ALL ITEMS WERE USED IN LETHBRIDGE. HERBERT HOLT, WAS BORN IN NORTH WALES AND SERVED IN THE KING'S LIVERPOOL REGIMENT DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR. HE CAME TO CANADA IN 1922 AND IN JANUARY 1923 JOINED THE STAFF OF THE FORT SASKATCHEWAN PROVINCIAL JAIL AS A GUARD. HE BECAME DEPUTY WARDEN THERE IN NOVEMBER 1936, AND SERVED IN THAT CAPACITY UNTIL HIS PROMOTION TO WARDEN AT THE LETHBRIDGE JAIL IN 1940. HERB'S VISION OF REHABILITATION INCLUDED "MEANINGFUL" WORK FOR PRISONERS, RESULTING IN FIELD WORK GROWING VEGETABLE CROPS AND WHEAT, RAISING CATTLE AND HOGS, AS WELL AS WORKING IN THE PRISON BUTCHER SHOP, BAKERY, CANNERY, AND CREAMERY. IN ADDITION, PRISONERS BEAUTIFIED THE GROUNDS BY WORKING ON FLOWER BEDS AND BUILDING STONE FENCES, CREATING AN ATTRACTIVE PARK IN THE "FRONT YARD" OF THE JAIL. HERB WAS MADE AN HONOURARY CHIEF BY THE PEIGAN NATION IN 1949 FOR HIS EFFORTS TO PROVIDE MEANINGFUL WORK TO NATIVE INMATES. HERB WAS APPOINTED MAGISTRATE IN AND FOR THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA IN AUGUST 1950, AND HELD THIS POST UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1959. ADA HOLT (NEE MOYER) WAS BORN IN ONTARIO IN 1907; HER PARENTS MOVED OUTSIDE FORT SASKATCHEWAN IN 1909 WHERE THEY HOMESTEADED ON A FARM. AS A YOUNG WOMAN ADA WORKED FOR FIVE YEARS AT THE GENERAL STORE. ADA MET HERB IN FORT SASKATCHEWAN, AND THEY MARRIED IN 1935. ADA CONTINUED TO CALL LETHBRIDGE HER HOME AFTER HER HUSBAND'S DEATH UNTIL 1998 WHEN SHE SUFFERED A STROKE. SHE PASSED AWAY AT THE BEVERLY CENTRE IN JANUARY OF 2000. History
AFTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR, THE RAYMOND AND MAGRATH BOARDS OF TRADE SUCCEEDED IN CONVINCING THE UTAH-IDAHO SUGAR COMPANY TO MOVE ITS IDLE SUNNYSIDE, WA. PLANT TO RAYMOND IN 1925. A NEW COMPANY WAS FORMED TO OPERATE UNDER A CANADIAN CHARTER, CALLED "CANADIAN SUGAR FACTORIES, LTD.". AFTER A DISASTEROUS HARVEST IN 1930, THE PARENT COMPANY SOLD THE RAYMOND PLANT TO B.C. SUGAR REFINING CO. VANCOUVER, IN APRIL OF 1931, MAKING THE COMPANY COMPLETELY CANADIAN OWNED. THE PLANT AND RAYMOND'S BEET-GROWING AREA EXPANDED, AND A SECOND AND THIRD PLANT OPENED IN PICTURE BUTTE (1936) AND TABER (1950). TABER'S MODERN PLANT WITH LARGER CAPACITY RESULTED IN ITS BECOMING THE CENTRE OF ALBERTA'S SUGAR INDUSTRY. IN 1963, THE RAYMOND PLANT CLOSED, AND SUBSEQUENTLY THE PICTURE BUTTE PLANT, IN 1977. THE NAME OF THE COMPANY CHANGED IN 1977 FROM CANADIAN SUGAR FACTORIES TO ALBERTA SUGAR CO., OPERATING AS A DIVISION OF B.C. SUGAR.

