History / Biographical
Stan Siwak was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1917. He began competitive swimming at the age of 12 and was a member of Poland's national team at the 1936 Olympics. He attended the School of Architecture at Warsaw Polytechnic until it was closed by the German occupational authority in 1939. From 1940 to 1945, he was confined in the Sachsehousen Concentration Camp. He emigrated to Canada in 1948, arriving in Lethbridge in 1950 to work for the federal government as an engineer. He formed the Lethbridge Amateur Swim Club and served as its coach for 25 years. He also coached the Alberta swim team, and the Canadian swim team which toured New Zealand in 1971. He was a swimming judge at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, the 1967 Pan-American Games, and the 1970 European Swimming Championship. He also served on the Age Group Committee of the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur. He died in Lethbridge in 1985.
