History
THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST, JESSIE REDD URSENBACH, WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION PROVIDED BY RUTH DAW, DONOR OF OTHER WORKS BY URSENBACH TO THE GALT MUSEUM, AND THE REDD-URSENBACH FAMILY HISTORY COMPILED BY EPHRAIM HATCH, JESSIE URSENBACH’S SON-IN-LAW. JESSIE REDD WAS BORN IN NEW HARMONY, UTAH ON AUGUST 15, 1895, TO WILLIAM AND VERENA BRYNER REDD. SHE LIVED IN UTAH UNTIL 1905, WHEN THE REDD FAMILY MOVED TO CANADA. JESSIE WAS EDUCATED IN RAYMOND, GRADUATING FROM THE KNIGHT ACADEMY IN 1912. SHE ATTENDED SUMMER SESSIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA & THE ALBERTA NORMAL SCHOOL IN CALGARY, AND TAUGHT ART IN SCHOOLS IN RAYMOND, CARDSTON, AND GLENWOOD. JESSIE REDD MARRIED OCTAVE WILLI URSENBACH ON FEBRUARY 21, 1918, AND THEY RAISED FIVE CHILDREN – VERENA, WAYNE, CARMEN, GERALD, AND MARILYN. THE FAMILY LIVED IN LETHBRIDGE WHERE OCTAVE WORKED AT ELLISON MILLING CO. JESSIE WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH CLUB & HANDLED CLUB PUBLICITY FOR MANY YEARS. SHE ATTENDED THE BANFF SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS IN THE SUMMER OF 1937 ON A SCHOLARSHIP, AND CONTINUED PAINTING PROLIFICALLY FOR THE NEXT 11 YEARS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF PROFESSOR H.G. GLYDE. JESSIE ALSO RECEIVED ART TRAINING UNDER A.Y. JACKSON (GROUP OF SEVEN ARTIST), AND STUDIED AT THE ONTARIO COLLEGE OF ART IN TORONTO, STUDYING MODERN ART UNDER RODY COURTICES (THOUGH SHE PREFFERED THE MORE TRADITIONAL STYLES OF LANDSCAPE AND STILL LIFE). SHE WAS AFFILIATED WITH THE CANADIAN FEDERATION OF ARTISTS UNDER WHICH SHE EXHIBITED FROM COAST TO COAST, INCLUDING IN NEW YORK CITY AND CALIFORNIA. JESSIE TUTORED A LARGE CLASS OF PRIVATE PUPILS IN LETHBRIDGE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS UNTIL SHE BEGAN THE VOCATION OF MATRON AT THE LATTER DAY SAINTS TEMPLE IN CARDSTON. JESSIE REDD URSENBACH DIED ON MAY 11, 1987. IN 1985, JESSIE URSENBACH WAS RECORDED LOOKING THROUGH THIS ALBUM ON VIDEO. AT THAT TIME, SHE PROVIDED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT MANY OF THE INDIVIDUAL WORKS OF ART, INCLUDING MEMORIES ABOUT HER LIFE DURING THE TIME OF THEIR PRODUCTION. THE FOLLOWING TRANSCRIPT EXCERPTS ARE ORDERED WITH THE CATALOGUE NUMBERS OF THE ARTWORKS TO WHICH THEY PERTAIN. ONLY THE ARTWORKS TO WHICH URSENBACH DIRECTLY REFERRED ARE LISTED. History
DONOR RECOVERED THE CUT OUT EAGLE FROM P.O.W. CAMP 133 IN LETHBRIDGE, MONTHS AFTER THE EVACUATION OF THE CAMP. IT CAME FROM A DESERTED MEDICAL BUILDING. DONOR WAS 13 AT THE TIME, AND LIVED ONLY BLOCKS FROM THE CAMP. