THE ABOA (ALBERTA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION) EMBROIDERED CREST ON THE SHIRT’S SLEEVE CAME INTO EXISTENCE APPROXIMATELY TEN YEARS AGO IN 2002 WHEN FEBA RULES WERE BROUGHT INTO FORCE. CHANGES IN INSIGNIA OR EVEN THE POST-FEBA INTRODUCTION OF STRIPPED SHIRTS ENABLE THE SHIRT’S DATING. THE SHIRT WAS WORN IN THE PAST YEAR ALBEIT IN VERY LIMITED (LOCAL) CIRCUMSTANCES DUE TO THE ABOA CREST’S DISCONTINUATION ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO. THE ISSUE AROSE THAT THE WEARER’S IDENTIFICATION WITH A PROVINCE (AKA. ALBERTA) MAY LEAD SOME TO CHALLENGE HIS/HER IMPARTIALITY (AKA. CALLS BENEFICIAL TO SAME PROVINCE’S TEAM).” THE SHIRT WAS WORN ACROSS SOUTHERN ALBERTA, RANGING IN COMMUNITIES FROM NANTON (NORTH) AND MILK RIVER (SOUTH) TO THE CROWSNEST PASS (WEST) AND MEDICINE HAT (EAST). HALMA AND OTHER OFFICIALS ORDERED THEIR APPAREL WHOLESALE THROUGH THE SOUTHERN ALBERTA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION, BASED OUT OF THE ASSOCIATION’S TREASURER’S HOME. THE ASSOCIATION SOURCED THE SHIRTS IN BULK FROM DISTRIBUTORS SUCH AS REFEREES.COM. BELONGED TO GRANDFATHER OF DONOR, ALBERT ARNOLD, WHO WORKED FOR CITY OF LETHBRIDGE PARKS DEPARTMENT AND WAS KILLED JULY 30, 1924 WHEN HE FELL FROM A TREE AND HIT CEMENT. VEST MADE BY HIS WIFE, AND WORN AS HE REFEREED FOOTBALL. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT RUTHANN LABLANCE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF CLOTHING, INCLUDING A VEST DONATED BY GLADYS CLAY. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD AND A FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MARTIN BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME. GLADYS CLAY WAS RAISED ON A FARM OUTSIDE OF LETHBRIDGE AND ATTENDED SCHOOL IN A ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE IN CRYSTAL LAKE. AT THE AGE OF 14 SHE WAS SENT TO LETHBRIDGE TO LIVE WITH HER GRANDMOTHER SO THAT SHE COULD ATTEND LETHBRIDGE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE. ON NOVEMBER 17, 1945 GLADYS WAS MARRIED TO DONALD “DON” CLAY. GLADYS WAS THE DAUGHTER OF OSCAR WILLETS AND ALICE LUCY EMILY WILLETS (NEE ARNOLD). GLADYS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 93 ON FEBRUARY 14, 2014. HER HUSBAND DON CLAY PASSED AWAY ON NOVEMBER 8, 2008 AT THE AGE OF 93. OSCAR WILLETS WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ENGLAND, MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910. IN 1915 HE JOINED THE 39TH BATTALION AND SERVED OVERSEAS DURING WWI. HE WORKED AS A MINER AT NO. 6 MINE FOLLOWING THE WAR, THEN AS A FARMER IN THE SUNNYSIDE DISTRICT STARTING IN 1926. HE RETIRED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1954. OSCAR PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 83 ON MARCH 22, 1975. ALICE LUCY EMILY WILLETS (NEE ARNOLD) WAS BORN AND RAISED IN LONDON, ENGLAND, AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910. ALICE WAS MARRIED TO OSCAR WILLETS ON SEPTEMBER 30, 1919. