THE LINES ARE EXCERPTED FROM A POEM WRITTEN BY ALFRED LORD TENNYSON FOR THE OPENING OF THE 1886 COLONIAL AND INDIAN EXHIBITION, HELD IN LONDON. THE EXHIBITION FOLLOWED THE 'WORLD'S FAIR' FORMAT, WHICH WAS HIGHLY POPULAR AT THE TIME, AND FEATURED DISPLAYS FROM NATIONS COLONIZED UNDER THE BRITISH EMPIRE. THE PRINCE OF WALES COMMISSIONED TENNYSON TO WRITE THE WELCOMING POEM TO BE READ AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE EXHIBITION BY QUEEN VICTORIA. THE POEM PRAISES THE STRENGTH OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE AND INVOKES THE IMAGE OF THE BRITISH FLAG.
