History / Biographical
Annora Brown was born outside of Red Deer in 1899 and died at the age of 88 in Deep Cove, British Columbia in 1987 where she retired. Brown is one of the Alberta’s foremost early artists. Based for much of her life in historic Fort Macleod, Brown played a major role in creating a ‘picture’ of Southern Alberta: its wild landscape, First Nations, pioneer rural communities, local history- above all its wondrous nature symbolized by the wildflower. Her work was able to capture the culture of the First nation communities that she lived near.
Her father was Edmund Foster Brown and mother was Elizabeth Ethel (Cody) Brown. Her mother supported and encouraged Brown’s love for art and from 1925-1929 Brown attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. She returned in 1929 and developed and art program for Calgary’s Mounted Royal College but later had to leave due to her mother’s illness. A student of the celebrated landscape painters, known as the Group of Seven (1920-1933), Brown’s artistic practice spans the 1930s to mid-1980s. During that time, she cobbled together a living as an artist, often by teaching, illustrating books and magazines, and selling, whenever she could, her captivating paintings in watercolor, tempera oil and later serigraph prints. In 1945-1950, brown worked as a respected artist and teacher at the Banff School of Fine Arts. She was also commissioned to paint over 200 western wild flowers for the Glenbow Foundation. Brown’s work was also included in Crescent Heights High School in Calgary, University of Alberta in Edmonton, United College in Winnipeg, and the Canadian Handicrafts Guild in Montreal. She was also awarded a prize in the Alberta Government’s 1955 Jubilee Contest for Alberta painters.
In 1965 Brown retired to Deep Cove British Columbia to paint and garden. She had given a “voice” to a region that had been rarely presented in Canadian art. Her attention to the unique aspects of Old Man’s Country like Niitsitapi, the character and isolation of its small rural communities as well as its unforgettable environment was expressed mainly through her focus on wildflowers and native plants.
Buoyed by the conviction that a woman’s activities “need not be limited to polishing furniture and raising babies”, Brown was also a writer and author of two books: the Western Canadian classic Old Man’s Garden and her autobiographical Sketches from Life. She was the first woman to receive an honorary degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1971 for her contribution to “western art and living.” (written by Mary-Beth Laviolette; Summer 2016 Gallery Exhibit at Galt Museum)

Art Batty Construction Ltd. was a construction company in Lethbridge that operated in the 1940s-1960s. The company was primarily involved with residential homes building and design plans in the 1950s. In the mid-1950s, the company also designed and constructed non-residential buildings, like the MacLeod’s Ltd. Lethbridge offices in 1954, and the Glendale Bowl Co. building in 1960.
The company collaborated with other local firms, Haddin, Davis & Brown Ltd. and Meech, Mitchell, Robins & Associates to build the Glendale Bowl Company Building in 1960-61, which appears to be the company's last major project. The firm also worked on the Glendale Shopping District, constructed in 1955-56, which included the company’s offices in the area.
Art Batty hired A.R. Koshney in 1947, who worked his way up from a carpenter to a company shareholder and Vice-President in 1954 with Art Batty Construction Ltd. A.R. Koshney, worked as the V.P. and Construction Supervisor over all the residential buildings from 1954 onward, then started his own residential construction firm in 1961. The name of Koshney’s firm has changed multiple times over the last several decades; however, most recently the firm is Koshney & Roy Homes, taken over by Koshney’s son.
Custodial History
The Koshney's business inherited the records of the Art Batty Construction Ltd.

History / Biographical
Edward Fredric "Teddy" Hagell was born June 20, 1895 in Coaldale, Alberta. His father, Edward Hagell, arrived in Lethbridge from England in about 1800 with his wife, who died with the birth of her first child, Cora. Edward Hagell started the first newspaper in southern Alberta. Edward and Ellen (2nd wife) had four children: violet, Freda, Albert, and Edward (teddy).
Teddy began drawing at the age of 2 1/2 years, winning numerous competitions without having any formal training. He was a self-taught artist, though he did take some lessons in etching while in Vancouver. E.F. Hagell gained fame as a Canadian range rider and artist, depicting the early cattle country in much of his work. His father and two uncles homesteaded and established the 'Three Links' cattle ranch west of Cardston, in the Mountain View district. Hagell's own experience of ranching complemented his love of the outdoors, from which he developed his own unique style in the tradition of artists such as Rosa Bonheur, Charles Russell, and Fredrick Remington.