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ALBERT ARNOLD AND ALICE MATILDA ARNOLD (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). ALICE WILLETS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 85 ON AUGUST 26, 1982. ALICE MATILDA ARNOLD (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN) WAS BORN IN HAVERSHAM, KENT, ENGLAND AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910. SHE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 82 IN AUGUST 1957. ALBERT ARNOLD PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 50. AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE HERALD ON JULY 31, 1924 RECOUNTS THE ACCIDENT THAT CAUSED HIS DEATH: “THE DEATH OF ALBERT ARNOLD … AN EMPLOYEE OF THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, OCCURRED LAST NIGHT AT 9:45 AT THE GALT HOSPITAL. MR. ARNOLD WAS ENGAGED IN TRIMMING TREES IN FRONT OF 649 12TH ST., WHEN HE FELL FROM THE LADDER ON WHICH HE WAS WORKING AND STRUCK THE SIDEWALK WITH HIS HEAD, BEING RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS, FROM WHICH STATE HE NEVER EMERGED. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE GALT HOSPITAL WHERE AN EXAMINATION REVEALED A SLIGHT FRACTURE OF THE SKULL. HE WAS OPERATED ON IN THE AFTERNOON IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF HIS BRAIN CAUSED BY THE FRACTURE, BUT WITHOUT SUCCESS, AND HE DIED AT 9:45PM. MR. ARNOLD, WHO WAS FIFTY YEARS OF AGE, HAD BEEN IN THE CITY THIRTEEN YEARS AND HAD BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT ON AND OFF FOR SEVERAL YEARS. ONLY THE DAY BEFORE HE HAD CELEBRATED THE THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS MARRIAGE.” ANOTHER ARTICLE FROM AUGUST 1, 1924 DISCUSSES THE ACCIDENT FURTHER: “AT AN ENQUIRY HELD ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON BEFORE MAGISTRATE BARKER AS TO WHETHER AN INQUEST ON THE DEATH OF ALBERT ARNOLD WOULD BE NECESSARY, THE MAGISTRATE DECIDED THAT IT WAS A CASE OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH. ACCORDING TO THE EVIDENCE GIVEN, DECEASED ON HAD A 13 FOOT FALL FROM THE POINT OF THE LADDER ON WHICH HE WAS STANDING AT THE TIME HE WAS CUTTING TREES ON TWELFTH ST. SOUTH. GEORGE EDWARDS, WHO WAS HOLDING THE LADDER FOR THE DECEASED, DEPOSED TO HIS HAVING A STRONG GRIP ON IT AND TO ITS NOT SLIPPING. THE DECEASED WAS PRUNING OFF THE LIGHT BRANCHES WITH A PRUNING HOOK AND WAS NOT USING A SAW. ANYTHING OF THE THEORY OF HIS BEING ELECTROCUTED BY THE ELECTRIC WIRES WAS DISSIPATED BY THE EVIDENCE OF ED THEOBALD OF THE CITY ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT, WHO SAID THAT THE WIRE WAS AWAY ABOVE THE TOP OF THE TREE. IT IS PRESUMED THAT DECEASED, WHO HAD NOT BEEN VERY WELL LATELY, HAD A SUDDEN FIT OF VERTIGO. THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WAS ORIGINALLY FROM VANCOUVER BUT MOVED TO COALDALE FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN THEY WERE INTERNED AT SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. I JUST BASICALLY DO IT FOR FUN MORE SO, AND ALSO DO SOME COACHING, AND I’VE DONE THAT FOR ABOUT 25 YEARS. YOU KNOW I JUST, IT’S JUST A LOT OF FUN TO DO, SHOOTING, AND IT IS A VERY ENJOYABLE SPORT. ONE OF THE ONES THAT WE DON’T HAVE IS THAT THERE IS NO REAL STRUCTURE FOR IT, THERE’S NO REAL NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR IT, LIKE IPSIC, WHICH IS A WORLDWIDE ASSOCIATION, BUT THERE IS NO REAL ASSOCIATION BUT OUR 3 GUN MATCHES. ON OUR RANGE THERE ARE THREE GUN MATCHES WHERE OUR COMPETITOR IN THE SAME STAGE USES RIFLE, HANDGUN AND SHOTGUN—AND THOSE ARE EXTREMELY ENJOYABLE. IT GETS YOUR BLOOD PUMPING, IT GETS VERY EXCITING AND AT THE END YOU’RE OUT OF BREATH, YOU BARELY DID ANYTHING, BUT YOU HAVE BEEN HOLDING YOUR BREATH WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN PRESSING THE TRIGGER, YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING, YOU HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING, SO IT VERY