COUNTED CROSS-STITCH TAPESTRY IS RECTANGULAR IN SHAPE WITH WOOL STITCHING. BACKGROUND IS LIGHT BROWN AND HAS RED, BLUE, YELLOW AND WHITE FLOWERS WITH THREE BIRDS AT EACH END. A GREEN LEAF AND VINE BORDER WITH SMALLER FLOWERS SURROUNDS BIRDS AND BIGGER FLOWERS EXCEPT ALONG BOTTOM EDGE. WOOL IS STITCHED TO COTTON BACKING. SEWN ALONG EDGES IS 2.4CM WIDE WHITE COTTON EDGING. REVERSE HAS WOOL STRANDS FROM STITCHING. EDGING AND TAPESTRY HAVE A NUMBER OF SMALL STAINS AND TAPESTRY HAS BEEN REPAIRED NEAR ONE END WITH SINGLE LOOP STITCH IN BLACK AND WHITE THREAD. STITCHING IS LOOSE ALONG EDGE AS WELL.

SOME BERRIES ARE WORN OFF AND THE PLATE HAS TEN SUBSTANTIAL CHIPS, INCLUDING ONE LARGE ONE.

TEAPOT, OR SHOYU JAR, WAS OWNED BY THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WHILE LIVING IN VANCOUVER PRIOR TO THE SECOND WORLD WAR. FROM 1942 TO 1945 THE FAMILY WAS INTERNED IN SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA. FOLLOWING THE WAR THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY MOVED TO COALDALE, ALBERTA. AT COALDALE REV. NAKAYAMA FOUNDED THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION WHERE HE WAS RECTOR FROM 1945 TO 1970. FROM AUGUST 29 TO 31, 2011 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, JOY KOGAWA, ABOUT HER MEMORIES ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC OBJECTS THAT SHE DONATED IN 1997. OF THIS ARTIFACT, KOGAWA SAID: “[A] LITTLE SHOYU BOTTLE… I DON’T KNOW IF [MY MOTHER] BOUGHT THIS IN VANCOUVER OR IF IT CAME FROM JAPAN… IT WAS ALWAYS WITH US FROM THE VERY EARLIEST DAYS, ALL THE WAY THROUGH, RIGHT TO THE END… IT WASN’T JUST FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS, IT WAS IN CONSTANT USE… WE NEVER PUT [SOY SAUCE] ON RICE. LENORA ADELAIDE (LAIDA) DUCE (NEE SHEFFIELD) WAS BORN ON FEBRUARY 2, 1898 AT CARDSTON, AB. SHE WAS THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM W. AND LENORA HUDSON SHEFFIELD. AT THE AGE OF 17 SHE TOOK A JOB WITH AGT AND ON JUNE 1, 1916 SHE WAS APPOINTED AS AGENT CHIEF OPERATOR, A POSITION SHE HELD UNTIL HER MARRIAGE ON FEBRUARY 2, 1921 TO WILLIAM HINMAN DUCE. LENORA PASSED AWAY ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2000. WILLIAM HINMAN DUCE WAS BORN IN CARDSTON, AB ON JULY 23, 1896, THE SON OF THOMAS WILLIAM AND RHODA ADELAIDE HINMAN DUCE. HE WORKED FOR DUCE BROTHERS, A STORE WHICH SOLD SHOES, MEN’S CLOTHING, AND FURNITURE. HE ALSO SERVED IN THE R.N.C.V.R. DURING WWI, TRAINING ON THE WEST COAST AND SERVING IN HALIFAX UNTIL DECEMBER 23, 1918. WILLIAM ALSO SOLD INSURANCE FOR A FEW YEARS, WORKED AT CARDSTON MOTORS, FORD MOTORS IN TABER, INSPECTED CROPS FOR PRAIRIE FARM ASSISTANCE, AND OPERATED A FARM IMPLEMENT BUSINESS. IN 1952, WILLIAM SOLD THE FAMILY HOME IN CARDSTON AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE. HE PASSED AWAY ON JANUARY 27, 1971 AT THE AGE OF 74. DONOR'S FATHER COLLECTED ORNAMENT FROM THE CAPITOL THEATRE IN LETHBRIDGE WHEN IT WAS DECORATED WITH FANCY PLASTER WORK AND PAINTED PLASTER CEILING SOMETIME IN THE 1930S. DONOR'S FATHER, HARRY HUGH BENNETT, WAS BORN IN MEDICINE HAT TO MICHAEL JOHN AND ALICE MAY BENNETT. THE FAMILY MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE ABOUT 1919. THEY THEN MOVED TO SHAUGHNESSY IN 1927 WHERE HARRY'S FATHER WORKED AS A CARPENTER. HARRY JOINED THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES MEDICAL CORP FROM CALGARY, AND LATER TRANSFERRED TO A VEHICLE MAINTENANCE DIVISION. HE WAS DISCHARGED AT THE END OF WORLD WAR 2 HAVING ACHIEVED THE RANK OF PRIVATE. HARRY WORKED AS A CONDUCTOR ON THE FREIGHT TRAINS FOR THE CPR, AND WHEN HE RETIRED HE WAS A COMMISSIONAIRE IN LETHBRIDGE. DONOR'S PARENTS LIVED ON 13 ST. SOUTH IN LETHBRIDGE.

