ARTHUR DUFF WAS BORN AND RAISED IN STORMONT COUNTY, ONTARIO. HE MOVED WEST TO CRANBROOK IN 1907 BEFORE GOING OVERSEAS TO SERVE IN WORLD WAR I. UPON HIS RETURN, HE FARMED IN SANGUDO, ALBERTA BEFORE MOVING BACK TO CRANBROOK IN 1921. IN 1928, HE MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE, WHERE HE WAS EMPLOYED BY BECKER LUMBER COMPANY. HE WAS MARRIED TO LOIS JUNE DUFF (NEE CORNWALL). ACCORDING TO LOIS DUFF’S LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARY, SHE WAS BORN IN MOINES, IOWA ON JUNE 26, 1904. THE FAMILY MOVED TO A FARM EAST OF MILK RIVER, ALBERTA IN 1908, THEN MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE 1919. SHE LIVED IN THE CITY FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. THE CORNWALL FAMILY HISTORY SHE CONTRIBUTED IN THE PIONEER PEMMICAN CLUB ROUNDUP HISTORY BOOK (PUBLISHED IN 1984) STATES, “MY PARENTS, HERBERT AND ELLA CORNWALL AND THEIR FIVE CHILDREN – BERNICE, BEATRICE, BARTLEY, GERTRUDE, AND I (LOIS JUNE) CAME FROM DES MOINES TO WARNER IN NOVEMBER 1908. DAD AND BARTLEY FILED ON HOMESTEADS TEN MILES EAST OF MILK RIVER. THE FAMILY MOVED TO THE FARM IN THE SPRING OF 1910. I CAN REMEMBER SEEING BUFFALO BONES AND THOSE RANGE CATTLE SCATTERED OVER THE PRAIRIE.” THE NARRATIVE CONTINUED, “ON THE FARM WE HAD A LARGE TWO AND A HALF STOREY HOUSE WHICH SERVED AS A STOPPING PLACE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE LUCKY STRIKE AND KIPPENVILLE AREAS BEFORE THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT TO FOREMOST AND MANYBERRIES. IT TOOK MEN FROM THOSE AREAS A DAY TO REACH OUR PLACE WITH A TEAM OF HORSES. THEY WOULD GO TO MILK RIVER AND BACK TO OUR PLACE THE SECOND DAY, THEN LEAVE FOR HOME THE THIRD DAY. WHAT A RELIEF IT WAS FOR THEM WHEN THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT!” “SLEEPY HOLLOW SCHOOL WAS BUILT IN 1912 AND, LIKE ALL SUCH STRUCTURES SERVED ALSO CHURCH SERVICES, MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENT. GRADES ONE TO TEN WERE TAUGHT IN THIS SCHOOL. IN THE FALL OF 1919 DAD, MOTHER AND I MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE SO THAT I COULD CONTINUE MY HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION AND ATTEND GARBUTT BUSINESS COLLEGE. I WORKED IN THE OFFICES OF RYLAND’S LADIES WEAR AND THE BECKER LUMBER COMPANY… I MARRIED ARTHUR DUFF IN 1934. OUR SON GRANT WAS BORN IN 1936.” ARTHUR DUFF PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE ON SEPTEMBER 15, 1976 AT THE AGE OF 85 YEARS. LOIS DUFF PASSED AWAY ON MARCH 18, 2004 AT THE AGE OF 99 YEARS. MUSEUM OBTAINED ITEMS FROM LETHBRIDGE EATON'S STORE IN 1999. DUE TO COMPANY BANKRUPTCY, EATON'S STORES ACROSS CANADA WERE CLOSED, INCLUDING THE LETHBRIDGE LOCATION IN PARK PLACE MALL. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH THE T. EATON COMPANY STORES IN LETHBRIDGE. THE FOLLOWING BRIEF HISTORY OF LETHBRIDGE'S EATON'S STORE WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM GALT ARCHIVES AND LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM THE FALL OF 1988. THE T. EATON COMPANY WAS FOUNDED IN TORONTO IN 1869 BY TIMOTHY EATON. THE FIRST LETHBRIDGE EATON'S 'TECO' STORE WAS OPENED IN 1927 IN THE BASEMENT OF THE DOMINION BLOCK ON THE CORNER OF 4 AVENUE AND SIXTH STREET SOUTH. AFTER A FIRE, THE BUILDING WAS RENOVATED AND COMPLETELY TAKEN OVER BY THE EATON'S STORE, WHICH OPERATED IN THAT LOCATION UNDER PERIODIC RENOVATIONS FROM 1929 UNTIL THE OPENING OF THE PARK PLACE MALL IN 1988, IN WHICH EATON'S WAS AN ANCHOR RETAILER. IN 1989 A PORTION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE ART COLLECTION WAS TEMPORARILY PUT ON DISPLAY IN THE VACANT EATON'S BUILDING, AND PROPOSALS WERE MADE TO MAKE THE INSTALLATION PERMANENT, BUT EVENTUALLY THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD AND DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BANK OF MONTREAL BRANCH. IN 1999 THE EATON'S STORE IN PARK PLACE MALL CLOSED JUST PRIOR TO THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BANKRUPTCY OF THE