LOCAL ARTIST, A STRONG SUPPORTER OF THE WORKING MAN ORIGINS OF CITY. DELIBERATE CLASHING OF COLOURS INDICATES THE DIRTY, UNHEALTHY & DANGEROUS CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH MINERS TOILED. STRONG LIGHT EMANATING FROM THE LAMP SYMBOLIZES THE ENERGY HE EXERTED IN ORDER TO EKE OUT A BARE EXISTENCE. ARTIST IS MICHAEL PISKO OF LETHBRIDGE WHO HAD HIS OWN SIGN PAINTING/COMMERCIAL ART BUSINESS IN THE CITY. NOW RETIRED. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON MICHAEL PISKO WAS FOUND IN A PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING THE 'MICHAEL PISKO MEMORIAL AWARD', WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE ARTIST'S WIDOW AND THE ALBERTA SOCIETY OF ARTISTS IN 2000, TO BE AWARDED TO A GRADUATING BFA DEGREE PAINTER FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE: "MICHAEL PISKO WAS BORN IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1913. HE MADE HIS LIVING AS A SUCCESSFUL SIGN PAINTER THROUGH HIS BUSINESS, CITY SIGN COMPANY, BUT LANDSCAPE PAINTING WAS HIS LIFE'S FULFILLMENT. TO HONE HIS SKILLS, HE STUDIED THREE SUMMERS AT THE BANFF SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS AND SOUGHT INSTRUCTION FROM SENIOR VISITING ARTISTS WHO CAME TO LETHBRIDGE ON INVITATION OF THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB, OF WHICH HE, IN 1937, WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS. PISKO GREATLY ADMIRED A.Y. JACKSON, THE GROUP OF SEVEN MASTER, WITH WHOM HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SKETCH AND PAINT AROUND LETHBRIDGE WHENEVER JACKSON CAME TO TOWN TO VISIT HIS BROTHER. HE WAS ALSO DEEPLY INFLUENCED BY H.G. GLYDE, WHO TAUGHT AT THE ALBERTA COLLEGE OF ART IN CALGARY AND AT THE BANFF SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS AND WHO VISITED LETHBRIDGE TO TEACH ART CLASSES AT THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB. IN 1947 PISKO WAS ACCEPTED FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE ALBERTA SOCIETY OF ARTISTS. HE WAS A PROLIFIC PAINTER, WHO EXHIBITED REGULARLY WITH THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB AND THE ALBERTA SOCIETY OF ARTISTS. HIS WORK IS REPRESENTED IN MANY PRIVATE, CORPORATE AND PUBLIC COLLECTIONS, AMONG THEM THE ALBERTA FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE. MICHAEL PISKO PASSED AWAY IN 1999." THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB HELD THEIR FIRST MEETING AT THE HOME OF MISS ANNA MACKENZIE ON OCTOBER 7, 1936. EDITH FANNY KIRK WAS THE FIRST ART TEACHER IN LETHBRIDGE. SHE CAME FROM BRITAIN WITH CLASSICAL TRAINING AND IT WAS KIRK WHO SET THE STAGE FOR THE SKETCH CLUB TO COME INTO BEING. THE BANFF SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS ALSO PLAYED A ROLE IN THE