USED BY THE ST MARY RIVER IRRIGATION DISTRICT. IN 2008, UNIVERSITY STUDENT AND GALT PROGRAM STAFF MEMBER DYLAN JOHNSON PARTICIPATED IN A UOFL APPLIED STUDIES PROGRAM, CONDUCTING RESEARCH WORK ON ST. MARY’S IRRIGATION DISTRICT (SMRID) OBJECTS DONATED TO THE GALT IN 2001. THE OBJECTS WERE ACQUIRED AS PART OF A GALT IRRIGATION EXHIBIT (STREAMS IN THE DESERT) IN 2000 AND WERE SEVERELY UNDER DOCUMENTED. JOHNSON CONSULTED WITH FORMER AND PRESENT ST. MARY’S IRRIGATION DISTRICT STAFF MEMBERS AS PART OF HIS RESEARCH. THE INFORMATION BELOW IS EXTRACTED FROM INTERVIEW(S) CONDUCTED BY JOHNSON. TO DETERMINE WHICH INTERVIEWS ARE RELEVANT TO THIS ARTIFACT, PLEASE REFER TO THE ARTIFACTS’ PERMANENT FILE (20010036001-11) AND THE RESEARCH PAPER’S REFERENCES. THIS TABLE IS PRESUMED TO HAVE BEEN USED BY SURVEYORS PRIOR TO 1939. THE PLAIN TABLE’S FUNCTION WAS TWO FOLD: FIRST, A TRANSIT (A PRECISION INSTRUMENT HAVING A TELESCOPIC SIGHT FOR ESTABLISHING HORIZONTAL AND SOMETIMES VERTICAL ANGLES) WAS PLACED ON THE SIDE OF BOARD FEATURING A THREADED METAL PLATE AND TWISTED IN. THE MOUNTED TRANSIT WAS USED IN THE FIELD TO VIEW AND RECORD THE LOCATIONS OF CERTAIN GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES (MOST LIKELY TOPOGRAPHY) IN A LANDSCAPE AS WELL AS RUN LEVELS. A SECOND FEATURE OF THE PLAIN TABLE WAS A DRAFTING BOARD WHICH WOULD BE USED IN THE FIELD TO CREATE A TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP OF THE SITES THAT HAD BEEN SHOT WITH THE TRANSIT. THE FOUR LITTLE PINS WERE USED TO HOLD DOWN THE DRAFTING PAPER. THE REASON THE LABEL ON THE FRONT IS CPRDNR ON ACCOUNT THAT IN 1912 THE CPR’S DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TOOK OVER MANAGEMENT OF THE IRRIGATION DISTRICT, OPERATING IT UNTIL 1947. IT IS BELIEVED, THEREFORE, THAT THE PLAIN TABLE ORIGINALLY DATES TO SOMETIME BETWEEN 1912 AND 1947. THE IRRIGATION DISTRICT PERFORMED ITS OWN SURVEYING DURING THIS PERIOD (AND STILL DOES TO THIS DAY). THE BOARD WAS NO LONGER IN USE BY THE TIME DELOYD ELL, INTERVIEWED BY THE GALT IN 2008, COMMENCED HIS WORK WITH THE SMRID IN 1963.