Hagell married Cora Marie Pelletier in 1919 and the couple left for Los Angeles that year. They had three children born in 1920, 1922, and 1923, before moving to Vancouver in 1929. Hagell had the first one-man exhibition at the Vancouver art gallery when it opened in 1932. That year the family returned to Coaldale, where they stayed until moving to Calgary in 1935, and back to Lethbridge two years later. In the mid 1940s the Hagells moved to Brampton, Ontario, where they remained until settling in pincher creek in 1952. E.F. Hagell returned to Lethbridge just prior to his death in 1964, at the age of 69.
The work of E.F. Hagell is unique in that it was confined exclusively to prairie and mountain scenes of western Canada. Many of his works reproduced incidents he saw and experienced and most pieces were done in pen and ink. Every one of his drawings or paintings contained at least one animal; he had little interest in depicting people. Hagell wished, through his work, to preserve the history of the early days of the west before mechanization was introduced. Hagell received international recognition through a series of prints and etchings circulated through the Canadian national parks. Collections of his work were shown in or recognized by the Beaver Club in London, the Royal Canadian Academy, the London Illustrated News, Vista Del Arroya--Passadena, painters and etchers of Ontario, and the Glenbow foundation in Calgary (in 2006 Glenbow transferred a major part of their Hagel related artifacts to the Galt Museum & Archives. The Galt now holds the most significant collection of Hagel works.) His first major exhibition was in California, with subsequent shows in Oklahoma; Texas; the sportsman's show in Toronto; the Calgary Stampede; the 1951 Lethbridge Exhibition and Rodeo; the Calgary Petroleum Club; and an exhibit staged posthumously by his wife in 1970, at the Provincial Museum in Victoria, B.C.. During his career as an artist, hagell painted and drew about 1500 works. He also began writing in 1930, later publishing a collection of poems and short stories.
He worked in various other jobs throughout his life, but mainly in window trimming and interior display for department stores. According to his son, Barnett, Hagell could not make a living from his art because if he showed in New York his work was considered too Canadian and in Toronto it was too western. He was not a good salesman for his own work as he considered the people who attended the exhibition cocktail parties to be phoney and insincere. He had a great love for the prairies and farming, and was a great storyteller, especially to children.

Joseph was born in 1844 in Hume, New York, and as a seven-year-old travelled west in the year 1851 with his LDS (Mormon) pioneer family. In line with LDS teachings of the time, Joseph became a polygamist and had two wives. Cynthia was his second wife. She was born in Weber County, Utah, in 1860.
Hans was the sixth child born to Joseph and Cynthia, but only the second to live past infancy. After his birth, his parents were more successful and brought eight more children into the world, all but one of whom lived to adulthood.
In the late 1880s, the LDS Church was sending members north to colonize Southern Alberta, and on June 8, 1891, when Hans was not yet two years old, his parents took their two living children and moved to the brand new community of Cardston, Alberta, snuggled on the edge of the vast, untamed, Canadian prairie. Hans learned to fish and hunt, and even before his teenage years he was an expert marksman. During the day in his father’s blacksmith shop, he learned to be a blacksmith, a wheelwright, and a carpenter, and in the evening he studied books. While finishing high school, he learned to play several instruments. He was a member of the Cardston Military Band. He became a certified machinist, a master electrician, and a licensed plumber. Because he drove a tractor, aborigine friends on the Blood reservation next to Cardston called him Iron Horse. Some remained life-long friends.
On August 1, 1908, when nineteen years old, Hans went to Utah to attend Brigham Young College in Logan. He also studied through correspondence courses at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, the University of Missouri, and the Alberta Institute of Technology and Art, obtaining degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering.
For the first six years of his professional career, he worked for the US Reclamation Service on the St. Mary’s River project in Montana, but he still spent his weekends in Cardston, which was only twenty miles away. On one of these weekends, he met a young lady named Alice McClung from northern Ireland who was a recent convert to the LDS Church. On January 11, 1911, Alice became Mrs. Hans E. Wight. He was not quite 22 years old and she was 20.
An aside: Five years later, Hans’s younger brother Eugene married Alice’s younger sister Jenny, and their two families generated double cousins who grew up very close.