FORMATION BY PROVIDING RECOGNITION OF ARTISTIC MERIT THROUGH DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS. ANNA MACKENZIE AND P.J. COLLINS CONCEIVED OF THE CLUB AFTER THEIR EXPERIENCE IN BANFF. THE GROUP WAS FORMED OUT OF AN ENTHUSIASTIC INTEREST IN ART AND SOON AFTER THE GROUP BEGAN MEETING, THERE WERE REGULAR EXHIBITIONS. THE GROUP WAS PRIVY TO THE ATTENTION OF GROUP OF SEVEN ARTIST A.Y.JACKSON WHEN HE MADE HIS FREQUENT SKETCHING TRIPS TO SOUTHERN ALBERTA. HE REGULARLY ACCOMPANIED THE SKETCH CLUB AND HIS INFLUENCE CAN BE SEEN IN MUCH OF THEIR WORK. ANOTHER GUEST OF THE GROUP WAS ANNORA BROWN WHO WAS AN ARTIST WHO HAD TRAINED IN TORONTO, BUT RESIDED IN FORT MACLEOD AND BEGAN SPENDING TIME WITH THE GROUP IN 1939. HER INTEREST IN FLOWER STUDIES IS SUSPECTED TO HAVE INSPIRED MANY OF THE WORKS BY CLUB MEMBERS. DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, THE GROUP ORGANIZED SUMMER CLASSES TAUGHT BY OUT OF TOWN ARTISTS SUCH AS: H.G.GLYDE, WALTER J. PHILIPS AND A.C. LEIGHTON. ACCORDING TO A HISTORY OF THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB WRITTEN BY JOAN STEBBINS IN JUNE, 1985, “THE PAINTINGS OF THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB PORTRAY FAVOURITE SKETCHING AREAS IN THE REGION – THE COULEES PROVIDED ENDLESS MATERIAL, THE RIVERBOTTOM, THE OLD R.C.M.P. BARRACKS, THE WHITNEY FARM, HENDERSON LAKE, THE FELGER HUTTERITE COLONY, THE FOOTHILLS AND WATERTON LAKE WERE OFTEN REPEATED SUBJECTS.” FOR COPIES OF LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES ON PISKO AND HIS CAREER, AS WELL AS PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS FOR THE 1995 ARTWALK DEDICATED TO HIM, SEE PERMANENT FILE P19920009001.

SHE FOUND A MEMO FROM THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ALBERTA IN THIS PAINTING'S PERMANENT FILE THAT PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING DETAILS: "ON SUNDAY, JUNE 22 [1969] THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO THE UNVEILING OF A CENTENNIAL PAINTING 'COAL MINERS IN THE SKY' BY MICHAEL PISKO OF LETHBRIDGE. THE PAINTING IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF BRAVE AND FEARLESS MEN WHO TOILED IN THE COAL MINES OF THIS AREA. ALSO AT THIS TIME APPRECIATION WILL BE EXPRESSED TO THE ARTIST MICHAEL PISKO FOR HIS THOUGHTFULNESS AND GENEROSITY IN HIS GIFT OF THE PAINTING TO THE SIR ALEXANDER GALT MUSEUM. BRONZE COAL MINER STANDING ON A RECTANGULAR BRONZE BASE; THIS IS ON TOP OF A WOOD BASE. WOOD BASE HAS ROUTERED EDGES AND A LIGHT VARNISH. UNDERSIDE OF WOOD BASE HAS GREEN FELT ON IT. MINER HAS A PICK AXE OVER ONE SHOULDER AND A LUNCH BUCKET IN OPPOSITE HAND. HE IS WEARING A CAP WITH LAMP AND TROUSERS WITH SUSPENDERS. CARVED INTO FRONT OF BRONZE BASE IS "C. MARTENS '90".