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MILITARY OBJECTS, INCLUDING THOSE DONATED BY MIKE PROKOP. INFORMATION ABOUT THE DONOR WAS RETREIVED FROM HIS FUNERAL PROGRAM: "MIKE PROKOP, BELOVED HUSBAND OF LYDIA PROKOP OF LETHBRIDGE PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY AFTER A LENGTHY ILLNESS ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2004 AT THE AGE OF 71 YEARS... MIKE WORKED MANY YEARS AT LETHBRIDGE BATTERY PRIOR TO OPERATING HIS OWN BUSINESS, GENERAL TOY & HOBBY CRAFT. MIKE WAS A MEMBER OF THE 32ND TECH SQUADRON R.C.E.M.E. AND THE 18TH INDEPENDENT FIELD BATTERY REGIMENT... HE ALSO DEVOTED MANY YEARS TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN SEA CADET CORP AS COMMANDING OFFICER AND BAND INSTRUCTOR. HE WAS A LIFETIME MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION SERVING AS POPPY CHAIRMAN AND FIRST VICE." FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, SEE PERMANENT FILE. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON DEVELOPED THE FOLLOWING BRIEF HISTORY OF PRISONER OF WAR CAMP 133 WITH INFORMATION FROM THE GALT MUSEUM BROCHURE "LETHBRDGE'S INTERNMENT CAMPS" AND THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES CANADA WEBSITE. DURING WORLD WAR II THERE WERE 40 PRISONER OF WAR (P.O.W.) CAMPS CONSTRUCTED ACROSS CANADA TO HOUSE THE LARGE NUMBER OF INCOMING POWS - ENEMY MILITARY PERSONNEL THAT WERE CAPTURED IN COMBAT. CAMPS WERE BUILT IN ONTARIO, QUEBEC, THE MARITIMES AND ALBERTA. THE CAMPS IN LETHBRIDGE AND MEDICINE HAT WERE THE LARGEST, TOGETHER HOUSING 22,000 MEN. THE LETHBRIDGE CAMP, NO. 133, WAS BUILT IN THE SUMMER OF 1942, AND BY NOVEMBER OF THAT YEAR HOUSED 13,341 PRISONERS. THE CAMP WAS DIVIDED INTO SIX SECTIONS, EACH WITH SIX DORMITORIES, MESS HALLS, KITCHENS, AND ENTERTAINMENT FACILITIES. MEALS WERE IN SHIFTS WITH PRISONERS SERVING AS COOKS. TAILOR, BARBER AND SHOE REPAIR SHOPS WERE ALSO STAFFED BY PRISONERS, AND NON-COMBAT POWS PRACTICED THEIR PRE-WAR PROFESSIONS AS MEDICAL DOCTORS AND DENTISTS. HOUSING AND RATIONS WERE THE SAME STANDARD AS FOR THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES, WHICH SOMETIMES CAUSED RESENTMENT AMONG LETHBRIDGE CIVILIAN RESIDENTS, WHO WERE UNABLE TO OBTAIN MANY OF THE SAME SUPPLIES ON THEIR STRICT WARTIME RATION ALLOWANCES. WITH MANY YOUNG LOCAL MEN AWAY AT WAR, LOCAL FARMERS BEGAN TO REQUEST LABOUR ASSISTANCE FROM THE CAMP, ESPECIALLY FOR THE SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY. BY 1943 AN AGREEMENT WAS REACHED AND SOME OF THE PRISONERS WORKED ON FARMS THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN ALBERTA. MOST OF THESE PRISONERS WENT FROM THE CAMP TO THE FARMS DAILY, BUT SOME WERE KEPT AT 'LODGES' AT THE MORE DISTANT FARMS FOR DAYS AT A TIME, WITH MINIMAL GUARDING. FOR THEIR LABOUR, THE PRISONERS WERE PAID 50 CENTS PER DAY. WITH WAR'S END, CAMP 133 CLOSED IN DECEMBER 1946 AND ITS PRISONERS WERE SENT BACK TO GERMANY. THE AREA WHERE THE CAMP STOOD EVENTUALLY BECAME AN INDUSTRIAL PARK AND PART OF THE FEDERAL AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTRE.

