WOOD BOX HAS BROWN SCULPTED CARDBOARD TO IMITATE LEATHER ON OUTSIDE AND EDGES. OPENS ON TWO HINGES ALONG THE BACK. LID FASTENS SHUT WITH A THREE LEAF CLOVER SHAPED CLASP ON A HINGE WITH A HOLE IN THE CENTER OVER A PEG ON THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE BOX. BOTH SIDES OF THE CLASPS HAVE THE SAME DECORATIVE BASES. ON THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS A SATIN PILLOW THAT HAS TWO TABS OF MATERIAL ON THE INSIDE. IN PENCIL IT READS "SAUL"(?). THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX IS LINED WITH BROWN VELVET WHICH IS IN TWO PIECES AND GLUED TOGETHER. HAS A WHITE RIBBED LINING AROUND TOP OF BOTTOM. HAS NUMEROUS RIPS AND TEARS IN OUTSIDE PAPER COVERING. PILLOW HAS MANY HOLES AND RUNS. VELVET APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CUT OFF ALONG SOME SIDES, THIS REVEALS SOME REMNANTS OF GLUE AND PAPER. SOME FRAYED MATERIAL IS COMING OUT FROM BEHIND THE RIBBED TRIM.

GEOMETRIC DESIGNS TYPICAL OF BLACKFOOT. UPDATE: CONSULTATION WITH A BLACKFOOT ELDER ON 27 JULY 2017 HAS RETURNED OPINION BACK TO THIS OBJECTS PAST USE AS A CUFF. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILES AND ARTIFACTS IN RELATED LOCATIONS. AMONG THIS SURVEY WERE ITEMS FROM A COLLECTION DONATED BY ANNA LINTON. THE DONOR’S OBITUARY IN THE AUGUST 1, 1992 EDITION OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD STATES THAT LINTON PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE ON JULY 31, 1993 AT THE AGE OF 96 YEARS. THE OBITUARY SAYS THAT LINTON WAS BORN ON FEBRUARY 17, 1894 AND WAS THE DAUGHTER OF EARLY CALGARY PIONEERS. SHE RECEIVED HER EDUCATION FOR NURSING IN CALGARY AND TORONTO AND THEN WENT ON TO NURSE IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI BEFORE MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1943. A NOTICE IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ON MAY 25, 1943 STATES THAT LINTON WOULD MAKE HER HOME WITH HER SISTER, MRS. J. G. HUTCHINGS. LINTON WAS PREDECEASED BY HER SISTER EVA HUTCHINGS, HER TWO BROTHERS, CLIFFORD AND IVAN LINTON, AND BROTHER-IN-LAW JACK HUTCHINGS. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO CONTACT THE DONOR’S NIECE AND NEPHEW, ANNE FAIRFIELD AND JOHN HUTCHINGS. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, IT WAS LEARNED THAT BOTH WERE DECEASED. BRUSH WAS USED BY DONOR'S FATHER, REV. G.G. NAKAYAMA, WHO CORRESPONDED REGULARLY WITH PARISHIONERS, MISSIONARIES AND OTHERS AROUND THE WORLD HE HAD MET. HE ALSO PUBLISHED NEWSLETTERS AND NEWSPAPERS FOR THE JAPANESE CANADIAN COMMUNITY. THIS IS ONE OF MANY ITEMS HE POSSESSED TO PERFORM THESE TASKS. THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WAS ORIGINALLY FROM VANCOUVER BUT MOVED TO COALDALE FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN THEY WERE INTERNED AT SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. THE FOLLOWING MEMORIES WERE PROVIDED BY REVEREND TIM NAKAYAMA IN A LETTER TO THE GALT ON 16 AUGUST, 2007. HE WROTE: “JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY IS A MANUAL ART IN WHICH JAPANESE IDEOGRAPHS ARE EXECUTED BY THE USE OF A “FUDE” BRUSH. THE INK IS PREPARED ON A BLACK RECESSED SMOOTH STONE ON WHICH BLACK “SUMI” (A SPECIAL CHARCOAL SUBSTANCE) IS RUBBED AND MIXED WITH A SMALL QUANTITY OF WATER. THE BRUSH IS DIPPED IN THE PREPARED “SUMI” AND THE IDEOGRAPHS ARE ARTISTICALLY “PAINTED” ON JAPANESE “WASHI” PAPER IF AVAILABLE. IT’S ABSORBENCY TAKES THE BRUSH STROKES THAT ARE BOLDLY MADE IN A GIVEN REGULAR SEQUENCE AND ORDER FOR EACH IDEOGRAPH.”