At that time the LDS Church was constructing a temple in Cardston; it was to be used to perform certain sacred ceremonies, and Hans was offered a job as construction engineer, thus beginning his professional life in Canada.
When the main part of the construction was finished, he accepted a position in Drumheller, Alberta, where, as a mine surveyor and master mechanic, he was instrumental in the development of its huge coal resources. He remained in Drumheller ten years. In addition to his mining duties he also taught night classes in mechanical, electrical, and steam engineering. When his family finally left Drumheller, he had three children: Elizabeth (Bessie) who was 14, Marjorie (Marge) who was 7, and Eileen who was 5.
To be nearer to the LDS community, he moved his family to Taber, Alberta, in 1926. He had obtained the position of Chief Engineer and Master Mechanic for the Leland Coal Company based in Chicago. He was responsible for all mine maintenance both above and below ground. In addition to its large land holdings and mining operations, Leland Coal supplied the district with electricity. Their electric system was later purchased by the Calgary Power Company, and Hans became involved in extending power lines throughout Southern Alberta as well as in building power and light systems for its towns. Soon he relocated to Lethbridge, Alberta. However, his Calgary Power Company job required that he be away from home too much, so he resigned and accepted a position at the newly constructed Lethbridge Government Grain and Storage Elevator.
In 1935, Hans campaigned for the new Social Credit Party and was elected Member of the Alberta legislative assembly (MLA) for Lethbridge by a landslide. In 1937, he resigned under pressure. Someone was leaking sensitive political information to the Lethbridge Herald, and Social Credit leadership suspected him (probably correctly). He moved to Calgary and became Chief Engineer of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Calgary department store where he remained until World War II.
In 1941 Hans left the Hudson’s Bay Company and enlisted at the rank of Pilot Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He had hoped to work on the Alaskan Highway as an engineer, but was instead deployed to air bases across the Prairie Provinces and Newfoundland where he was charged with maintaining and constructing airbase facilities. At the same time, he was often assigned to organize recreation and entertainment for the airmen.
He was released from active duty with the rank of Flight Lieutenant in February, 1945, and moved to Bremerton, Washington, where he was hired as an electrical engineer repairing American ships, mostly destroyers, damaged in Pacific Ocean warfare. He performed this work until the Japanese surrender. Then he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Hans was 55 years old when he returned to the USA, and he remained there the remainder of his life working as surveyor, city engineer, construction engineer, and city manager in cities throughout northern Utah. He also lived in Los Angeles where he was employed in the development of the San Clemente Island Missile Base for the US military.
He died in Salt lake City, Utah on October 12, 1965, at 76 years of age, leaving behind his wife Alice and their three daughters. Although only the oldest daughter married, she had seven children, and those children now have over one hundred descendants.

Arthur Henry Harwood was born in Oxfordshire, England on May 11, 1876. Little is known about his early life except for the fact that at age 13 he apprenticed as a cook and was employed by the Prince of Wales at Sandringham House. He also operated a catering business in Watford, England.
In 1905, at the age of 29, he and his wife and their son, Stephen, immigrated to Calgary, Alberta, after a visitor from that city offered to pay the fare for the family. In exchange, Harwood was to take charge of her Calgary restaurant.
Two years later, the family moved to Pincher Creek where Harwood opened the New Waldorf Hotel for Fred Kanouse, a man who was the partner to John George “Kootenai” Brown.
Harwood opened his own business in Pincher Creek in 1909 which was known as “The Hygenic Bakery and Restaurant”. In 1910 he applied for a homestead in the Twin Butte area between Pincher Creek and Waterton. For several summers he worked in Waterton Lakes National Park, returning each winter to his homestead. In 1908 and 1909, Harwood assisted a Mr. O’Hara, a dominion land surveyor, in laying out the initial lots for what would, in 1910, become the official townsite of Waterton Park.
Harwood soon became friends with John George “Kootenai” Brown, one of the first white settlers in the area. Brown was appointed Forest Ranger-in-Charge (often incorrectly referred to as the park’s first superintendent) in 1911 and was the man in charge of the park. So much did Harwood admire Brown that 20 years after his 1916 death, he personally built a stone cairn to Brown’s memory to recognize his place in history.
The fall of 1913, Harwood worked in the park as a cook for the government crew building the first traffic bridge over Blakiston Creek (then called Pass Creek). He also had the contract to haul mail from Pincher Creek to Waterton. He hauled the mail until 1930.
