BUFFALO IN CENTER WITH AN INDIAN STANDING ON ONE SIDE AND A WHITE WOMAN STANDING ON THE OTHER. ANOTHER PERSON IS KNEELING BEHIND AND ONE IN THE BACKGROUND TO THE LEFT. COLOURS USED ARE GOLD BACKGROUND, MOTIF IN BLACK, WHITE AND GREY. A SECTION OF BEADS ARE MISSING ON THE WOMAN'S FOOT.

DONOR BELIEVES IT TO REPRESENT THE SIGNING OF THE PEACE TREATY BETWEEN THE NATIVE INDIANS AND NEW COMING CANADIANS. DONOR BORN IN 1885. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS. SHE WAS UNABLE TO FIND NEW INFORMATION ABOUT THE BEADWORK'S CREATOR BUT DID FIND THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT THE DONOR, MABEL JOHNSON, IN A LETTER ADDRESSED TO GALT MUSEUM STAFF IN SEPTEMBER 1977: "TODAY A LARGE CONSIGNMENT WAS SHIPPED TO YOU BY CANADIAN EXPRESS COMPANY. IT CONTAINS A VERY BEAUTIFUL SAMPLE OF INDIAN BEADWORK WHICH I FOUND IN CALGARY IN 1930 AND HAD IT FRAMED. IT HAS HUNG IN MY HOME EVER SINCE AND HAS BEEN MY PRIDE AND [JOY]. ELIZABETH "BESSIE" WATSON [NEE REED], THE NEEDDLEWORKER, WAS ELDEST DAUGHTER OF JOB AND MARY REED; LIVED NEXT DOOR WITH HUSBAND GEORGE H. WATSON IN DUPLEX ON 6 AVE. SO., BUILT BY JOB REED IN 1890. SEE FAMILY GALLERY FILE, 1997, FOR FURTHER HISTORY OF REED FAMILY. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING ONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REED FAMILY. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF JOB REED WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM AN ARTICLE ON THE REED FAMILY AND FARM FROM THE DECEMBER 30, 1985 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, REED'S DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT FROM 1906, AND THE GALT ARCHIVES. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. THE COUPLE RETURNED TO ENGLAND, BUT REED'S MEDICAL TRAINING WAS NOT RECOGNIZED THERE, AND IN 1882 THEY CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AGAIN, MOVING WEST ACROSS CANADA IN STAGES, FINALLY ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1886. THE FAMILY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: RICHARD, HENRY, ELIZABETH (WHO MARRIED GEORGE HERBERT WATSON), JOB JUNIOR (KNOWN AS BUDD), GEORGE, ANNIE, AND ELLA. REED PURCHASED TWO LOTS ON WHAT IS NOW 6TH AVENUE SOUTH. THE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED A MARKET GARDEN ON THE PROPERY, AND BUILT A STONE DUPLEX THAT STILL STANDS ON THE 1200 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. REED WORKED AS A COAL MINER TO EARN MORE MONEY TOWARDS INVESTING IN FURTHER LAND, AND RAISED PIGS WITH SCRAP FOOD FROM THE NEARBY RCMP BARRACKS. IN 1901, REED PURCHASED 2.5 SECTIONS OF LAND NEAR PRESENT-DAY GRANUM WITH HIS FOUR SONS AND ONE SON-IN-LAW; HIS SON BILLY LATER TOOK OVER THIS RANCH. REED WAS A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE IN LETHBRIDGE AND A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD. IN EARLY 1906, HE PURCHASED EDGEHILL FARM, NEAR SIX MILE COULEE, BUT HE DIED LATER THAT YEAR ON APRIL 25. MARY REED LIVED AT THE FARM FOR YEARS AFTERWARD, AND DIED IN KELOWNA, B.C. IN 1932 AT HOME OF ONE OF HER SONS. BOTH JOB AND MARY REED ARE BURIED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY IN LETHBRIDGE. STEVENGRAPHS DATE BACK TO THE 1860S, WHEN THE LIFTING OF IMPORT RESTRICTIONS ON SILK AND RIBBONS WIPED OUT THE DOMINANT INDUSTRY OF COVENTRY. WHILE THOUSANDS HAD TO EMIGRATE, STEVENS REMAINED, AND EVOLVED TECHNIQUES WHICH MADE IT POSSIBLE TO WEAVE SILKEN MINIATURES BY PROGRAMMING THE LOOM WITH CARDS. ALTHOUGH TENS OF THOUSANDS WERE PRODUCED BETWEEN 1862 AND 1914, PLUS A FEW UP TO 1939, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DESIGNS WAS ONLY 188. IN 1940, THE COMPANY'S PRODUCTION MANAGER TOOK A SAMPLE BOOK CONTAINING EVERY DESIGN, HOME FROM THE FACTORY. THE SAME NIGHT, THE COVENTRY AIR RAID DEMOLISHED THE STEVENS PLANT. THE COLLECTION OF SAMPLES IS NOW IN THE CITY'S MUSEUM. *UPDATE* IN 