History
DRAWING BOARD WAS USED BY DONOR'S FATHER, REV. G.G. NAKAYAMA, TO WRITE HANDWRITTEN TEXTS FOR NEWSLETTERS HE PUBLISHED FOR THE CHURCH. NAKAYAMA DESIGNED AND PUBLISHED TWO JAPANESE CANADIAN PAPERS, "THE CANADIAN NEWS" AND "CHURCH NEWS". HE BEGAN THE PAPERS AT SLOCAN AND DONOR RELATES THERE WERE HUGE MAILING LISTS TO JAPANESE ALL ACROSS CANADA. REV. NAKAYAMA AND HIS FAMILY MOVED TO COALDALE IN 1945 AFTER BEING RELOCATED FROM VANCOUVER IN 1942 TO SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF B.C. AT COALDALE HE FOUNDED THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION WHERE HE WAS RECTOR FROM 1945 TO 1970. FROM AUGUST 29 TO 31, 2011 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, JOY KOGAWA, ABOUT HER MEMORIES ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC OBJECTS THAT SHE DONATED IN 1997. OF THIS ARTIFACT, KOGAWA SAID: “[MY FATHER] WAS A PUBLISHER AND A WRITER, AND THIS IS THE WAY HE DID IT… HE WAS A BORN COMMUNICATOR… BECAUSE HE WAS A CONNECTOR OF PEOPLE… [IN] SLOCAN, WHEN THERE WERE NO OTHER PUBLICATIONS, WE DID THE CHURCH NEWS. THAT WAS A LOT OF WORK, PRINTING THEM OUT… THEN GETTING ALL THE ADDRESSES, TYPING THEM OUT ON SHEETS OF PAPER… THEN MAKING GLUE OUT OF RICE OR FLOUR AND PASTING THEM ON THE BACK AND LETTING THEM DRY… THEN CUTTING THEM ALL OUT, FOLDING THESE THINGS ALL UP, STAPLING THEM TOGETHER, AND GETTING A SPONGE WITH WATER ON IT AND TAKING ALL THESE DRIED BITS OF ADDRESSES AND STICKING THEM ON THERE… THEN GETTING THE STAMPS, PUTTING THEM ALL ON, THEN BUNDLING THEM ALL UP ACCORDING TO TERRITORY [BECAUSE] PEOPLE WERE SCATTERED ACROSS THE COUNTRY… THEN BINDING THEM ALL UP AND PUTTING THEM ON TIM’S BIKE… THEN GO BACK AND FORTH TO THE POST OFFICE… THIS WAS PART OF OUR WORK, AND OUR LIFE WAS THAT WE DID THIS… [MY FATHER] KEPT UP [PUBLISHING] UNTIL THE END… THE KIND OF PAPER THAT WAS NEEDED FOR THIS MACHINE WAS NO LONGER BEING MADE, SO HE ASKED ME WHETHER MAYBE WE SHOULD BUY A COPYING MACHINE. AND WHAT I WAS THINKING AT THAT TIME WAS THAT DAD SHOULD JUST CONTINUE DOING WHAT HE’S BEEN USED TO DOING, INSTEAD OF ADAPTING TO SOMETHING AT HIS OLD AGE. HE WAS OVER 90 THEN. SO I SAID, ‘LET’S JUST KEEP ON WITH WHAT WE ARE DOING.’ WITHOUT REALIZING THAT HIS REASON FOR ASKING WAS BECAUSE HE NO LONGER COULD GET [THE PAPER].” SEE RECORD P19970041001 FOR EXPANDED BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION AND PERMANENT FILE FOR FURTHER HISTORY.

History
BRUSH WAS USED BY DONOR'S FATHER, REV. G.G. NAKAYAMA, WHO CORRESPONDED REGULARLY WITH PARISHIONERS, MISSIONARIES AND OTHERS AROUND THE WORLD HE HAD MET. HE ALSO PUBLISHED NEWSLETTERS AND NEWSPAPERS FOR THE JAPANESE CANADIAN COMMUNITY. THIS IS ONE OF MANY ITEMS HE POSSESSED TO PERFORM THESE TASKS. THE NAKAYAMA FAMILY WAS ORIGINALLY FROM VANCOUVER BUT MOVED TO COALDALE FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN THEY WERE INTERNED AT SLOCAN CITY IN THE INTERIOR OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. SEE RECORD P19970041001 FOR EXPANDED BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION AND PERMANENT FILE FOR FURTHER HISTORY. THE FOLLOWING MEMORIES WERE PROVIDED BY REVEREND TIM NAKAYAMA IN A LETTER TO THE GALT ON 16 AUGUST, 2007. HE WROTE: “JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY IS A MANUAL ART IN WHICH JAPANESE IDEOGRAPHS ARE EXECUTED BY THE USE OF A “FUDE” BRUSH. THE INK IS PREPARED ON A BLACK RECESSED SMOOTH STONE ON WHICH BLACK “SUMI” (A SPECIAL CHARCOAL SUBSTANCE) IS RUBBED AND MIXED WITH A SMALL QUANTITY OF WATER. THE BRUSH IS DIPPED IN THE PREPARED “SUMI” AND THE IDEOGRAPHS ARE ARTISTICALLY “PAINTED” ON JAPANESE “WASHI” PAPER IF AVAILABLE. IT’S ABSORBENCY TAKES THE BRUSH STROKES THAT ARE BOLDLY MADE IN A GIVEN REGULAR SEQUENCE AND ORDER FOR EACH IDEOGRAPH.”