ON JULY 21, 2017, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED GLENN AND JOANNE ALLEN REGARDING THEIR DONATION OF RCMP AND LETHBRIDGE MEMORABILIA. GLENN ALLEN WAS RAISED IN LETHBRIDGE, AND COLLECTED THE OBJECTS AS A CHILD IN LETHBRIDGE. ON THE LETHBRIDGE JUBILEE PENNANT, ALLEN RECALLED, “PENNANTS WERE REALLY POPULAR IN THOSE DAYS. [MY FAMILY] LOVED PENNANTS, AND, IN MY ROOM, AS A CHILD, I HAD [IT] PINNED TO THE WALL.” “THAT [PENNANT] RELATES BACK TO [MY PARENTS’] MARRIAGE… THE PENNANT WAS THE YEAR THEY WERE MARRIED.” “[IT] WOULD HAVE BEEN POSTED ON MY WALL IN CALGARY. THEN IT WENT INTO A BOX WITH THE OTHER PENNANTS. I LIKELY HAD THOSE BEFORE I WAS ADOLESCENT IN AGE, AND THEN WHEN ADOLESCENCE CAME ALONG, THERE WERE OTHER THINGS THAT INTERESTED ME, AND THOSE PENNANTS WENT.” “PENNANTS…SHOWED THAT YOU HAD BEEN SOME PLACE. MY DAD BEING WITH THE RAILWAY, WE WENT BY RAIL TO VANCOUVER, FROM THE TIME I WAS ABOUT 3 ON. IF YOU STOPPED IN BANFF, YOU HOPPED OUT AND YOU GOT ONE OF THESE, AND YOU DID AT LAKE LOUISE, AND YOU DID AT REVELSTOKE, AND THEY WENT TO SEATTLE. THEY BROUGHT ME [PENNANTS].” “THEY WERE KIND OF ‘THE THING’, SO THEY BROUGHT THOSE BACK TO ME. I HAD DOZENS OF THEM.” ALLEN ELABORATED ON HIS FAMILY’S HISTORY IN LETHBRIDGE, NOTING, “MY MOTHER’S FAMILY CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1923, AND SHE WAS ABOUT 12 AT THE TIME. SHE DIDN’T GO TO SCHOOL ANY FURTHER AT THAT POINT IN TIME, AND SHE WAS HIRED ON AS A HOUSE GIRL FOR THE STOLZ FAMILY.” “MY DAD’S NAME WAS TOM, THOMAS SPENCE ALLEN, AND MY MOTHER WAS DOROTHY EMMA SCHIELS. MY DAD’S FAMILY - HIS FATHER AND, A FEW YEARS LATER MY DAD AND HIS MOTHER - CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910, AND THEY SETTLED IN NORTH LETHBRIDGE, AT 707 12A ST. NORTH. THERE WERE THREE BOYS AND ONE GIRL. THEY ALL WENT THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AT GALBRAITH HIGH SCHOOL, AND MY DAD WORKED FOR THE RAILWAYS. HE STARTED AS A MESSENGER…HE WAS 15 YEARS OF AGE. HE PROGRESSED IN THE FREIGHT CPR BUSINESS, AND BECAME A FREIGHT INSPECTOR IN LETHBRIDGE, AND THEN, IN 1948, WAS TRANSFERRED TO CALGARY. MY MOTHER WAS ALWAYS A HOUSEWIFE. THEY LIVED ON 3RD AVENUE NORTH, BY THE LEALTA THEATRE. THEY HAD JUST ONE CHILD. I GREW UP [IN THAT HOUSE] UNTIL I WAS ABOUT AGE FIVE. AT THAT TIME, THE END OF THE WAR WAS COMING, AND SOLDIERS WERE RETURNING. RENTAL HOUSING BECAME ALMOST NOT AVAILABLE. ANYBODY WHO WAS RENTING AT THAT TIME, IF YOU HADN’T BEEN IN THE FORCES, YOU WERE REQUIRED BY ORDINANCE TO FIND ANOTHER PLACE. IT WAS A HOUSE WHICH WE HAD TO GIVE UP. WE’D BEEN THERE SINCE I WAS BORN. THEN WE MOVED OVER TO 12TH STREET C, THE 500 BLOCK. WE LIVED TEMPORARILY THERE, AND THEN THAT HOUSE WAS