MUCH ENGAGES YOU IN IT. SO IT’S A VERY ENGAGING SPORT, YOU CAN DO IT AT THE LEVEL THAT YOU WANT TO DO IT AT. PHYSICALLY IF YOU’RE NOT ABLE TO MOVE MUCH WELL THERE ARE SHOOTING SPORTS THAT YOU CAN DO, SET YOUR FIREARM ON THE TABLE AND DISCHARGE IT FROM THE TABLE AND YOU TRY AND SHOOT THE TIGHTEST GROUP POSSIBLE KIND OF THING. AND THAT’S GOOD, THAT’S A GREAT THING. OTHERS THAT ARE MORE ACTIVE CAN DO MORE, HAVE MORE OPTIONS IN TERMS OF THE SHOOTING SPORT. BUT THEY ARE LIFELONG SPORTS, THEY ARE THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS AND I’M A BIG FAN. I THINK THAT IT IS GREAT. ” WHEN ASKED ABOUT HIS TRAINING TO BECOME A COACH, FRIESEN RESPONDED BY SAYING, “BASICALLY JUST TAKING THE COURSES REQUIRED TO BE ABLE TO COMPETE, AND THEN JUST LOTS OF PRACTICE AND LEARNING BY GOING TO LOTS OF MATCHES AND LEARNING FROM OTHER COMPETITORS. FOR SHOOTING SPORTS, IT IS REALLY INTERESTING IN THAT THE COMPETITORS ARE QUITE WILLING TO GIVE YOU TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS IN TERMS OF MAKING YOU A BETTER SHOOTER. IT’S NOT LIKE OTHER SPORTS WHERE THEY ARE HOLDING THEIR SECRET WEAPON BACK. THEY ARE GOING TO SAY, HEY HAVE YOU EVER TRIED THIS, YOU SHOULD GIVE THAT A GO. ANYWAY, IT’S A MUCH MORE OF AN OPEN TYPE OF SPORTY IN THAT REGARD.” WHEN ASKED HOW A COACH MIGHT MOTIVATE A COMPETITOR FRIESEN SAID, “YOU KNOW I’M NOT REALLY SO MUCH TRYING TO GET THEM TO ENTER A COMPETITION. MY BIG GOAL IS THAT THEY BE SAFE FIRST OF ALL. SO THEY ARE SAFE, THAT’S OUR PRIMARY CONCERN. ONCE THEY ARE DOING THINGS SAFELY, THEN I WANT THEM TO HAVE SOME FUN DOING IT. THEN, IF THEY WANT TO COMPETE, THEN I WILL ENCOURAGE THEM TO COMPETE AND ASSIST THEM WITH THAT. THAT’S OUR PRIORITY, SAFETY FIRST, THEN FUN, THEN COMPETE IF THEY WISH TO DO THAT. SOME PEOPLE, WITH THE SHOOTING SPORTS, IT’S AN ACTIVITY WHICH YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE INVOLVED OR GO TO COMPETITIONS IF YOU DON’T WISH TO. SO IT’S A LIFELONG TYPE OF ACTIVITY. IT’S THE SAFEST SPORT THERE IS, SO THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT REALLY APPEAL TO ME ABOUT IT. SO, THE COMPETITIONS, IF THEY WISH TO THAT FINE, IF THEY DON’T, THEN I TEACH THEM THE FUNDAMENTALS, SO THAT THEY CAN BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN DOING IT, THEN I’M HAPPY WITH THAT. WE HAVE SOME BASIC TYPE OF INSTRUCTION THAT WE DO. WE HAVE A CHECKLIST THAT WE FOLLOW, THAT THEY HAVE THE RIGHT ABILITIES AND SKILLS TO ENGAGE SAFELY. BUT AFTER THAT THERE IS A COURSE CALLED THE BLACK BADGE COURSE, AND THIS IS SPECIFICALLY FOR INTERNATIONAL PRACTICAL SHOOTING CONFEDERATION. SO THE BLACK BADGE COURSE IS ONE SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT SPORT. IT FOCUSES ON THE RULES OF THAT SPORT. IT’S A REQUIREMENT TO COMPLETE THAT COURSE AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A MATCH AFTER THAT COURSE IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN MATCHES. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BLACK BADGE IN ORDER TO COMPETE IN THEIR MATCHES. [THROUGH COACHING, I’VE HAD] A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK WITH A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY MUCH ENTHUSED ABOUT DOING WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THEIR PARENTS. THAT’S THE KIND OF A REQUIREMENT THAT WE HAVE. WE HAVE FOR OUR JUNIOR LEAGUE, THAT’S FOR OUR YOUTH, WE REQUIRE THAT THE ADULTS ALSO COME TO, AT LEAST THAT AN ADULT BE ON SITE WITH THEIR CHILDREN. SO IT’S JUST ENJOYABLE TO SHARE THE SPORT, TO LET OTHER PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT. ON FIRST BLUSH, IT LOOKS KIND OF UNUSUAL. I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO SHOOTING SPORTS, I HAD A FRIEND WHO TOLD ME ABOUT IT AND I SAID ‘OH MAN, THAT SOUNDS LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF MACHO BULLSHIT, I DON’T THINK I’M INTERESTED, BUT I SAID O.K., I’LL COME OUT AND TRY IT. IT’S JUST VERY ENJOYABLE. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY IT’S SO ENJOYABLE, BUT IT IS. THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE, IN TERMS OF RECOIL, THE SMOKE, AND THE NOISE, IT’S JUST A LOT OF FUN TO DO. [AS A VOLUNTEER COACH] I THINK THAT VOLUNTEERING IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. IT’S EXTREMELY GRATIFYING. I MEAN, YOU’RE MOTIVATION ISN’T TO DO IT BECAUSE YOU’RE GETTING PAID. I GET PAID DOING OTHER THINGS THAT’S A SATISFACTORY COMPENSATION FOR ME. I DON’T NEED MONEY FOR EVERYTHING THAT I DO, SO A CHUNK OF TIME THAT I HAVE AVAILABLE, I VOLUNTEER, AND I ENJOY DOING IT. [WORKING WITH PARENTS AND KIDS IN] THE SHOOTING SPORTS, [IS] DEFINITELY [ENJOYABLE]. YES IT IS, IT IS GOOD BECAUSE THE PARENTS, WE’RE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE. WE WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO DO IT SAFELY, AND THE PARENTS ARE CERTAINLY ON THE SAME SIDE IN TERMS OF THAT I MIGHT BE VERY ADAMANT WITH THE PARTICIPANT ABOUT KEEPING THEIR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER FOR AN EXAMPLE, AND I MIGHT HEAR THE PARENT SAYING THE SAME THING ‘OH, HEY, KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THAT TRIGGER’. I’LL SAY IT AND THE PARENT WILL JUMP IN AS WELL, SO THEY’RE ON THE SAME PAGE IN TERMS OF DOING IT. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WERE MY MENTORS, MY COACHES, PEOPLE WHO HELPED ME WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. THOSE FOLKS ARE GOING ON TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE, SO IT’S A GREAT CYCLE.” RECALLING SOME OF THE CHALLENGES TO BEING A COACH AND SHOOTER, FRIESEN SAID, “SHOOTING SPORTS ARE VERY UNUSUAL IN THAT THE BASICS ARE VERY EASY TO MASTER, THEN ALL IT IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SHUT UP, STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND JUST DO IT. IF YOU OVER THINK IT, THAT’S WHEN THINGS GO AWRY. SO, IF YOU KIND OF HAVE A PLAN, YOU KNOW THE BASICS, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO, AND THEN AFTER THAT, AT THE POINT WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY ENGAGED IN IT, WHEN THE BUZZER BLOWS AND YOU BEGIN TO ENGAGE IN THOSE TARGETS, YOU DON’T THINK ABOUT IT. BASICALLY YOU START IT OFF IN A LITTLE CARD WE HAD IT ON AN INCLINE, THEN ON THE BUZZER, THEY HAVE CHECKED YOU ALL OVER AND MADE SURE YOU ARE READY TO GO, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE COURSE OF FIRE IS. SO THERE IS A RANGE OFFICER THAT IS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. AND THAT PERSON WOULD SAY ‘DO YOU KNOW THE COURSE OF FIRE AND IF YOU DO, LOAD AND MAKE READY’ SO YOU LOAD AND MAKE READY, AND YOU HAVE YOUR SHOTGUN ON THIS LITTLE CART THAT YOU ARE IN AND YOU HAVE YOUR PISTOL LOADED IN YOUR HOLSTER AND YOU HAVE YOUR RIFLE STAGE FURTHER DOWN RANGE. SO THEN IT WOULD BE ON THE BUZZER YOU HIT THIS RELEASE AND THE CART STARTS ROLLING DOWN THE RAMP AND AS AS IT DOES, THERE IS THESE CLAY PIGEONS THAT ARE ALL THE WAY DOWN THE SIDES