CREATED BY COALDALE ARTIST CORNELIUS MARTENS. A REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL STATUE INSTALLED IN FRONT OF THE MINER'S LIBRARY IN 1990. THE ORIGINAL STATUE WAS ALSO SCULPTED BY CORNELIUS MARTENS AND WAS CAST BY STUDIO WEST BRONZE FOUNDRY AND GALLERY IN COCHRANE. THE STATUE WAS DEDICATED "TO THE COAL MINER'S OF LETHBRIDGE AND THEIR FAMILIES, WHO FOUNDED A COMMUNITY ON THE PRAIRIES OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA WHICH STILL REFLECT THEIR STRENGTH AND OPTIMISM". AFTER RESTORATION AT THE ORIGINAL FOUNDRY, THE FULL SIZE STATUE WAS RE-LOCATED TO THE NORD-BRIDGE SENIOR'S CENTRE IN 2004, AFTER THE CLOSURE OF THE LETHBRIDGE MINERS' LIBRARY CLUB. LOCAL ARTIST CORNELIUS MARTENS WAS BORN IN THE UKRAINE, AND MOVED TO SASKATCHEWAN WITH HIS FAMILY AT A YOUNG AGE. IT WAS THERE, AS A CHILD, THAT CORNE MADE HIS FIRST SCULPTURES, USING CLAY FROM THE RIVERBANK AND CREATING MODEL ANIMALS. WHILE STILL A YOUNGSTER, HIS FAMILY MOVED AGAIN TO COALDALE, ALBERTA. ALWAYS HAVING AN INTENSE INTEREST IN ART, HE TRIED ANY FORM, BUT PREFERRED SCULPTURE. HE HAD NO FORMAL ART TRAINING, EXCEPT THAT WHICH HE RECEIVED IN GRADE SCHOOL. HIS FAVORITE SUBJECT WAS WESTERN LIFE, INCLUDING HIS FAVORITE SPORT OF RODEO. CORNE DESIGNED AND CREATED THE C.N. WOODWARD AWARD, A TROPHY FOR THE CANADIAN RODEO COWBOYS ASSOCIATIONS, AND A BRONZE SCULPTURE PRESENTED TO GOVERNOR GENERAL ROLAND MICHENER UPON A VISIT TO FORT MACLEOD IN 1970. HE WAS ALSO CHOSEN AS ONE OF SIX ARTISTS TO CREATE TROPHIES THAT WERE PRESENTED AT THE 1972 CALGARY STAMPEDE. THIS WAS A LONG STANDING GOAL OF MARTENS', AND HE CREATED THE AWARDS FOR CALF ROPING AND CHUCKWAGONS WHICH WERE HANDED OUT FOR 5 YEARS. MARTENS ALSO WORKED AS PROMOTION DIRECTOR FOR CJLH-TV IN LETHBRIDGE AND USED A FRAME BUILDING AT THE BACK OF HIS HOME AS A WORKSHOP TO CREATE ART IN HIS SPARETIME. HE AND HIS WIFE BARBARA, RAISED THEIR SON AND DAUGHTER IN COALDALE, AND REMAIN THERE AT PRESENT. THIS REPLICA WAS RETRIEVED FROM THE MINERS' LIBRARY BUILDING ON 13TH STREET NORTH AFTER ITS CLOSURE. LIBRARY MATERIALS AND MINING MEMORABILIA WERE KEPT IN A DISPLAY CASE LOCATED IN THE SOUTH WEST CORNER OF THE MAIN FLOOR CLUB ROOM. THE ORIGIN OF THE LETHBRIDGE MINERS' LIBRARY BEGINS WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A LIBRARY AND READING ROOM BY THE EMPLOYEES OF THE ALBERTA RAILWAY AND COAL CO., IN 1890. THEY WERE SELF-HELP INSTITUTES SET UP BY WORKING MEN TO PROVIDE EDUCATION FOR WORKING MEN SO THEY COULD BETTER THEMSELVES IN LIFE. THE MINERS' LIBRARY WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO THOSE WHO WANTED TO MOVE UP THE ECHELON IN THE COAL MINE. IT WAS ORIGINALLY HOUSED IN A SMALL BUILDING NEXT DOOR TO 108 5TH STREET SOUTH, AND MEMBERSHIP WAS NOT RESTRICTED TO MINERS. A YEAR LATER THE EMPLOYEES RENOVATED THE FORMER #1 BOARDING HOUSE, LOCATED ON THE NORTH SIDE OF MACLEOD ROAD, FOR RELOCATION OF THE LIBRARY