WOOD BOX HAS BROWN SCULPTED CARDBOARD TO IMITATE LEATHER ON OUTSIDE AND EDGES. OPENS ON TWO HINGES ALONG THE BACK. LID FASTENS SHUT WITH A THREE LEAF CLOVER SHAPED CLASP ON A HINGE WITH A HOLE IN THE CENTER OVER A PEG ON THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE BOX. BOTH SIDES OF THE CLASPS HAVE THE SAME DECORATIVE BASES. ON THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS A SATIN PILLOW THAT HAS TWO TABS OF MATERIAL ON THE INSIDE. IN PENCIL IT READS "SAUL"(?). THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX IS LINED WITH BROWN VELVET WHICH IS IN TWO PIECES AND GLUED TOGETHER. HAS A WHITE RIBBED LINING AROUND TOP OF BOTTOM. HAS NUMEROUS RIPS AND TEARS IN OUTSIDE PAPER COVERING. PILLOW HAS MANY HOLES AND RUNS. VELVET APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CUT OFF ALONG SOME SIDES, THIS REVEALS SOME REMNANTS OF GLUE AND PAPER. SOME FRAYED MATERIAL IS COMING OUT FROM BEHIND THE RIBBED TRIM.

THIS BOWL WAS CRAFTED BY BRYAN MATTHEWS OUT OF WOOD SOURCED FROM A POPLAR TREE THAT GREW OUTSIDE THE GALT MUSEUM BUILDING FOR APPROXIMATELY 70 YEARS. THE CROCK IS COLORED A DARK GREY, WITH A SMALL HOLE AT THE VERY TOP. NO MARKINGS SAVE FOR A SMALL STAMP WITH A DESIGN, AND SOME CHINESE CHARACTERS ONE THE WHITE, NARROW BOTTOM. THE STAND IS MADE OF WOOD, AND IS DARK RED IN COLOR. THE STAND AND CROCK ARE CONTAINED INSIDE A BOX THAT MEASURES 21.1 CM WIDE, 20.7 CM LONG, AND 14.7 CM TALL. THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX HAS AN ORANGE REPEATED DESIGN COVERING THE TOP AND ALL FOUR SIDES OVER A PURPLE BACKGROUND. A SMALL METAL CLASP IS LOCATED AT THE FRONT OF THE BOX. UPDATE: CONSULTATION WITH A BLACKFOOT ELDER ON 27 JULY 2017 HAS RETURNED OPINION BACK TO THIS OBJECTS PAST USE AS A CUFF. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILES AND ARTIFACTS IN RELATED LOCATIONS. AMONG THIS SURVEY WERE ITEMS FROM A COLLECTION DONATED BY ANNA LINTON. THE DONOR’S OBITUARY IN THE AUGUST 1, 1992 EDITION OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD STATES THAT LINTON PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE ON JULY 31, 1993 AT THE AGE OF 96 YEARS. THE OBITUARY SAYS THAT LINTON WAS BORN ON FEBRUARY 17, 1894 AND WAS THE DAUGHTER OF EARLY CALGARY PIONEERS. SHE RECEIVED HER EDUCATION FOR NURSING IN CALGARY AND TORONTO AND THEN WENT ON TO NURSE IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI BEFORE MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1943. A NOTICE IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ON MAY 25, 1943 STATES THAT LINTON WOULD MAKE HER HOME WITH HER SISTER, MRS. J. G. HUTCHINGS. LINTON WAS PREDECEASED BY HER SISTER EVA HUTCHINGS, HER TWO BROTHERS, CLIFFORD AND IVAN LINTON, AND BROTHER-IN-LAW JACK HUTCHINGS. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO CONTACT THE DONOR’S NIECE AND NEPHEW, ANNE FAIRFIELD AND JOHN HUTCHINGS. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, IT WAS LEARNED THAT BOTH WERE DECEASED. ANNE CAMPBELL, 16 JUNE 1912-, WAS BORN IN SUTHERLAND, SASKATCHEWAN, NOW A PART OF SASKATOON. HER PARENTS WERE JOHN AND THOMASINA COWIE, SCOTTISH IMMIGRANTS. MRS. COWIE SANG IN ST PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH CHOIR AND MR. COWIE SANG AT HOME. ANNE BEGAN SINGING AT AGE EIGHT, AND BY AGE 14 SHE WAS CONDUCTING THE JUNIOR CHOIR OF ST. PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH IN SUTHERLAND. IN SASKATOON, ANNE STUDIED PIANO WITH LYLE GUSTIN AND VOICE WITH F.B. MORRISON. SHE ALSO STUDIED WITH DR. ERNEST VINCI OF TORONTO. MR. GUSTIN ENCOURAGED ANNE TO TAKE MUSIC COURSES AT ST. ANDREWS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN. ANNE EVENTUALLY EARNED AN A.R.C.T. FROM