HANDMADE BAG MADE OF 3 SECTIONS OF STRIPS OF ABOUT 5 INCHES (APPROX. 13 CM) EACH. IT IS RED WITH BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN, AND RAW MATERIAL ACCENTS. THE TRIM AT THE TOP OF THE BAG IS BLUE WITH A HANDLE OF THE SAME FABRIC ON EITHER SIDE. THERE IS A STRIP OF RAW, NOT PATTERNED FABRIC AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG. BOTH SIDES OF THE BAG HAVE THE SAME ARRANGEMENT OF PATTERNED STRIPS. THERE IS ONE SEAM CONNECTING THE FRONT AND THE BACK OF THE BAG ON BOTH SIDES. THE INSIDE IS UNLINED. GOOD TO VERY GOOD CONDITION. THERE IS SOME STITCHING COMING LOOSE AT VARIOUS POINTS OF THE PATTERNING.

THE KONKINS WERE A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY FROM THE TOWN OF SHOULDICE, ALBERTA, NEAR CALGARY. THEY AND MANY OTHER RUSSIAN FAMILIES COMPOSED THAT TOWN’S DOUKHOBOR COLONY. IT WAS THERE WILLIAM KONKIN MARRIED ELIZABETH WISHLOW. IN 1928 THEIR DAUGHTER, ELSIE WAS BORN. THEY LATER MOVED TO A FARM IN VAUXHALL, ALBERTA. THE PRECEDING AND FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM A TWO-PART INTERVIEW WITH DONOR ELSIE MORRIS, WHICH WAS CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON FEBRUARY 17, 2016. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION COMES FROM FAMILY HISTORIES AND TEXTS PROVIDED BY THE DONOR. A FULL HISTORY OF THE KONKIN FAMILY CAN BE FOUND WITH THE RECORD P20160003001. A STATEMENT WRITTEN BY MORRIS ATTACHED TO THE BAG STATES THAT THE MATERIAL OF THE BAG ORIGINATES FROM THE 1870S. THE STATEMENT READS: “THIS BAG WAS HAND WOVEN IN STRIPS [THAT WERE USED] TO SEW ON THE BOTTOM OF PETTICOATS. THE GIRLS AT THAT TIME HAD TO HAVE A TROUSEUA [SIC] TO LAST A LIFETIME BECAUSE AFTER MARRIAGE THERE WOULD BE NO TIME TO MAKE CLOTHES SO WHAT THEY MADE WAS STURDY. THEY STARTED ON THEIR TROUSEUS [SIC] AS SOON AS THEY COULD HOLD A NEEDLE. WHEN IT WAS HAYING TIME THE GIRLS WENT OUT INTO THE FIELD TO RAKE THE HAY. THEY WORE PETTICOATS OF LINEN TO WHICH THESE BANDS WERE SEWN. THE LONG SKIRTS WERE PICKED UP AT THE SIDES AND TUCKED INTO THE WAISTBANDS SO THAT THE BOTTOMS OF THE PETTICOATS WERE ON DISPLAY.” “THESE BANDS WERE ORIGINALLY MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER’S WHO CAME OUT OF RUSSIA WITH THE DOUKHOBOR SETTLEMENT IN 1899. THEY WERE PASSED ON TO MY MOTHER, ELIZABETH KONKIN, WHO MADE THEM INTO A BAG IN THE 1940S” THE STRIPS THAT MAKE UP THE BAG SERVED A UTILITARIAN PURPOSE WHEN SEWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PETTICOATS. IN THE INTERVIEW, MORRIS EXPLAINS: “… THESE STRIPS ARE VERY STRONG. THEY’RE LIKE CANVAS. THEY WERE SEWN ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE LADY’S PETTICOATS AND THEY WORE A SKIRT ON TOP OF THE PETTICOATS. THESE STRIPS LASTED A LIFETIME, IN FACT MORE THAN ONE LIFETIME BECAUSE I’VE GOT THEM NOW. THEY WOULD TUCK THE SKIRTS INTO THEIR WAISTBAND ON THE SIDE SO