History / Biographical
Anton Oscar (Tony) Aspeslet was born in Shalford, Surrey England on 1 July 1918, and came to Canada with his family as an infant. The family settled in Bruderheim, where Mr. Aspeslet attended elementary and high school. In 1941 Mr. Aspeslet enlisted in the Canadian Army, and served in Canada and England with the South Alberta Regiment. Following World War 2 he continued to serve with the Canadian Militia until 1967. He retired a Lieutenant Colonel, having commanded the Royal Canadian Engineers Regiment and later, the 18th Field Battery R.C.A. In civilian life, Mr. Aspeslet was employed as a dairy inspector with the Alberta Department of Agriculture from 1951 until 1983. He married Iris (nee Newnham) in July 1943. They had one child Douglas. Douglas' children are Launa, Tara, Nicole and Dionne. Mr. Aspeslet served on vestry and as a sidesman at St. Augustine's Anglican Church. He was initiated into Charity Lodge No. 67 (Freemasons) at Lethbridge in 1958, and became its Worshipful Master in 1964 and again in 1970. From 1970 to 1971 Mr. Aspeslet was Deputy Grand Master of District No. 7, now the Chinookarch District. He was installed as Grand Master of Masons in Alberta in June 1976, and helped found the Fiat Lux Lodge of Research No. 1980. Mr. Aspeslet was the first Worshipful Master of Fiat Lux Lodge of Research No. 1980, from 1979 to 1981. Mr. Aspeslet maintained a lifelong interest and support of the Freemasons, serving in other capacities in addition to those mentioned above. Tony Aspeslet died on 5 May 2007 at age 88. A memorial service was held at St. Augustine's Anglican Church in Lethbridge on 14 May 2007. Mr. Aspeslet is buried in Mountain View Cemetery.

Meetings to support a library establishment in Lethbridge began in 1910, and a by 1911 a by-law was passed for a provision of a library that would be known as the Lethbridge Public Library. In 1919, the first library board was appointed with W.J. Nelson (Chair), H.W. Meech, and Rev. C.E. Cragg. The first librarians were also introduced that year, which included A.N. Filmer, L. McIndoe, and Arthur Frayne. At that time, a library service was opened in two rooms of the YMCA. The Lethbridge Public Library building was officially opened on January 23, 1922 (building is currently occupied by the Southern Alberta Art Gallery). The new facility, downtown branch, opened in 1974. In 2013, the Crossings Branch was opened on the west side of Lethbridge.
