History / Biographical
Frederick Stanley Pease was born in Breckenridge, Missouri in 1870. He married Anna Muetzel in 1894 and moved to the Milk River area in 1910 to establish a farm. He served as mayor of the village, councillor, school board trustee, and president of the Board of Trade. One of his ongoing interests was socialism, and, in particular, the single tax system enunciated by Henry George, which Pease persuaded The Village of Milk River to use from 1912-1949. He was acclaimed as the "World Mustard King" in 1950 because his 1700 acres of commercial mustard were said to be the largest contract in North America. He died in 1951.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of Pease's correspondence regarding the single tax system with individuals in Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, including the Manhattan Single Tax Club; reports and briefs to the Alberta government; addresses and essays by Pease on the single tax system; newspaper clippings; and course materials from the Henry George School of Social Science. Includes research material about the George taxation system acquired by Pease's family after his death.
