ROME FARMED TOGETHER FROM THE SEASON FOLLOWING THEIR FATHER’S DEATH (WHEN THEY WERE 17 AND 13 YEARS OLD, RESPECTIVELY) UNTIL 1945 WHEN THEIR LAND WAS DIVIDED FOR TAX BENEFIT. ROME NEVER MARRIED, AND IN 1928 HAD A SHORT STINT IN PILOT’S TRAINING BEFORE RETURNING TO FARMING PERMANENTLY. LOWELL AND ELINOR’S SON JERALD WAS BORN IN 1929. BY 1957 THE MEISSERS RETIRED FROM FARMING AND LEASED OUT THEIR LAND, AND IN 1958 THE FAMILY BOUGHT A CABIN IN WATERTON PARK, WHERE THEY SPENT ALL FOLLOWING SUMMERS. LOWELL AND ELINOR’S SON JERALD SPLIT HIS TIME BETWEEN FARMING IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA AND VARIOUS PROJECTS IN THE UNITED STATES. HE ENROLLED IN THE CATHOLIC SEMINARY IN SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, BUT PASSED AWAY IN 1990 BEFORE HE COULD BE ORDAINED. LOWELL DIED IN 1988, ELINOR FOLLOWED IN 1992, AND ROME PASSED AWAY IN 2004. THE FOLLOWING REMEMBRANCES OF ROME ‘UNC’ MEISSER WERE EXCERPTED FROM THE NOVEMBER 14, 2013 INTERVIEW WITH THE DONOR. WRIGHT SAID: “I LIVED WITH THEM AND WENT OUT TO THE FARM ALL SUMMER LONG EVERY YEAR FROM THE TIME I WAS FIVE OR SIX YEARS OLD… I JUST HONESTLY THINK THAT I AM WHO I AM TODAY BECAUSE OF MY UNCLE ROME. MY DAD WAS A STAUNCH OLD ENGLISHMAN AND HE COULDN’T RELATE TO ME. HE WAS 45 YEARS OLD WHEN I WAS BORN BUT HE COULDN’T RELATE TO ME. SO, MY UNCLE COULD… HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MARRIED WITH AT LEAST A DOZEN CHILDREN. IN HIS EARLY NINETIES, WHEN I FIRST GOT THERE [TO WATERTON] WE’D GO GROCERY SHOPPING. I’D HAVE TO WAIT WHILE HE STOPPED AND CHATTED WITH ALL THE CHILDREN HE’D COME ACROSS. HE SHOULD HAVE HAD LOTS OF KIDS. HE JUST LOVED KIDS AND I WAS A LITTLE KID… I WAS THERE FROM PRACTICALLY BIRTH AND LIVED MONTHS AT A TIME WITH HIM… HE COULD AFFORD TO LOOK AFTER THE COMMUNITY AS WELL… HE GAVE GENEROUSLY TO [COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS]. HE GAVE TO THE MILK RIVER HOSPITAL. HE DONATED $200,000 FOR THE HOCKEY GIRLS’ RESIDENCE. THEY HAD NO MONEY AND THAT’S WHY WE NOW HAVE A HOCKEY GIRLS’ RESIDENCE THAT HAS A HUGE KITCHEN AND HOUSES UP TO 25 GIRLS, AND KEEPS OUR WARNER SCHOOL OPEN. SO THAT IS A VERY BIG GIFT, HIS DONATIONS. THEY ALSO STARTED A MEISSER SCHOLARSHIP IN 1967 AND TWO WEEKS AGO I WENT OUT AND GAVE THE TROPHY AND THE MONEY TO THE LAST GIRL THAT WON IT. AND IT WILL GO ON INDEFINITELY AS LONG AS THERE’S A SCHOOL…HE WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF CHILDREN AND EDUCATION. THE SCHOLARSHIP, THE HOCKEY GIRLS, KEEPING THE WARNER SCHOOL OPEN - BIG FOCUS FOR HIM – WAS EDUCATION AND CHILDREN… HE WAS ONE OF THOSE KIND OF PRACTICALLY ANONYMOUS DONORS IN THE PAST. HOWEVER, AS HE GOT A LITTLE OLDER, I THINK HE ENJOYED THE ATTENTION. THEY MADE A BIG DEAL ABOUT THE HOCKEY SCHOOL. THE RESIDENCE HAS GOT, HUGE, IT HAS HIS NAME ON IT BUT I DON’T THINK HE SAW THAT. MADE OF FIRE RESISTANT MATERIAL AND MANUFACTURED ACCORDING TO NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION AGENCY (NFPA) AND CSA STANDARDS. THE CUFF IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF KEEPING DEBRIS AND THINGS OUT OF YOUR COAT AND IF YOU HAVE A COAT THAT TENDS TO RIDE UP YOUR ARM, IT’S NOT IDEAL, SO. JUST LITTLE THINGS THAT ADD UP TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE AFTER/AT THE END OF THE DAY. I JUST BASICALLY DO IT FOR FUN MORE SO, AND ALSO DO SOME