History / Biographical
Lieutenant Abner Gladstone Virtue (14 November 1891 - 4 August 1960) was born in Beachburg, Ontario the sixth of eight children. He moved to Lethbridge in 1901 with his parents William and Annie where he completed high school in 1908 at Central School. That year he started his law career in Lethbridge at the office of Simmions and Sheperd as a clerk. He went on to study law at Osgoode Hall in Toronto, completing his studies at the University of Alberta in 1913, earning his L.L.B. He received the gold medal placing first among 33 candidates who wrote the examination that year. After he was admitted to the bar that November, Virtue became the first person who had graduated from a Lethbridge high school to go on to university and qualify as a barrister. He practiced law until autumn 1915, when he entered the Royal School of Artillery at Kingston, Ontario earning a commission as Lieutenant. He was assigned to Lethbridge's Sixty-First Overseas Battery, Canadian Field Artillery in May, 1916. His battery spent time training in Ontario and England before it was sent to France in 1917. There Lt. Virtue served for 16 months and was awarded the Military Cross for his service in the battle of Burlon Woods. In 1919 virtue resumed his law career in Lethbridge and married Sara Edythe Torrance in June 1919. The had two daughters, Joan and Edythe. Sara passed away in 1922 and Virtue married Marian Fraser Ells (1901 -1981), a teacher at the Lethbridge Conservatory of Music, in November, 1925. They had two children, Charles (1926 - 1998) and Carol (1935 - ). In 1930 Virtue built a $15,000 house at 2905 Parkside Drive (extant 2012), a very large house and one of the finest original house in the Henderson lake district. In 1935 he was named King's Council and that year he was also named as a candidate for the new federal Reconstruction Party, but was not elected. In 1947 he was elected to city council where he was the first person in 60 years to win a seat on council as an Independent. He served for six years. As chairman of the hospital board in 1953, he turned the sod for the construction of Lethbridge Regional Hospital and served on its board until his death. He was member, then chairman of the Lethbridge Public school board as well as a long-time supporter of the YMCA, serving on a number of their committees. He was superintendent of he First Baptist Church Sunday School for over 20 years and vice-president of the Alberta Baptist conference. At the time of his death in 1960 he was the head and senior partner of the law firm Virtue, Russell, Morgan and Virtue.
