History / Biographical
W.H. Fairfield was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1875. The family moved to Colorado, where he attended the State Agricultural College. He received his BSc in 1894 and, from 1895- 1901, he was assistant professor of agriculture at the University of Wyoming. In 1901, he and his brother moved to Lethbridge to establish a farm. His success led to his appointment as the first superintendent of the Lethbridge Experimental Farm in 1905. He received an honourary degree from the University of Alberta in 1930 and was appointed an officer of The OBE in 1943. He died in 1961, six years after his wife Ida. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Alice.

Fairfield; correspondence, family tree, diary of trip to 1936 Olympics, and newspaper clippings, of Elizabeth Fairfield; and photographs. Includes photographs of W.H. Fairfield as a child, photographs of his wife and children, images of family and friends, scenes of the Lethbridge Experimental Farm and local scenery, and albums of views from Wyoming and Southern Alberta as well as Elizabeth Fairfield's albums of travel, family and friends.