CENTER OF FIXTURE DISPLAYS A ACORN. FIXTURE HANGS SUSPENDED BY A CHAIN WHICH IS ATTACHED TO A CIRCULAR BLK PLATE.

THE LIGHT FIXTURE WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE MARQUIS HOTEL BEFORE ITS DEMOLITION IN 1988. EMIL GUNDLOCK A MORTGAGE BROKER WORKED WITH THE HOTEL'S OWNERS ,JOANNE AND BOB CORBET, TO REFINANCE THE HOTEL FOR IMPROVEMENTS. GUNDLOCK SAID, HOWEVER, THAT THE ROYAL BANK WOULD NOT APPROVE THE REFINANCING AND, SUBSEQUENTLY, TOOK OVER THE HOTEL'S MANAGEMENT. DISCUSSING THE FUTURE OF THE HOTEL OVER A DRINK (WHILE THE BAR WAS STILL IN OPERATION), CORBET AND GUNDLOCK DECIDED IT WOULD BE A "SHAME" TO SEE THE HOTEL'S ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS DESTROYED AND LOST AND, THUS THEY DECIDED TO REMOVE SOME OF THE HOTEL'S FIXTURES, DOORS (ELEVATOR), ETC. GUNDLOCK CLAIMED IT WAS ENOUGH TO FILL A "TRUCKLOAD". RBC, HOWEVER, LEARNED OF THE SALVAGE OPERATION AND DEMANDED THAT THE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS BE RETURNED. GUNDLOCK KNEW SOME OF THE MATERIAL WAS RETURNED, BUT SOME WAS ALSO RETAINED. GUNDLOCK BELIEVED THAT THE MATERIAL ENDED UP IN THE RBC BANK MANAGER'S HOUSE. GUNDLOCK RECOGNIZED THE LAMP AND BOX THAT IT WAS PACKAGED IN, WHEN HE VISITED THE GALT IN EARLY 2007. SOMEHOW, THE FIXTURE CAME INTO POSSESSION OF TED STILSON WHO LATER PASSED IT ON TO THE DONOR IN 2005. GUNDLOCK WAS CONFIDENT THAT THE STYLE OF THE LAMP, IF NOT THIS VERY LAMP, WAS INSTALLED IN THE ROOM ATTRIBUTED TO SENATOR GLADSTONE WHO WAS THE FIRST NATIVE SENATOR AND FROM THE BLOOD RESERVE. THE ART DECO HOTEL OPENED IN 1928. IN ADDITION TO BEING THE FIRST BUSINESS IN LETHBRIDGE TO UTILIZE NEON SIGNAGE, THE HOTEL BOASTED AN ORIGINAL SEVENTY-EIGHT BEDROOMS AND A BANQUET AREA CAPABLE OF SEATING 250 PERSONS.

THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON GIBSON WAS EXCERPTED FROM HIS LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARY: CHRISTIAN GIBSON WAS BORN IN BELFAST, IRELAND IN 1887 AND EDUCATED IN LONDON, ENGLAND BEFORE ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1908. HE WORKED FOR THE CITY AS ZOO KEEPER AT THE EXHIBITION GROUNDS AND FOR THE ALBERTA RAILROAD AND IRRIGATION COMPANY BEFORE BEGINNING HIS 35 YEAR CAREER WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND COMMERCE IN 1913. GIBSON SERVED WITH THE 25TH BATTERY CANADIAN FIELD ARTILLERY FROM 1908 TO 1914 AND FROM 1914 TO 1919 HE SERVED IN ENGLAND IN FRANCE WITH THE 20TH BATTERY CFA. HE WAS ALSO VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY AS A MEMBER OF THE KIWANIS CLUB, ALLIED ARTS COUNCIL, LETHBRIDGE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY, PLAYGOERS OF LETHBRIDGE, ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, PEMMICAN CLUB, MASONIC LODGE, AND THE GALT HOSPITAL BOARD. HE AND HIS WIFE LINDA WERE HEAVILY INFLUENTIAL IN THE RED CROSS SOCIETY’S LETHRBIDGE CHAPTER, AND HAD TWO CHILDREN, FRED AND DORIS. CHRISTIAN GIBSON PASSED AWAY ON MARCH 26, 1971. IN 2010 HIS DAUGHTER, DORIS BALCOVSKE, PARTICIPATED IN THE GALT MUSEUM’S FIRST ‘TREASURES & CURIOSITIES’ EXHIBIT BY SELECTING ONE OF HER FATHER’S PAINTINGS TO BE DISPLAYED. SHE SUBMITTED THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE ABOUT GIBSON’S ASSOCIATION WITH THE GALT AND HIS PAINTING PRACTICE: “MY FATHER… WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE GALT MUSEUM AND HELPED COLLECT MANY OF THE ARTIFACTS. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF JOB REED WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM AN ARTICLE ON THE REED FAMILY AND FARM FROM THE DECEMBER 30, 1985 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, REED'S DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT FROM 1906, AND THE GALT ARCHIVES. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. THE COUPLE RETURNED TO ENGLAND, BUT REED'S MEDICAL TRAINING WAS NOT RECOGNIZED THERE, AND IN 1882 THEY CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AGAIN, MOVING WEST ACROSS CANADA IN STAGES, FINALLY ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1886. THE FAMILY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: RICHARD, HENRY, ELIZABETH (WHO MARRIED GEORGE HERBERT WATSON), JOB JUNIOR (KNOWN AS BUDD), GEORGE, ANNIE, AND ELLA. REED PURCHASED TWO LOTS ON WHAT IS NOW 6TH AVENUE SOUTH. THE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED A MARKET GARDEN ON THE PROPERY, AND BUILT A STONE DUPLEX THAT STILL STANDS ON THE 1200 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. REED WORKED AS A COAL MINER TO EARN MORE MONEY TOWARDS INVESTING IN FURTHER LAND, AND RAISED PIGS WITH SCRAP FOOD FROM THE NEARBY RCMP BARRACKS. IN 1901, REED PURCHASED 2.5 SECTIONS OF LAND NEAR PRESENT-DAY GRANUM WITH HIS FOUR SONS AND ONE SON-IN-LAW; HIS SON BILLY LATER TOOK OVER THIS RANCH. REED WAS A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE IN LETHBRIDGE AND A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD. IN EARLY 1906, HE PURCHASED EDGEHILL FARM, NEAR SIX MILE COULEE, BUT HE DIED LATER THAT YEAR ON APRIL 25. HANDMADE BAG IS BELIEVED TO DATE TO ABOUT 1888 WHEN JOB REED BEGAN A MARKET GARDENING BUSINESS IN LETHBRIDGE. SEE P19920020001-GA FOR FURTHER REED FAMILY HISTORY & DONOR HISTORY. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING ONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REED FAMILY. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF JOB REED WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM AN ARTICLE ON THE REED FAMILY AND FARM FROM THE DECEMBER 30, 1985 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, REED'S DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT FROM 1906, AND THE GALT ARCHIVES. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. THE COUPLE RETURNED TO ENGLAND, BUT REED'S MEDICAL TRAINING WAS NOT RECOGNIZED THERE, AND IN 1882 THEY CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AGAIN, MOVING WEST ACROSS CANADA IN STAGES, FINALLY ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1886. THE FAMILY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: RICHARD, HENRY, ELIZABETH (WHO MARRIED GEORGE HERBERT WATSON), JOB JUNIOR (KNOWN AS BUDD), GEORGE, ANNIE, AND ELLA. REED PURCHASED TWO LOTS ON WHAT IS NOW 6TH AVENUE SOUTH. THE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED A MARKET GARDEN ON THE PROPERY, AND BUILT A STONE DUPLEX THAT STILL STANDS ON THE 1200 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. REED WORKED AS A COAL MINER TO EARN MORE MONEY TOWARDS INVESTING IN FURTHER LAND, AND RAISED PIGS WITH SCRAP FOOD FROM THE NEARBY RCMP BARRACKS. IN 1901, REED PURCHASED 2.5 SECTIONS OF LAND NEAR PRESENT-DAY GRANUM WITH HIS FOUR SONS AND ONE SON-IN-LAW; HIS SON BILLY LATER TOOK OVER THIS RANCH. REED WAS A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE IN LETHBRIDGE AND A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD. IN EARLY 1906, HE PURCHASED EDGEHILL FARM, NEAR SIX MILE COULEE, BUT HE DIED LATER THAT YEAR ON APRIL 25. MARY REED LIVED AT THE FARM FOR YEARS AFTERWARD, AND DIED IN KELOWNA, B.C. IN 1932 AT HOME OF ONE OF HER SONS. BOTH JOB AND MARY REED ARE BURIED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY IN LETHBRIDGE. EMBOSSED WITH "OFFICE SPECIALTY CANADA THE ORIGINAL SHANNON LOCK ARCH". RINGS ARE U-SHAPED, AND OPEN NEAR TOP BY STRETCHING APART WIRES. HOLE AT TOP FOR HANGING. PAINT SCRATCHED SOMEWHAT THROUGHOUT. 2. IDENTICAL TO .1, EXCEPT RING MOUNT IS ENGRAVED WITH "THE OFFICE SPECIALTY MFG. CO. LTD. NEWMARKET CANADA". PAINT SLIGHTLY MORE SCRATCHED THAN ON FIRST.