HE WAS MARRIED TO LOIS JUNE DUFF (NEE CORNWALL). ACCORDING TO LOIS DUFF’S LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARY, SHE WAS BORN IN MOINES, IOWA ON JUNE 26, 1904. THE FAMILY MOVED TO A FARM EAST OF MILK RIVER, ALBERTA IN 1908, THEN MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE 1919. SHE LIVED IN THE CITY FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. THE CORNWALL FAMILY HISTORY SHE CONTRIBUTED IN THE PIONEER PEMMICAN CLUB ROUNDUP HISTORY BOOK (PUBLISHED IN 1984) STATES, “MY PARENTS, HERBERT AND ELLA CORNWALL AND THEIR FIVE CHILDREN – BERNICE, BEATRICE, BARTLEY, GERTRUDE, AND I (LOIS JUNE) CAME FROM DES MOINES TO WARNER IN NOVEMBER 1908. DAD AND BARTLEY FILED ON HOMESTEADS TEN MILES EAST OF MILK RIVER. THE FAMILY MOVED TO THE FARM IN THE SPRING OF 1910. I CAN REMEMBER SEEING BUFFALO BONES AND THOSE RANGE CATTLE SCATTERED OVER THE PRAIRIE.” THE NARRATIVE CONTINUED, “ON THE FARM WE HAD A LARGE TWO AND A HALF STOREY HOUSE WHICH SERVED AS A STOPPING PLACE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE LUCKY STRIKE AND KIPPENVILLE AREAS BEFORE THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT TO FOREMOST AND MANYBERRIES. IT TOOK MEN FROM THOSE AREAS A DAY TO REACH OUR PLACE WITH A TEAM OF HORSES. THEY WOULD GO TO MILK RIVER AND BACK TO OUR PLACE THE SECOND DAY, THEN LEAVE FOR HOME THE THIRD DAY. WHAT A RELIEF IT WAS FOR THEM WHEN THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT!” “SLEEPY HOLLOW SCHOOL WAS BUILT IN 1912 AND, LIKE ALL SUCH STRUCTURES SERVED ALSO CHURCH SERVICES, MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENT. GRADES ONE TO TEN WERE TAUGHT IN THIS SCHOOL. IN THE FALL OF 1919 DAD, MOTHER AND I MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE SO THAT I COULD CONTINUE MY HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION AND ATTEND GARBUTT BUSINESS COLLEGE. I WORKED IN THE OFFICES OF RYLAND’S LADIES WEAR AND THE BECKER LUMBER COMPANY… I MARRIED ARTHUR DUFF IN 1934. THIS OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS DECORATION SET, INCLUDING SANTA CLAUS, RUDOPLH, EIGHT REINDEER AND SANTA'S SLEIGH, WAS BUILT BY STEVE LEONARD, THE FATHER OF THE DONOR DON LEONARD, FOR THE FAMILY’S YEARLY OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS DISPLAY AT THEIR LETHBRIDGE HOME AT 828 12 ST NORTH. IN OCTOBER 2013, GALT MUSEUM COLLECTIONS TECH KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED DON LEONARD ABOUT HIS FATHER’S DECORATIONS AND THEIR MEANING FOR HIS FAMILY. LEONARD SAID: “[THE SET] WAS MADE IN THE MIDDLE 50S I BELIEVE