THEIR PETTICOATS SHOWED AND THEY WERE TRYING TO PRESERVE THEIR SKIRTS NOT TO GET CAUGHT IN THE GRAIN. THE GIRLS LIKED TO WEAR THEM TO SHOW OFF BECAUSE THE BOYS WERE THERE AND THEY ALWAYS WORE THEIR VERY BEST SUNDAY CLOTHES WHEN THEY WENT CUTTING WHEAT OR GRAIN." “[THE FABRIC] CAME FROM RUSSIA. WITH THE AREA WHERE THEY CAME FROM IS NOW GEORGIA AND THEY LIVED ABOUT SEVEN MILES NORTH OF THE TURKISH BORDER, THE PRESENT DAY TURKISH BORDER… [THE DOUKHOBORS] CAME TO CANADA IN 1897 AND 1899.” MORRIS EXPLAINS THAT SURPLUS FABRIC WOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO CANADA FROM RUSSIA BY HER MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER FOR FUTURE USE AND TO AID THE GIRLS IN MAKING THEIR TROUSSEAUS: “THE TROUSSEAU THE GIRLS MADE HAD TO LAST THEM A LIFETIME BECAUSE THEY WOULDN’T HAVE TIME BUT RAISING CHILDREN TO SEWING THINGS. SEWING MACHINES WERE UNKNOWN THEN.” THE BANDS OF FABRIC THAT MAKE UP THE BAG WOULD HAVE BEEN REMAINS NEVER USED FROM ELIZABETH KONKIN’S TROUSSEAU. SHE HAND WOVE THE BAG WHILE SHE WAS LIVING IN SHOULDICE. THE BAG WAS USED BY MORRIS’ MOTHER TO STORE HER KNITTING SUPPLIES. WHEN MORRIS ACQUIRED THE BAG IN THE 1990S, IT MAINTAINED A SIMILAR PURPOSE: “WELL I USED TO CARRY MY STUFF FOR THE WEAVER’S GUILD BUT NOW I DON’T USE IT FOR ANYTHING. IT’S VERY HANDY YOU KNOW IT DOESN’T WEAR OUT.” THERE WAS ONLY ONE BAG MADE OUT OF THESE REMNANTS BY MORRIS’ MOTHER. HAND-WOVEN BLANKET MADE FROM RAW FLAX. THE BLANKET IS COMPOSED OF 2 SECTIONS OF THE SAME SIZE OF MATERIAL THAT ARE JOINED TOGETHER WITH A SEAM AT THE CENTER. ON THE FRONT SIDE (WITH NEAT SIDE OF THE STITCHING AND PATCHES), THERE ARE THREE PATCHES ON THE BLANKET MADE FROM LIGHTER, RAW-COLOURED MATERIAL. ONE SECTION OF THE FABRIC HAS TWO OF THE PATCHES ALIGNED VERTICALLY NEAR THE CENTER SEAM. THE AREA SHOWING ON ONE PATCH IS 3 CM X 5 CM AND THE OTHER IS SHOWING 5 CM X 6 CM. ON THE OPPOSITE SECTION THERE IS ONE PATCH THAT IS 16 CM X 8.5 CM SEWN AT THE EDGE OF THE BLANKET. THE BLANKET IS HEMMED ON BOTH SHORT SIDES. ON THE OPPOSING/BACK SIDE OF THE BLANKET, THE FULL PIECES OF THE FABRIC FOR THE PATCHES ARE SHOWING. THE SMALLER PATCH OF THE TWO ON THE ONE HALF-SECTION OF THE BLANKET IS 8CM X 10 CM AND THE OTHER PATCH ON THAT SIDE IS 14CM X 15CM. THE PATCH ON THE OTHER HALF-SECTION IS THE SAME SIZE AS WHEN VIEWED FROM THE FRONT. THERE IS A SEVERELY FADED BLUE STAMP ON THIS PATCH’S FABRIC. FAIR CONDITION. THERE IS RED STAINING THAT CAN BE SEEN FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE BLANKET AT THE CENTER SEAM, NEAR THE EDGE OF THE BLANKET AT THE SIDE WITH 2 PATCHES (CLOSER TO THE LARGER PATCH), AND NEAR THE SMALL PATCH AT THE END FURTHER FROM THE CENTER. THERE IS A HOLE WITH MANY LOOSE THREADS SURROUNDING NEAR THE CENTER OF THE HALF SECTION WITH ONE PATCH. THERE ARE VARIOUS THREADS COMING LOOSE AT MULTIPLE POINTS OF THE BLANKET.