THE TORONTO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC, AS WELL AS AN A. MUS (ASSOCIATE IN MUSIC) AND L. MUS (LICENCIATE IN MUSIC), BOTH IN PIANO. IN 1939 ANNE MARRIED DON CAMPBELL AT WESTMINTSER UNITED CHURCH IN SASKATOON. AFTER THEY WERE MARRIED, THE CAMPBELLS MOVED TO CALGARY SO THAT DON COULD BEGIN A JOB AS A TRAVELING SALESMAN WITH MARSHALL WELLS HARDWARE. THEIR SONS MAC AND STEWART WERE BORN IN CALGARY, IN 1943 AND 1947 RESPECTIVELY. AFTER 1947 DON BECAME MANAGER OF THE HYDE AND SUNDAL HARDWARE STORE IN PICTURE BUTTE. DON EVENTUALLY BOUGHT THE STORE, CHANGED ITS NAME TO CAMPBELL HARDWARE AND WAS IN BUSINESS FOR 31½ YEARS. SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH ASKED ANNE TO FORM AN ALL GIRLS YOUTH CHOIR IN 1953, AND THE CAMPBELLS MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE. THE CHOIR ACCEPTED GIRLS FROM ALL OVER SOUTHERN ALBERTA. THE JUNIOR CHOIR SANG AT CHURCH SERVICES ONCE A MONTH, AND PERFORMED OPERETTAS IN THE SOUTHMINSTER CHURCH HALL. IN 1964 ANNE FORMED THE TEEN CLEFS, A 20 MEMBER CHAMBER CHOIR WITH GIRLS OF HIGH SCHOOL AGE. IN 1967 ANNE WAS INVITED TO TAKE THE GROUP TO MONTREAL FOR A PERFORMANCE AT EXPO 67. IN 1968 THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS WERE FORMED. THE CHOIR WENT TO THE UNITED KINGDOM THAT YEAR TO COMPETE AT THE TEESIDE INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND AND THE LLANGOLLEN INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL EISTEDDFOD IN WALES. UNTIL THE EARLY 1990S THE CHOIR CONTINUED TO TRAVEL THROUGHOUT CANADA AND OVERSEAS, AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPETE IN MANY MUSIC FESTIVALS. THE UNITED KINGDOM, DENMARK, BELGIUM, AUSTRIA AND JAPAN WERE AMONG THE COUNTRIES VISITED BY THE ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS. AS GIRLS FROM THE JUNIOR CHOIR AND ANNE CAMPBELL SINGERS GREW OLDER, ANNE FORMED THE LINNET SINGERS SO THAT THOSE WHO WISHED COULD CONTINUE IN A CHOIR. THE LINNET SINGERS ALSO TRAVELED AND COMPETED EXTENSIVELY. ANNE CREATED THE MINI CHOIR AS A TRAINING GROUP FOR GIRLS SIX TO EIGHT YEARS OLD. SOME FORMER MEMBERS OF ANNE’S CHOIRS HAVE ESTABLISHED SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN MUSIC AS TEACHERS, CHOIR LEADERS AND OPERA SINGERS. ANNE CAMPBELL HAS RECEIVED MORE THAN A DOZEN AWARDS FOR HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHORAL MUSIC IN CANADA, INCLUDING THE ORDER OF CANADA IN 1977 AND HONOURARY DOCTOR OF LAWS DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE IN 1983. ANNE’S CHOIRS HAVE WON MORE THAN 20 AWARDS IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS. THE CHOIRS RECORDED 14 ALBUMS, AND WERE BROADCAST MANY TIMES BY THE CBC AND CKUA RADIO. THE GIRLS SANG MANY TYPES OF MUSIC: MADRIGALS, FOLK SONGS, SACRED MUSIC AND SHOW TUNES. THEY SANG AT VARIOUS TIMES IN ENGLISH, JAPANESE, GERMAN AND FRENCH. IN THE MID 1990S ANNE CAMPBELL RETIRED FROM ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CHOIRS. IN 1999 SHE MOVED TO COCHRANE, ALBERTA TO LIVE NEAR HER SON STEWART AND HIS FAMILY. *UPDATE* ACCORDING TO HER LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARY, ANNE CAMPBELL PASSED AWAY ON APRIL 13, 2011, AT THE AGE OF 98 YEARS. ACCORDING TO LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM 1969 AND 1976, AND PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GALT ARCHIVES (199110764419, 1991107612370, 199110764421, AND 199110764422) THE UKRAINIAN ROOM WAS INSTALLED IN 1966, WHEN THE MUSEUM WAS MOVED FROM THE BOWMAN CENTRE TO THE GALT HOSPITAL BUILDING. THE ROOM WAS FURNISHED WITH OBJECTS DONATED BY THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION, AND THE GROUP HELD ANNUAL TEAS THERE.
