*UPDATE* IN 2018, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN ARTIFACT SURVEY, WHICH INCLUDED THE BOOTS DONATED BY JOHN DARE IN 1967. RESEARCH CONDUCTED INTO FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE DONOR WAS LARGELY UNSUCCESSFUL. ONE SOURCE WAS FOUND THROUGH THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD DIGITAL ARCHIVES WHICH PICTURES A JOHN DARE AT A MEETING OF THE LETHBRIDGE BRANCH OF THE AMALGAMATED CIVIL SERVANTS ASSOCIATIONS. THE CAPTION READS THAT HE WAS AMONG THOSE PRESENTED WITH A PAST PRESIDENTS' PIN AT THE MEETING (LETHBRIDGE HERALD, 18 JANUARY 1956).

REF: SIMPSON'S CATALOGUE 1926. *UPDATE* IN 2018 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN ARTIFACT SURVEY, WHICH INCLUDED ARTIFACTS AMONG THE ESTHER DOROTHY GROSE DONATION. [NOTE: INITIAL DOCUMENTATION LISTS THE DONOR AS MRS. H. GROSE. ARCHIVAL RESEARCH FOUND THE DONOR’S NAME TO BE ESTHER DOROTHY GROSE, WIFE OF HARRY JAMES GROSE. THE RECORD HAS BEEN AMENDED TO REFLECT THE DONOR’S FULL NAME.] PUNDYK SPOKE WITH THE DONOR’S SON, LEONARD GROSE, ABOUT THE DONATION OVER THE PHONE ON DECEMBER 10, 2018. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION COMES FROM THAT CONVERSATION. GROSE DID NOT HAVE FURTHER INFORMATION TO ADD ABOUT THIS ARTIFACT. HIS MOTHER WAS BORN ESTHER DOROTHY SPONHOLZ IN MEDICINE HAT, ALBERTA. THE FAMILY WOULD LATER SETTLE ON A FARM THREE MILES NORTH OF ELKWATER LAKE, ALBERTA, ACCORDING TO LEONARD GROSE. SHE MET HER HUSBAND, HARRY JAMES GROSE IN CALGARY, WHERE THEY WERE BOTH ATTENDING THE CALGARY PROPHETIC BIBLE INSTITUTE. GROSE ADDED THAT HIS FATHER WAS BORN IN NORTH DAKOTA. THE COUPLE WAS MARRIED IN 1937 AND MOVED TO MEDICINE HAT IN 1938. THE FAMILY STAYED THERE UNTIL 1952. HARRY GROSE WAS IN THE FARM IMPLEMENT BUSINESS, WHICH THEN BROUGHT THE FAMILY TO LETHBRIDGE, WHERE LEONARD WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL. THE HENDERSON’S DIRECTORY FOR LETHBRIDGE IN 1953 LISTS HARRY GROSE AS THE PARTS MANAGER FOR NORRIE & FAWETT LTD. THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARY PUBLISHED FOR ESTHER GROSE ON JANUARY 13, 1996 STATES THAT THE FAMILY RELOCATED TO THE CITY IN 1949. HARRY AND ESTHER STAYED IN THE CITY UNTIL HARRY’S PASSING ON MAY 12, 1990 AT THE AGE OF 78 YEARS. ESTHER THEN RELOCATED TO CALGARY, WHERE SHE PASSED AWAY ON JANUARY 10, 1996 AT THE AGE OF 78 YEARS. REGARDING THE INITIAL DOCUMENTATION OF MANY OF THE ARTIFACTS BEING FOUND FROM THE C.P.R. TRESTLE SITE IN LETHBRIDGE, GROSE EXPLAINED HIS PARENTS ENJOYED TO EXPLORE TOGETHER. HE STATED THEIR WALKS IN THE AREA WOULD HAVE TAKEN PLACE AFTER HE LEFT HOME, BUT HE WAS AWARE THAT HIS FATHER ESPECIALLY LIKED TO GO OUT AND LOOK AT CROPS. HIS MOTHER EXPLORED BECAUSE OF HER INTEREST IN LETHBRIDGE HISTORY. PLEASE SEE PERMANENT FILE P19672916000 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, INCLUDING COPIES OF THE ARCHIVAL REFERENCES USED FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD AND HENDERSON DIRECTORY.