COACHING, AND I’VE DONE THAT FOR ABOUT 25 YEARS. YOU KNOW I JUST, IT’S JUST A LOT OF FUN TO DO, SHOOTING, AND IT IS A VERY ENJOYABLE SPORT. ONE OF THE ONES THAT WE DON’T HAVE IS THAT THERE IS NO REAL STRUCTURE FOR IT, THERE’S NO REAL NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR IT, LIKE IPSIC, WHICH IS A WORLDWIDE ASSOCIATION, BUT THERE IS NO REAL ASSOCIATION BUT OUR 3 GUN MATCHES. ON OUR RANGE THERE ARE THREE GUN MATCHES WHERE OUR COMPETITOR IN THE SAME STAGE USES RIFLE, HANDGUN AND SHOTGUN—AND THOSE ARE EXTREMELY ENJOYABLE. IT GETS YOUR BLOOD PUMPING, IT GETS VERY EXCITING AND AT THE END YOU’RE OUT OF BREATH, YOU BARELY DID ANYTHING, BUT YOU HAVE BEEN HOLDING YOUR BREATH WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN PRESSING THE TRIGGER, YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING, YOU HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING, SO IT VERY MUCH ENGAGES YOU IN IT. SO IT’S A VERY ENGAGING SPORT, YOU CAN DO IT AT THE LEVEL THAT YOU WANT TO DO IT AT. PHYSICALLY IF YOU’RE NOT ABLE TO MOVE MUCH WELL THERE ARE SHOOTING SPORTS THAT YOU CAN DO, SET YOUR FIREARM ON THE TABLE AND DISCHARGE IT FROM THE TABLE AND YOU TRY AND SHOOT THE TIGHTEST GROUP POSSIBLE KIND OF THING. AND THAT’S GOOD, THAT’S A GREAT THING. OTHERS THAT ARE MORE ACTIVE CAN DO MORE, HAVE MORE OPTIONS IN TERMS OF THE SHOOTING SPORT. BUT THEY ARE LIFELONG SPORTS, THEY ARE THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS AND I’M A BIG FAN. I THINK THAT IT IS GREAT. ” WHEN ASKED ABOUT HIS TRAINING TO BECOME A COACH, FRIESEN RESPONDED BY SAYING, “BASICALLY JUST TAKING THE COURSES REQUIRED TO BE ABLE TO COMPETE, AND THEN JUST LOTS OF PRACTICE AND LEARNING BY GOING TO LOTS OF MATCHES AND LEARNING FROM OTHER COMPETITORS. FOR SHOOTING SPORTS, IT IS REALLY INTERESTING IN THAT THE COMPETITORS ARE QUITE WILLING TO GIVE YOU TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS IN TERMS OF MAKING YOU A BETTER SHOOTER. IT’S NOT LIKE OTHER SPORTS WHERE THEY ARE HOLDING THEIR SECRET WEAPON BACK. THEY ARE GOING TO SAY, HEY HAVE YOU EVER TRIED THIS, YOU SHOULD GIVE THAT A GO. ANYWAY, IT’S A MUCH MORE OF AN OPEN TYPE OF SPORTY IN THAT REGARD.” WHEN ASKED HOW A COACH MIGHT MOTIVATE A COMPETITOR FRIESEN SAID, “YOU KNOW I’M NOT REALLY SO MUCH TRYING TO GET THEM TO ENTER A COMPETITION. MY BIG GOAL IS THAT THEY BE SAFE FIRST OF ALL. SO THEY ARE SAFE, THAT’S OUR PRIMARY CONCERN. ONCE THEY ARE DOING THINGS SAFELY, THEN I WANT THEM TO HAVE SOME FUN DOING IT. THEN, IF THEY WANT TO COMPETE, THEN I WILL ENCOURAGE THEM TO COMPETE AND ASSIST THEM WITH THAT. THAT’S OUR PRIORITY, SAFETY FIRST, THEN FUN, THEN COMPETE IF THEY WISH TO DO THAT. SOME PEOPLE, WITH THE SHOOTING SPORTS, IT’S AN ACTIVITY WHICH YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE INVOLVED OR GO TO COMPETITIONS IF YOU DON’T WISH TO. SO IT’S A LIFELONG TYPE OF ACTIVITY. IT’S THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS, SO THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT REALLY APPEAL TO ME ABOUT IT. SO, THE COMPETITIONS, IF THEY WISH TO THAT FINE, IF THEY DON’T, THEN I TEACH THEM THE FUNDAMENTALS, SO THAT THEY CAN BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN DOING IT, THEN I’M HAPPY WITH THAT. WE HAVE SOME BASIC TYPE OF INSTRUCTION THAT WE DO. WE HAVE A CHECKLIST THAT WE FOLLOW, THAT THEY HAVE THE RIGHT ABILITIES AND SKILLS TO ENGAGE SAFELY. BUT AFTER THAT THERE IS A COURSE CALLED THE BLACK BADGE COURSE, AND THIS IS SPECIFICALLY FOR INTERNATIONAL PRACTICAL SHOOTING CONFEDERATION. SO THE BLACK BADGE COURSE IS ONE SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT SPORT. IT FOCUSES ON THE RULES OF THAT SPORT. IT’S A REQUIREMENT TO COMPLETE THAT COURSE AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A MATCH AFTER THAT COURSE IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN MATCHES. