SEE P19920020001-GA FOR DONOR HISTORY. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING ONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REED FAMILY. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF JOB REED WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM AN ARTICLE ON THE REED FAMILY AND FARM FROM THE DECEMBER 30, 1985 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, REED'S DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT FROM 1906, AND THE GALT ARCHIVES. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. THE COUPLE RETURNED TO ENGLAND, BUT REED'S MEDICAL TRAINING WAS NOT RECOGNIZED THERE, AND IN 1882 THEY CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AGAIN, MOVING WEST ACROSS CANADA IN STAGES, FINALLY ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1886. THE FAMILY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: RICHARD, HENRY, ELIZABETH (WHO MARRIED GEORGE HERBERT WATSON), JOB JUNIOR (KNOWN AS BUDD), GEORGE, ANNIE, AND ELLA. REED PURCHASED TWO LOTS ON WHAT IS NOW 6TH AVENUE SOUTH. THE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED A MARKET GARDEN ON THE PROPERY, AND BUILT A STONE DUPLEX THAT STILL STANDS ON THE 1200 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. REED WORKED AS A COAL MINER TO EARN MORE MONEY TOWARDS INVESTING IN FURTHER LAND, AND RAISED PIGS WITH SCRAP FOOD FROM THE NEARBY RCMP BARRACKS. IN 1901, REED PURCHASED 2.5 SECTIONS OF LAND NEAR PRESENT-DAY GRANUM WITH HIS FOUR SONS AND ONE SON-IN-LAW; HIS SON BILLY LATER TOOK OVER THIS RANCH. REED WAS A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE IN LETHBRIDGE AND A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD. IN EARLY 1906, HE PURCHASED EDGEHILL FARM, NEAR SIX MILE COULEE, BUT HE DIED LATER THAT YEAR ON APRIL 25. MARY REED LIVED AT THE FARM FOR YEARS AFTERWARD, AND DIED IN KELOWNA, B.C. IN 1932 AT HOME OF ONE OF HER SONS. BOTH JOB AND MARY REED ARE BURIED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY IN LETHBRIDGE. MARY WAS BORN IN CLAYTON, ONTARIO IN 1905 AND MOVED TO ENCHANT, ALBERTA WITH HER FAMILY IN 1917. AFTER COMPLETING A BUSINESS COURSE IN CALGARY SHE WORKED FOR THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE IN STAVELY. MARY MARRIED EARL WAGNESS IN STAVELY IN 1929, AND OVER THE 61 YEARS OF THEIR MARRIAGE THEY LIVED THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN ALBERTA, MOVING FOR EARL'S WORK WITH THE ALBERTA PACIFIC GRAIN COMPANY. THEY RETIRED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1956. MARY WAS ACTIVE IN CURLING, THE ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR, CHURCH CHOIR, AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER WORK. EARL RANDOLPH WAGNESS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 84 ON NOVEMBER 23, 1990. HE WAS THE SON OF MARTIN WAGNESS AND CAROLINA WAGNESS (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). THE FOLLOWING DETAILS ABOUT THE DONORS, NICK AND ANN BORDENIUK, AND THE ORIGIN OF THE OBJECTS INCLUDED IN THEIR 1977 DONATION WERE FOUND IN A HANDWRITTEN NOTE FROM THE DONORS IN THE PERMANENT FILE. NICK BORDENIUK WAS BORN IN CZERNIWICI, UKRAINE ON MAY 20, 1895. HE FIRST CAME TO QUEBEC IN 1913, WORKING AS A MINER AND ON VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION SITES INCLUDING THAT OF THE ST. LAWRENCE BRIDGE IN 1916. IN 1922 HE ARRIVED IN LETHBRIDGE AND WORKED AT THE NO. 6 MINE. IN 1940 HE MOVED TO FERNIE, B.C. AND WORKED IN COAL CREEK UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1958. ANN BORDENIUK WAS BORN IN LWOW, UKRAINE AND MOVED TO HILLCREST, ALBERTA IN 1936. SHE ALSO MOVED TO FERNIE AND MARRIED NICK THERE IN 1955. IN 1976 THE BORDENIUKS MOVED FROM THEIR HOME INTO TOM UPHILL MANOR IN FERNIE, AND DONATED THEIR COLLECTION OF UKRAINIAN OBJECTS TO THE GALT MUSEUM. THE REGALIA REPRESENTED TAYLOR’S 50-YEAR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ORDER OF ROYAL PURPLE FROM BRANDON, MANITOBA TO LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA. WHEN ASKED ABOUT HER MOTHER’S BLAZER, WOOD RECALLED, “[MY MOTHER WAS WEARING THIS] WITHIN THE [PAST] TWO OR THREE YEARS, AS YOU CAN SEE, SHE HAD IT ON WHEN SHE RECEIVED HER 50 YEAR PIN. I THINK SHE WENT TO ONE MORE ACTIVITY BEFORE SHE COULDN’T ANYMORE BECAUSE SHE’S BEEN WHEELCHAIR BOUND FOR 15 YEARS. IF A LADY PASSED AWAY, YOU’D DRY-CLEAN HER JACKET, AND PUT IT INTO THE CUPBOARD…PROBABLY ABOUT 1985 THEY STARTED REPLACING THE JACKETS. I KNOW [THIS WAS DOROTHY’S JACKET] ORIGINALLY, IT HAD PIPING ON IT, AND…IT HAD BRANDON. SHE WORE THE BRANDON [BADGE] ON IT – THEN, SHE OBVIOUSLY GOT THE NEW JACKET MADE, AND THEN PUT THE [PATCH] ON HER POCKETS. IN THOSE DAYS, BEFORE I JOINED ROYAL PURPLE, YOU HAD A PATCH. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. ADDITIONALLY, HE VISITED THE GALT IN SEPTEMBER 2009, MEETING WITH COLLECTIONS TECH KEVIN MACLEAN, IN ORDER TO ANSWER QUESTIONS STILL NOT ANSWERED IN THE LETTER. THE NARRATIVE BELOW IS A COMBINATION OF THE LETTER, ON FILE, AND INFORMATION SOLICITED DURING THE 2009 VISIT. ACCORDING TO THE DONOR, HIS FATHER, LAWRENCE WYOMING TRONE, WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE VETERANS GUARD OF CANADA, HAVING GUARDED GERMAN PRISONERS-OF-WAR AT CAMP SEEBEE IN WHAT IS TODAY KANANASKIS, AB. THEREAFTER, HIS LAWRENCE WAS EMPLOYED AT THE NO. 8 BOMBING & GUNNERY SCHOOL IN LETHBRIDGE AS A SENTRY AS WELL AS PERFORMING KITCHEN AND BOILER ROOM WORK. WHILE AT THE SCHOOL, “HE [THE SENIOR TRONE] BEFRIENDED A COUPLE OF AIRMEN IN TRAINING (AN AUSTRALIAN AND A NEW ZEALANDER) THROUGH MUSIC”. THE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALANDER ADDITIONALLY GAVE THE DONOR’S MOTHER EXTRA FOOD STUFFS AND SHE, IN RETURN, PROVIDED THE AIRMEN WITH A HOME-COOKED MEAL. THE DONOR BELIEVED THE BOOTS WERE GIFTED TO HIM IN ORDER TO IMPROVE HIS COMFORT (OVERSHOES) ON HIS TRAVELS TO AND FROM SCHOOL. THE EDGES OF CAPELET ARE TRIMMED IN A WIDE BLACK LACE (DIFFERENT FROM ABOVE). BACK OF PIECE IS LINED WITH A BURLAP MATERIAL, UNDERNEATH BLACK COTTON. MANY BRAIDS, HIS WIFE, BABY AND TEENAGE DAUGHTER WERE KILLED IN THE CONFLICT, WHICH WAS WITNESSED BY JOHN HEALY. BEFORE HE DIED, MANY BRAIDS ASKED JOHN HEALY TO TAKE CARE OF HIS SON, FLYING CHIEF, THE ONLY SURVIVING MEMBER OF THE FAMILY. JOHN HEALY GAVE THE EIGHT YEAR OLD BOY THE NAME JOE HEALY, AND KEPT HIM AT THE TRADING POST UNTIL THE SUMMER, WHEN HE WAS ENROLLED IN THE SCHOOL AT NEARBY FORT SHAW. THERE JOE DEVELOPED HIS KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH. IN 1869, WHILE JOE WAS IN SCHOOL, HEALY AND HAMILTON WENT NORTH AND OPENED A TRADING POST AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE OLDMAN AND ST. IN LATER YEARS HE CO-ORDINATED FIRST NATIONS' PARTICIPATION IN THE LETHBRIDGE EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE. JOE HEALY DIED AT ST. PAUL'S MISSION ON THE BLOOD RESERVE IN 1936 AS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED PATRIARCHS OF THE BLOOD TRIBE.