SHE EXTRACTED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THE ING FAMILY FROM PERMANENT FILE P19950073001, WHICH CONTAINS A TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW COLLECTIONS TECH KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED WITH HAROLD ING JR., SON OF HAROLD AND MYRA, IN HIS ROOM AT THE LETHBRIDGE HOTEL IN SEPTEMBER 2005. MYRA WAS BORN IN GOLDEN B.C. TO SHIN-BOW AND CHOW TING RAH; HER FATHER ORGINALLY EMIGRATED TO CANADA TO WORK ON CANADIAN RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION AND LATER BECAME A RESTAURANTEUR, WHERE MYRA DEVELOPED HER ENGLISH SKILLS AS A WAITRESS. "IN 1906 MY DAD [HAROLD ING SR.] LEFT HONG KONG FOR VANCOUVER, HE COULDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH... HE'S GOT TO BE A WAITER, A BUSBOY... AND HE LEARNED ALL THE WAY UP, IN THE MEANTIME PICKING UP ENGLISH... "AT APPROXIMATELY FIVE YEARS OLD [MY FATHER] INTRODUCED ME TO THE NEW MOON CAFE, AND I WAS A BUSBOY AT THE AGE OF FIVE... IN 1951 HE SHOWED ME MY FIRST HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL... BECAUSE HE WAS THE OWNER... HE'D WAKE UP AT FIVE IN THE MORNING TO GO TO THE CAFE, OFF AND ON TO THE GROCERY STORE AND MIGHT BE DONE AT EIGHT AT NIGHT, SUPPER AND IMMEDIATELY TO CHINATOWN [FOR] GAMBLING, PUTTING DOWN MAH JONG." HAROLD JR. ATTENDED WESTMINISTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DURING THE DAY, AND CHINESE SCHOOL AT THE CHINESE NATIONAL LEAGUE IN THE EVENINGS - HIS FATHER WAS THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE, AND THE ORGANIZATION RAN THE SCHOOL, CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS, FILM SCREENINGS, AND BANQUETS, FUNDED BY MEMBERSHIP FEES. HAROLD'S YOUNGER BROTHER, CALVIN, "GOT SENT TO A BOARDING SCHOOL SOMEWHERE. HE WAS GIFTED, BUT HE HAD A BYPASS SURGERY, HE HAD SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIS HEART. HE COULDN'T HANDLE PUBLIC SCHOOL, SO THEY SENT HIM TO B.C." AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND A BRIEF STINT IN CALGARY, HAROLD JR. RAN ING'S GROCERY FOR HIS FATHER, AND IN THE LATE 1960S AND EARLY 70S ALSO WORKED AS A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD AND A SALESMAN AT SEARS. BOTH HAROLD SR. AND MYRA ING PASSED AWAY IN THE 1990S, AND THE OBJECTS ENCOMPASSING DONATION P19950073001-231 WERE COLLECTED FROM THE FAMILY HOME. 1. CASE: 31.5 (L) X 25CM (W) X 12.5CM (H) WOOD COVER WITH BLACK PAPER COVERING WHICH IMITATES LEATHER LOOK. BACK OF CASE HAS FOUR ROUNDED STEEL FEET. FRONT HAS STEEL PLATE WITH CLASP RIVETED TO IT. AT CENTER OF PLATE IS CIRCULAR TAB WHICH OPENS CASE. TAB HAS CONCENTRIC CIRCLES ETCHED INTO IT. ETCHED INTO PLATE IS "U.T. CO. INC" AND "MADE IN U.S.A.". ABOVE PLATE ARE TWO RECTANGULAR STEEL BRACKETS WHICH HOLD LEATHER STRAP 19CM LONG. STRAP IS BLACK WITH STITCHED EDGING AND MUSHROOM SHAPED ENDS. LEATHER IS WORN AND CRACKING. ABOVE STRAP IS RECTANGULAR AREA WHICH WAS COVERED WITH BLUE FABRIC TAPE WHICH HAS BEEN PAINTED BLACK. PORTION OF TAPE HAS WORN OFF. AT INSIDE OF BACK ARE TWO STEEL ARMS WHICH HOOK INTO TYPEWRITER WHEN COVERED. 