AND YOU HAVE TO SHOOT AT THE CLAY PIGEONS ON EITHER SIDE AND GET OUT , EXIT THE CART, AND THEN THERE ARE SOME OTHER PIECES OF STEEL THAT YOU HAVE TO SHOOT WITH YOUR SHOTGUN AND THEN THE LAST ONE THAT YOU SHOOT TRIGGERS A BIRD THROWER, A CLAY PIGEON THROWER, AND IT FLINGS A BIRD UP IN THE AIR, AND YOU HAVE TO HIT THAT WHEN ITS GOING, AND THEN YOU HAVE TO UNLOAD AND SHOW THAT YOUR FIREARM IS CLEAR. THEN YOU MOVE TO THE NEXT STAGE WHERE YOU GRAB YOUR PISTOL THERE IS A BUNCH OF PAPER TARGETS, IT’S CALLED THE COOPER TUNNEL, A TUNNEL THAT YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH SO YOU HAVE TO CROUCH DOWN OR GO ON YOUR KNEES AND YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH LITTLE PORTS THAT YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH, AND SHOOT THROUGH THERE, AND THIS SIDE YOU HAVE TO SHOOT THROUGH. SO YOU GO THROUGH THIS WHOLE PROCESS THAT WAY, THEN WHEN YOU EXIT THERE ARE STILL A COUPLE TARGETS STILL FOR PISTOL AT THE END. THEN YOU HAVE TO UNLOAD, LOCK THE ACTION OF YOUR PISTOL, SET YOUR PISTOL DOWN AND A RANGE OFFICER SEES THAT YOU ARE ALL CLEAR AND THEN YOU GO TO YOUR RIFLE THAT WAS STAGED THERE. AND THEN THERE ARE SOME TARGETS AND THOSE TARGETS, ACTUALLY WE HAD THEM ON A BIANCHE MOVER, THAT IS ACTUALLY A PLATFORM THAT IS ON A CHAIN DRIVE THAT MOVES THE TARGETS ACROSS. AS ITS MOVING YOU HAVE TO GO AND FIRE AT THEM WITH YOUR RIFLE TO HIT THESE PIECES OF PAPER AS THEY ARE MOVING ACROSS IN FRONT OF YOU. THAT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF PHYSICAL STUFF, BUT YOU ARE JUST PUFFING AT THE END. AND IF YOU DO IT WELL, IT TAKES 35 SECONDS, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IT’S ALL MEASURED IN THE HITS AND THE TIME. THOSE ARE THE TWO THINGS. SOME PEOPLE, LIKE RYAN I WAS TALKING ABOUT WHO IS ON THIS NATIONAL TEAM, MAN HE’S LIKE HALF MY TIME, ALL THE TIME. IF I CAN EVEN DOUBLE HIS TIME, I’M PLEASED WITH THAT. SO THE ONLY THING I GET LUCKY WITH IS IF MY ACCURACY IS BETTER THAN HIS. BUT HE IS ACCURATE AND HE IS FAST AND THAT’S DIFFICULT. ANYWAY, THAT’S WHAT A 3-GUN STAGE IS LIKE. FUN STUFF. [G]OING OUT ON NORMAL PRACTICE IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT, LIKE FOR THE SHOTGUN SHOOTERS, THEY’LL JUST HAVE A BIRD THROWER AND THEY WILL JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE BIRD, PRESSING THE TRIGGER AND FOLLOWING THE BIRD. FOR THE RIFLE SHOOTERS, TYPICALLY, THEY JUST WANT TO SHOOT THE TIGHTEST GROUP POSSIBLE. THAT MEANS THAT BASICALLY WHEN YOU FIRE, THE PROJECTILES END UP IN A SMALL AREA ALTOGETHER, OR IF PREFERRED, TOUCHING. THE PEOPLE WHO DO IT, THEY’LL SHOOT TARGETS AT 100,200 AND 300 YARDS. SO NOW FOR ME, I’M NOT A BIG CENTRE FIRE RIFLE SHOOTER, BUT I’M NOT BAD AT IT, WITH GOOD EQUIPMENT, I CAN SHOOT MAYBE A 5-INCH GROUP AT MAYBE 100 YARDS. SO 5 SHOTS AT 300 YARDS ARE ALL WITHIN THAT 5-INCH DIAMETER. THE PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY GOOD CAN SHOOT 5 SHOTS AT 300 YARDS AND CAN PUT THEM IN A MUCH TIGHTER AREA, SO THEY WOULD OBVIOUSLY WIN THAT COMPETITION OVER ME. IT’S VERY CONTROLLED, VERY METHODICAL. THEY WILL BE MONITORING THEIR BREATHING, THEY HAVE A SYSTEM FOR IT, THEY WILL DO LIKE “NOW I’LL TAKE 7 BREATHS AND AS I STOP, PRESS THE TRIGGER AND THEN GET PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ONE”. SOME OF THEM VERY MUCH HAVE A SYSTEM TOO THAT IS VERY METHODICAL AND OTHERS, HANDGUN SHOOTING—WHICH IS WHAT I DO MOSTLY, IT’S MOSTLY DRILLS- DRILLS IN TERMS OF