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BLACK BADGE IN ORDER TO COMPETE IN THEIR MATCHES. [THROUGH COACHING, I’VE HAD] A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK WITH A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY MUCH ENTHUSED ABOUT DOING WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THEIR PARENTS. THAT’S THE KIND OF A REQUIREMENT THAT WE HAVE. WE HAVE FOR OUR JUNIOR LEAGUE, THAT’S FOR OUR YOUTH, WE REQUIRE THAT THE ADULTS ALSO COME TO, AT LEAST THAT AN ADULT BE ON SITE WITH THEIR CHILDREN. SO IT’S JUST ENJOYABLE TO SHARE THE SPORT, TO LET OTHER PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT. ON FIRST BLUSH, IT LOOKS KIND OF UNUSUAL. I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO SHOOTING SPORTS, I HAD A FRIEND WHO TOLD ME ABOUT IT AND I SAID ‘OH MAN, THAT SOUNDS LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF MACHO BULLSHIT, I DON’T THINK I’M INTERESTED, BUT I SAID O.K., I’LL COME OUT AND TRY IT. IT’S JUST VERY ENJOYABLE. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY IT’S SO ENJOYABLE, BUT IT IS. THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE, IN TERMS OF RECOIL, THE SMOKE, AND THE NOISE, IT’S JUST A LOT OF FUN TO DO. [AS A VOLUNTEER COACH] I THINK THAT VOLUNTEERING IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. IT’S EXTREMELY GRATIFYING. I MEAN, YOU’RE MOTIVATION ISN’T TO DO IT BECAUSE YOU’RE GETTING PAID. I GET PAID DOING OTHER THINGS THAT’S A SATISFACTORY COMPENSATION FOR ME. I DON’T NEED MONEY FOR EVERYTHING THAT I DO, SO A CHUNK OF TIME THAT I HAVE AVAILABLE, I VOLUNTEER, AND I ENJOY DOING IT. [WORKING WITH PARENTS AND KIDS IN] THE SHOOTING SPORTS, [IS] DEFINITELY [ENJOYABLE]. YES IT IS, IT IS GOOD BECAUSE THE PARENTS, WE’RE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE. WE WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO DO IT SAFELY, AND THE PARENTS ARE CERTAINLY ON THE SAME SIDE IN TERMS OF THAT I MIGHT BE VERY ADAMANT WITH THE PARTICIPANT ABOUT KEEPING THEIR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER FOR AN EXAMPLE, AND I MIGHT HEAR THE PARENT SAYING THE SAME THING ‘OH, HEY, KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THAT TRIGGER’. I’LL SAY IT AND THE PARENT WILL JUMP IN AS WELL, SO THEY’RE ON THE SAME PAGE IN TERMS OF DOING IT. [THERE IS] CERTAINLY [A LOT OF RESPECT BETWEEN THE PARENTS AND THE COACH] AND THEY UNDERSTAND THE REASONS WHY THAT I MIGHT BE STRESSING POINTS BECAUSE THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF IT’S DONE SAFELY, IT’S A SPORT YOU CAN DO FOREVER, BUT IT HAS TO BE DONE SAFELY OR OF COURSE THERE IS SOME INHERENT DANGER IN IT.