The reason why the rail is where it is, is a matter of speculation. The popular account is that the rail fell during construction of the High Level Bridge, and half buried itself in the ground.

The text of the plaque is as follows. "RISING 307 FEET FROM THE VALLEY FLOOR THIS BRIDGE OVER WHICH RUNS THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY THROUGH THE CROWS NEST PASS SPANS THE VALLEY IN ONE MILE AND FORTY SEVEN FEET. COMPLETED IN 1909 IT IS THE LONGEST, HIGHEST BRIDGE OF ITS TYPE IN THE WORLD."

Don Goodes lived in Lethbridge in 1990-1991, working at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Being witness to several demolition projects in the city, he took a series of photographs documenting the process. Many of the resulting prints were combined (taped together) to produce panaramic images of the sites.