LARGER T. EATON COMPANY LIMITED. RECTANGULAR, GREEN. RAISED ON FOUR LEGS, WITH ZIG-ZAG EDGES. LEGS ARE CUT OUT OF SAME PIECE OF METAL AS BASE OF STOVE. BURNER COVERS ARE FIVE RODS OF METAL, THREE LAID PERPENDICULAR, ON TOP OF OTHER TWO. HEATING ELEMENTS, UNDERNEATH BURNER COVERS, ARE ROUND. A BLACK CYLINDER IS HOOKED TO ONE SIDE OF STOVE. A METAL TUBE GOES FROM TOP OF CYLINDER, INTO STOVE AND ABOVE ONE OF THE HEATING ELEMENTS. AT THE END OF THIS TUBE (ON OUTSIDE OF STOVE) IS A BLACK KNOB THAT HAS "CLOSE" AND AN ARROW EMBOSSED ON IT. ONE END OF BLACK CYLINDER HAS A SILVER KNOB THAT HAS "CLOSE" AND AN ARROW ETCHED INTO IT. BLACK CYLINDER ALSO HAS A LABEL ON IT, THAT IS VERY WORN. IT HAS A RED SETTING SUN AT THE TOP, BELOW WHICH READS "COLEMAN", ETC.. THERE IS ANOTHER BLACK KNOB FOR OTHER BURNER WITH "CLOSE" AND AN ARROW EMBOSSED ON IT.

HARDIE WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM A TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM THE JUNE 16, 1942 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. WILLIAM DUNCAN LIVINGSTONE HARDIE WAS BORN NEAR EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND IN 1862, AND THE FAMILY IMMIGRATED TO OHIO THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IN 1885 HARDIE MARRIED MARGARET KIRTLEY, AND THEY HAD FIVE CHILDREN: IANTHE, AGNES, E.W., JESSE, AND INZOLA. HARDIE FIRST CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1889, WHEN HE BECAME THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GALT NO. 1 MINE. AFTER FOUR YEARS HE RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES, WORKING FOR MINING COMPANIES IN PENNSYLVANIA, TENNESSEE, AND ALABAMA BEFORE RETURNING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1896 AS SUPERINTENDENT OF NORTHWEST COAL & NAVIGATION COMPANY. IN 1910 HARDIE LEFT THE GALT-OWNED COMPANY AND WORKED AS THE MANAGER OF THE DIAMOND COAL COMPANY UNTIL 1912, WHEN HE RAN FOR AND WON THE OFFICE OF LETHBRIDGE MAYOR. HARDIE SERVED AS MAYOR UNTIL 1928, WHEN HE WAS REPLACED BY ROBERT BARROWMAN. IN 1930 HARDIE HAD AN UNSUCCESSFUL RUN FOR THE LETHBRIDG SEAT IN THE PROVINCIAL GENERAL ELECTION. HARDIE WAS ACTIVE WITH THE LETHBRIDGE MASONS, THE ALBERTA UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES, AND HAD AN AVID INTEREST IN ASTROLOGY. HARDIE, THE FATHER OF THE DONOR OF THIS ARTIFACT, JESSE MAXWELL OVERTON HARDIE. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF W. D. L. HARDIE WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM A TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM THE JUNE 16, 1942 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. WILLIAM DUNCAN LIVINGSTONE HARDIE WAS BORN NEAR EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND IN 1862, AND THE FAMILY IMMIGRATED TO OHIO THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IN 1885 HARDIE MARRIED MARGARET KIRTLEY, AND THEY HAD FIVE CHILDREN: IANTHE, AGNES, E.W., JESSE, AND INZOLA. HARDIE FIRST CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1889, WHEN HE BECAME THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GALT NO. 1 MINE. AFTER FOUR YEARS HE RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES, WORKING FOR MINING COMPANIES IN PENNSYLVANIA, TENNESSEE, AND ALABAMA BEFORE RETURNING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1896 AS SUPERINTENDENT OF NORTHWEST COAL & NAVIGATION COMPANY. IN 1910 HARDIE LEFT THE GALT-OWNED COMPANY AND WORKED AS THE MANAGER OF THE DIAMOND COAL COMPANY UNTIL 1912, WHEN HE RAN FOR AND WON THE OFFICE OF LETHBRIDGE MAYOR. HARDIE SERVED AS MAYOR UNTIL 1928, WHEN HE WAS REPLACED BY ROBERT BARROWMAN. IN 1930 HARDIE HAD AN UNSUCCESSFUL RUN FOR THE LETHBRIDG SEAT IN THE PROVINCIAL GENERAL ELECTION. HARDIE WAS ACTIVE WITH THE LETHBRIDGE MASONS, THE ALBERTA UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES, AND HAD AN AVID INTEREST IN ASTROLOGY. HARDIEVILLE, THE FORMER HAMLET NORTHEAST OF LETHBRIDGE THAT WAS ANNEXED BY THE CITY IN 1978, WAS NAMED AFTER HIM. W. D. L. HARDIE DIED