AND WHEN THIS LARGER BUILDING OPENED IT IS SAID TO HAVE HAD 300 BOOKS. WITH THE REORGANIZATION OF THE GALT COMPANIES IN 1904, THE AR&C COMPANY'S EMPLOYEES' READING ROOM AND LIBRARY SOCIETY BECAME THE ALBERTA RAILWAY AND IRRIGATION COMPANY'S EMPLOYEE'S READING ROOM AND LIBRARY SOCIETY. THE LIBRARY CONTAINED 1500 BOOKS, PLUS MANY MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS. IN 1908 THE SOCIETY WAS REFERRED TO AS THE GALT MINER'S LIBRARY, AND STILL IN THE #1 BOARDING HOUSE BUILDING, IT CONTAINED A BILLIARD ROOM AND GYMNASIUM. THE NEXT KNOWN MOVE OF THE LIBRARY WAS IN 1917 WHEN THE GALT MINES LIBRARY PURCHASED THE BAILEY ST. SCHOOL AND MOVED IT TO 733 13TH ST. NORTH - WHERE IT IS STILL PART OF THE MODERN BUILDING THAT USED TO BE THE MINER'S LIBRARY. AT COALDALE HE FOUNDED THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION WHERE HE WAS RECTOR FROM 1945 TO 1970. WOOD BOX HAS BROWN SCULPTED CARDBOARD TO IMITATE LEATHER ON OUTSIDE AND EDGES. OPENS ON TWO HINGES ALONG THE BACK. LID FASTENS SHUT WITH A THREE LEAF CLOVER SHAPED CLASP ON A HINGE WITH A HOLE IN THE CENTER OVER A PEG ON THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE BOX. BOTH SIDES OF THE CLASPS HAVE THE SAME DECORATIVE BASES. ON THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS A SATIN PILLOW THAT HAS TWO TABS OF MATERIAL ON THE INSIDE. IN PENCIL IT READS "SAUL"(?). THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX IS LINED WITH BROWN VELVET WHICH IS IN TWO PIECES AND GLUED TOGETHER. HAS A WHITE RIBBED LINING AROUND TOP OF BOTTOM. HAS NUMEROUS RIPS AND TEARS IN OUTSIDE PAPER COVERING. PILLOW HAS MANY HOLES AND RUNS. VELVET APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CUT OFF ALONG SOME SIDES, THIS REVEALS SOME REMNANTS OF GLUE AND PAPER. SOME FRAYED MATERIAL IS COMING OUT FROM BEHIND THE RIBBED TRIM.

THIS BOWL WAS CRAFTED BY BRYAN MATTHEWS OUT OF WOOD SOURCED FROM A POPLAR TREE THAT GREW OUTSIDE THE GALT MUSEUM BUILDING FOR APPROXIMATELY 70 YEARS. THE TREE WAS CUT DOWN ON APRIL 17, 2008, AS PART OF THE MUSEUM’S STRATEGIC REVITALIZATION OF ITS PUBLIC ENTRANCE AND SURROUNDING ROADWAYS. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, SEE PERMANENT FILE.

THE CROCK IS COLORED A DARK GREY, WITH A SMALL HOLE AT THE VERY TOP. NO MARKINGS SAVE FOR A SMALL STAMP WITH A DESIGN, AND SOME CHINESE CHARACTERS ONE THE WHITE, NARROW BOTTOM. THE STAND IS MADE OF WOOD, AND IS DARK RED IN COLOR. THE STAND AND CROCK ARE CONTAINED INSIDE A BOX THAT MEASURES 21.1 CM WIDE, 20.7 CM LONG, AND 14.7 CM TALL. THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX HAS AN ORANGE REPEATED DESIGN COVERING THE TOP AND ALL FOUR SIDES OVER A PURPLE BACKGROUND. A SMALL METAL CLASP IS LOCATED AT THE FRONT OF THE BOX. INSIDE, YELLOW FABRIC CUSHIONS THE CROCK AND STAND. ALSO CONTAINED IN THE BOX IS A CARD WITH INFORMATION ON THE CROCK, HOW IT WAS MADE, THE ARTIST, AND AWARDS HE HAS WON.