DRAW, SHOOT, RELOAD. IT’S ALL IN TERMS OF FUNCTIONALITY AND RELOADING, AND BEING SAFE WITH THE DRAW AND GETTING THE HIT AS QUICK AS YOU CAN. THE PEOPLE THAT CAN DO IT DRAW AND HIT THE TARGET IN UNDER A SECOND. I’M PROBABLY 1.3 SECONDS, COMMONLY. HARASEM AND SUDO WERE INVOLVED WITH ORGANIZING THE JULY 1, 2017 EVENTS FOR CANADA 150, WITH SUDO ACTING AS CHAIR FOR THE LETHBRIDGE CANADA DAY COMMITTEE WITH THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE AND HARASEM AS A MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE. I THINK [THERE] WAS A LOT OF PRESSURE, BUT REALLY GREAT PRESSURE. I WAS VERY PROUD TO BE ABLE TO BE PART OF THE COMMITTEE. WE ALSO HAD THREE PUBLIC VOLUNTEERS FROM THE COMMUNITY. WE HAD ADELLE HARRINGTON, BOBBY MCCALLUM AND DAVID FRITZ WHO ALSO PLAYED A HUGE ROLE IN HELPING COORDINATE SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THERE.” “AS SOON AS CANADA DAY 2016 ENDED, WE WERE ALREADY THINKING ABOUT WHAT WE WERE GOING TO BRING BACK, WHAT KIND OF BUDGET WE WERE GOING TO NEED, WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES WE WERE GOING TO HAVE, HOW WE WERE GOING TO MAKE IT SPECIAL, AND MAKE IT STAND OUT THE NEXT YEAR…FOR THE REST OF THE CANADA DAY [EVENTS], THE ONES THAT AREN’T CANADA 150 OR STAND-OUT, WE WOULD PROBABLY ONLY START [PLANNING] ABOUT SIX MONTHS IN ADVANCE. BUT, THE PLANNING PROCESS FOR CANADA DAY, PERIOD, IS QUITE LONG AND STRENUOUS. WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT SOME PRETTY TIGHT TIMELINES WHEN WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PLANNING AN EVENT THAT BIG. WE DEFINITELY NEEDED THE FULL YEAR TO PLAN CANADA 150.” “CURRENTLY, THE ONLY SPECIAL EVENT THAT THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE REALLY HOSTS, AS A CORPORATION, IS THE CANADA DAY EVENT. WE RELY ON OUR COMMUNITY GROUPS TO DO MOST OF OUR OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS." ON THE EVENTS PLANNED, HARASEM RECALLED, “IN ALL HONESTY, FOR THE CANADA DAY ACTIVITIES ITSELF, THOUGH I’M ON THE COMMITTEE, I’M NOT AS INVOLVED WITH THAT AS OTHER THINGS THAT I OVERSAW THAT LASTED FROM JANUARY 1ST TO DECEMBER 31ST. SEEING JENNIE AND THE TEAM AND HOW MUCH THEY WORKED…THEY EVEN CHANGED THE LAYOUT AT HENDERSON LAKE THAT HAD BEEN THE SAME WAY FOREVER AND WE HAD TO GO TO SENIOR LEADERS OF THE CITY AND ASK FOR EXTRA MONEY BECAUSE THE BUDGET FOR CANADA DAY HASN’T CHANGED FOR TWELVE OR FIFTEEN YEARS. TO PUT ON SOMETHING THAT WE KNEW THE PUBLIC EXPECTED A LOT [FROM]…[WAS] MY BIGGEST ROLE WITH THE CANADA DAY. IT WAS A HUGE AMOUNT OF WORK AND IT WAS SO SUCCESSFUL, ESPECIALLY ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA SIDE. AT THE CITY, WE’RE USED TO SEEING A LOT OF NEGATIVE COMMENTS. OUR COMMUNICATIONS TEAM HAS SAID THAT THE MOST POSITIVE COMMENTS THEY’VE EVER HAD ON ANYTHING THAT THEY’VE EVER POSTED ON THEIR FACEBOOK WAS AFTER THE CANADA DAY. I THINK THAT THEIR TEAM, JENNIE’S TEAM, DID AMAZING AT MEETING THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE PUBLIC WHICH WERE VERY HIGH.” “I CAME IN [WITH THE COMMUNITY GROUPS ORGANIZING]. WE HAD A GRANT, ‘CANADA 150’. WE HAD EXTRA FUNDING INJECTED INTO OUR BUDGET FOR 2017 [AT] OUR REQUEST, SO THAT WE COULD HELP LOCAL GROUPS THAT WERE ALREADY DOING EVENTS TO THEME IT AROUND CANADA 150. NORMALLY, THE CITY’S RULES IS YOU CAN ONLY GET ONE GRANT FOR ANY EVENT, EVEN THOUGH THERE’S MULTIPLE GRANTS AVAILABLE. BUT, FOR CANADA 150, WE ALLOWED GROUPS TO GET THEIR NORMAL GRANT, AND