History / Biographical
Edward Fredric "Teddy" Hagell was born June 20, 1895 in Coaldale, Alberta. His father, Edward Hagell, arrived in Lethbridge from England in about 1800 with his wife, who died with the birth of her first child, Cora. Edward Hagell started the first newspaper in southern Alberta. Edward and Ellen (2nd wife) had four children: violet, Freda, Albert, and Edward (teddy).
Teddy began drawing at the age of 2 1/2 years, winning numerous competitions without having any formal training. He was a self-taught artist, though he did take some lessons in etching while in Vancouver. E.F. Hagell gained fame as a Canadian range rider and artist, depicting the early cattle country in much of his work. His father and two uncles homesteaded and established the 'Three Links' cattle ranch west of Cardston, in the Mountain View district. Hagell's own experience of ranching complemented his love of the outdoors, from which he developed his own unique style in the tradition of artists such as Rosa Bonheur, Charles Russell, and Fredrick Remington.
Hagell married Cora Marie Pelletier in 1919 and the couple left for Los Angeles that year. They had three children born in 1920, 1922, and 1923, before moving to Vancouver in 1929. Hagell had the first one-man exhibition at the Vancouver art gallery when it opened in 1932. That year the family returned to Coaldale, where they stayed until moving to Calgary in 1935, and back to Lethbridge two years later. In the mid 1940s the Hagells moved to Brampton, Ontario, where they remained until settling in pincher creek in 1952. E.F. Hagell returned to Lethbridge just prior to his death in 1964, at the age of 69.
The work of E.F. Hagell is unique in that it was confined exclusively to prairie and mountain scenes of western Canada. Many of his works reproduced incidents he saw and experienced and most pieces were done in pen and ink. Every one of his drawings or paintings contained at least one animal; he had little interest in depicting people. Hagell wished, through his work, to preserve the history of the early days of the west before mechanization was introduced. Hagell received international recognition through a series of prints and etchings circulated through the Canadian national parks. Collections of his work were shown in or recognized by the Beaver Club in London, the Royal Canadian Academy, the London Illustrated News, Vista Del Arroya--Passadena, painters and etchers of Ontario, and the Glenbow foundation in Calgary (in 2006 Glenbow transferred a major part of their Hagel related artifacts to the Galt Museum & Archives. The Galt now holds the most significant collection of Hagel works.) His first major exhibition was in California, with subsequent shows in Oklahoma; Texas; the sportsman's show in Toronto; the Calgary Stampede; the 1951 Lethbridge Exhibition and Rodeo; the Calgary Petroleum Club; and an exhibit staged posthumously by his wife in 1970, at the Provincial Museum in Victoria, B.C.. During his career as an artist, hagell painted and drew about 1500 works. He also began writing in 1930, later publishing a collection of poems and short stories.
He worked in various other jobs throughout his life, but mainly in window trimming and interior display for department stores. According to his son, Barnett, Hagell could not make a living from his art because if he showed in New York his work was considered too Canadian and in Toronto it was too western. He was not a good salesman for his own work as he considered the people who attended the exhibition cocktail parties to be phoney and insincere. He had a great love for the prairies and farming, and was a great storyteller, especially to children.

Arthur Henry Harwood was born in Oxfordshire, England on May 11, 1876. Little is known about his early life except for the fact that at age 13 he apprenticed as a cook and was employed by the Prince of Wales at Sandringham House. He also operated a catering business in Watford, England.
In 1905, at the age of 29, he and his wife and their son, Stephen, immigrated to Calgary, Alberta, after a visitor from that city offered to pay the fare for the family. In exchange, Harwood was to take charge of her Calgary restaurant.
Two years later, the family moved to Pincher Creek where Harwood opened the New Waldorf Hotel for Fred Kanouse, a man who was the partner to John George “Kootenai” Brown.
Harwood opened his own business in Pincher Creek in 1909 which was known as “The Hygenic Bakery and Restaurant”. In 1910 he applied for a homestead in the Twin Butte area between Pincher Creek and Waterton. For several summers he worked in Waterton Lakes National Park, returning each winter to his homestead. In 1908 and 1909, Harwood assisted a Mr. O’Hara, a dominion land surveyor, in laying out the initial lots for what would, in 1910, become the official townsite of Waterton Park.
Harwood soon became friends with John George “Kootenai” Brown, one of the first white settlers in the area. Brown was appointed Forest Ranger-in-Charge (often incorrectly referred to as the park’s first superintendent) in 1911 and was the man in charge of the park. So much did Harwood admire Brown that 20 years after his 1916 death, he personally built a stone cairn to Brown’s memory to recognize his place in history.
The fall of 1913, Harwood worked in the park as a cook for the government crew building the first traffic bridge over Blakiston Creek (then called Pass Creek). He also had the contract to haul mail from Pincher Creek to Waterton. He hauled the mail until 1930.
Harwood and his friend William Terrill of Twin Butte started a guiding and outfitting business providing extended backcountry hunting/guiding trips, often taking customers into British Columbia. Harwood was an avid fisherman and game bird hunter as well.
About 1915, Harwood built a log house in Waterton which was located across from Middle Waterton bay and in July, 1919 he was officially appointed Waterton’s post master using his own residence as the post office. He moved to a new location on Fountain Avenue circa 1927 which was used as his personal residence and post office. He continued to serve as post master until 1949 or 1950 when he retired and moved to Victoria, British Columbia.
During his years in Waterton he also served as a justice of the peace and later magistrate for both the provincial and federal governments. He was described as being a tireless community worker who was a charter member and second president of the Waterton Park Lions Club. He also helped raise money for the establishment of the Waterton Lions Community Hall.
Mr. Harwood’s first wife died circa 1922 and he married Mrs. Minnie Kate Parker. Stephen Harwood spent his entire working life in Waterton first as park chauffeur and then mechanic, no mean feat given the fact that at age 16 he lost his left arm in a firearms accident. Stephen learned the art of photography/developing from his father, delving into advanced techniques such as taking photos with a self-timer.
Stephen married Marjorie Cathcart and together they raised son Marvin in a home they built on Evergreen Avenue in Waterton.
Arthur H. Harwood died in 1971 at the age of 94 in Victoria, British Columbia. His wife Minnie died at the age of 94 in 1977 in the same city. Their cremains and those of his son and daughter in law were buried in the Waterton Lakes National Park cemetery.