MORRIS SAYS HER MEMORY OF THE BLANKET DATES AS FAR BACK AS SHE CAN REMEMBER: “RIGHT INTO THE ‘30S, ‘40S AND ‘50S BECAUSE MY MOTHER DID THAT RIGHT UP UNTIL NEAR THE END. I USE THAT EVEN IN LETHBRIDGE WHEN I HAD A GARDEN. [THIS TYPE OF BLANKET] WAS USED FOR TWO PURPOSES. IT WAS EITHER PUT ON THE BED UNDERNEATH THE MATTRESS THE LADIES MADE OUT OF WOOL AND OR ELSE IT WAS USED, A DIFFERENT PIECE OF CLOTH WOULD BE USED FOR FLAILING THINGS. [THE] FLAIL ACTUALLY GOES WITH IT AND THEY BANG ON THE SEEDS AND IT WOULD TAKE THE HULLS OFF… IT’S HAND WOVEN AND IT’S MADE OUT OF POOR QUALITY FLAX… IT’S UNBLEACHED, DEFINITELY… RAW LINEN." THIS SPECIFIC BLANKET WAS USED FOR SEEDS MORRIS RECALLS: “…IT HAD TO BE A WINDY DAY… WE WOULD PICK DRIED PEAS OR BEANS OR WHATEVER BEET SEEDS AND WE WOULD BEAT AWAY AND THEN WE WOULD STAND UP, HOLD IT UP AND THE BREEZE WOULD BLOW THE HULLS OFF AND THE SEEDS WOULD GO STRAIGHT DOWN [ONTO THE BLANKET.” THE SEEDS WOULD THEN BE CARRIED ON THE BLANKET AND THEN PUT INTO A PAIL. OF THE BLANKET’S CLEAN STATE, MORRIS EXPLAINS, “THEY’RE ALWAYS WASHED AFTER THEY’RE FINISHED USING THEM.” WHEN SHE LOOKS AT THIS ARTIFACT, MORRIS SAYS: “I FEEL LIKE I’M OUT ON THE FARM, I SEE FIELDS AND FIELDS OF FLAX, BLUE FLAX. BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT SHE USED IT FOR. SHE DID USE IT IF SHE WANTED A LITTLE BIT OF THE FLAX THEN SHE’D POUND THE FLAX, BUT THAT WASN’T OFTEN. IT WAS MOSTLY BEANS AND PEAS.” IT IS UNKNOWN WHO WOVE THIS BLANKET. ONE LEG HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY BLEACHED AND BLOOMERS HAVE NUMEROUS WORN SPOTS AND HOLES THROUGHOUT. 2. SKIRT. NAVY BLUE WITH WHITE TRIM. GO WITH ABOVE BLOOMERS. WAISTBAND HAS 5 BUTTONHOLES AROUND IT. BACK OF SKIRT HAS AN OPENING WITN NO CLOSURE. BACK OF SKIRT HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY BLEACHED. ALSO HAS NUMEROUS WORN SPOTS AND HOLES.