WE ALLOWED THEM TO ASK FOR UP TO $750 EXTRA, AND THAT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO THEN THEME THEIR EVENT. WE DIDN’T CARE HOW THEY DID THAT. IF THEY WANTED TO USE $750 TO BUY RED AND WHITE CUPCAKES AND BALLOONS [THEY COULD]. WE HAD [AT THE] JAPANESE GARDEN A HUNDRED AND FIFTY JAPANESE DANCERS PERFORMING AND THEY BOUGHT SPECIAL RED MATCHING JACKETS WITH THE MONEY THEY GOT. IT WAS OUR WAY OF ENCOURAGING THE COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE CANADA 150 ALL YEAR-ROUND. BECAUSE ALL WE DO IS CANADA DAY, WE HAD TO FIND A WAY TO HELP THE COMMUNITY CELEBRATE CANADA 150 AND TO PUT IT IN THE PUBLIC’S EYES ALL YEAR-ROUND IN ANY WAY WE COULD. WE HAD A LOT OF GROUPS AND A LOT OF EVENTS. THERE WAS THIRTY-EIGHT EVENTS THAT RECEIVED FUNDING OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, SO THERE WAS SOMETHING EVERY MONTH OF THE YEAR.” “DURING 'PRETTY, WITTY AND GAY', WHICH IS AN EVENT THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY PUTS ON IN FEBRUARY/MARCH, THEY USED THEIR FUNDING TO [HAVE] A BIG BULLETIN BOARD WHERE PEOPLE [COULD] WRITE DOWN THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE GAY IN CANADA. AND TO SHARE THEIR FEELINGS ON [BEING GAY IN CANADA] TO CONNECT BECAUSE, OBVIOUSLY, WE’RE A MORE OPEN-MINDED COUNTRY AROUND THAT THAN MOST OF THE WORLD. THAT, TO ME, WAS A REALLY UNIQUE WAY TO CELEBRATE CANADA’S 150TH.” “WE ALSO HAD A SMALL THEATRE GROUP COME TOGETHER, A COLLECTIVE THAT HAD NEVER EXISTED BEFORE. THEY PUT ON A VERY CONTROVERSIAL PLAY ABOUT FORMER PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER WHICH I WENT TO SEE AND IT WAS PRETTY SMALL. IT WASN’T THIS HUGE PLAY WHICH IS DONE IN CASA IN THE BLACK BOX [THE COMMUNITY ATB ROOM] BUT IT WAS FUNNY. IT WAS VERY CONTROVERSIAL AND WE DID PUT SOME MONEY BEHIND THAT.” “[THERE WAS] UPPER VICTORIA PARK NEIGHBOURS. I HAD SO MANY NEIGHBOUR DAYS. BUT WITH NEIGHBOUR DAY BEING A VERY POPULAR EVENT IN JUNE, AND WE’VE GOT MORE NEIGHBOURHOOD ASSOCIATIONS FORMING, WE REALLY ENCOURAGED THE NEIGHBOURHOODS TO APPLY FOR THE GRANT. MOST OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ASSOCIATIONS, AT THIS POINT, THEIR NEIGHBOUR DAY EVENTS ARE PRETTY SMALL, UNDER A HUNDRED PEOPLE. BUT IT’S THE PERFECT PLACE TO CELEBRATE CANADA DAY AND CELEBRATE YOUR NEIGHBOURS. OF COURSE, UPPER VICTORIA PARK IS THE ‘GO BIG OR GO HOME’ NEIGHBOURHOOD ASSOCIATION FOR NEIGHBOUR DAY. IT’S EXCITING WHENEVER WE’RE ABLE TO SUPPORT THE THEME OF THE EVENT IN ANY WAY BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT PEOPLE FROM EVEN OUTSIDE LETHBRIDGE ATTEND THAT EVENT. WE’RE NOT JUST SUPPORTING THE MEMBERS OF UPPER VICTORIA PARK NEIGHBOURHOOD ASSOCIATION WHEN WE SUPPORT SOMETHING, SO IT WAS NEAT TO BE ABLE TO PUT SOME MONEY THERE.” “OF COURSE, WINTER LIGHTS FESTIVAL AT JAPANESE GARDEN IS A VERY NEW EVENT. THIS WAS ONLY ITS SECOND YEAR, EVER. THOUGH IT IS A TRADITIONAL, JAPANESE, CULTURAL WINTER EVENT, WE WERE ABLE TO GIVE THEM SOME FUNDING, TOO, BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY [HAD] THE FIRST EVENT IN 2017 BECAUSE THEY START IN EARLY DECEMBER AND GO TILL FEBRUARY. THEY WERE THE LAST EVENT, ‘CAUSE THEY WERE ON NEW YEAR’S EVE IN 2017. THAT FESTIVAL, THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF IT, KICKED OFF THE BEGINNING OF CANADA 150 AND ENDED CANADA 150 FOR US. IT WAS NEAT TO HAVE SUCH AN IMPORTANT CULTURAL GROUP AND ATTRACTION IN LETHBRIDGE…BE THE FOCUS OF THAT. THERE