SECONDED. WE WERE ONLY THERE MAYBE 6 MONTHS, AND THEN WE MOVED INTO AN ATTIC SPACE AT 507 12TH STREET A NORTH, AND LIVED IN THE 2 ROOMS IN THE ATTIC - NO INSULATION, AND VERY COLD IN THE WINTER, AND HOT IN THE SUMMER.” “[MY FATHER] GOT A PROMOTION [IN 1948]. HE GOT A PROMOTION TO CALGARY…A BETTER JOB.” “MY MOTHER AND DAD LIVED IN LETHBRIDGE, GREW UP IN LETHBRIDGE. MY MOTHER WAS THE COLLECTOR IN THE FAMILY. WHEN I WAS MARRIED [IN 1962], ALL OF THESE THINGS SHE GAVE ME TO JUST TAKE ALONG, BECAUSE THEY HAD BEEN GIVEN TO ME. THEY ARE JUST LITTLE ITEMS THAT WE JUST DON’T KNOW WHETHER THEY HAVE ANY VALUE, AND RATHER THAN HAVE THEM JUST GO TO LAND FILL, WE’D LIKE YOU TO HAVE A LOOK AT THEM.” “TODAY IS OUR FIFTY-FIFTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, AND WE’RE RETURNING TO LETHBRIDGE BECAUSE WE’VE HAD THESE THINGS IN OUR POSSESSION FOREVER, AND WE WANT TO SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY VALUE TO THE MUSEUM. THEY ARE RELICS THAT WE’VE [GATHERED] FROM PAST YEARS.” FOR MORE INFORMATION INCLUDING THE FULL INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION, PLEASE SEE THE PERMANENT FILE P20170023001-GA.

GLENN ALLEN WAS RAISED IN LETHBRIDGE, AND COLLECTED THE OBJECTS AS A CHILD IN LETHBRIDGE. ON THE RCMP FIGURINE, ALLEN RECALLED, “THESE TWO MOUNTED POLICE ITEMS, THE BANNER AND THE LITTLE STATUETTE…I WAS YOUNG, IN THE PERIOD FROM 1940-1945. LETHBRIDGE WAS A MAJOR BASE FOR THE COMMONWEALTH AIR TRAINING THING. WE HAD YOUNG BRITISH AIRMEN COME, AND THEY LIVED EVERYWHERE. THEY BOARDED WITH PEOPLE; THEY STAYED ON BASE, BUT WHEN THEY HAD A DAY OFF, IT WAS ONE OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PEOPLE OF LETHBRIDGE TO TAKE THEM ON LITTLE JOURNEYS TO PLACES. I CAN REMEMBER GOING WITH THEM…TO FORT MACLEOD, AND THEN TO PINCHER CREEK, AND WE HAD PLUMS AND CHERRIES. I CAN REMEMBER MY MOTHER BRINGING THIS BAG OF FRUIT OUT, AND SAYING TO THE ONE YOUNG FELLOW, “WOULD YOU LIKE A PIECE OF FRUIT?” HE WAS SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT, TURNED TO MY MOTHER [WHO] WAS DRIVING THE CAR, [THEN] HE TURNED TO HIS BUDDIES IN THE BACKSEAT, AND HE [SAID], “WOULD YOU LIKE A PLUM OR A CHERRY?” WE VISITED THERE, AND THOSE WERE GIFTS FROM THOSE AIRMEN TO ME, AT THAT TIME. I HAD A LITTLE MANTLE IN MY ROOM, DOWNSTAIRS IN CALGARY, AND HAD THEM THERE. WHEN WE WERE IN LETHBRIDGE, WE HAD NO SPACE AT ALL FOR ANYTHING. OUR FURNITURE HAD TO BE ALL STORED. THE ONLY POSSESSIONS OF OURS THAT WERE IN THAT HOUSE WERE OUR BEDS AND OUR DRESSERS, MAYBE A COUPLE OF CHAIRS…” “[I DISPLAYED THEM] MORE IN CALGARY, THAN LETHBRIDGE.” ALLEN ELABORATED ON HIS FAMILY’S HISTORY IN LETHBRIDGE, NOTING, “MY MOTHER’S FAMILY CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1923, AND