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT PRESSURES THAT MAY EXIST WITHIN THE SPORT, FRIESEN RELATED, “FOR THE COMPETITORS THERE IS FOR SURE IS. NO QUESTION. FOR ME, I’M COACHING, I TELL THEM THE RIGHT THINGS TO DO, AND IF THEY DO IT, THEN THAT’S O.K. AND IF THEY DO IT, THERE REALLY ISN’T MUCH PRESSURE, BUT THE PRESSURE CERTAINLY IS THERE. I MEAN ANY COMPETITION HAS PRESSURE INVOLVED WITH IT. THAT’S WHAT UPS THE ANTE ON IT, THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT IMPORTANT.” RESPONDING TO A QUESTION ABOUT WHAT HAS KEPT HIM INVOLVED FOR SO MANY YEARS, FRIESEN ANSWERED, “I ENJOY IT STILL, IT’S SOMETHING I CAN DO AND CAN ADD VALUE. IT’S STILL SOMETHING THAT IS AN EXCITING THING TO BE INVOLVED IN, SO YEAH. I’VE HAD SOME EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD DAYS WHERE I DID EXTREMELY WELL, AND ONE OF THOSE I WON THIS BIG HONKING ROBERT BATEMAN PRINT KIND OF A THING BECAUSE I WON MY CATEGORY AND THAT’S STILL SOMETHING THAT I HAVE AS A MEMENTO. AND I STILL HAVE SOME TARGETS THAT I FIRED THAT WERE EXTREMELY GOOD, YOU KNOW THEY’RE STICKING UP IN MY GARAGE AND I GIVE THOSE A LOOK ONCE IN AWHILE. AS AN ATHLETE, I GUESS, THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. AS A COACH, SOME GRATIFICATION WHEN YOU HAVE, SOME GENTLEMAN I JUST MENTIONED THAT IS A SPONSORED SHOOTER NOW, WELL THAT’S REALLY GRATIFYING. WE’VE HAD LOTS OF KIDS IN 4-H GROUPS, WELL THEY WEREN’T THERE FOR ANY COMPETITIVE PURPOSES, THEY WERE THERE TO LEARN THE SAFETY ASPECTS. AND SO NOW THEY COME BACK AND THEY ARE ADULTS NOW, AND THEY ARE SAYING “HOW CAN I, DO YOU NEED ME TO HELP, DO YOU NEED SOME VOLUNTEERS?” I MEAN THAT’S GREAT, THAT’S KEEPING IT MOVING KIND OF THING. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WERE MY MENTORS, MY COACHES, PEOPLE WHO HELPED ME WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. THOSE FOLKS ARE GOING ON TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE, SO IT’S A GREAT CYCLE.” RECALLING SOME OF THE CHALLENGES TO BEING A COACH AND SHOOTER, FRIESEN SAID, “SHOOTING SPORTS ARE VERY UNUSUAL IN THAT THE BASICS ARE VERY EASY TO MASTER, THEN ALL IT IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SHUT UP, STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND JUST DO IT. IF YOU OVER THINK IT, THAT’S WHEN THINGS GO AWRY. SO, IF YOU KIND OF HAVE A PLAN, YOU KNOW THE BASICS, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO, AND THEN AFTER THAT, AT THE POINT WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY ENGAGED IN IT, WHEN THE BUZZER BLOWS AND YOU BEGIN TO ENGAGE IN THOSE TARGETS, YOU DON’T THINK ABOUT IT. YOU HAD THE PLAN BEFORE, YOU KEEP YOUR MIND QUIET AND DO WHAT YOU’VE GOT TO DO AND THAT KIND OF THING, AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL. WHERE IT’S CHALLENGING IS WHEN YOU START TALKING TO YOURSELF TOO MUCH WHEN YOU’RE SHOOTING, THEN THE WHEELS FALL OFF IN A HURRY. [S]HOOTING IS THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS. I MEAN I CUT MY FINGER ONCE, MINOR THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT SHOOTING IS THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS. WHEN ASKED TO DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF SHOOTING, FRIESEN RECALLED, “HERE’S ONE OF THE STAGES FROM A 3 GUN MATCH THAT WE HAD THAT I RECALL. BASICALLY YOU START IT OFF IN A LITTLE CARD WE HAD IT ON AN INCLINE, THEN ON THE BUZZER, THEY HAVE CHECKED YOU ALL OVER AND MADE SURE YOU ARE READY TO GO, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE COURSE OF FIRE IS. SO THERE IS A RANGE OFFICER THAT