UKRAINIAN. EMBROIDERED IN JUROVA BY MARY VARZARI. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING THREE DONATED BY THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION OF LETHBRIDGE. THOUGH THE ASSOCIATION HAS DISBANDED, SHE WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS OBJECT AND 81 OTHERS DONATED BY THE ASSOCIATION IN 1973 WERE ORIGINALLY PART OF THE GALT MUSEUM'S 'UKRAINIAN ROOM' EXHIBIT. ACCORDING TO LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM 1969 AND 1976, AND PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GALT ARCHIVES (199110764419, 1991107612370, 199110764421, AND 199110764422) THE UKRAINIAN ROOM WAS INSTALLED IN 1966, WHEN THE MUSEUM WAS MOVED FROM THE BOWMAN CENTRE TO THE GALT HOSPITAL BUILDING. THE ROOM WAS FURNISHED WITH OBJECTS DONATED BY THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION, AND THE GROUP HELD ANNUAL TEAS THERE. THOUGH THE CATALOGUE NUMBERS OF THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION DONATION REFLECT A 1973 DONATION DATE, THE INITIAL ACQUISITION YEAR LISTED IN HARDCOPY FILES IS 1966, WHICH ALIGNS WITH THE OPENING DATE OF THE UKRAINIAN ROOM. IN ADDITION, ARCHIVAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ROOM DEPICT OBJECTS THAT ARE NOW HELD IN COLLECTIONS (P19738277001-GA, P19738277002-GA, AND P19738277003-GA CAN BE CLEARLY IDENTIFIED, WITH OTHER OBJECTS IDENTIFIED SPECULATIVELY). IN 1984 THE MUSEUM DISMANTLED ALL ITS DISPLAYS IN PREPARATION FOR THE BUILDING'S RENOVATION AND EXPANSION, AND ACCORDING TO BRAD BROWN, GALT EXHIBIT DESIGNER, WHEN THE FACILITY REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN 1985 ALL THE EXHIBITS HAD BEEN REWORKED, AND THE UKRAINIAN ROOM NO LONGER EXISTED. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF THE DONOR AND WEAVER OF THIS TOWEL, MAXIENE BODGENER, WAS PROVIDED BY BODGENER TO GALT CURATOR WENDY AITKENS AT THE TIME OF DONATION. BODGENER WAS BORN TO RACHEL “DOLLY” LONG AND WILFRED PERRIN. HER MOTHER DIED WHEN BODGENER WAS 18 MONTHS OLD, SO SHE WAS RAISED BY HER GRANDFATHER HENRY GEORGE LONG, AN EARLY SETTLER IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA WHO WORKED AT THE STOPPING HOUSE NEAR KIPP IN 1889. BODGENER’S AUNT ALICE AND UNCLE HARRY “BUSTER” LONG HELPED GRANDFATHER HENRY ON THE FAMILY RANCH SOUTH OF FORT MACLEOD, ALONG THE BELLY RIVER. BODGENER SPENT HER CAREER TEACHING HOME ECONOMICS AT F.P. WALSHE SCHOOL IN FORT MACLEOD, AND SEWED CLOTHES FOR HER FAMILY. IN HER RETIREMENT SHE LEARNED HOW TO WEAVE FABRIC. 13 YEARS LATER, IN 2001, BODGENER PURCHASED A $7000 COMPUTERIZED LE CLERC LOOM. THE LOOM HAS A ‘BLACK BOX’ THAT PROCESSES THE PATTERNS SHE DEVELOPS WITH SPECIALIZED COMPUTER SOFTWARE, TRANSMITTING DIRECTIONS TO THE LOOM. BODGENER HAS DESIGNED AND MADE TEA TOWELS, SCARVES, PLACEMATS, TABLE RUNNERS, HAND TOWELS, AND AFGHANS USING THIS PROCESS. SHE WEAVES FOR HER OWN ENJOYMENT AND SELLS HER PRODUCTS AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE. THE MOUNTIE TEA TOWEL, WHICH BODGENER SELLS FOR $11, IS CREATED WITH A PATTERN THAT BODGENER DESIGNED BY ASKING HER NEIGHBOUR, A RCMP OFFICER IN FORT MACLEOD, TO POSE IN HIS UNIFORM SO SHE COULD GET THE PROPORTIONS CORRECT. UPON THE COMPLETION OF THE PATTERN, BODGENER GAVE HIM A TOWEL AND HIS CO-OFFICERS AT THE DETACHMENT TEASED HIM ABOUT RECEIVING A TEA TOWEL. THIS TOWEL WAS INCLUDED IN THE EXHIBIT ‘WOVEN IN TIME – CELEBRATING 65 YEARS WITH LETHBRIDGE WEAVERS’, CURATED BY WENDY AITKENS, THAT RAN FROM JUNE 7 TO SEPTEMBER 1, 2014 AT THE GALT MUSEUM.