SHE WAS ABOUT 12 AT THE TIME. FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE P20090016001 AND PERMANENT FILE. THIS BOOKLET AND NOTE WERE DONATED TO THE GALT THREE YEARS AFTER THE ORIGINAL WORK BOX AND CONTENTS DONATION. THE ITEMS WERE OFFERED TO GALT CURATOR WENDY AITKENS WHO, ON 20 JUNE 2012, BROUGHT THE ITEMS TO COLLECTIONS SAYING, “ARLENE STEELE (DONOR’S DAUGHTER) DROPPED THE BOOKLET OFF AT THE FRONT DESK. SHE PHONED A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER TO CHECK THAT I HAD RECEIVED IT. SHE TOLD ME SHE FOUND IT IN HER HOUSE BUT DOESN’T REMEMBER HOW IT GOT SEPARATED FROM THE MAUGHAM WORK BOX. ARLENE WAS FASCINATED BY THE CONTENTS OF THE BOX AS A CHILD AND REMEMBERS THE BOOKLET BEING IN IT. SHE ALSO REMEMBERS HER MOTHER, KATHERINE TWISS TELLING HER THAT MISS KIRK WAS A VERY RELIGIOUS PERSON.” *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING SOME ASSOCIATED WITH EDITH KIRK. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON KIRK, THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS BOOKLET, WAS DEVELOPED BY GALT CURATOR WENDY AITKENS IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2015 KIRK EXHIBIT AT THE GALT MUSEUM: "FOR 35 YEARS, LETHBRIDGE WAS THE HOME OF AN ACCOMPLISHED AND WELL KNOWN ARTIST AND ART TEACHER. EDITH FANNY KIRK, OR MISS KIRK AS MOST PEOPLE CALLED HER, CREATED WATER COLOUR LANDSCAPES OF ENGLAND, VANCOUVER, LETHBRIDGE, WATERTON, BANFF, AND JASPER. SHE TAUGHT MANY CHILDREN AND ADULTS THE SKILLS OF PAINTING. SHE ALSO SPOKE AT THE MATHESIS CLUB PERSENTING PAPERS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN ART, THE EVOLUTION OF ART AND ART APPRECIATION. JOAN STEBBINS, PAST CURATOR AT THE SAAG, CREDITS THE INFLUENCE OF MISS KIRK FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH (NOW ARTISTS') CLUB IN THE 1930S. WHEN MISS KIRK ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1918, SHE WAS 60 YEARS OLD. SHE WAS BORN IN 1858 AND WAS RAISED IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND. HER MOTHER, FANNY (NEE MAUGHAM) PASSED AWAY WHEN EDITH WAS A YOUNG GIRL AND HER FATHER REMARRIED. THE STORY, FROM SECOND HAND SOURCES, WAS THAT SHE AND HER STEP MOTHER DID NOT LIKE ONE ANOTHER. THIS PROVIDED TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE BECAUSE EDITH WAS SENT AWAY TO STUDY ART. EDITH STUDIED IN SOUTH KENSINGTON, LONDON AND PARIS. DURING HER SUMMERS SHE JOINED ARTIST'S COLONIES IN CORNWALL, WALES AND YORKSHIRE. SHE WROTE OF IMPRESSIONIST PAUL CEZANNE BEING HER "MODEL AND INSPIRATION" AND SHE GREATLY ADMIRED ROMANTIC ARTIST JOHN SELL COTMAN. KIRK NEVER MARRIED AND, FOR SOME REASON, SHE DECIDED TO IMMIGRATE TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 