Harwood and his friend William Terrill of Twin Butte started a guiding and outfitting business providing extended backcountry hunting/guiding trips, often taking customers into British Columbia. Harwood was an avid fisherman and game bird hunter as well.
About 1915, Harwood built a log house in Waterton which was located across from Middle Waterton bay and in July, 1919 he was officially appointed Waterton’s post master using his own residence as the post office. He moved to a new location on Fountain Avenue circa 1927 which was used as his personal residence and post office. He continued to serve as post master until 1949 or 1950 when he retired and moved to Victoria, British Columbia.
During his years in Waterton he also served as a justice of the peace and later magistrate for both the provincial and federal governments. He was described as being a tireless community worker who was a charter member and second president of the Waterton Park Lions Club. He also helped raise money for the establishment of the Waterton Lions Community Hall.
Mr. Harwood’s first wife died circa 1922 and he married Mrs. Minnie Kate Parker. Stephen Harwood spent his entire working life in Waterton first as park chauffeur and then mechanic, no mean feat given the fact that at age 16 he lost his left arm in a firearms accident. Stephen learned the art of photography/developing from his father, delving into advanced techniques such as taking photos with a self-timer.
Stephen married Marjorie Cathcart and together they raised son Marvin in a home they built on Evergreen Avenue in Waterton.
Arthur H. Harwood died in 1971 at the age of 94 in Victoria, British Columbia. His wife Minnie died at the age of 94 in 1977 in the same city. Their cremains and those of his son and daughter in law were buried in the Waterton Lakes National Park cemetery.

History / Biographical
John Joseph Taylor (born 25 June 1915) and Marguerite Taylor (nee Grisak, 14 April 1917-1 December 1984) were married in 1940. John joined the military in November of 1942 and trained in Camrose, AB; Chilliwack, BC and Prince George, BC before deployment to France where he was injured twice on D-Day. Afterwards, he was sent to Birmingham General Hospital in England to recover from a severe arm would before his return to Canada. They had one son, Grange Taylor, born in the summer of 1943 while John was stationed in Chilliwack.
While he was away Marguerite wrote “Johnny” frequently, sometimes multiple letters in a single day. She would often start by reminding him how much she missed him and then reassure him that she, and later the baby were doing fine in spite of how much they missed him. Marguerite often writes of how she prays for John and that the war will end soon. She would recount the goings on of her day and what she had done since she had last written and how she cherished his letters. Several letters mention ones that she did not send because she felt they were too sad and did not want to bring him down since he was already so far from home. Early on she writes of a fear of the doctor, but that she will go because she is pregnant and that John would want her to go. She also recounts local gossip regarding the local prisoner of war camp and the dances that she goes to with her friend Annie. She signs most of her letters with a lipstick kiss and “I love you 60 millions & millions more then last time” or something similar.
Prior to his military service John was as an industrial painter working at the airports being built for military flight training that were built across southern Alberta. As a result, he developed what they would later discover to be lead poisoning from the lead-based paint. Throughout his military career he was afflicted with ill-health. He would later be diagnosed with Huntington’s Correa, as would his son Grange.
Marguerite was a devout catholic and an original member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in north Lethbridge. She and John lived in Lethbridge until 1961 when they moved to Calgary so that John could find work. While John was away with the military she lived with her family and upon his return they purchased a house through the veteran’s housing program.
John was an avid photographer and artist. Included in the donation are several examples of his drawing and photography including photographs of his family and military companions and drawings from his time overseas.

History / Biographical
The Lethbridge Artists’ Club first began when a group of citizens interested in organizing an art exhibition in 1932, held at the YMCA. By 1936, a number of Lethbridge artists decided to create a club to organize regular exhibitions and art classes that were previously offered on an irregular and informal basis. A meeting in October of that year at the home of Anna MacKenzie formalized the creation of the Lethbridge Sketch Club, with Miss Mackenzie serving as president. The club held meetings, classes, annual exhibitions and outings to various sites in southwestern Alberta.
Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson would attend club events and outings while visiting his brother Ernest in Lethbridge. His avant garde landscapes and enthusiasm for on-site sketching provided an influence to members of the Sketch Club in its early years. Further influences on the group were the instructors of the Banff School of Fine Arts, where the Club would send an annual scholarship winner, and the instructors of an annual summer session held in Lethbridge. The most frequent instructor of these sessions was H.G. Glyde of the Technical Institute in Calgary and later the University of Alberta.