DONATED IN MEMORY OF MRS. AGNES SHORT, WHO WAS A NURSE IN LETHBRIDGE UNTIL C. 1970. HELPED WITH FIRST POLIO VACCINATION HERE, AND WAS PART OF THE HEALTH CLINIC FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS. FATHER WAS WILLIAM H. SHORT, WHO WAS THE LAST FIRE CHIEF OF THE OLD NO.1 FIREHALL IN LETHBRIDGE. *UPDATE* IN 2016 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT RUTHANN LABLANCE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF CLOTHING, INCLUDING A BELT DONATED BY SHARON DEREK. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. THE DONOR, SHARON DERRICK, IS THE NIECE OF AGNES SHORT. AGNES CHRISTINA SHORT WAS BORN ON APRIL 20, 1916 TO WILLIAM H. AND BERTHA SHORT (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). SHE GRADUATED FROM LETHBRIDGE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE AND THEN ATTDNED THE CALGARY GENERAL HOSPITAL FOR NURSING TRAINING, WHICH SHE GRADUATED FROM IN 1939. AGNES WAS THE SUPERVISOR AT THE GALT HOSPITAL FROM 1939-1945. SHE WAS IN CHARGE OF THE NURSING STAFF OF LETHBRIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT #51 FROM 1947 UNTIL 1958. SHE WAS ALSO THE DIRECTOR OF NURSING AT THE LETHBRIDGE HEALTH UNIT FROM 1964 UNTIL HER RETIREMENT. SHE RETIRED IN 1980 AFTER 42 YEARS OF NURSING. AGNES PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 78 ON OCTOBER 20, 1994. WILLIAM HENRY SHORT WAS AGNES’S FATHER. HE WAS BORN IN LONDON, ENGLAND IN 1889 AND MOVED TO CANADA IN 1909. HE INITIALLY WORKED FOR THE CITY WATERWORKS DEPARTMENT IN LETHBRIDGE FOR TWO YEARS, BEFORE SPENDING 51 YEARS IN SERVICE OF THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT. HE OVERSAW THE INTRODUCTION OF MOTORIZED FIRE ENGINES, SWITCHING FROM HORSE POWERED WAGONS, IN 1913. HE ALSO SAW THE DEPARTMENT GROW IN SIZE FROM ONLY 13 TO 49 MEN. HE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 84 ON NOVEMBER 18, 1974. WILLIAM’S WIFE BERTHA L. SHORT PASSED AWAY ON JULY 28, 1989. ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE ABOUT AGNES’S LIFE, THE SHORT FAMILY LIVED IN NUMBER 1 FIRE HALL, WHERE WILLIAM WAS FIRE CHIEF. WILLIAM H. AND BERTHA ALSO HAD ANOTHER CHILD, WILLIAM D. SHORT. HE WAS BORN ON AUGUST 16, 1916 AND PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 5, 1990. HE WAS MARRIED TO MYRTLE (NEE NELSON) SHORT AND THEIR CHILDREN INCLUDE THE DONOR, SHARON DERRICK. SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR COPIES OF THE ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. *UPDATE* IN 2018 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILES AND ACCESSORIES INCLUDING A NUMBER OF ARTIFACTS DONATED BY SHARON DERRICK. ON 1 MARCH 2018, PUNDYK INTERVIEWED DERRICK REGARDING HER DONATION. THE INFORMATION BELOW HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM THAT INTERVIEW: A NUMBER OF ARTIFACTS DONATED WERE CONNECTED TO THE DONOR’S AUNT, AGNES SHORT AND HER CAREER AS THE SENIOR NURSE AT THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE HEALTH UNIT AND AT THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING. “[THE NURSING ITEMS] WOULD HAVE BEEN FROM THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE HEALTH UNIT, [WHERE] MY AUNT WAS THE SENIOR NURSE AT THE HEALTH UNIT… I HAVE NO IDEA [WHY SHE HELD ONTO THESE THINGS]. PROBABLY WHEN THERE WAS BIG