2018, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILES AND ACCESSORIES, INCLUDING A BELT BUCKLE DONATED BY AGNES BAINES (NEE GIBSON). LETHBRIDGE HERALD RESEARCH INDICATES THAT BAINES WAS BORN ON 20 JANUARY 1912 IN CARSTAIRS, ALBERTA. HER SIBLINGS WERE MILDRED BOS, JEAN MORGAN (D. 2000 IN EDMONTON, AB), ROBERT GIBSON, AND A BROTHER WHO PASSED AWAY AS AN INFANT. SHE MARRIED AL BAINES ON 31 DECEMBER 1941. BAINES’ OBITUARY STATES THAT THE COUPLE RESIDED IN LETHBRIDGE FROM 1945 ONWARDS. SHE PASSED AWAY ON 3 AUGUST 1999 AT THE AGE OF 87 YEARS. HER HUSBAND, AL BAINES, WAS BORN IN LUNDBRECK, ALBERTA IN 1909. ACCORDING TO LETHBRIDGE HERALD RESEARCH, HIS FATHER CAME TO THE AREA IN 1903 TO PUT A NEW RAIL LINE OVER THE FRANK SLIDE IN THE CROWSNEST PASS, ALBERTA. NORTHERN PLAINS INDIANS. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON ASKED TWO FORMER MEMBERS OF THE LETHBRIDGE JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, PHIL EDMUNDSON AND PAUL RUSZNAK, ABOUT THE FIRST NATIONS ARTIFACTS THAT THE GROUP DONATED TO THE GALT MUSEUM IN 1964, 1969, AND 1973. NEITHER RECALLED HOW THE JAYCEES CAME INTO OWNERSHIP OF THE ARTIFACTS, AS THEIR ACQUISITION PREDATED BOTH EDMUNDSON AND RUSZNAK’S MEMBERSHIP IN THE CHAMBER. RESEARCH CONDUCTED INTO LETHBRIDGE’S GURNEY MUSEUM FOUND A CONNECTION BETWEEN ITS PROPRIETOR, WALTER GURNEY, AND THE JAYCEES, WHO ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE FROM THE APRIL 16, 1946 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ADVOCATED ON GURNEY’S BEHALF FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE TO THE FORMER BOARD OF TRADE BUILDING WHERE THE MUSEUM WAS HOUSED. AN ARTICLE FROM THE JULY 13, 1948 ISSUE OF THE HERALD DESCRIBES SOME OF THE FIRST NATIONS ARTIFACTS ON DISPLAY IN THE MUSEUM: “TOMAHAWKS, ARROW HEADS, PEACE PIPES, BEAD AND LEATHER WORK, CLOTHING AND WOODCRAFT”. UPON THE CLOSURE OF THE MUSEUM AND SALE OF GURNEY’S COLLECTION TO BELMORE SCHULTZ OF THE ALTAMONT MUSEUM IN COUTTS, MENTION WAS MADE IN A HERALD ARTICLE FROM MAY 16, 1961 OF “HISTORICAL INDIAN RELICS THAT BELONG TO THE JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAVE BEEN RETAINED IN THE CITY AND WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN PROPER DISPLAY FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE”. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ARTIFACTS WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE JAYCEES BY GURNEY DURING THE DISSOLUTION OF HIS MUSEUM, BUT NO FURTHER CONFIRMATION WAS FOUND. CROSS STITCH PATTERN SHEET WAS USED BEFORE BOOKS WERE AVAILABLE SO THAT WOMEN COULD KEEP SAMPLES FOR EMBROIDERY. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT RUTHANN LABLANCE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF CLOTHING, INCLUDING A PAIR OF GLOVES DONATED BY ANNE DUECK. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. ANNE DUECK PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 81 ON DECEMBER 13, 2004. ACCORDING TO HER OBITUARY “ANNE WAS KNOWN FOR HER TEACHING IN THE COMMUNITY OF COALDALE AT JOHN DAVIDSON AND R.I. BAKER SCHOOLS UNTIL HER RETIREMENT.” SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF PETER P. DUECK AND ANNA DUECK (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). PETER P. DUECK PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 88 ON AUGUST 9, 1983. ANNA DUECK (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN) WAS BORN IN THE CRIMEA AND MOVED TO CANADA IN 1926. ACCORDING TO HER OBITUARY, SHE LIVED IN COALDALE FROM THAT POINT FORWARD, EXCEPT FOR ONE YEAR. SHE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 86 ON DECEMBER 13, 1981. PETER DUECK’S BROTHER WAS NAMED FRANK DUECK. FRANK PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 78 ON JANUARY 9, 1983. ACCORDING TO HIS OBITUARY, HE WAS BORN, RAISED, AND EDUCATED IN RUSSIA AND MOVED TO CANADA IN 1926, WHERE HE FARMED IN THE COALDALE DISTRICT BEFORE RETIRING TO LETHBRIDGE AND THEN CALGARY.