IS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. AND THAT PERSON WOULD SAY ‘DO YOU KNOW THE COURSE OF FIRE AND IF YOU DO, LOAD AND MAKE READY’ SO YOU LOAD AND MAKE READY, AND YOU HAVE YOUR SHOTGUN ON THIS LITTLE CART THAT YOU ARE IN AND YOU HAVE YOUR PISTOL LOADED IN YOUR HOLSTER AND YOU HAVE YOUR RIFLE STAGE FURTHER DOWN RANGE. SO THEN IT WOULD BE ON THE BUZZER YOU HIT THIS RELEASE AND THE CART STARTS ROLLING DOWN THE RAMP AND AS AS IT DOES, THERE IS THESE CLAY PIGEONS THAT ARE ALL THE WAY DOWN THE SIDES AND YOU HAVE TO SHOOT AT THE CLAY PIGEONS ON EITHER SIDE AND GET OUT , EXIT THE CART, AND THEN THERE ARE SOME OTHER PIECES OF STEEL THAT YOU HAVE TO SHOOT WITH YOUR SHOTGUN AND THEN THE LAST ONE THAT YOU SHOOT TRIGGERS A BIRD THROWER, A CLAY PIGEON THROWER, AND IT FLINGS A BIRD UP IN THE AIR, AND YOU HAVE TO HIT THAT WHEN ITS GOING, AND THEN YOU HAVE TO UNLOAD AND SHOW THAT YOUR FIREARM IS CLEAR. THEN YOU MOVE TO THE NEXT STAGE WHERE YOU GRAB YOUR PISTOL THERE IS A BUNCH OF PAPER TARGETS, IT’S CALLED THE COOPER TUNNEL, A TUNNEL THAT YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH SO YOU HAVE TO CROUCH DOWN OR GO ON YOUR KNEES AND YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH LITTLE PORTS THAT YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH, AND SHOOT THROUGH THERE, AND THIS SIDE YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH. SO YOU GO THROUGH THIS WHOLE PROCESS THAT WAY, THEN WHEN YOU EXIT THERE ARE STILL A COUPLE TARGETS STILL FOR PISTOL AT THE END. THEN YOU HAVE TO UNLOAD, LOCK THE ACTION OF YOUR PISTOL, SET YOUR PISTOL DOWN AND A RANGE OFFICER SEES THAT YOU ARE ALL CLEAR AND THEN YOU GO TO YOUR RIFLE THAT WAS STAGED THERE. AND THEN THERE ARE SOME TARGETS AND THOSE TARGETS, ACTUALLY WE HAD THEM ON A BIANCHE MOVER, THAT IS ACTUALLY A PLATFORM THAT IS ON A CHAIN DRIVE THAT MOVES THE TARGETS ACROSS. AS ITS MOVING YOU HAVE TO GO AND FIRE AT THEM WITH YOUR RIFLE TO HIT THESE PIECES OF PAPER AS THEY ARE MOVING ACROSS IN FRONT OF YOU. [G]OING OUT ON NORMAL PRACTICE IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT, LIKE FOR THE SHOTGUN SHOOTERS, THEY’LL JUST HAVE A BIRD THROWER AND THEY WILL JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE BIRD, PRESSING THE TRIGGER AND FOLLOWING THE BIRD. FOR THE RIFLE SHOOTERS, TYPICALLY, THEY JUST WANT TO SHOOT THE TIGHTEST GROUP POSSIBLE. THAT MEANS THAT BASICALLY WHEN YOU FIRE, THE PROJECTILES END UP IN A SMALL AREA ALTOGETHER, OR IF PREFERRED, TOUCHING. THE PEOPLE WHO DO IT, THEY’LL SHOOT TARGETS AT 100,200 AND 300 YARDS. SO NOW FOR ME, I’M NOT A BIG CENTRE FIRE RIFLE SHOOTER, BUT I’M NOT BAD AT IT, WITH GOOD EQUIPMENT, I CAN SHOOT MAYBE A 5-INCH GROUP AT MAYBE 100 YARDS. SO 5 SHOTS AT 300 YARDS ARE ALL WITHIN THAT 5-INCH DIAMETER. THE PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY GOOD CAN SHOOT 5 SHOTS AT 300 YARDS AND CAN PUT THEM IN A MUCH TIGHTER AREA, SO THEY WOULD OBVIOUSLY WIN THAT COMPETITION OVER ME. IT’S VERY CONTROLLED, VERY METHODICAL. THEY WILL BE MONITORING THEIR BREATHING, THEY HAVE A SYSTEM FOR IT, THEY WILL DO LIKE “NOW I’LL TAKE 7 BREATHS AND AS I STOP, PRESS THE TRIGGER AND THEN GET PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ONE”. SOME OF THEM VERY MUCH HAVE A SYSTEM TOO THAT IS VERY METHODICAL AND OTHERS, HANDGUN SHOOTING—WHICH IS WHAT I DO MOSTLY, IT’S MOSTLY DRILLS- DRILLS IN TERMS OF DRAW, SHOOT, RELOAD. IT’S