MOVES, AND THEY PACKED EVERYTHING IN BOXES, AND MAY BE SOME OF HER PERSONAL STUFF WAS IN BOXES. I DON’T KNOW. [SOME THINGS WOULD ALSO] BE FROM THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING.” THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HISTORY BOOK TITLED, “LEGACY OF LETHBRIDGE WOMEN,” WRITTEN BY GEORGIA GREEN FOOKS, PATRICIA HAGEN, AND MARY OORDT AND PUBLISHED IN 2005: “AGNES SHORT’S LEGACY TO LETHBRIDGE STEMMED FROM HER EXEMPLARY CAREER IN NURSING AND FROM HER MANY OTHER SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY. THE DAUGHTER OF BERTHA AND WILLIAM SHORT, AGNES WAS RAISED IN THE MARRIED QUARTERS AT NO. 2 FIRE DEPARTMENT. AFTER GRADUATING FROM THE LETHBRIDGE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE SHE STUDIED NURSING IN THE THREE-YEAR PROGRAM AT THE CALGARY GENERAL HOSPITAL. SHE THEN RETURNED IN 1939 TO BECOME SUPERVISOR OF THE GALT HOSPITAL AT $35 A MONTH. IN 1945 AGNES BECAME HEAD OF THE NURSING STAFF OF THE LETHBRIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 51, MOVING THEN TO THE DIRECTOR OF NURSING AT THE LETHBRIDGE HEALTH UNIT. THERE SHE SAW THE FIRST USE OF PENICILLIN IN LETHBRIDGE AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS TO GIVE THE SALK VACCINE FOR POLIO. AGNES RETIRED FROM NURSING IN 1980 AFTER 42 YEARS ON THE JOB. APART FROM HER PROFESSIONAL LIFE, AGNES WAS INVOLVED IN MANY ORGANIZATIONS… AGNES EARNED A WOMAN OF DISTINCTION AWARD FROM THE YWCA AND A GOLD AWARD FROM THE CANADIAN RED CROSS. AT ONE PUBLIC FUNCTION SHE SAID, ‘LETHBRIDGE AND ITS CITIZENS HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL TO ME.’ UNDOUBTEDLY, AFTER A LIFETIME OF DEDICATION TO PUBLIC SERVICE, AGNES RETURNED THE FAVOUR.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE REASON FOR THE DONATION OF HER FAMILY’S ARTIFACTS DURING THE 2018 INTERVIEW, DERRICK EXPLAINED, “I WAS THE EXECUTOR FOR MY AUNT’S WILL AND WHEN SHE PASSED AWAY SHE [WAS LIVING IN] MY GRANDMOTHER AND GRANDFATHER’S HOME. ALL THIS STUFF HAD BEEN LEFT IN THE HOUSE, SO WHEN WE WERE CLEANING IT OUT FOLLOWING HER DEATH, WE CAME ACROSS ALL THESE THINGS. WHILE I KEPT SOME AS MEMENTOS, MY SISTER AND I [DECIDED TO DONATE OTHER ITEMS TO THE MUSEUM].” PLEASE PERMANENT FILE P19950037001, FOR MORE INFORMATION INCLUDING FULL INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION AND COPIES OF ARTICLES REGARDING THE FAMILY HISTORY.

History
THE KONKINS WERE A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY FROM THE TOWN OF SHOULDICE, ALBERTA, NEAR CALGARY. THEY AND MANY OTHER RUSSIAN FAMILIES COMPOSED THAT TOWN’S DOUKHOBOR COLONY. IT WAS THERE WILLIAM KONKIN MARRIED ELIZABETH WISHLOW. IN 1928, THEIR DAUGHTER, ELSIE WAS BORN. THEY LATER MOVED TO A FARM IN VAUXHALL, ALBERTA. THE PRECEDING AND FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM A TWO-PART INTERVIEW WITH DONOR ELSIE MORRIS, WHICH WAS CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON FEBRUARY 17, 2016. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION COMES FROM FAMILY HISTORIES AND TEXTS PROVIDED BY THE DONOR. A FULL HISTORY OF THE KONKIN FAMILY CAN BE FOUND WITH THE RECORD P20160003001. MORRIS’ FATHER SOLD DYE TO LOCALS ON THE DOUKHOBOR COLONY. MORRIS DESCRIBES THE PURPOSE OF THE DYES AND HOW HER FATHER BECAME INVOLVED: “DYEING WAS NECESSARY TO DYE THE WOOL THAT YOU SPUN AND SOMETIMES YOU COULDN’T GET THE NECESSARY DYES IN THE STORE, SO I DON’T KNOW WHERE MY DAD GOT THOSE. THEY MIGHT HAVE SENT HIM SOME OR WHAT AND THEN HE WOULD CHOOSE THE COLOURS THEY WANTED AND HE WOULD ORDER THEM. NOW IT SO HAPPENS THAT THE PEOPLE IN THE COLONY ALL WANTED THESE PARTICULAR DYES BECAUSE THEY WERE BETTER THAN THE KIND THEY GOT IN THE STORE. I DON’T KNOW WHY. SO MY DAD BUILT A SCALE AND I REMEMBER THIS SCALE. IT STOOD ON THE TABLE, IT HAD A CENTRAL PART, THEN THERE WAS A ROD GOING ACROSS AND IT CAME DOWN LIKE THIS AND THREE NAILS ON ONE SIDE BROUGHT IT DOWN AND WHEN YOU WANTED TO SELL THE DYE YOU PUT A PIECE OF PAPER DOWN, PUT IN A SPOONFUL UNTIL WE BALANCED [IT] AND THEN YOU GOT AN EVEN BALANCE AND THAT AMOUNT CAME TO TEN CENTS. IF WANTED LESS THEN YOU PUT TWO NAILS DOWN AND THOSE CAME TO FIVE CENTS SO… I SUPPOSE [HE SOLD THE DYE] BECAUSE HE WANTED TO MAKE SOME MONEY. HE SOLD VEGETABLES IN THE WINTERTIME TO THE LOCALS WHO DIDN’T GROW GARDENS. IN SUMMERTIME IF HE COULD GET A JOB HARVESTING WORKING SOMEWHERE ON FARMS HE DID THAT. [HE WAS] THE MIDDLE MAN [SELLING DYES]… [A]ND NOBODY TOLD ANYONE THE STOREKEEPERS THAT OR HE’D HAVE PROBABLY BEEN TOLD TO STOP IT.” PLEASE SEE THE PERMANENT FILE FOR MORE INFORMATION INCLUDING FULL INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION, OBITUARIES, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND FAMILY HISTORIES.

RETRIEVED FROM BASEMENT OF CASTLE APARTMENTS, FORMERLY CASTLE AND BYNG HOTEL BUILT IN 1909. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING A VIOLIN (P19880028030-GA) REMOVED FROM THE CASTLE APARTMENTS PRIOR TO THE BUILDING'S 1988 RENOVATION. THE FOLLOWING BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CASTLE APARTMENTS WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATON FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY ONLINE ARTICLE ABOUT THE APARTMENTS, AN ARTICLE FROM THE JUNE 10, 1988 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, AND THE 2009 CITY OF LETHBRIDGE HERITAGE INVENTORY. THE CASTLE HOTEL WAS BUILT IN 1909 BY ENTREPRENEUR AND LANDOWNER CHARLES HANSON SR. AT THE CORNER OF 2ND AVENUE AND 2ND STREET SOUTH. THE HOTEL WAS MARKETED TO A HIGH-END CLIENTELE, PROVIDING BUGGY SERVICE TO THE RAILWAY STATION, MAHOGANY AND STAINED GLASS FINISHES, FRESH FLOWERS, AND A DINING ROOM AND BAR. AFTER A NAME CHANGE TO THE BYNG HOTEL IN THE EARLY 1920S, THE BUILDING WAS CONVERTED INTO APARTMENTS IN 1925 IN RESPONSE TO THE ECONOMIC RECESSION AND THE SINGLE VETERANS OF WWI THAT REQUIRED AFFORDABLE LODGING. IN THE 1930S THE BUILDING WAS RENAMED THE CASTLE APARTMENTS, AND RENTED INEXPENSIVELY TO "MEN ONLY - NO WOMEN ALLOWED". THE PROPERTY REMAINED UNDER THE OWNERSHIP OF THE HANSON FAMILY UNTIL 1988, WHEN THE PROPERTY WAS PURCHASED BY LOCAL LANDOWNERS JACK MOLCAK, HONG WONG, AND RON HALL. THEY HIRED ARCHITECT STUART JOHNSTONE TO DESIGN A PLAN THAT WOULD PRESERVE AND ENHANCE THE STRUCTURE'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE. THE APARTMENTS WERE THOROUGHLY RENOVATED AND AN ADJACENT ADDITION WAS ADDED. AT THE TIME OF THIS SURVEY, THE CASTLE APARTMENTS ARE MANAGED AS AFFORDABLE HOUSING BY THE LETHBRIDGE HOUSING AUTHORITY. SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR HARDCOPIES OF SOURCE MATERIALS.