Over the years membership in the club grew and the club attained a more permanent space at the former Bowman School through a favorable agreement with Lethbridge School District # 51. When the building passed to the City of Lethbridge in 1963, City Council agreed to maintain the terms of the agreement the Club had with the School District. This agreement provided a basis for the establishment of the Bowman Arts Centre, as other arts and crafts groups and the Historical Society were also offered space in the building and classes were offered daily by a variety of groups of the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge.
The Club continued to organize regular classes, workshops, demonstrations, and outings and was able to present two exhibitions annually of works by its members. Sometime after 2002 the club was renamed the Lethrbidge Artists’ Club.

The Lethbridge Fire Department began in the town of Lethbridge in 1885 with the Bucket Brigade. There were several factors for this. The buildings were chiefly wood, rainfall in the area was low and the westerly winds were prevalent in the region. One factor to deter fires were the 100 foot wide streets.
The first organized fire protection was provided by the NWMP in 1886. In 1887 a volunteer hook and ladder company was formed with W. D. Whitney as chief, A. J. Scot, first assistant chief, E. J. Hoddert, second assistant chief. J. D. Higinbotham was secretary-treasurer.
When Lethbridge was incorporated as a town in 1891, the new town council had fire protection as their first order of business. In that same year a Volunteer Fire Brigade with William Colpman as chief was formed. In subsequent years other Fire Brigades were organized each with their own chief, assistant chiefs and members. The fire brigade was reorganized in 1902 and those elected became paid members.
By 1909 a professional fire department was created. The men were on duty 24 hours per day seven days per week. Minute Books were introduced by Chief Kilkenny in 1909 listing the duty officer, persons on leave, exact time of fire calls and action taken, changes in location of men and equipment. Uniforms were introduced in 1909 and in 1912 the first Firemen's Association Contest between towns took place. In 1912, the Fire Department also began the combined model of fire suppression and emergency medical services.
As the town grew incorporation was once again realized. In 1906 Lethbridge became a city. The population grew in three directions, north south and east and more fire stations were built to service the areas. No. 2 was built on the north side of the tracks at 2nd Avenue and 13th Street. A third fire hall was built in the 1960's. By 1920 the Lethbridge Fire Department was a fully professional body who could handle any emergency that occurred. Fire Prevention Programs begun as early as 1935 when Chief Lindsay introduced inspections to individual homes and fire drills began in the schools.
Through the war years, the fire department held various courses teaching military firemen to handle pumpers and large equipment. The fire Department ambulance was constantly used for transported trainee crash victims to the Galt Hospital. Following the war improvements were made to both the member numbers and equipment including a two-way radio communications system and fire alarm boxes. Restrictions on sales and use of fireworks were dealt with in the late 1950's and by the early 1970's the sale of fireworks were banned.
New fire stations were built in the 1970's. One to replace the old No. 2 which became the fire headquarters and training center located on 5th Avenue and 28th Street North and another on the west side at Jerry Potts Boulevard. The fire box system was abandoned in favor of a more effective communication-the telephone. Wooden ladders were replaced by lighter, stronger more serviceable aluminum ones.
In 1985, computers were introduced to the fire department and were used to provide a preplan of many of the larger buildings, hydrant locations, fire department connections, sprinkler controls, exits, hazards etc. City Council also approved the implementation of an advance life support program and hired the first advanced care paramedics.
In 1986 the Lethbridge Fire department celebrated its 100 anniversary. A lot of changes, improvements had occurred and with the modern fire fighting techniques many young men were becoming fire fighters to protect the public from any disasters such as fire, flood, explosion, cyclone of mechanical disaster.
1994 Police moves into its own building.
In 1998 the department hired the first female firefighter, Bonnie Williams. Her great grandfather Jack King was a Lethbridge firefighter in the 1920-30’s.
2001 fire department gets thermal imaging cameras.
2002 Chief T. Wickersham retires and the city hires Brian Cornforth as the new chief. The dispatch centre of fire/EMS merged with police dispatch to form the Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC).