ALL IN TERMS OF FUNCTIONALITY AND RELOADING, AND BEING SAFE WITH THE DRAW AND GETTING THE HIT AS QUICK AS YOU CAN. THE PEOPLE THAT CAN DO IT DRAW AND HIT THE TARGET IN UNDER A SECOND. I’M PROBABLY 1.3 SECONDS, COMMONLY. THIS COSTUME WAS WORN BY WIM VONKEMAN DURING HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES OF THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB OF LETHBRIDGE. BORN IN THE NETHERLANDS IN 1929, VONKEMAN IMMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1981 WITH HIS WIFE TRUDY AND THEIR THREE CHILDREN, ANINE, ALWIN, AND HERWIN, SETTLING IN THE PICTURE BUTTE AREA. VONKEMAN WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB, AND WAS ACTIVE WITH THE GROUP UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 2004. ON JANUARY 21, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, TRUDY VONKEMAN, ABOUT THIS COSTUME AND HER HUSBAND WIM’S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB OF LETHBRIDGE. SHE SAID: “MY HUSBAND’S FAMILY WENT [TO CANADA] IN 1952 – HE WAS THE ELDEST SON AND HAD A NICE JOB IN HOLLAND SO HE STAYED BEHIND. THEN WE MET AND MARRIED AND HAD KIDS, AND IN 1979 WE WENT ON HOLIDAYS [IN CANADA] WITH THE KIDS FOR FOUR WEEKS… THEY ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH AND WHEN WE WERE BACK IN HOLLAND I HEARD MY TWO SONS [SAYING] ‘AFTER SCHOOL WE GO TO CANADA’… I SAID TO MY HUSBAND, ‘LET’S GO THEN AS A FAMILY, I DON’T WENT TO SPLIT THE FAMILY LATER’… THERE WAS A BIG FAMILY WAITING [IN CANADA] AND MY PARENTS DIED [IN 1979 AND 1980] SO THERE WAS NO REASON NOT TO DO IT [WHILE] WE WERE STILL YOUNG ENOUGH. I WAS 47 AND MY HUSBAND WAS 51, BUT STILL WE MADE IT. THE WHOLE FAMILY LOOKED AFTER US [AND] THERE WAS A JOB ON THE FARM [OUTSIDE PICTURE BUTTE]... WE DIDN’T NEED TO IMMIGRATE BECAUSE IT WAS EVEN BETTER IN HOLLAND THAN WHEN WE CAME HERE. STILL, ONE OF THE LAST THINGS MY HUSBAND SAID TO ME [WAS] ‘WE HAD LESS MONEY HERE IN CANADA BUT I’M GLAD WE WENT.’” VONKEMAN CONTINUED: “IN HOLLAND, THE CHURCH WHERE I BELONGED TO, THE WOMEN WERE PASTORS. HERE, NOT. AND I STOPPED GOING WHEN… THERE WAS SOMETHING THE MEN HAD TO DECIDE AND THE WOMEN COULD [ONLY] GO TO THE KITCHEN AND MAKE COFFEE. I WAS SO MAD [I DECIDED] I’M NOT GOING ANYMORE… [BUT WIM], HIS BACKGROUND, WE DUTCH PEOPLE DO SOMETHING TOGETHER… HE WANTED TO BE ACTIVE TO SHOW SOMETHING ABOUT WHERE HE COMES FROM… HE MET SOME OTHER DUTCH PEOPLE [AND] SET UP THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB… HE STARTED WITH DICK VAN GROOTHEEST AND HERMAN SIEMENS AND HE TOOK THE INITIATIVE… HE WANTED TO ORGANIZE AND DO STUFF. HE WAS NOT ONE TO SIT AROUND AND READ A BOOK… HE WAS ALWAYS BUSY AND TRYING TO FIND NEW THINGS [FOR THE CLUB] TO DO… I WAS IN THE BACKGROUND, HELPING WITH THE ORGANIZING AND HELPING HIM THINK ABOUT THINGS… WIM STARTED [THE CLUB’S] MAGAZINE, ‘VAN DE HAK OP DE TAK’ [ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO ‘DOWN THE GRAPE VINE’]… THE CLUB HAD A FOLK DANCE GROUP AND THEY HAD THIS SUIT FOR IT. [THE DESIGN] IS FROM A CERTAIN PART OF HOLLAND [CALLED] VOLENDAM… A LITTLE FISHER TOWN WHERE ALL THE MEN WORE THIS IN THE PAST… [THE CLUB’S DANCE GROUP] WENT AROUND AND DANCED IN OLD FOLKS HOMES… AND THEY HAD A CHOIR TOO, ALL DRESSED UP IN VOLENDAM COSTUMES, SINGING ON DIFFERENT EVENINGS… YOU HAVE EVENINGS WHERE YOU DANCE AND YOU HAVE A MEAL, AND DRINK A GLASS