WERE EVENTS OF ALL SIZES. WE EVEN HAD THE DOGS THAT [ON] THE LAST DAY OF OPERATIONS [AT WESTMINSTER POOL] IS JUST FOR DOGS. EVEN THE HUMANE SOCIETY GOT MONEY TO [HAVE] DOG CANDIES THAT WERE RED AND WHITE…DOG TREATS DECORATED WITH RED AND WHITE BALLOONS AND RIBBONS. I WENT TO IT AND IT WAS HILARIOUS. THE DOGS [TOOK] OVER THE POOL AND THEY’RE SO HAPPY, IN CELEBRATION OF CANADA’S 150TH.” “WE ALSO HAD FREE SWIMMING AND SKATING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT THE CITY SPONSORED AS A CELEBRATION. THAT WAS BECAUSE WE OBVIOUSLY WANT PEOPLE TO BE ACTIVE AND WE WANT PEOPLE TO USE OUR FACILITIES, AND WE KNOW THAT COSTS CAN BE A BARRIER. EVERY MONTH WE HAD AT LEAST ONE FREE SWIMMING WHERE THE FIRST HUNDRED AND FIFTY PEOPLE WERE FREE. IN THE SUMMER THAT INCLUDED BOTH OF THE OUTDOOR POOLS, HENDERSON AND WESTMINSTER. HENDERSON WAS REALLY POPULAR ‘CAUSE IT’S ONLY SECOND YEAR OF OPERATIONS…IT’S STILL [A] VERY POPULAR PLACE TO GO. THEN, WE HAD FREE SKATING AT ALL OUR ARENAS, INCLUDING THE NEW ATB CENTRE AND WE HAD THOSE AT LEAST [ONCE] A WEEK THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE YEAR. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN LETHBRIDGE GOT TO PARTICIPATE IN SWIMMING OR SKATING FOR FREE AS [PART OF THE] CELEBRATION. AT SOME OF THOSE, WE HANDED OUT LITTLE CANADA FLAGS OR CANADA TATTOOS OR HAD BALLOONS.” ON THE DONATION OF CANADA 150 MATERIALS TO THE MUSEUM, HARASEM NOTED, “I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS IMPORTANT TO GO TO THE GALT BECAUSE I KNOW THAT WHEN WE FIRST REALIZED WE NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE THE 150TH, THE FIRST THING WE DID WAS LOOK BACK TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED AT THE 100TH AND WHAT WE HAD IN THE MUSEUM AND ELSEWHERE IN LETHBRIDGE FOR CELEBRATIONS THAT OCCURRED AT THAT TIME. [WE WERE LOOKING TO] SEE IF THERE WERE THINGS THAT WE COULD MIMIC OR SHOULD KNOW ABOUT. WE USED A LOT OF PHOTOS THROUGH OUR REC AND CULTURE GUIDE FOR THAT YEAR TO REMIND PEOPLE THAT, FIFTY YEARS AGO WAS THE BIG CENTENNIAL. WE THOUGHT THAT WHEN THE 200TH COMES, THAT PEOPLE WOULD PROBABLY BE WANTING TO LOOK BACK TO 2017 TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED.” SUDO ADDED, “I THINK CANADA’S SESQUICENTENNIAL [150TH ANNIVERSARY] WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER BECAUSE FIFTY YEARS IS A LONG TIME AND A LOT HAPPENS IN FIFTY YEARS. WAISTBAND AND TOP HALF OF SKIRT HAVE WHITE EMBROIDERED FLOWERS ON THEM WITH TINY CUTOUTS. ABOVE AND BELOW WAISTBAND, DRESS HAS NARROW PLEATS. ELBOW LENGTH SLEEVES END WITH A SCALLOPED EDGE. MEN'S FROCK COAT. BLACK WOOL. DOUBLE BREASTED; BUTTONS ARE STEEL, OVERLAID WITH BLACK THREAD IN A WEAVE PATTERN. IMPRESSED INTO BACK OF EACH BUTTON IS "CARANTIE * 32 * ". COAT HAS NOTCHED LAPELS, THAT END IN A V-SHAPE. COLLAR IS SLIGHTLY NARROWER THAN LAPELS. THERE ARE TWO BUTTON HOLES ON LAPEL, ONE OF WHICH IS SEWN UP. BELOW WAIST LINE JACKET IS SLIGHTLY FULLER. THERE ARE NO OUTSIDE POCKETS, BUT A WELT POCKET ON EACH INSIDE BREAST. INSIDE OF JACKET IS LINED WITH BLACK SILK, EXCEPT FOR SLEEVES WHICH ARE LINED WITH A WHITE AND BLACK STRIPED COTTON. LINING ON RIGHT ARM IS LOOSE, AND APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN REPAIRED. THERE ARE THREE SMALLER BUTTONS SAME AS ABOVE, ON EACH CUFF, WITH MOCK BUTTONHOLES. BACK OF JACKET, HAS A VENT, ABOVE WHICH ARE 2 BUTTONS (SAME AS ABOVE). EACH 'TAIL' OF VENT HAS A HIDDEN SLIT POCKET ON INSIDE.