UKRAINIAN CULTURAL ITEM. DONATED TO THE UKRAINIAN ROOM IN THE LETHBRIDGE MUSEUM BY IVAN FRANKS MUSEUM IN WINNIPEG, MANITOBA. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING THREE DONATED BY THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION OF LETHBRIDGE. THOUGH THE ASSOCIATION HAS DISBANDED, SHE WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS OBJECT AND 81 OTHERS DONATED BY THE ASSOCIATION IN 1973 WERE ORIGINALLY PART OF THE GALT MUSEUM'S 'UKRAINIAN ROOM' EXHIBIT. ACCORDING TO LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM 1969 AND 1976, AND PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GALT ARCHIVES (199110764419, 1991107612370, 199110764421, AND 199110764422) THE UKRAINIAN ROOM WAS INSTALLED IN 1966, WHEN THE MUSEUM WAS MOVED FROM THE BOWMAN CENTRE TO THE GALT HOSPITAL BUILDING. THE ROOM WAS FURNISHED WITH OBJECTS DONATED BY THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION, AND THE GROUP HELD ANNUAL TEAS THERE. THOUGH THE CATALOGUE NUMBERS OF THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION DONATION REFLECT A 1973 DONATION DATE, THE INITIAL ACQUISITION YEAR LISTED IN HARDCOPY FILES IS 1966, WHICH ALIGNS WITH THE OPENING DATE OF THE UKRAINIAN ROOM. IN ADDITION, ARCHIVAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ROOM DEPICT OBJECTS THAT ARE NOW HELD IN COLLECTIONS (P19738277001-GA, P19738277002-GA, AND P19738277003-GA CAN BE CLEARLY IDENTIFIED, WITH OTHER OBJECTS IDENTIFIED SPECULATIVELY). IN 1984 THE MUSEUM DISMANTLED ALL ITS DISPLAYS IN PREPARATION FOR THE BUILDING'S RENOVATION AND EXPANSION, AND ACCORDING TO BRAD BROWN, GALT EXHIBIT DESIGNER, WHEN THE FACILITY REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN 1985 ALL THE EXHIBITS HAD BEEN REWORKED, AND THE UKRAINIAN ROOM NO LONGER EXISTED. UNIFORM WORN ONLY FOR SOCIAL FUNCTIONS BY MEMBERS OF THE REGULAR FORCE OFFICE. THIS STYLE OF MESS KIT HAS BEEN THE SAME SINCE THE FORMATION OF THE R.C.A.F. SEE P19740060001-GA FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. ******UPDATE 28 FEBRUARY 2011******* BASED ON LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM 1943 AND 1946 IN ADDITION TO PARSONS’ HERALD-PUBLISHED OBITUARY IN 1992, CLAUDE ROBERT JAMES PARSONS WAS BORN IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1916 AND SERVED WITH THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE (R.C.A.F.) DURING WORLD WAR TWO. THE 1946 ARTICLE STATES THAT HE PURSUED A CAREER AS A CIVILIAN ACCOUNTANT IN LETHBRIDGE AFTER THE WAR, BUT AT SOME POINT HE RE-ENLISTED WITH THE RCAF AND SERVED WITH IT UNTIL HIS WEST COAST SEMI-RETIREMENT IN 1965. DONOR CORRESPONDENCE ON FILE INDICATES THAT PARSONS MADE THE DONATION FROM WHITE ROCK, BC. IN THE LETTERS HE STATES THAT THE UNIFORM HAS “NO DIRECT INVOLVEMENT IN THE HISTORY OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA”. AT THE TIME OF WRITING (30 MAY, 1974), HE ADDITIONALLY STATED THAT HIS UNIFORM WAS “ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD”. PRIOR TO JOINING THE RCAF IN APRIL 1940, CLAUDE PARSONS WAS WITH LETHBRIDGE’S 20TH BATTERY, RCA FROM 1934 TO 1938. HE WAS COMMISSIONED AS AN OFFICER AND SERVED WITH THE 39TH BATTERY. IN 1939 HE RETURNED TO THE 20TH BATTERY IN AN ACTIVE SERVICE, MOBILIZED CAPACITY. THREE YEARS AFTER HE TRANSFERRED TO THE RCAF (1940-1943), HE DEPARTED CANADA AND WAS POSTED TO AN OVERSEAS’ “BASE ACCOUNTS UNIT” IN LONDON. HE REMAINED THERE UNTIL HIS DISCHARGE WITH THE RANK OF FLIGHT LIEUTENANT IN 1945 FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE THE HERALD ARTICLES AND DONOR-SUBMITTED LETTERS, AS REFERENCED ABOVE, IN THE DONATION’S PERMANENT FILE. *UPDATE* DECEMBER 19, 2011 - A DUPLICATE RECORD - P19740060000 WAS DELETED. RECORD CONTAINED A CONGLOMERATE OF INFORMATION FROM P19740060001-8 AND THE DATA WAS IDENTICAL. P19740060000 WAS DELETED IN ORDER TO AVOID CONFUSION.
