ELIZABETH "BESSIE" WATSON [NEE REED], THE NEEDDLEWORKER, WAS ELDEST DAUGHTER OF JOB AND MARY REED; LIVED NEXT DOOR WITH HUSBAND GEORGE H. WATSON IN DUPLEX ON 6 AVE. SO., BUILT BY JOB REED IN 1890. SEE FAMILY GALLERY FILE, 1997, FOR FURTHER HISTORY OF REED FAMILY. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING ONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REED FAMILY. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF JOB REED WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM AN ARTICLE ON THE REED FAMILY AND FARM FROM THE DECEMBER 30, 1985 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, REED'S DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT FROM 1906, AND THE GALT ARCHIVES. JOB REED WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND ON NOVEMBER 12, 1841. WHEN HE WAS 14, HIS FATHER DIED, LEAVING JOB THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH POSTAL SERVICE AND COMPLETED HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATION. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH HOBBS IN 1869, AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1873, MOVING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO TEXAS AND THEN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE REED OBTAINED A DEGREE IN MEDICINE. THE COUPLE RETURNED TO ENGLAND, BUT REED'S MEDICAL TRAINING WAS NOT RECOGNIZED THERE, AND IN 1882 THEY CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AGAIN, MOVING WEST ACROSS CANADA IN STAGES, FINALLY ARRIVING IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1886. THE FAMILY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: RICHARD, HENRY, ELIZABETH (WHO MARRIED GEORGE HERBERT WATSON), JOB JUNIOR (KNOWN AS BUDD), GEORGE, ANNIE, AND ELLA. REED PURCHASED TWO LOTS ON WHAT IS NOW 6TH AVENUE SOUTH. THE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED A MARKET GARDEN ON THE PROPERY, AND BUILT A STONE DUPLEX THAT STILL STANDS ON THE 1200 BLOCK OF 6TH AVENUE. REED WORKED AS A COAL MINER TO EARN MORE MONEY TOWARDS INVESTING IN FURTHER LAND, AND RAISED PIGS WITH SCRAP FOOD FROM THE NEARBY RCMP BARRACKS. IN 1901, REED PURCHASED 2.5 SECTIONS OF LAND NEAR PRESENT-DAY GRANUM WITH HIS FOUR SONS AND ONE SON-IN-LAW; HIS SON BILLY LATER TOOK OVER THIS RANCH. REED WAS A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE IN LETHBRIDGE AND A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD. IN EARLY 1906, HE PURCHASED EDGEHILL FARM, NEAR SIX MILE COULEE, BUT HE DIED LATER THAT YEAR ON APRIL 25. MARY REED LIVED AT THE FARM FOR YEARS AFTERWARD, AND DIED IN KELOWNA, B.C. IN 1932 AT HOME OF ONE OF HER SONS. BOTH JOB AND MARY REED ARE BURIED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY IN LETHBRIDGE. PURPLE AND WHITE FLOWER IN CENTER, WITH GREEN LEAVES AND VINES. PATTERN AT BOTTOM OF RIBBON INCLUDES CREST SHAPE WITH FLEUR-DE-LIS AT TOP, AND A TULIP AT EITHER SIDE. BELONGED TO DONOR'S FAMILY. WOVEN BY THOMAS STEVENS OF COVENTRY, ENGLAND. STEVENGRAPHS DATE BACK TO THE 1860S, WHEN THE LIFTING OF IMPORT RESTRICTIONS ON SILK AND RIBBONS WIPED OUT THE DOMINANT INDUSTRY OF COVENTRY. WHILE THOUSANDS HAD TO EMIGRATE, STEVENS REMAINED, AND EVOLVED TECHNIQUES WHICH MADE IT POSSIBLE TO WEAVE SILKEN MINIATURES BY PROGRAMMING THE LOOM WITH CARDS. ALTHOUGH TENS OF THOUSANDS WERE PRODUCED BETWEEN 1862 AND 1914, PLUS A FEW UP TO 1939, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DESIGNS WAS ONLY 188. IN 1940, THE COMPANY'S PRODUCTION MANAGER TOOK A SAMPLE BOOK CONTAINING EVERY DESIGN, HOME FROM THE FACTORY. THE SAME NIGHT, THE COVENTRY AIR RAID