OF WINE, AND HAVE FUN.” ON JUNE 24, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED WIM VONKEMAN’S DAUGHTER, ANINE. SHE SAID: “AFTER MY DAD PASSED AWAY, WE HAD [THE COSTUME] DRY-CLEANED… AND I COULDN’T GET RID OF IT. IT HAD TO GO BACK TO THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB, TO THE DANCERS, SO THAT SOMEONE ELSE COULD WEAR IT. MY DAD WAS PRETTY SHORT, AND IT WAS A SPECIFIC SIZE FOR HIM [AND] IT WAS PART OF HIM, SO I JUST COULDN’T GET RID OF IT… WHEN I KEPT IT, I KNEW THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO KEEP IT MYSELF FOREVER, AND THAT IT SHOULD GO INTO THE MUSEUM… BECAUSE MY DAD HELPED ESTABLISH THE DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB… IT SUCH A BIG PART OF THE WHOLE LETHBRIDGE STORY… HE SET UP THE ASSOCIATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER PEOPLE, IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN A CONNECTION BETWEEN DUTCH CANADIANS, AND KEEP SOME TRADITIONS GOING, OR BRING SOME NEW TALENTS. AND HE DID A LOT OF STUFF CROSS-CULTURALLY WITH CANADIANS AND DUTCH PEOPLE, BRINGING CHOIRS AND DANCERS OVER FROM HOLLAND, DOING STUFF IN THE STATES WITH OTHER DUTCH ASSOCIATIONS, AND JUST TRYING TO CONNECT PEOPLE… THERE ARE MANY RURAL DUTCH-CANADIANS – FARMERS, FARMERS’ FAMILIES – BUT THERE’S ALSO LOTS OF PEOPLE IN LETHBRIDGE AND SMALLER COMMUNITIES. BUT THEY ASSOCIATE THROUGH CHURCHES, I THINK… AND MY MOM AND DAD LEFT THE CHURCH [SO] THAT COMMUNITY, FOR THEM, WAS NOT THERE. THESE KNEE PADS WERE USED BY SERGEANT GEORGE CARSCADDEN DURING HIS SERVICE WITH THE LETHBRIDGE REGIONAL POLICE TACTICAL UNIT FROM 1999 TO 2012. CARSCADDEN JOINED THE LETHBRIDGE POLICE IN 1997, AFTER WORKING WITH THE PEEL REGIONAL POLICE SERVICES IN THE GREATER TORONTO AREA FROM 1988 TO 1997. DURING HIS CAREER IN PEEL, CARSCADDEN RECEIVED SPECIAL TRAINING, INCLUDING COMPLETING THE FBI’S OBSERVER/SNIPER COURSE, WHICH INFORMED HIS APPLICATION AND ACCEPTANCE TO THE TACTICAL UNIT IN LETHBRIDGE. CARSCADDEN DESCRIBED HIS USE OF THESE KNEE PADS AS SUCH: “I PUT THEM ON AND I WEAR THEM UNDERNEATH MY PANTS… THEY PROTECT YOUR KNEES. IF YOU’RE ON AN UNSTABLE PLATFORM, YOU NEED YOUR KNEES. AND THE MORE PROTECTION WE CAN MAKE FOR OURSELVES, THE LONGER YOU CAN LAST IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS… THESE ONES I BOUGHT AT THE SKATEBOARD SHOP… NOW, THEY HAVE [PROPER] TACTICAL KNEEPADS. THAT’S THE CHANGE THAT I’VE SEEN WITH GEAR AND EQUIPMENT. IT’S GOT MORE SPECIALIZED AND PURPOSEFUL FOR THE OFFICER.” ON JULY 28, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED SGT. CARSCADDEN ABOUT HIS SERVICE WITH THE LRPS TACTICAL UNIT. CARSCADDEN SAID: “FIRST OF ALL, I JUST WENT AS A QUARRY… ALL DIFFERENT SPECIALTY UNITS THAT HAVE SOME KIND OF TACTICAL SCENARIO LIKE TO HAVE QUARRIES TO [HELP TRAIN THEM] TO DO THEIR JOB BETTER, SO I THOUGHT ‘I’LL GO WORK AS A QUARRY TO SHOW THEM I’M INTERESTED’. A QUARRY IS GENERALLY A BAD GUY – YOU PRETEND YOU’RE HIDING, OR MOVING OR YELLING OR RUNNING AWAY AND TRYING TO EVADE THEM, AND THEY ARE TRYING TO CAPTURE YOU… IT TOOK A COUPLE OF YEARS, BUT I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH… IN THE MOVEMENT OF THE TEAM THAT THERE WERE [POSITIONS OPEN]… THERE IS A PHYSICAL, AND INTERVIEW, SOME TESTS… I WENT THROUGH AND STUDIED, AND DID THE BEST THAT I COULD… MAKING SURE YOU ARE IN GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE BECAUSE YOU ARE CARRYING AN EXTRA 50 POUNDS OF GEAR… THAT’S JUST THE GEAR THAT YOU ARE CARRYING ON YOURSELF, NOT A RAM OR DIFFERENT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT THAT YOU MIGHT BE MOVING INTO PLACE FOR DIFFERENT TACTICS… I WAS AROUND 35 [YEARS OLD]. I WAS AN OLDER GUY APPLYING FOR THIS POSITION, BUT I WAS IN GOOD SHAPE AND HAD SOME GOOD EXPERIENCES THAT MADE ME COMPETITIVE, SO I DON’T THINK YOUR AGE TAKES YOU OUT OF THE EQUATION IF YOU ARE REALLY DETERMINED.” CARSCADDEN CONTINUED: “I’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT POSITIONS WITHIN [THE TACTICAL] UNIT… I STARTED OFF AS AN ASSAULTER… THE PERSON WHO CARRIES ALL THE GEAR, SO YOU’RE IN THE BACK… THE LAST PERSON THAT COMES IN. IT’S A GOOD POSITION TO START OFF WITH. IT MAKES IT SAFER FOR WHEN YOU’RE GOING INTO THESE HIGH-RISK ENVIRONMENTS… FROM THERE I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE OBSERVER, THEN A SNIPER, THEN FROM THERE… A BREECHER. SO YOU ARE BREECHING DOORS AND WINDOWS. [THEN] I WENT TO THE FRONT OF THE TACTICAL LINE-UP, WHICH IS THE SCOUT… THEN THE LAST SIX YEARS THAT I WAS ON THE TACTICAL TEAM, I WAS THE PERSON IN CHARGE, THE TEAM LEADER… AND I WAS RUNNING OPERATIONS IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR CANINE UNIT AND OUR EXPLOSIVES DISPOSAL UNIT… THE TRAINING IS REALLY GOOD. [THE TEAM] TRAINS EVERY TWO WEEKS, AND DO LOTS OF MOVEMENTS AND SHOOTING AND TACTICS. IT’S A PERISHABLE SKILL, THAT IF YOU DON’T REPEAT AND PRACTICE IT ALL THE TIME, IT DIMINISHES… PRACTICE IS IMPORTANT. IT ALLOWS YOU TO BE BETTER AT YOUR GAME... YOU NEED TO HAVE A MINDSET [OF] BEING NOT ONLY PHYSICALLY TOUGH, BUT MENTALLY TOUGH, WHEN YOU DEAL WITH THINGS IN A HIGH-RISK ENVIRONMENT… YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF DRIVE TO GET YOU THROUGH THINGS.” CARSCADDEN CONCLUDED: “ONE OF THE THINGS I’M PROUD OF ON THE TACTICAL SIDE IS THAT I WAS THE OFFICER WHO WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN BRINGING LESS LETHAL CAPABILITY TO THE TEAM… [WE] MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN SAVING SOMEBODY’S LIFE. WE HELP THEM THROUGH THAT TIME OF NEED… WE HAVE ESTABLISHED WHERE, IN THE PAST IF THAT PERSON COULD HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN SHOT AND INJURED, IF NOT FATALLY SHOT, THAT PERSON NOW CAN BE DEALT WITH A LESS LETHAL MEANS… WE ARE ABLE TO RESTRAIN, ARREST, WITH THESE LESS LETHAL CAPABILITIES. THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE FOR THEM… THE EXPERIENCES THAT I HAD IN PEEL [SHOWED ME LESS LETHAL CAPABILITIES] IN OPERATION AND HOW IT WORKED… THEY WERE ONE OF THE FIRST SERVICES IN CANADA TO HAVE THE RUBBER BULLET… WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AT DIFFERENT TACTICS AND HOW YOU CAN DO IT BETTER, THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I RECOGNIZED, THAT [LETHBRIDGE] COULD BRING THIS ON. IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR OUR TEAM AND OUR COMMUNITY: AS OPPOSED TO SHOOTING SOMEBODY AND STOPPING THEM THAT WAY, WE COULD USE THE [RUBBER BULLET] OR BEANBAG ROUND AND THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO HELP STOP THESE PEOPLE [BUT] SAVE THEIR LIVES… IT REALLY OPENS PEOPLE’S EYES WHEN THEY SEE THAT THERE’S A LOT OF OTHER RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO PUT IN PLACE FOR DIFFERENT TACTICS.