ON JUNE 16, 1942. THE FOLLOWING HISTORY OF THE ROY CLINIC WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM GALT ARCHIVES, DR. LOUIS ARTHUR ROY'S LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARY, AND THE BOOK 'MEDICAL CLINICS AND PHYSICIANS OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA' BY GERALD M. MCDOUGALL AND FIONA C. HARRIS (1991). DR. LOUIS A. ROY WAS BORN IN MOOSOMIN, SASKATCHEWAN IN 1888. AFTER RECEIVING HIS EARLY EDUCATION THERE, HE PURSUED MEDICINE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, WHERE HE EARNED A BACHELOR OF MEDICINE IN 1911. AFTER COMPLETING AN INTERNSHIP AT THE ROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL IN MONTREAL, FOCUSING ON SURGERY AND PATHOLOGY, DR. ROY MOVED TO ALBERTA IN 1913. HE PRACTICED WITH DOCTORS DEVEBER AND CAMPBELL IN LETHBRIDGE FOR FIVE YEARS BEFORE JOINING THE ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY MEDICAL CORPS. HE WAS STATIONED IN A BRITISH MILITARY HOSPITAL IN KENT AS A PATHOLOGIST AND EARNED THE RANK OF CAPTAIN. UPON WAR'S END DR. ROY RETURNED TO LETHBRIDGE AND WORKED WITH THE CAMPBELL GROUP UNTIL 1936, WHEN HE PARTNERED WITH DR. VALERIAN SWANCESKY (AND LATER, WITH DR. STEPHEN SCHMALTZ) TO CREATE THE ROY CLINIC GROUP. THE CLINIC WAS HOUSED ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE SHERLOCK BLOCK. DR. ROY WAS ACCREDITED AS A SURGEON BY THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF CANADA IN 1945, AND HE PRACTICED AT THE CLINIC UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1961. DR. ROY'S SON, DR. DOUGLAS GAETEN ROY ALSO JOINED THE PRACTICE IN 1945. DR. LOUIS A. ROY DIED IN 1964, BUT THE PRACTICE CONTINUED WITH ADDITIONS INCLUDING DR. DONALD ARTHUR RICE AND DR. JAMES ALFRED MCNALLY. THEY WERE LIVING IN MEDICINE HAT WHERE BENNETT WORKED AS A CARPENTER WHEN HE ENLISTED WITH THE 175TH BATTALION CEF ON JANUARY 26, 1916. BENNETT SURVIVED THE WAR AND HE AND ALICE HAD SIX CHILDREN. THE FAMILY LIVED IN SHAUNESSEY AND LETHBRIDGE AND BENNETT WORKED AS A STREETCAR DRIVER, CARPENTER AND HOTEL OPERATOR. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE KIWANIS CLUB AND LETHBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY. AT THIS TIME THE NUMBER OF NEW JAPANESE IMMIGRANTS WAS RESTRICTED. IN OSAKA, SHE LEARNED TO CARE FOR SILKWORM COCOONS, SPIN YARN, AND TO WEAVE VERY FINE SILK. AFTER THREE YEARS, MRS. KANASHRIO MADE THE DIFFICULT THREE WEEK JOURNEY TO CANADA BY BOAT, ARRIVING AT HER NEW HOME IN HARDIEVILLE, ALBERTA. SHE CAME TO SETTLE IN THE SMALL COMMUNITY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 OKINAWA FAMILIES. SHE QUICKLY LEARNED TO MANAGE HER DOMESTIC LIFE AND FOUND HER MAIN SUPPORT FROM THE WOMEN IN THE COMMUNITY AND HER EXTENDED FAMILY, IN PARTICULAR HER SISTER- IN-LAW, USHI KANASHIRO WHO TAUGHT HER HOW TO MAKE BREAD. OVER TIME, SHE PERFECTED THE ART OF BREAD MAKING, BAKING FIVE TO EIGHT LARGE LOAVES AT A TIME TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF HER GROWING FAMILY. SHE MADE THE BREAD FROM YEAST, WHEAT FLOUR AND USED LIQUID FROM BOILED POTATOES. SHE USED THE LARGE ENAMEL BOWL WITH THE LID TO MIX THE DOUGH AND ALLOW IT TO RISE. WHEN THERE DOUGH ROSE SEVERAL INCHES ABOVE THE RIM OF THE BOWL, IT WOULD BE PUNCHED DOWN AND LEFT TO RISE ONCE MORE. THE DOUGH WAS SHAPED INTO LOAVES AND PLACED THREE TO A PAN AND TWO FOR THE SMALLER BREAD PAN THEN BAKED IN THE OVEN OF HER COAL BURNING STOVE. FOR VARIETY, SHE WOULD MAKE CINNAMON BUNS OR DINNER BUNS FROM THE SAME BREAD DOUGH. OCCASIONALLY SHE USED THE BREAD DOUGH AND CUT OUT DONUT RINGS, DEEP FRY IT THEN COAT IT WITH SUGAR. SHE ALSO MADE KARINTO WITH THE BREAD DOUGH (SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO MAKE KARINTO). MRS. KANASHIRO BAKED BREAD USING THIS EQUIPMENT UNTIL THE 1960S WHEN HER CHILDREN LEFT HOME ONE BY ONE. ROUND, PLASTER ROSETTE. HAS A RAISED CENTER, WITH 'PETALS' THAT CURVE INWARD. AROUND CENTRE ARE SIXTEEN PETALS, WITH SMALLER PETALS IN BETWEEN THESE. THE ROSETTE IS PAINTED WITH BROWN LACQUER; ENDS OF PETALS ARE COVERED WITH GOLD LEAF. ROSETTE HAS THREE EXTENSIONS, WITH GOLD DECORATIVE DESIGNS ON THEM. THERE IS A HINT OF PURPLE BEYOND TWO OF THESE EXTENSIONS. EDGES OF PLASTER ARE VERY ROUGH. STRAW STICKS OUT FROM EDGES OF PLASTER. ROSETTE HAS SOME MAJOR CHIPS AND CRACKS IN IT. ROSETTE IS STAMPED ON BOTTOM WITH "[?]-159". IS IN VERY DELICATE CONDITION; VERY BRITTLE.

THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF MAYOR SHACKLEFORD WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM ARCHIVES CANADA ONLINE AND A LETHBRIDGE HERALD TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM MAY 31, 1992. A.W. SHACKLEFORD WAS BORN IN ESSEX, ENGLAND IN 1899 AND CAME TO CALGARY WITH HIS PARENTS IN 1909. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL HE TRAINED AS A DRAFTSMAN BUT WAS EMPLOYED BY THE FILM EXCHANGE AND FOX FILMS. IN 1921 HE WAS HIRED TO MANAGED THE KING'S THEATRE IN LETHBRIDGE AND BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH MARK ROGERS, A LETHBRIDGE BUSINESSMAN WHO OWNED THREE LOCAL MOVIE THEATRES. SHACKLEFORD ALSO BECAME PARTNER IN THE AMUSEMENT COMPANY THAT OPENED THE HENDERSON LAKE PAVILLION IN 1924. BY 1925 HE WAS PART-OWNER OF THE FORMER EMPRESS THEATRE ON 5TH AVENUE SOUTH, RENAMING IT THE ROXY. HE THEN TEAMED UP WITH THE FAMOUS PLAYERS COMPANY TO REMODEL THE FORMER PALACE THEATRE AND RENAME IT THE CAPITOL. SHACKLEFORD ALSO OPENED THE THEATRE IN THE FORMER COLLEGE MALL, BUILT THE 960-SEAT PARAMOUNT THEATRE ON 4TH AVENUE SOUTH, AND TOOK OVER OPERATION OF THE DIRVE-IN THEATRE AT THE SOUTH CITY LIMITS. SHACKLEFORD WAS HEAVILY INVOLVED IN CIVIC LIFE, ACTIVE IN GROUPS INCLUDING THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY, THE GYRO CLUB, UNITED WAY, LETHBRIDGE & DISTRICT EXHIBITION BOARD, BOARD OF TRADE, ST. AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH, AND THE ALBERTA THEATRE OPERATORS ASSOCIATION. HE AND HIS WIFE ADA HAD TWO SONS, ROBERT AND DOUGLAS. AFTER SEVERAL TERMS AS ALDERMAN STARTING IN 1939, SHACKLEFORD FIRST SERVED AS MAYOR FROM 1944 - 1947, AND FOR TWO MORE TERMS FROM 1952 - 1955 AND 1957 - 1961. ON MAY 14, 2014 COLLECTIONS TECH KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, GARRY KOHN, ABOUT HIS ROLE IN LETHBRIDGE’S JEWISH COMMUNITY SINCE 1968 AND THE DONATION OF TWO RELATED ARTIFACTS, A STAR OF DAVID THAT WAS INSTALLED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE BUILDING (P20130024002-GA) AND A HANDMADE REPRODUCTION OF THE TABLETS OF THE COVENANT (P20130024001-GA). REGARDING THIS ARTIFACT, KOHN SAID “[IT] WAS DECIDED WHEN THEY TOOK OVER THE BUILDING, THAT IF IT WAS GOING TO BE FERRARI WESTWOOD ARCHITECTS, THE STAR OF DAVID WASN’T AN APPROPRIATE THING TO HAVE ON THE MAIN COLUMN OR TOWER OF THE BUILDING… AT FIRST WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. WE WERE THERE, THEY HAD A CRANE UP AND TO HAVE TO CUT IT OFF BECAUSE IT WAS STEEL BARS RIGHT INTO THE BRICK OF THE BUILDING. THEY TOOK IT DOWN AND PUT IT IN THE YARD AND ONE OF THE OTHER – THAT NIGHT, IT DIDN’T GET PUT INSIDE THE BUILDING – ONE OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CAME BY AND SAW IT LAYING IN THE FRONT YARD BECAUSE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO GO BACK INSIDE OF THE BUILDING AND HE SAW IT THERE AND THOUGHT, “THAT’S NOT RIGHT”, AND SO HE TOOK IT HOME. AND THEN WE CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY, LOOKING FOR IT AND IT WAS GONE AND SO MINOR PANIC THEN. BUT THEN HE CAME AND SAID “NO, I’VE GOT IT”, AND HE BROUGHT IT BACK TO ME AND I BROUGHT IT DOWN HERE BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT IT LOST. THE STAR OF DAVID IS NOT A JUDAIC RITUAL SYMBOL IN ACTUAL FACT, BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE THAT TYPE OF THING. IT’S NOT THE SAME AS THE CRUCIFIX IS TO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, BUT IT IS A SYMBOL OF JUDAISM. MORE TO THE POINT, IT BECAME THAT SYMBOL MORE SO EVEN IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN HITLER MADE ALL THE JEWS WEAR THE STAR FOR IDENTIFICATION. THAT’S WHERE IT’S IMPORTANT… THE FIRST THING WE THOUGHT OF WAS THE GALT MUSEUM… IT WOULD HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE. WHAT’S THE POINT OF KEEPING IT IF IT’S GOING TO BE HIDDEN IN THE BASEMENT SOMEWHERE?” REGARDING LETHBRIDGE'S JEWISH COMMUNITY KOHN SAID, “I AM CURRENTLY THE PRESIDENT OF THE LETHBRIDGE HEBREW CONGREGATION, AND PROBABLY THE RELIGIOUS CHAIRMAN, THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE A RABBI AND I’M WELL ENOUGH VERSED TO CONDUCT SERVICES AND LEAD THE COMMUNITY ALONG WITH THE HELP OF ONE OTHER PERSON, MR. JOEL BERMACK… I’M NOT A RABBI BUT RABBI MEANS TEACHER AND LEADER OF THE SERVICES, THE RELIGIOUS SERVICES, AND THAT’S BASICALLY WHAT I DO. BEING PRESIDENT AND LEADER OF A SMALL CONGREGATION THAT NUMBERS MAYBE TEN FAMILIES NOW, AT THE MOST… IT’S AN AGING COMMUNITY; WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING OR PASSING AWAY. I CONDUCT THE FUNERAL SERVICES, MAYBE ONE OR TWO A YEAR. IN THE LAST TEN YEARS, I WOULD SAY, I’VE CONDUCTED FIFTEEN BURIALS. IT’S A DWINDLING COMMUNITY… WE DON’T HAVE MUCH LEFT OF A COMMUNITY IF YOU COMPARED IT TO THE CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS AND THE PEOPLE WHO WERE HERE IN 1956 WHEN THE SYNAGOGUE WAS DEDICATED AND AFTER IT WAS BUILT. IT’S THE VERY SHADOW OF ITSELF, OF A VERY VIBRANT COMMUNITY THAT WAS IN LETHBRIDGE, WITH PEOPLE FROM VARIOUS WALKS OF LIFE, A LOT OF THEM BUSINESS PEOPLE, AND MAJOR PLAYERS IN THE DOWNTOWN LETHBRIDGE CORE… IT WAS SUCH A TIGHT COMMUNITY AND SO WELL KNOWN THAT NOBODY DATED EACH OTHER; THEY JUST DID EVERYTHING TOGETHER IN THE YOUTH GROUPS AND THAT TYPE OF THING. AND FOR AS MANY PEOPLE AS THERE WERE, AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND THAT, THEY HEADED OUT AND FOUND PARTNERS ELSEWHERE… WHEN WE HAVE TO HAVE A RELIGIOUS SERVICE IN THE JEWISH FAITH, YOU HAVE TO HAVE TEN PEOPLE THERE, TEN MEN THEY SAY. THE CONSERVATIVE AND ORTHODOX BEND THAT TO INCLUDE WOMEN. IF YOU WANT TO SAY THE MEMORIAL PRAYER FOR THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF A PARENT, CALLED THE KADDISH, YOU HAVE TO HAVE TEN PEOPLE. IT’S REALLY TOUGH TO GET TEN PEOPLE ON ANY GIVEN DAY TO COME. ON THE HOLIEST DAY OF THE YEAR, YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, LAST YEAR WE HAD FIFTEEN PEOPLE. AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE THEM; YOU HAVE TO KEEP THAT QUORUM FOR THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE SERVICE, WHICH IS A MORNING SERVICE FROM NINE TILL TWELVE THIRTY OR TO ONE O’CLOCK. AND A LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING SERVICE WHICH IS ANOTHER THREE HOURS. IT’S TOUGH TO KEEP PEOPLE WHO AREN’T OVERLY OBSERVANT IN THEIR FAITH, TO TIE THEM DOWN FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME. AND YET IT’S THE OLD STORY, WHEN YOUR BACK’S AGAINST THE WALL, IF SOMEBODY EVER SAID ANYTHING OR MADE DEROGATORY COMMENTS, THEY WOULD COME, THEY WOULD BE AT THE FOREFRONT FOR DEFENSE. SO I AM INTENSELY PROUD OF MY HERITAGE. I THINK YOU’VE PROVED THAT ONE OUT, BUT WE DON’T GO OUT AND PREACH IT. IT’S NOT ALLOWED IN OUR FAITH… WHEN I CAME IN ’68, EVEN SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE HERE IN ’56 HAD PASSED ON, AND SO I DIDN’T KNOW SOME OF THEM BUT IT WAS A PRETTY VIBRANT COMMUNITY. WHEN WE HELD OUR SERVICES WE HAD A RABBI IN THOSE DAYS AND SERVICES WERE HELD FOR FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY MORNING SERVICES. WE HAD SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR THE CHILDREN IN THOSE DAYS, AND THAT WAS BEFORE WE’D HAD OUR CHILDREN. BY THE TIME WE HAD OUR CHILD IN 1974, THERE WAS NO LONGER A RABBI HERE, RABBI KALMAR BEING THE LAST ONE, WHO MOVED ON TO CALGARY. HE WAS SOMEWHAT OF A CHALLENGE FOR THE COMMUNITY HIMSELF, AND DIDN’T QUITE FIT THE BILL HERE, AND SO AT THAT POINT THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH OF A COMMUNITY TO ATTRACT A FULLTIME RABBI… SO FOR THE HOLY