DEMOLISHED THE STEVENS PLANT. THE COLLECTION OF SAMPLES IS NOW IN THE CITY'S MUSEUM. *UPDATE* IN 2018, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILES AND ACCESSORIES, INCLUDING A BELT BUCKLE DONATED BY AGNES BAINES (NEE GIBSON). LETHBRIDGE HERALD RESEARCH INDICATES THAT BAINES WAS BORN ON 20 JANUARY 1912 IN CARSTAIRS, ALBERTA. HER SIBLINGS WERE MILDRED BOS, JEAN MORGAN (D. 2000 IN EDMONTON, AB), ROBERT GIBSON, AND A BROTHER WHO PASSED AWAY AS AN INFANT. SHE MARRIED AL BAINES ON 31 DECEMBER 1941. BAINES’ OBITUARY STATES THAT THE COUPLE RESIDED IN LETHBRIDGE FROM 1945 ONWARDS. SHE PASSED AWAY ON 3 AUGUST 1999 AT THE AGE OF 87 YEARS. HER HUSBAND, AL BAINES, WAS BORN IN LUNDBRECK, ALBERTA IN 1909. ACCORDING TO LETHBRIDGE HERALD RESEARCH, HIS FATHER CAME TO THE AREA IN 1903 TO PUT A NEW RAIL LINE OVER THE FRANK SLIDE IN THE CROWSNEST PASS, ALBERTA. NORTHERN PLAINS INDIANS. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON ASKED TWO FORMER MEMBERS OF THE LETHBRIDGE JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, PHIL EDMUNDSON AND PAUL RUSZNAK, ABOUT THE FIRST NATIONS ARTIFACTS THAT THE GROUP DONATED TO THE GALT MUSEUM IN 1964, 1969, AND 1973. NEITHER RECALLED HOW THE JAYCEES CAME INTO OWNERSHIP OF THE ARTIFACTS, AS THEIR ACQUISITION PREDATED BOTH EDMUNDSON AND RUSZNAK’S MEMBERSHIP IN THE CHAMBER. RESEARCH CONDUCTED INTO LETHBRIDGE’S GURNEY MUSEUM FOUND A CONNECTION BETWEEN ITS PROPRIETOR, WALTER GURNEY, AND THE JAYCEES, WHO ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE FROM THE APRIL 16, 1946 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ADVOCATED ON GURNEY’S BEHALF FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE TO THE FORMER BOARD OF TRADE BUILDING WHERE THE MUSEUM WAS HOUSED. AN ARTICLE FROM THE JULY 13, 1948 ISSUE OF THE HERALD DESCRIBES SOME OF THE FIRST NATIONS ARTIFACTS ON DISPLAY IN THE MUSEUM: “TOMAHAWKS, ARROW HEADS, PEACE PIPES, BEAD AND LEATHER WORK, CLOTHING AND WOODCRAFT”. UPON THE CLOSURE OF THE MUSEUM AND SALE OF GURNEY’S COLLECTION TO BELMORE SCHULTZ OF THE ALTAMONT MUSEUM IN COUTTS, MENTION WAS MADE IN A HERALD ARTICLE FROM MAY 16, 1961 OF “HISTORICAL INDIAN RELICS THAT BELONG TO THE JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAVE BEEN RETAINED IN THE CITY AND WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN PROPER DISPLAY FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE”. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ARTIFACTS WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE JAYCEES BY GURNEY DURING THE DISSOLUTION OF HIS MUSEUM, BUT NO FURTHER CONFIRMATION WAS FOUND. HER MOTHER, FANNY (NEE MAUGHAM) PASSED AWAY WHEN EDITH WAS A YOUNG GIRL AND HER FATHER REMARRIED. THE STORY, FROM SECOND HAND SOURCES, WAS THAT SHE AND HER STEP MOTHER DID NOT LIKE ONE ANOTHER. THIS PROVIDED TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE BECAUSE EDITH WAS SENT AWAY TO STUDY ART. EDITH STUDIED IN SOUTH KENSINGTON, LONDON AND PARIS. KIRK NEVER MARRIED AND, FOR SOME REASON, SHE DECIDED TO IMMIGRATE TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 46. SHE ARRIVED IN HALIFAX ABOARD THE HMS CANADA IN APRIL 1905. THE PASSENGER LIST INDICATED SHE WAS TRAVELING ON TO VANCOUVER AND HER OCCUPATION WAS LISTED AS A GOVERNESS. IT SEEMS SHE DIDN'T STAY LONG IN VANCOUVER BUT SOON TRAVELLED TO ATLIN, B.C. TO GET TO ATLIN, KIRK WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SHIP TO SKAGWAY, THE WHITE PASS RAILWAY TO CARCROSS AND THEN AN OVERLAND AND BOAT TRIP TO ATLIN. IT IS A MYSTERY WHY SHE CHOSE TO GO TO A REMOTE GOLD RUSH TOWN IN NORTH WESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA. NEXT WE FIND KIRK, IN 1911, BOARDING WITH THE WOODS FAMILY IN LILLOOET, NORTHWEST OF KAMLOOPS, B.C. THERE SHE IS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER. SEVEN YEARS LATER EDITH KIRK IS IN LETHBRIDGE. IT SEEMS SHE KNEW PEOPLE LIVING IN TABER, DR. ALFRED HAMMAN AND HIS SISTER MRS. SYLVIA GIDMAN, WHO CAME FROM HER HOMELAND IN ENGLAND SO CHOSE VISIT. THE CHARM OF THE PRAIRIE AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA ENTICED HER TO STAY. ACCORDING TO THE DONOR, KATHERINE IVES TWISS, SHE GOT THE BOX FROM EDITH KIRK. SHE SAID, "IT WAS HER MOTHER'S BOX. MISS KIRK GAVE IT TO MY MOTHER [ETTA HENDERSON IVES] TO GIVE TO ME." TWISS WAS GIVEN THE BOX BECAUSE SHE WAS A "STUDENT AND FRIEND" OF KIRK. THE DONATION WAS BROUGHT IN BY TWISS'S DAUGHTER, K.A. STEEL, IN HER LETTER SHE WRITES, "WHEN MISS KIRK PASSED AWAY SHE LEFT AN ANTIQUE JEWELLERY-TYPE BOX... TO TWISS.... MISS KIRK SAYS THAT THE BOX BELONGED TO HER MOTHER AND WAS OVER 100 YEARS OLD. MOST OF ITS CONTENTS WERE VERY OLD AND BROKEN DOWN, BUT VERY INTERESTING. THIS BOX WAS THE ONLY POSSESSION THAT MISS KIRK HAD, AND SHE MUST HAVE LOVED IT DEARLY. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ALL THAT SHE HAD OF HER MOTHER. SHE BROUGHT IT ALL THE WAY FROM ENGLAND, AND KEPT IT SAFE ALL THROUGHOUT HER LIFE... [WHEN SHE CAME TO LETHBRIDGE] SHE MET MRS. MARGARET (ETTA) HENDERSON IVES, WHO HAD BEEN BORN IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1890, AND THEY BECAME FRIENDS. MISS KIRK GOT SET UP IN A SMALL APARTMENT AND TAUGHT ART LESSONS. MRS. ETTA IVES HAD BOTH OF HER DAUGHTERS, MARGARET AND KATHARINE, TAKE ART LESSONS FROM MISS KIRK. MRS. IVES ALSO BOUGHT A NUMBER OF PAINTINGS FROM MISS KIRK. MISS KIRK WAS A LOVELY, DECENT WOMAN. MARGARET TOOK LESSONS BUT DIDN'T LOVE ART. KATHARINE LOVED ART AND WAS GIVEN MANY, MANY LESSONS. WHEN SHE LOOKS BACK SHE THINKS SHE WAS GIVEN SO MANY LESSONS NOT ONLY TO LEARN TO PAINT, BUT ALSO TO HELP MISS KIRK MAKE A LIVING. MISS KIRK HAD A TINY APARTMENT WHERE KATHARINE TOOK HER LESSONS. KATHARINE REMEMBERS THAT MISS KIRK ONLY HAD A HOT PLATE TO COOK HER MEALS ON. SHE REMEMBERS THAT MISS KIRK ALWAYS SEEMED TO BE COOKING AN EGG FOR HER MEAL. BELOW THIS ARE TWO WHITE RUFFLES. BONNET HAS A LONG WIDE STRIP OF MATERIAL SEWN TO EACH SIDE, THAT ACT AS TIES. SEAMS ARE COMING LOOSE; STITCHES ARE LARGE AND LOOSE.

LACE IS EMBROIDERED WITH BLACK FLOWERS THROUGHOUT. ALL EDGES ARE ALSO EMBROIDERED WITH A BORDER. EDGES ARE FRAYING, AND COMING APART IN SOME PLACES. THERE ARE HOLES IN THE LACE, TOWARDS THE ENDS OF SHAWL. ALSO HAS LOOSE THREADS.

THIS CORNER OF THE SHEET IS MADE OUT OF AN ADDITIONAL RECTANGLE OF FABRIC, SEWN TO THE MAIN PIECE. SHEET HAS A 6.5 CM TEAR IN IT, AND A FEW SMALLER TEARS AND HOLES IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA. MULTIPLE BROWN STAINS AND SPOTS THROUGHOUT.

SHALLOW BONNET WITH NARROW BRIM. THE BONNET IS MADE OF AN OFF-WHITE LACE. THE LACE HAS BEEN GATHERED AND FORMED INTO RUFFLES ON TOP OF HAT. BRIM OF HAT CONSISTS OF TWO BANDS OF LACE. ON BACK OF HAT IS A WIDE, DARK RED, SATIN RIBBON, THAT HAS BEEN TIED INTO A BOW. ENDS OF RIBBON ARE FRAYING. THERE ARE MULTIPLE LOOSE THREADS AT BACK AND UNDERSIDE. UNDERSIDE IS LINED WITH WHITE TRANSLUCENT NETTING. BONNET IS DIRTY, AND YELLOWED.

THE GROUP OF TASSELS IS THEN CROSSED WITH THE GROUP ON EITHER SIDE, AND TIED IN A KNOT, AND THEN REPEATED, TO FORM A CRISS CROSS PATTERN. SCARF IS OTHERWISE PLAIN, EXCEPT FOR SOME WHITISH STAINS, MAINLY ON ONE SIDE. TASSELS ARE TANGLED TOGETHER.