2003 Council approved $250,000 for a one-time funding for Advanced Life Support equipment. These units were placed on all frontline fire apparatus. Having advanced care paramedics on fire vehicles allow them to respond to emergency calls anywhere in the city and provide lifesaving care even when an ambulance is unavailable.
2005 Revised disaster services plan and bylaw. Plan outlines three levels of emergencies. Level one, less than eight hours and has little impact on the city. Level two, less than eight hours and moderate impact on city that may require additional support from other services. Level three, longer duration and will have high impact on the city which will require government support. Rope rescue training exercise also implemented.
2009 Alberta Health Services assumes governance of all emergency medical services (EMS) in the province. The city of Lethbridge becomes a contracted provider of EMS for the city of Lethbridge.
2011 New Headquarters (station 1) opens on 4th avenue south and renovations are completed on station 4 located at 5 avenue and 28 street north. Large grassfire starts on the Blood Reserve and threatens the west side of the city when it crosses the Oldman River on November 27 (Grey Cup day).
2012 The department celebrates 100 years providing EMS services in an integrated system. From our research, Lethbridge is the oldest integrated (fire/EMS) system in North America. A weeklong celebration of events were planned and an art piece was commissioned to remember the event. September 10 another large grassfire starts on the Blood Reserve and threatens the west side of the city and the town of Coalhurst when it crosses the Oldman River.
2013 flooding in High River and Calgary creates significant damage to the respective communities. Lethbridge sends numerous individuals to assist in the recovery efforts. Lethbridge also experiences high water but infrastructure is protected.
2014 The department receives EMS accreditation through Accreditation Canada – first integrated service in Canada to achieve accreditation. December - Chief B. Cornforth takes a position with Edmonton Fire Rescue Service.
2015 Rich Hildebrand is promoted to chief of the department. The Fire Smart Program begins to be implemented as a way to decrease fire risk in the transition zone where wild land and urban development meet.
2016 Fort McMurray wildfires damage huge areas of the city and forces the evacuation of 88,000 people. Lethbridge sends individuals to provide incident management support, critical incident stress management (CISM) support, dispatch assistance and inspection services over several weeks.
2017 Council gives support to build another station on the west side of the city. When station 2 was first built on the west side of the city in 1980 there was a population of around 4000 however today the west side population is approaching 40 000. Hiring will take place in 2018, 1019 and 2020 to have staffing ready to fill the hall in 2020 when it is scheduled to be completed.
2018 – Department receives “accreditation with commendation” from Accreditation Canada. First hiring for the new station begins – 10 recruits

The Mathesis Club of Lethbridge was organized on 11 September 1912 by a group of nine women who were interested in self education and self improvement during a period in the city’s history when formal educational opportunities for women were very rare. The club name was taken from a Greek word meaning "searcher of knowledge". A committee consisting of Mrs. Alice J. Heeb, Mrs. Cumming and Mrs. Maurine Daniel was appointed to draft a constitution for the new club. The club’s objectives as stated in that constitution included "self-improvement and united effort toward the highest development of home and community".
The first officers of the Mathesis Club were Mrs. F. Stoltze (president), Mrs. A. M. Lafferty (vice president), Mrs. Alice J. Heeb (secretary), Mrs. F. Cumming (treasurer). The club was organized into ‘departments’ that reflected the study interests of the members: Music and Art, History and Literature. Members chose topics of interest from these broad categories and then researched, wrote and presented a paper on their topic at the regular meetings. When the club began meetings were held every two weeks, but later the meeting schedule became monthly.
In addition to the departmental programs, meetings frequently featured guest speakers who presented on a variety of topics ranging from religion to scientific advances. At the time there was no public library in Lethbridge and the group arranged to borrow thirty books from the collection of McGill University in Montreal which would remain in the home of one of the members for the use of any of those in the group.
During the First World War members joined the local Council of Women and Traveler’s Aid to work through those organizations. Fundraising teas and other events were also held. In World War II the club entertained the armed forces for a week.
Membership in the club reached a high in 1917 with 87 members, by 2002 the membership had fallen to 20. Over the years, educational and self-improvement programs became widely available for women and the role of the Mathesis Club as a provider of those opportunities was diminished. A declining and aging membership put more and more pressure on the club, until in 2007 the members decided to dissolve the Mathesis Club. The final meeting was held at Luigi’s Restaurant, 1119 Mayor Magrath Drive South, on 19 June 2007.