DAYS, THE HIGH HOLY DAYS, WE WOULD IMPORT A TEACHER OR AN EDUCATED PERSON OR SOMEBODY WHO COULD LEAD THE SERVICES, THAT WAS FULLY FAMILIAR, FROM CALGARY OR VANCOUVER TO WOULD COME IN FOR ROSH HASHANAH, THE NEW YEAR, OR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, TEN DAYS LATER, AND LEAD THE SERVICES FOR THE CONGREGATION THERE. FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, WE HAD ENOUGH PEOPLE WERE STILL CONVERSANT WITH THE RITUALS, THE PRACTICES, THE HEBREW, THE LITURGY, WHO COULD LEAD THE SERVICES BETTER THAN I CAN – SOME OF THE OLDER PEOPLE. SO WE JUST DID OUR OWN THING, AND WE DID IT… THIS NUMBER OF FAMILIES, CONSIDERING WHAT HAD BEEN DONE, FOR THE NUMBER OF FAMILIES WE HAD, WAS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE IN TERMS OF COMMITMENT TO THE LETHBRIDGE COMMUNITY AND INTEGRATION INTO IT. THE LETHBRIDGE JEWISH COMMUNITY DID NOT SECULARIZE ITSELF OR INSULATE ITSELF. WE TRIED TO BE ACTIVE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE SOCIAL LIFE, THE FABRIC OF THE COMMUNITY… I WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL BOARD MEMBERS OF THE SOUTHERN ALBERTA ART GALLERY. I AND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WERE MEMBERS OF THE KIWANIS CLUB. I CHAIRED THE MUSIC FESTIVAL FOR FIVE YEARS… THE OTHERS, MORE SO JUST IN BUSINESS AND BEING GOOD CORPORATE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY, I WOULD SAY THAT… WE RAISE MONEY, AND AT FIRST HALF THE MONEY WAS KEPT TO SUPPORT AND SUBSIDIZE THE SYNAGOGUE BECAUSE OUR DUES COULDN’T DO THAT, AND THE OTHER HALF WAS GIVEN AWAY INTO THE LETHBRIDGE COMMUNITY. SO FOR YEARS… WE HAVE SUPPORTED, WE HAVE DONE THINGS LIKE UH, FURNISHED ROOMS AT ST. MICHAEL’S; AT THE REGIONAL HOSPITAL OVER THE YEARS. WE HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR OUR COMMUNITY AT ALL THE HIGH SCHOOLS INCLUDING THE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS. WE HAVE SUPPORTED A NUMBER OF OTHER ORGANIZATIONS IN TOWN – THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB, THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, TO THE TUNE OF WELL IN EXCESS OF $5000 TO $7000 A YEAR. NOW THAT WE DON’T HAVE A SYNAGOGUE, ALL OF IT IS GOING TO IT, FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS WE’VE GIVEN $5000 AND $6000 STRAIGHT OUT TO THE KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL FOUNDATION… THE MONEY THAT WE RAISE GOES TO THAT, SO THAT’S PART OF THE CORPORATE CITIZENRY THAT WE TRY TO MAINTAIN. WE’VE MADE OUR LIVINGS HERE; THIS IS HOW WE CAN GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY… [A FEW YEARS AGO] WE REALIZED HOW THE COMMUNITY WAS GETTING SMALLER AND SMALLER. THE COST OF KEEPING UP A BUILDING, ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO TAXES TO PAY BECAUSE CHURCHES ARE EXEMPT FROM PROPERTY TAXES, THE MAINTENANCE ON A BUILDING AND HEATING IT IN WINTER TIME, WHETHER IT WAS USED OR NOT - OF 6700 SQUARE FEET - IT WAS PRETTY OLD, AND AS THE POPULATION WAS DWINDLING, HOW MUCH CAN YOU ASK PEOPLE TO GIVE TO SUPPORT SOMETHING THAT ONLY GETS USED A HALF DOZEN DAYS OF THE YEAR?... SO WE HAD A MEETING AND DECIDED THAT WE SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AND SEE WHAT WE COULD DO, IF WE COULD SELL THE BUILDING. THE IDEA WAS TO TRY AND GET A PLAN, A SUCCESSION PLAN, THAT, IF WE DID SELL IT, THEN WHAT WOULD WE DO? WE STILL WANTED A PLACE TO GATHER. WE DIDN’T WANT TO RENT A ROOM RANDOMLY IN A MALL OR A STRUCTURE OF SOME SORT, AND IT WAS ONLY THROUGH – WE PUT A SIGN IN THE WINDOW THAT IT WAS FOR SALE AND WE HAD ONE OR TWO PEOPLE CALL AND SAY THAT THEY MIGHT BE INTERESTED, BUT NOTHING THAT REALLY CAME TO FRUITION. IT WAS GOING TO BE AN EXPENSIVE PROPOSITION FOR EVERYBODY, BECAUSE WE HAD THE BUILDING APPRAISED, AND IT WAS WORTH A FAIR CHUNK OF COIN. BUT IT WAS GOING TO NEED SOME UPGRADING AND THAT TYPE OF THING. WELL, IN A CASUAL CONVERSATION OVER LUNCH AND CHATTING WITH ART FERRARI AND DAN WESTWOOD, MORE ART FERRARI, WHO WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF LES CALMAN AND MYSELF AND DAN SHAPIRO, HE SAID, “YOU KNOW, YOUR PREDECESSORS DESIGNED THIS BUILDING. YOU’RE IN A PRETTY SMALL SPACE ON 13TH STREET NORTH AND YOU’RE GROWING AND YOU’RE VERY BUSY, WHY DON’T YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THIS?” AND WE HAD A COUPLE OF LUNCHEONS AND IT JUST FELL, IT CAME TOGETHER. AND ART HAD WORKED FOR A JEWISH FAMILY WHEN HE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE’D WORKED FOR THE SCHECTORS AT HERB’S WESTERN WEAR AND HE HAD A LOVE FOR SOME OF THE PEOPLE HERE AND A RESPECT FOR THEM; LET’S PUT IT THAT WAY. DOOR SET IS ONE OF TWO ENTRANCE DOOR SETS TO PARAMOUNT THEATRE CINEMA ONE. DOOR SET WAS REMOVED FROM THEATRE AFTER ITS CLOSURE IN 2007. ACCORDING TO JOEY SHACKLEFORD (GRANDSON OF A.W. SHACKLEFORD) IN 2010, THE PANE OF GLASS ON THE DOOR ALLOWED MANAGEMENT TO SEE WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE COMING ON. THIS FACILITATED THE PROCESS OF SWITCHING FROM THE EARLY VIEWING TO THE LATE VIEWING. KANASHIRO WAS BORN ON A SUGAR CANE FARM IN THE SEMI-TROPICAL ISLAND OF OKINAWA AND MARRIED BOKUJIN KANASHIRO IN YOMITAN, OKINAWA, JAPAN IN 1930. AFTER THEY MARRIED, MR. KANASHIRO, RETURNED TO HIS HOME IN HARDIEVILLE, ALBERTA. MRS. KANASHIRO WENT TO OSAKA TO WORK IN A SILK FACTORY AND WAITED HER TURN TO BE ALLOWED INTO CANADA. AT THIS TIME THE NUMBER OF NEW JAPANESE IMMIGRANTS WAS RESTRICTED. IN OSAKA, SHE LEARNED TO CARE FOR SILKWORM COCOONS, SPIN YARN, AND TO WEAVE VERY FINE SILK. AFTER THREE YEARS, MRS. KANASHRIO MADE THE DIFFICULT THREE WEEK JOURNEY TO CANADA BY BOAT, ARRIVING AT HER NEW HOME IN HARDIEVILLE, ALBERTA. SHE CAME TO SETTLE IN THE SMALL COMMUNITY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 OKINAWA FAMILIES. SHE QUICKLY LEARNED TO MANAGE HER DOMESTIC LIFE AND FOUND HER MAIN SUPPORT FROM THE WOMEN IN THE COMMUNITY AND HER EXTENDED FAMILY, IN PARTICULAR HER SISTER- IN-LAW, USHI KANASHIRO WHO TAUGHT HER HOW TO MAKE BREAD. OVER TIME, SHE PERFECTED THE ART OF BREAD MAKING, BAKING FIVE TO EIGHT LARGE LOAVES AT A TIME TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF HER GROWING FAMILY. SHE MADE THE BREAD FROM YEAST, WHEAT FLOUR AND USED LIQUID FROM BOILED POTATOES. SHE USED THE LARGE ENAMEL BOWL WITH THE LID TO MIX THE DOUGH AND ALLOW IT TO RISE. WHEN THERE DOUGH ROSE SEVERAL INCHES ABOVE THE RIM OF THE BOWL, IT WOULD BE PUNCHED DOWN AND LEFT TO RISE ONCE MORE. THE DOUGH WAS SHAPED INTO LOAVES AND PLACED THREE TO A PAN AND TWO FOR THE SMALLER BREAD PAN THEN BAKED IN THE OVEN OF HER COAL BURNING STOVE. FOR VARIETY, SHE WOULD MAKE CINNAMON BUNS OR DINNER BUNS FROM THE SAME BREAD DOUGH. OCCASIONALLY SHE USED THE BREAD DOUGH AND CUT OUT DONUT RINGS, DEEP FRY IT THEN COAT IT WITH SUGAR. WHEN HE WAS BORN INTO A POOR FAMILY OF ELEVEN IN 1944, IN VANCOUVER. "ME AND MY TWIN SISTER WERE SOLD BECAUSE THERE WERE JUST TOO MANY. SO DAD, MY MOM PICKED ME AND DAD SAID YES THAT'S GOOD... OWNS AND OPERATES THE NEW MOON CAFE AND TWO GROCERIES, WHICH ARE RUN BY THE FAMILY AND NEW CHINESE IMMIGRANTS THAT HAROLD SR. SPONSORED. "AT APPROXIMATELY FIVE YEARS OLD [MY FATHER] INTRODUCED ME TO THE NEW MOON CAFE, AND I WAS A BUSBOY AT THE AGE OF FIVE... IN 1951 HE SHOWED ME MY FIRST HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL... BECAUSE HE WAS THE OWNER... HE'D WAKE UP AT FIVE IN THE MORNING TO GO TO THE CAFE, OFF AND ON TO THE GROCERY STORE AND MIGHT BE DONE AT EIGHT AT NIGHT, SUPPER AND IMMEDIATELY TO CHINATOWN [FOR] GAMBLING, PUTTING DOWN MAH JONG." HAROLD JR. ATTENDED WESTMINISTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DURING THE DAY, AND CHINESE SCHOOL AT THE CHINESE NATIONAL LEAGUE IN THE EVENINGS - HIS FATHER WAS THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE, AND THE ORGANIZATION RAN THE SCHOOL, CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS, FILM SCREENINGS, AND BANQUETS, FUNDED BY MEMBERSHIP FEES. HAROLD'S YOUNGER BROTHER, CALVIN, "GOT SENT TO A BOARDING SCHOOL SOMEWHERE. HE WAS GIFTED, BUT HE HAD A BYPASS SURGERY, HE HAD SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIS HEART. HE COULDN'T HANDLE PUBLIC SCHOOL, SO THEY SENT HIM TO B.C." AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND A BRIEF STINT IN CALGARY, HAROLD JR. RAN ING'S GROCERY FOR HIS FATHER, AND IN THE LATE 1960S AND EARLY 70S ALSO WORKED AS A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD AND A SALESMAN AT SEARS. BOTH HAROLD SR. AND MYRA ING PASSED AWAY IN THE 1990S, AND THE OBJECTS ENCOMPASSING DONATION P19950073001-231 WERE COLLECTED FROM THE FAMILY HOME. REF: MONTGOMERY WARD CATALOG 1894. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MILITARY OBJECTS, INCLUDING THOSE DONATED BY M.J. BENNETT. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS FOUND IN BENNETT'S ATTESTATION PAPERS AND RECORDS FROM THE GLENBOW ARCHIVES. MICHAEL JOHN BENNETT WAS BORN IN 1881 IN WHITNEY, ENGLAND AND SERVED IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO CANADA IN 1910 WITH HIS WIFE, ALICE MAY BENNETT (NEE EDWARDS). THEY WERE LIVING IN MEDICINE HAT WHERE BENNETT WORKED AS A CARPENTER WHEN HE ENLISTED WITH THE 175TH BATTALION CEF ON JANUARY 26, 1916. BENNETT SURVIVED THE WAR AND HE AND ALICE HAD SIX CHILDREN. THE FAMILY LIVED IN SHAUNESSEY AND LETHBRIDGE AND BENNETT WORKED AS A STREETCAR DRIVER, CARPENTER AND HOTEL OPERATOR. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE KIWANIS CLUB AND LETHBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY. BENNETT DIED IN 1982. M.J. BENNETT'S GRANDSON, TREVOR BENNETT, PROVIDED SOME FURTHER FAMILY HISTORY IN 2002 (SEE P20020071009). ON 11 DECEMBER 2017, PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN INTERVIEW WITH BENNETT’S ELDEST GRANDDAUGHTER, ALICE MAY DUHAMEL. THROUGH THIS INTERVIEW FURTHER INFORMATION WAS RECORDED ABOUT THE DONOR AND THE USERS OF A NUMBER OF ARTIFACTS DONATED BY MICHAEL JOHN BENNETT. ABOUT THE DONOR, DUHAMEL SAID, “WE CALLED HIM ‘POP’. THAT’S BECAUSE [ONE OF THE GRANDCHILDREN], MICHAEL, COULDN’T SAY ‘GRANDPA’, [SO] HE SAID ‘POP’. HE’S ‘POP’ TO EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY. UP UNTIL HE WAS ONE HUNDRED AND ONE OR SO.” SHE CONTINUED, “POP WAS IN ENGLAND [WHEN] HE MARRIED HIS WIFE - [AND MY] GRANDMOTHER - ALICE MAY EDWARDS BENNETT. [SHE] CAME TO CANADA IN 1911 IN SEPTEMBER ON THE SHIP AND LANDED IN CANADA. GRANDMA BROUGHT UNCLE JACK, WHO WAS THE OLDEST, AND MY MOTHER… [MICHAEL AND ALICE] HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: JACK, EDNA MAY, FRANK JAMES, HARRY HUGH, ART – I DON’T KNOW, DORIS ALICE, AGNES MARY, AND SYDNEY EDWARD. MY MOTHER WAS EDNA.” IN THAT INTERVIEW, DUHAMEL REFLECTED ON HER MEMORY OF THIS CLEAVER. SHE EXPLAINED HER GRANDMOTHER WAS THE PRIMARY USER OF THE CLEAVER, BUT “IT WASN’T USED THAT OFTEN.” SHE ADDED THAT USERS ALSO INCLUDED, “MOTHER OR AUNT DORIS OR AUNT AGNES OR WHOEVER HAPPENED TO BE AROUND TO SLICE UP THE CHICKENS… MY MOTHER WAS AMAZING,” SHE CONTINUED, “MOTHER RAISED CHICKENS. SO [WHEN] WE HAD COMPANY COMING AND SHE DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO EAT, SHE’D GO DOWN TO THE CHICKEN COOP, HAVE ME SNARE A CHICKEN, BRING IT UP. SHE’D GRAB IT AND CHOP OFF ITS HEAD, AND [THEN] WE’D PLUCK IT. [SHE WOULD] HAVE IT COOKED BY SUPPERTIME.” ON 13 FEBRUARY 2018, PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN ADDITIONAL INTERVIEW WITH ANOTHER GRANDCHILD OF MICHAEL AND ALICE BENNETT, MIKE BENNETT, ALONG WITH HIS WIFE, DIANE. BENNETT REMEMBERED, “BESIDES SEEING [THE CLEAVER] IN THE GROCERY STORE PART, MY GRANDMOTHER WOULD USE IT FOR CUTTING A BIG ROUND CHEESE THAT THEY USED TO HAVE… CHEESE AT THAT TIME CAME IN 25 LB. ROUNDS AND THEY WOULD JUST CHOP A PORTION OFF AND WEIGH IT… [IT WAS] FOR SALE IN THE STORE PART. IT WAS SORT OF A GENERAL STORE. [GRANDMOTHER] HAD EVERYTHING FROM DRY GOODS AND A LITTLE BIT OF MEATS AND PRODUCE.” IN A WRITTEN RESPONSE TO A QUESTION THE MUSEUM INITALLY POSED TO THE FAMILY ABOUT THE ARTIFACT'S DATES OF USE, MICHAEL BENNETT WROTE: "SEEN 1944-46."