2. TYPEWRITER: 25.5 XM (L) X 21CM (W) X 10CM (H) BLACK CAST IRON TYPEWRITER WITH MANUAL KEY-STROKE MECHANISM. TYPEWRITER IS ATTACHED TO WOODEN BASE WHICH HAS TWO STEEL HINGE PLATES RIVETED TO BACK AND STEEL KNOB AT CENTER OF FRONT. WOODEN CASE SITS OVER TOP TYPEWRITER AND ATTACHES TO WOOD BOTTOM TO BECOME PORTABLE. TYPEWRITER HAS "UNDERWOOD STANDARD PORTABLE TYPEWRITER" EMBOSSED IN GOLD ACROSS BOTTOM OF FRONT FRAME. ALL KEYS ARE WHITE WITH BLACK PRINTING AND STEEL COLLARS. HAS BLACK RIBBON ON TWO BLACK ALUMINUM REELS. BEHIND KEYSTROKE MECHANISM IS LINED AND NUMBERED; PITCH SCALE ALSO EMBOSSED IN GOLD. PLATEN IS RUBBER WITH NUMEROUS PITS. PAPER SUPPORT AT BACK HAS LOGO WHICH IS LARGE GOLD "T" INSIDE A "U" WITH A TYPEWRITER AND "TRADE MARK" UNDERNEATH. WRITTEN ACROSS SUPPORT IN LARGE LETTERS IS "UNDERWOOD" WITH "MADE IN U.S.A" BENEATH. AT BASE OF BACK FRAME READS "PATENTED MADE IN U.S.A. OTHER PATENTS PENDING". IT LISTS 28 PATENT DATES FROM MARCH 19, 1912 TO MAY 22, 1923. ON BACK OF PAPER SUPPORT IS "LICENSED UNDER GUBELMANN PATENT NOVEMBER 9, 1915". BOTTOM OF TYPEWRITER HAS FOUR PLASTIC FEET SCREWED INTO WOOD BASE.

THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF MAYOR SHACKLEFORD WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM ARCHIVES CANADA ONLINE AND A LETHBRIDGE HERALD TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM MAY 31, 1992. A.W. SHACKLEFORD WAS BORN IN ESSEX, ENGLAND IN 1899 AND CAME TO CALGARY WITH HIS PARENTS IN 1909. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL HE TRAINED AS A DRAFTSMAN BUT WAS EMPLOYED BY THE FILM EXCHANGE AND FOX FILMS. IN 1921 HE WAS HIRED TO MANAGED THE KING'S THEATRE IN LETHBRIDGE AND BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH MARK ROGERS, A LETHBRIDGE BUSINESSMAN WHO OWNED THREE LOCAL MOVIE THEATRES. SHACKLEFORD ALSO BECAME PARTNER IN THE AMUSEMENT COMPANY THAT OPENED THE HENDERSON LAKE PAVILLION IN 1924. BY 1925 HE WAS PART-OWNER OF THE FORMER EMPRESS THEATRE ON 5TH AVENUE SOUTH, RENAMING IT THE ROXY. HE THEN TEAMED UP WITH THE FAMOUS PLAYERS COMPANY TO REMODEL THE FORMER PALACE THEATRE AND RENAME IT THE CAPITOL. SHACKLEFORD ALSO OPENED THE THEATRE IN THE FORMER COLLEGE MALL, BUILT THE 960-SEAT PARAMOUNT THEATRE ON 4TH AVENUE SOUTH, AND TOOK OVER OPERATION OF THE DIRVE-IN THEATRE AT THE SOUTH CITY LIMITS. SHACKLEFORD WAS HEAVILY INVOLVED IN CIVIC LIFE, ACTIVE IN GROUPS INCLUDING THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY, THE GYRO CLUB, UNITED WAY, LETHBRIDGE & DISTRICT EXHIBITION BOARD, BOARD OF TRADE, ST. AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH, AND THE ALBERTA THEATRE OPERATORS ASSOCIATION. HE AND HIS WIFE ADA HAD TWO SONS, ROBERT AND DOUGLAS. AFTER SEVERAL TERMS AS ALDERMAN STARTING IN 1939, SHACKLEFORD FIRST SERVED AS MAYOR FROM 1944 - 1947, AND FOR TWO MORE TERMS FROM 1952 - 1955 AND 1957 - 1961.