46. SHE ARRIVED IN HALIFAX ABOARD THE HMS CANADA IN APRIL 1905. THE PASSENGER LIST INDICATED SHE WAS TRAVELING ON TO VANCOUVER AND HER OCCUPATION WAS LISTED AS A GOVERNESS. IT SEEMS SHE DIDN'T STAY LONG IN VANCOUVER BUT SOON TRAVELLED TO ATLIN, B.C. TO GET TO ATLIN, KIRK WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SHIP TO SKAGWAY, THE WHITE PASS RAILWAY TO CARCROSS AND THEN AN OVERLAND AND BOAT TRIP TO ATLIN. IT IS A MYSTERY WHY SHE CHOSE TO GO TO A REMOTE GOLD RUSH TOWN IN NORTH WESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA. NEXT WE FIND KIRK, IN 1911, BOARDING WITH THE WOODS FAMILY IN LILLOOET, NORTHWEST OF KAMLOOPS, B.C. THERE SHE IS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER. SEVEN YEARS LATER EDITH KIRK IS IN LETHBRIDGE. IT SEEMS SHE KNEW PEOPLE LIVING IN TABER, DR. ALFRED HAMMAN AND HIS SISTER MRS. SYLVIA GIDMAN, WHO CAME FROM HER HOMELAND IN ENGLAND SO CHOSE VISIT. THE CHARM OF THE PRAIRIE AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA ENTICED HER TO STAY. MISS KIRK LIVED IN THE VICTORIA MANSION AND THE TRAVELLER'S AID SOCIETY BUILDING AND SHE TAUGHT ART CLASSES AT THE YMCA FOR A FEW DOLLARS A MONTH." EDITH KIRK PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1953. PHOTOS HUNG IN THE OLD EATON'S STORE IN LETHBRIDGE. WERE SALVAGED FROM THE DUMP WHEN EATON'S MOVED TO THE PARK PLACE MALL. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS. THE FOLLOWING BRIEF HISTORY OF LETHBRIDGE'S EATON'S STORE WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM GALT ARCHIVES AND LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM THE FALL OF 1988. THE T. EATON COMPANY WAS FOUNDED IN TORONTO IN 1869 BY TIMOTHY EATON. THE FIRST LETHBRIDGE EATON'S 'TECO' STORE WAS OPENED IN 1927 IN THE BASEMENT OF THE DOMINION BLOCK ON THE CORNER OF 4 AVENUE AND SIXTH STREET SOUTH. AFTER A FIRE, THE BUILDING WAS RENOVATED AND COMPLETELY TAKEN OVER BY THE EATON'S STORE, WHICH OPERATED IN THAT LOCATION UNDER PERIODIC RENOVATIONS FROM 1929 UNTIL THE OPENING OF THE PARK PLACE MALL IN 1988, IN WHICH EATON'S WAS AN ANCHOR RETAILER. IN 1989 A PORTION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE ART COLLECTION WAS TEMPORARILY PUT ON DISPLAY IN THE VACANT EATON'S BUILDING, AND PROPOSALS WERE MADE TO MAKE THE INSTALLATION PERMANENT, BUT EVENTUALLY THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD AND DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BANK OF MONTREAL BRANCH. IN 1999 THE EATON'S STORE IN PARK PLACE MALL CLOSED JUST PRIOR TO THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BANKRUPTCY OF THE LARGER T. EATON COMPANY LIMITED. SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR HARDCOPIES OF SOURCE MATERIAL.