BAND IS PURPLE NYLON WITH GOLD STITCHING IN SIMPLE LINED PATTERN. AT CENTER IS ALTERNATING DIAMOND AND CROSS MOTIFS, WHICH ARE MADE OF FELT SEWN TO BAND. ON BACK BAND GOES UP CENTER AND SPLITS INTO THREE WITH THE TWO OUTER ARMS EXTENDING TO SHOULDERS. SAME PATTERN IS ON FRONT AS WELL EXCEPT FOR OVAL PATCH AT JUNCTION OF ARMS. PATCH HAS GOLD AND BLACK EMBROIDERY. IT HAS STYLIZED CHI-RHO WITH STYLIZED ALPHA AND OMEGA BENEATH IT. SEWN ON INSIDE OF CHASUBLE ARE TWO LABELS. ONE IS WHITE WITH RED PRINTING WHICH READS "BY GOSPARD CREATORS OF LITURGICAL ART WINNIPEG CANADA". THE OTHER IS BLACK AND RED AND READS "ORNEMENTS D'ENGLISE GLOIRE CONFECTIONNES AU CANADA". CAPE HAS LIGHT PURPLE EDGING AS WELL.

BLACK VELVET. HAS A HIGH, STRAIGHT CUT NECKLINE (BOAT NECKLINE). NECKLINE IS GATHERED IN THE FRONT AT THE SHOULDERS. SKIRT IS SLIGHTLY FLARED. HAS 3/4 LENGTH SLEEVES MADE OF A SHEER BLACK FABRIC WITH BLACK VELVET DESIGNS ON IT. CUFFS ARE CUT IN A V-SHAPE, SO TOPSIDE IS LONGER THAN BOTTOM SIDE. CUFFS CLOSE WITH A SMALL, METAL SNAP. BACK OF DRESS HAS A SLIT FROM NECKLINE TO CENTER BACK; SLIT CLOSES AT NECKLINE WITH A PLASTIC, SILVER BUTTON SHAPED LIKE A FLOWER. BUTTON HAS A CLEAR GEM IN THE CENTER. DRESS HAS A LOOP OF THREAD ON EACH SIDE, THROUGH WHICH IS A BELT. BELT IS A STRIP OF BLACK POLYESTER?, WITH PEACH COLOURED ENDS. ONE END OF BELT IS FRAYED. DRESS HAS LOOSE THREADS THROUGHOUT. A RIP IN SKIRT HAS BEEN LOOSELY REPAIRED. DRESS IS CUT ON THE BIAS.

WAISTBAND AND TOP HALF OF SKIRT HAVE WHITE EMBROIDERED FLOWERS ON THEM WITH TINY CUTOUTS. ABOVE AND BELOW WAISTBAND, DRESS HAS NARROW PLEATS. ELBOW LENGTH SLEEVES END WITH A SCALLOPED EDGE. BOTTOM OF SKIRT HAS A STRAIGHT SOLID BAND AROUND IT. NECKLINE HAS A CROCHETED TRIM AROUND IT. BACK OF DRESS IS OPEN FROM NECKLINE TO HALFWAY DOWN SKIRT; THIS CLOSES WITH NUMEROUS HOOKS AND EYES. TOP OF DRESS IS BEGINNING TO YELLOW. DRESS HAS NUMEROUS TEARS.