HER MOTHER, FANNY (NEE MAUGHAM) PASSED AWAY WHEN EDITH WAS A YOUNG GIRL AND HER FATHER REMARRIED. THE STORY, FROM SECOND HAND SOURCES, WAS THAT SHE AND HER STEP MOTHER DID NOT LIKE ONE ANOTHER. THIS PROVIDED TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE BECAUSE EDITH WAS SENT AWAY TO STUDY ART. EDITH STUDIED IN SOUTH KENSINGTON, LONDON AND PARIS. DURING HER SUMMERS SHE JOINED ARTIST'S COLONIES IN CORNWALL, WALES AND YORKSHIRE. SHE WROTE OF IMPRESSIONIST PAUL CEZANNE BEING HER "MODEL AND INSPIRATION" AND SHE GREATLY ADMIRED ROMANTIC ARTIST JOHN SELL COTMAN. KIRK NEVER MARRIED AND, FOR SOME REASON, SHE DECIDED TO IMMIGRATE TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 46. SHE ARRIVED IN HALIFAX ABOARD THE HMS CANADA IN APRIL 1905. THE PASSENGER LIST INDICATED SHE WAS TRAVELING ON TO VANCOUVER AND HER OCCUPATION WAS LISTED AS A GOVERNESS. IT SEEMS SHE DIDN'T STAY LONG IN VANCOUVER BUT SOON TRAVELLED TO ATLIN, B.C. TO GET TO ATLIN, KIRK WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SHIP TO SKAGWAY, THE WHITE PASS RAILWAY TO CARCROSS AND THEN AN OVERLAND AND BOAT TRIP TO ATLIN. IT IS A MYSTERY WHY SHE CHOSE TO GO TO A REMOTE GOLD RUSH TOWN IN NORTH WESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA. NEXT WE FIND KIRK, IN 1911, BOARDING WITH THE WOODS FAMILY IN LILLOOET, NORTHWEST OF KAMLOOPS, B.C. THERE SHE IS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER. SEVEN YEARS LATER EDITH KIRK IS IN LETHBRIDGE. IT SEEMS SHE KNEW PEOPLE LIVING IN TABER, DR. ALFRED HAMMAN AND HIS SISTER MRS. SYLVIA GIDMAN, WHO CAME FROM HER HOMELAND IN ENGLAND SO CHOSE VISIT. THE CHARM OF THE PRAIRIE AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA ENTICED HER TO STAY. MISS KIRK LIVED IN THE VICTORIA MANSION AND THE TRAVELLER'S AID SOCIETY BUILDING AND SHE TAUGHT ART CLASSES AT THE YMCA FOR A FEW DOLLARS A MONTH." EDITH KIRK PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1953. ACCORDING TO THE DONOR, KATHERINE IVES TWISS, SHE GOT THE BOX FROM EDITH KIRK. SHE SAID, "IT WAS HER MOTHER'S BOX. MISS KIRK GAVE IT TO MY MOTHER [ETTA HENDERSON IVES] TO GIVE TO ME." TWISS WAS GIVEN THE BOX BECAUSE SHE WAS A "STUDENT AND FRIEND" OF KIRK. THE DONATION WAS BROUGHT IN BY TWISS'S DAUGHTER, K.A. STEEL, IN HER LETTER SHE WRITES, "WHEN MISS KIRK PASSED AWAY SHE LEFT AN ANTIQUE JEWELLERY-TYPE BOX... TO TWISS.... MISS KIRK SAYS THAT THE BOX BELONGED TO HER MOTHER AND WAS OVER 100 YEARS OLD. MOST OF ITS CONTENTS WERE VERY OLD AND BROKEN DOWN, BUT VERY INTERESTING. THIS BOX WAS THE ONLY POSSESSION THAT MISS KIRK HAD, AND SHE MUST HAVE LOVED IT DEARLY. MARGARET TOOK LESSONS BUT DIDN'T LOVE ART. KATHARINE LOVED ART AND WAS GIVEN MANY, MANY LESSONS. JOAN STEBBINS, PAST CURATOR AT THE SAAG, CREDITS THE INFLUENCE OF MISS KIRK FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LETHBRIDGE SKETCH (NOW ARTISTS') CLUB IN THE 1930S. WHEN MISS KIRK ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1918, SHE WAS 60 YEARS OLD. SHE WAS BORN IN 1858 AND WAS RAISED IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND. HER MOTHER, FANNY (NEE MAUGHAM) PASSED AWAY WHEN EDITH WAS A YOUNG GIRL AND HER FATHER REMARRIED. THE STORY, FROM SECOND HAND SOURCES, WAS THAT SHE AND HER STEP MOTHER DID NOT LIKE ONE ANOTHER. THIS PROVIDED TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE BECAUSE EDITH WAS SENT AWAY TO STUDY ART. EDITH STUDIED IN SOUTH KENSINGTON, LONDON AND PARIS. DURING HER SUMMERS SHE JOINED ARTIST'S COLONIES IN CORNWALL, WALES AND YORKSHIRE. SHE WROTE OF IMPRESSIONIST PAUL CEZANNE BEING HER "MODEL AND INSPIRATION" AND SHE GREATLY ADMIRED ROMANTIC ARTIST JOHN SELL COTMAN. KIRK NEVER MARRIED AND, FOR SOME REASON, SHE DECIDED TO IMMIGRATE TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 46. SHE ARRIVED IN HALIFAX ABOARD THE HMS CANADA IN APRIL 1905. THE PASSENGER LIST INDICATED SHE WAS TRAVELING ON TO VANCOUVER AND HER OCCUPATION WAS LISTED AS A GOVERNESS. IT SEEMS SHE DIDN'T STAY LONG IN VANCOUVER BUT SOON TRAVELLED TO ATLIN, B.C. TO GET TO ATLIN, KIRK WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SHIP TO SKAGWAY, THE WHITE PASS RAILWAY TO CARCROSS AND THEN AN OVERLAND AND BOAT TRIP TO ATLIN. IT IS A MYSTERY WHY SHE CHOSE TO GO TO A REMOTE GOLD RUSH TOWN IN NORTH WESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA. NEXT WE FIND KIRK, IN 1911, BOARDING WITH THE WOODS FAMILY IN LILLOOET, NORTHWEST OF KAMLOOPS, B.C. THERE SHE IS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER. SEVEN YEARS LATER EDITH KIRK IS IN LETHBRIDGE. IT SEEMS SHE KNEW PEOPLE LIVING IN TABER, DR. ALFRED HAMMAN AND HIS SISTER MRS. SYLVIA GIDMAN, WHO CAME FROM HER HOMELAND IN ENGLAND SO CHOSE VISIT. THE CHARM OF THE PRAIRIE AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA ENTICED HER TO STAY. HE WORKED FOR THE CITY AS ZOO KEEPER AT THE EXHIBITION GROUNDS AND FOR THE ALBERTA RAILROAD AND IRRIGATION COMPANY BEFORE BEGINNING HIS 35 YEAR CAREER WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND COMMERCE IN 1913. GIBSON SERVED WITH THE 25TH BATTERY CANADIAN FIELD ARTILLERY FROM 1908 TO 1914 AND FROM 1914 TO 1919 HE SERVED IN ENGLAND IN FRANCE WITH THE 20TH BATTERY CFA. HE WAS ALSO VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY AS A MEMBER OF THE KIWANIS CLUB, ALLIED ARTS COUNCIL, LETHBRIDGE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY, PLAYGOERS OF LETHBRIDGE, ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, PEMMICAN CLUB, MASONIC LODGE, AND THE GALT HOSPITAL BOARD. HE AND HIS WIFE LINDA WERE HEAVILY INFLUENTIAL IN THE RED CROSS SOCIETY’S LETHRBIDGE CHAPTER, AND HAD TWO CHILDREN, FRED AND DORIS. CHRISTIAN GIBSON PASSED AWAY ON MARCH 26, 1971. IN 2010 HIS DAUGHTER, DORIS BALCOVSKE, PARTICIPATED IN THE GALT MUSEUM’S FIRST ‘TREASURES & CURIOSITIES’ EXHIBIT BY SELECTING ONE OF HER FATHER’S PAINTINGS TO BE DISPLAYED. HARDIE WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM A TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM THE JUNE 16, 1942 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. WILLIAM DUNCAN LIVINGSTONE HARDIE WAS BORN NEAR EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND IN 1862, AND THE FAMILY IMMIGRATED TO OHIO THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IN 1885 HARDIE MARRIED MARGARET KIRTLEY, AND THEY HAD FIVE CHILDREN: IANTHE, AGNES, E.W., JESSE, AND INZOLA. HARDIE FIRST CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1889, WHEN HE BECAME THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GALT NO. 1 MINE. AFTER FOUR YEARS HE RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES, WORKING FOR MINING COMPANIES IN PENNSYLVANIA, TENNESSEE, AND ALABAMA BEFORE RETURNING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1896 AS SUPERINTENDENT OF NORTHWEST COAL & NAVIGATION COMPANY. IN 1910 HARDIE LEFT THE GALT-OWNED COMPANY AND WORKED AS THE MANAGER OF THE DIAMOND COAL COMPANY UNTIL 1912, WHEN HE RAN FOR AND WON THE OFFICE OF LETHBRIDGE MAYOR. HARDIE SERVED AS MAYOR UNTIL 1928, WHEN HE WAS REPLACED BY ROBERT BARROWMAN. IN 1930 HARDIE HAD AN UNSUCCESSFUL RUN FOR THE LETHBRIDG SEAT IN THE PROVINCIAL GENERAL ELECTION. HARDIE WAS ACTIVE WITH THE LETHBRIDGE MASONS, THE ALBERTA UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES, AND HAD AN AVID INTEREST IN ASTROLOGY. HARDIEVILLE, THE FORMER HAMLET NORTHEAST OF LETHBRIDGE THAT WAS ANNEXED BY THE CITY IN 1978, WAS NAMED AFTER HIM. W. D. L. HARDIE DIED ON JUNE 16, 1942. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF THE MAN DEPICTED IN THIS MEMORIAL PLAQUE, JOB REED, WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM AN ARTICLE ON THE REED FAMILY AND FARM FROM THE DECEMBER 30, 1985 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, REED'S DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT FROM 1906, AND THE GALT ARCHIVES. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. THE COUPLE RETURNED TO ENGLAND, BUT REED'S MEDICAL TRAINING WAS NOT RECOGNIZED THERE, AND IN 1882 THEY CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AGAIN, MOVING WEST ACROSS CANADA IN STAGES, FINALLY ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1886. THE FAMILY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: RICHARD, HENRY, ELIZABETH (WHO MARRIED GEORGE HERBERT WATSON), JOB JUNIOR (KNOWN AS BUDD), GEORGE, ANNIE, AND ELLA. REED PURCHASED TWO LOTS ON WHAT IS NOW 6TH AVENUE SOUTH. THE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED A MARKET GARDEN ON THE PROPERY, AND BUILT A STONE DUPLEX THAT STILL STANDS ON THE 1200 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. REED WORKED AS A COAL MINER TO EARN MORE MONEY TOWARDS INVESTING IN FURTHER LAND, AND RAISED PIGS WITH SCRAP FOOD FROM THE NEARBY RCMP BARRACKS. IN 1901, REED PURCHASED 2.5 SECTIONS OF LAND NEAR PRESENT-DAY GRANUM WITH HIS FOUR SONS AND ONE SON-IN-LAW; HIS SON BILLY LATER TOOK OVER THIS RANCH. REED WAS A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE IN LETHBRIDGE AND A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD. IN EARLY 1906, HE PURCHASED EDGEHILL FARM, NEAR SIX MILE COULEE, BUT HE DIED LATER THAT YEAR ON APRIL 25. MARY REED LIVED AT THE FARM FOR YEARS AFTERWARD, AND DIED IN KELOWNA, B.C. IN 1932 AT HOME OF ONE OF HER SONS. BOTH JOB AND MARY REED ARE BURIED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY IN LETHBRIDGE. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. DORIS BALCOVSKE (NEE GIBSON) IS THE DAUGHTER OF CHRISTIAN GIBSON AND LINDA VICTORIA GIBSON (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). LINDA VICTORIA GIBSON (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN) WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON SEPTEMBER 5, 1886 AND WAS MARRIED IN EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND ON JUNE 29, 1918 TO CHRISTIAN GIBSON. SHE MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN SEPTEMBER 1919. ACCORDING TO HER OBITUARY, LINDA WAS INVOLVED IN NUMEROUS ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT LETHBRIDGE INCLUDING: “THE MAJOR JACK ROSS CHAPTER OF THE IODE, PAST REGENT OF THE MUNICIPAL CHAPTER OF THE IODE, A FORMER MEMBER OF THE EASTERN STAR, A FORMER MEMBER OF LOBA, AN HONOURARY MEMBER OF THE BETA SIGMA PHI SOCIETY, A MEMBER OF THE LOCAL COUNCIL OF GIRL GUIDES, CANADIAN RED CROSS, AND ST. AUGUSTINE’S WA.” LINDA PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 78 IN AUGUST 1965. CHRISTIAN “CHRIS” GIBSON WAS BORN IN BELFAST, IRELAND IN 1887, WAS RAISED AND EDUCATED IN THE LONDON, ENGLAND AREA, AND ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE, AB IN JUNE 1908. HE HELD A NUMBER OF POSITIONS AFTER HIS ARRIVAL IN THE CITY, INCLUDING: DISTRICT CLERK FOR ALBERTA RAILWAYS AND IRRIGATION COMPANY; MANAGER OF FAIR GROUNDS FOR THE WORLD DRY FARMING CONGRESS IN 1912; OPERATOR OF THE CITY ZOO; A POSITION WITH THE WEIGHTS AND MEASURES OFFICE, WHICH INVOLVED TESTING SCALES AND GASOLINE PUMPS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH. UPON HIS ARRIVAL IN THE CITY, CHRIS ALSO JOINED THE MILITIA AND IN 1914 ENLISTED WITH THE 20TH BATTERY, CANADIAN FIELD ARTILLERY. HE SERVED FOR 5 YEARS AS PAYMASTER, EVENTUALLY REACHING THE RANK OF CAPTAIN. IN 1930, CHRIS RECEIVED THE VICTORIA DECORATION, FOR LONG SERVICE AS AN OFFICER. CHRIS AND LINDA WERE BOTH HEAVILY INVOLVED IN THE LETHBRIDGE BRANCH OF THE RED CROSS. CHRIS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 83 ON MARCH 26, 1971. HE WAS SURVIVED BY HIS SISTER, MAMIE GRACE ELLEN GIBSON. MAMIE GRACE ELLEN GIBSON WAS BORN IN THE COUNTY OF SURREY, ENGLAND ON JULY 29, 1892, THE ONLY DAUGHTER OF JOHN ANDREW AITKEN GIBSON AND LOUISA MARIA GIBSON (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). IN 1910, SHE MOVED WITH HER PARENTS AND HER BROTHER FRED TO JOIN HER OTHER BROTHER CHRISTIAN. HER FATHER PASSED AWAY IN 1912 AND HER MOTHER IN 1943. MAMIE PASSED AT THE AGE OF 102 ON NOVEMBER 11, 1994. CONNECTIONS MADE WITH THE NEXT-OF-KIN TO ACQUIRE FURTHER ARTIFACT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. DORIS BALCOVSKE'S OBITUARY WAS FOUND ON THE CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME'S WEBPAGE. IT STATES THAT SHE WAS BORN IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1923. SHE WORKED FOR THE BANK OF MONTREAL FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL. SHE THEN WENT ON TO BECOME THE PROPRIETOR OF MARGO LADIES WEAR THROUGH THE 1950'S. SHE MARRIED HERB BALCOVSKE AND TOGETHER THEY HAD SANDRA BALCOVSKE AND MARCIA TAYLOR. DORIS PASSED AWAY ON 14 SEPTEMBER 2016 AT THE AGE OF 92 YEARS.