BY MY DAD. IT’S WON SEVERAL AWARDS FOR BEST CHRISTMAS DISPLAY, BEST LIGHT DISPLAYS IN LETHBRIDGE, AND IT WAS A LOT OF HEART AND LOVE PUTTING INTO THAT DISPLAY AND MY PARENTS LOVED TO DO THE CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS EVERY YEAR THEY COULD. THEY COULDN’T WAIT TO GET THEM UP AND THAT IT’S REALLY A PART OF ME AND I COULDN’T THROW IT OUT AND I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO. I HAVE MY OWN DISPLAY… IN THE U.S. THAT THEY BUILT FOR ME, IDENTICAL TO IT, SO YOU CAN SEE THE LOVE THEY HAD IN MAKING THESE DISPLAYS… I CAN ACTUALLY REMEMBER MY DAD DRESSED UP AS SANTA CLAUS ONE YEAR AND I CAME HOME AND HE WAS SITTING IN THE SLEIGH… I WAS KIND OF SHOCKED WHEN I CAME HOME AND SANTA CLAUS WAS IN THERE STACKED UP WITH PRESENTS… [DAD] DID A LOT OF WOODWORKING. EVERYTHING IN THE HOUSE HERE PRETTY WELL HE BUILT… THE REST OF THE HOUSE WOULD BE DECORATED IN LIGHTS AND THEY ALWAYS LIKED TO DO TWO RED, TWO GREE, TWO RED TWO GREEN OVER THE WHOLE HOUSE. AND ALSO BEFORE THAT, LATER ON, THERE WAS A CANDY CANE MADE OUT OF A STOVEPIPE… I HELPED THEM PUT THE DISPLAYS OUT UNTIL I WENT TO COLLEGE, YEAH UNTIL ’68… IT WAS PROBABLY IN THE TOP TEN BEST DECORATED HOUSES IN THE CITY EVERY YEAR FOR PROBABLY FOR TWENTY/TWENTY-FIVE YEARS. IT WAS OUTSTANDING THEY ADDED SOMETHING NEW EVERY YEAR, MORE LIGHTS, CHANGED THE COLOURS, CHANGED HOW THEY DID IT. THE WHOLE HOUSE WAS DECORATED: EVERY WINDOW, THE ROOF, THE CARPORT, SOMETIMES THE BUSHES. I MEAN IT WAS BIG TIME DECORATION, THEY LOVED TO DO IT. THEY HAD A LOT OF FUN DOING IT… IT WAS A GREAT ATTRACTION. I CAN REMEMBER COUNTING HUNDREDS OF CARS COMING BY AT NIGHT, STOPPING AND LOOKING AND TAKING PICTURES, PARENTS TAKING THEIR KIDS OUT OF THE CAR AND PUTTING THEM IN THE SLEIGH AND TAKING PICTURES WITH THEM. MY PARENTS JUST LOVED SEEING THAT HAPPEN… MY DAD LIKED, AND MY MOTHER TOO, BUILDING STUFF. HE LIKED BUILDING DISPLAYS, HE HAD, DURING THE SUMMER, HE DID RABBITS AND SHEEP AND PUT THEM AROUND ALL THE PLANTS. AND THEY TOOK A LOT OF PRIDE, AS MUCH AS YOU COULD EVER TAKE IN YOUR YARD. THEY’RE WINNERS OF AWARDS FOR THE BEST YARD IN THE SUMMER, BEST FLOWERS. THEY JUST TOOK A LOT OF PRIDE IN HOW THE HOUSE LOOKED… YOU JUST THINK OF WHAT THEY DID FOR YOU, IT WAS HOW THEY BROUGHT YOU UP; IT WAS HOW THEY WERE GENEROUS TO OTHER PEOPLE AND HOW THEY LOVED EVERYBODY… IT IS JUST THE GENEROSITY THEY GAVE TO EVERYBODY AND WANTED TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE OUT AND HAVE THE FUN TIME ENJOYABLE. THERE IS A LONG DARK GREY ELECTRICAL CORD EXTENDING FROM THE BASE.

THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. THE FOLLOWING BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LANDRY FAMILY WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARIES OF EDWARD AND EMMA LANDRY, AND THEIR DAUGHTER HELEN GRAHAM, THE DONOR OF THIS PRINT. EDWARD A. LANDRY WAS BORN IN NOVA SCOTIA AND CAME TO SOUTHERN ALBERTA C.1907 WITH HIS WIFE EMMA, WHO WAS ALSO BORN IN EASTERN CANADA. INITIALLY EDWARD WORKED IN MINES AROUND PICTURE BUTTE, AND LATER ACQUIRED A FARM NEAR IRON SPRINGS. EDWARD AND EMMA HAD FIVE DAUGHTERS AND THREE SONS. EDWARD WAS A MEMBER OF THE MASONS AND THE FAMILY BELONGED TO THE UNITED CHURCH. EDWARD PASSED AWAY ON FEBRUARY 17, 1928 ON THE FARM, AND EMMA FOLLOWED ON AUGUST 5, 1963 AT THE AGE OF 85. THE DONOR, HELEN GRAHAM, WAS BORN IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1909, SHORTLY AFTER THE FAMILY'S ARRIVAL IN ALBERTA. SHE GREW UP IN AND AROUND PICTURE BUTTE, AND ATTENDED HIGH SCHOOL IN LETHBRIDGE. HELEN MARRIED AUSTIN W. GRAHAM AND THEY HAD TWO SONS, DAVID AND LANNY. SHE WAS EMPLOYED BY THE HUDSON BAY AND T. EATON STORES IN LETHBRIDGE. HELEN GRAHAM PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 20, 2007. CLOCK IS PREDOMINANTLY WOOD (DARK), WITH A WIDE BRASS RING IN THE CENTER SURROUNDING THE FACE OF THE CLOCK - WHICH IS WHITE WITH THE WORDS "LION DO QUARTZ" INSIDE. ON THE BRASS RING, THERE ARE 9 CHINESE MASKS WITH VARYING COLOR COMBINATIONS. BETWEEN THE MASKS, THERE IS A REPEATING DESIGN PATTERN. ATTACHED TO THE BACK OF THE CLOCK, IS A METAL STAND WHICH SWIVELS OUT AS WELL AS A GOLD COLORED STICKER WITH CHINESE CHARACTERS, AND NUMBERS IN RED. THE BOX ITSELF IS DARK RED AND HAS A SMALL GOLD DESIGN ON FRONT. YELLOW PADDING INSIDE CUSHIONS THE CLOCK. DAD AND BARTLEY FILED ON HOMESTEADS TEN MILES EAST OF MILK RIVER. THE FAMILY MOVED TO THE FARM IN THE SPRING OF 1910. I CAN REMEMBER SEEING BUFFALO BONES AND THOSE RANGE CATTLE SCATTERED OVER THE PRAIRIE.” THE NARRATIVE CONTINUED, “ON THE FARM WE HAD A LARGE TWO AND A HALF STOREY HOUSE WHICH SERVED AS A STOPPING PLACE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE LUCKY STRIKE AND KIPPENVILLE AREAS BEFORE THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT TO FOREMOST AND MANYBERRIES. IT TOOK MEN FROM THOSE AREAS A DAY TO REACH OUR PLACE WITH A TEAM OF HORSES. THEY WOULD GO TO MILK RIVER AND BACK TO OUR PLACE THE SECOND DAY, THEN LEAVE FOR HOME THE THIRD DAY. WHAT A RELIEF IT WAS FOR THEM WHEN THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT!” “SLEEPY HOLLOW SCHOOL WAS BUILT IN 1912 AND, LIKE ALL SUCH STRUCTURES SERVED ALSO CHURCH SERVICES, MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENT. GRADES ONE TO TEN WERE TAUGHT IN THIS SCHOOL. IN THE FALL OF 1919 DAD, MOTHER AND I MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE SO THAT I COULD CONTINUE MY HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION AND ATTEND GARBUTT BUSINESS COLLEGE. THIS BOWL WAS CRAFTED BY BRYAN MATTHEWS OUT OF WOOD SOURCED FROM A POPLAR TREE THAT GREW OUTSIDE THE GALT MUSEUM BUILDING FOR APPROXIMATELY 70 YEARS. SHE RECEIVED HER EDUCATION FOR NURSING IN CALGARY AND TORONTO AND THEN WENT ON TO NURSE IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI BEFORE MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1943. A NOTICE IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ON MAY 25, 1943 STATES THAT LINTON WOULD MAKE HER HOME WITH HER SISTER, MRS. J. G. HUTCHINGS. LINTON WAS PREDECEASED BY HER SISTER EVA HUTCHINGS, HER TWO BROTHERS, CLIFFORD AND IVAN LINTON, AND BROTHER-IN-LAW JACK HUTCHINGS. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO CONTACT THE DONOR’S NIECE AND NEPHEW, ANNE FAIRFIELD AND JOHN HUTCHINGS. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, IT WAS LEARNED THAT BOTH WERE DECEASED.