EVDOKIMOFF DIED IN 1986 AT THE AGE OF 84 YEARS OLD. *UPDATE* NICOLE HEMBROFF, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT, MET WITH DONOR WALLY EVDOKIMOFF IN 2010 TO DISCUSS HIS DONATION OF THE TRUNK AND ITS CONTENTS. THE DONOR'S FATHER, REV. CANON G.G. NAKAYAMA, WAS AN ANGLICAN MINISTER IN VANCOUVER, AND THEN ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION IN COALDALE IN 1945 WHERE HE SERVED UNTIL 1970. FROM AUGUST 29 TO 31, 2011 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE DONOR, JOY KOGAWA, ABOUT HER MEMORIES ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC OBJECTS THAT SHE DONATED IN 1997. IN 1918, THEY LIVED IN BURDETT AND THEN IN TABER IN 1921. ACCORDING TO HIS OBITUARY, “HE WAS ACTIVE IN THE ALBERTA FISH AND GAME ASSOCIATION FOR MANY YEARS AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE MASONIC LODGE, THE MOOSE LODGE, THE CANADIAN LEGION, AND THE ELKS. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS. ESTELLA AGNES MACDONALD (NEE CHALMERS) WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ONTARIO. ESTELLA PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 84 ON MAY 11, 1981. LEA HIRAM MACDONALD WAS BORN IN LOWBANKS, ON ON MARCH 11, 1928 AND GREW UP ON THE FAMILY FARM IN TABER. ON CENTER BACK THERE IS A GAP IN LACE WITHIN WHICH ARE FOUR HORIZONTAL STRIPS OF BROWN AND PINK MATERIAL. UNDERNEATH BEIGE LACE IS A ROW OF SMALL PINK AND GREEN EMBROIDERED FLOWERS. THERE ARE TWO PINK STRAPS AT TOP OF CORSET; THEY ARE ATTACHED TO BACK AND BUTTON IN FRONT. A WHITE TAG ON INSIDE BOTTOM OF CORSET WITH PURPLE EMBROIDERY, READS "SHEATHALO REGD 32 BUST MADE IN ENGLAND". A SMALLER TAG NEXT TO THIS ONE READS "TO REPEAT PLEASE QUOTE NO P. F". BUTTONED TO BOTTOM OF CORSET ARE FOUR, ADJUSTABLE, PINK STRAPS (GARTERS). THE FREE END OF EACH STRAP HAS A METAL HOOK AND OFF-WHITE BUTTON FOR ATTACHING STOCKINGS.

THE TRADITIONAL SLOVAKIAN COSTUME BELONGED TO MRS. KATHERINA (KATIE) BRECKA (NEE KADLICEK) (1908-1997), AN IMMIGRANT TO THE PICTURE BUTTE AREA. BORN IN ROVENSKO, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, MRS. BRECKA IMMIGRATED TO CANADA WITH HER HUSBAND AND TWO YOUNG SONS IN 1938. LIMITED BY THE NUMBER OF PERSONAL BELONGINGS SHE COULD BRING TO CANADA, BRECKA BROUGHT THIS DRESS BECAUSE IT REPRESENTED HER BEST SET OF CLOTHING AND WAS AN IMPORTANT REMINDER OF HER HOME. SHE SET THE CLOTHING ASIDE FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS SUCH AS WEDDINGS, FESTIVALS, DANCES AND FOR CHURCH. UNAWARE THAT THIS WAS NOT COMMON FASHION IN CANADA SHE IS QUOTED SAYING “I NEVER THINKING DRESSES DIFFERENT HERE IN THIS COUNTRY, NOW I GO TO EATON’S”. DRESS WAS ALSO WORN BY VIOLIN PLAYER, CAROLYN KLAUSE, DURING A RECITAL IN WETASKIWIN, AB. THE DONOR REQUESTED THE COSTUME FROM MRS. BRECKA ON BEHALF OF THE VIOLINIST. KLAUSE PLAYED A CZARDAS, A NATIVE DANCE FROM MRS. BRECKA'S HOME LAND. AFTER THE LONG JOURNEY FROM SLOVAKIA TO CANADA, THE BRECKA FAMILY HAD A SHORT ONE MONTH STAY IN IRON SPRINGS WHERE THEY WORKED IN SUGAR BEET FIELDS. AFTER THAT, THEY MOVED TO THE FARM THAT THEY PURCHASED FROM JOHN SCHUMAKR IN PICTURE BUTTE. KATIE BRECKA SURVIVED HER HUSBAND JOHN BRECKA (WHO DIED IN 1960), LIVING IN PICTURE BUTTE UNTIL HER DEATH (JUNE 6, 1997) AT THE AGE OF 88. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF BOXED TEXTILE ARTIFACTS, INCLUDING THIS TRADITIONAL SLOVAKIAN COSTUME. THE PERMANENT FILE INDICATES THAT KATIE WAS BORN ON NOVEMBER 23, 1908. HER AND JOHN BRECKA'S SONS WERE NAMED VLADIMIR AND DRAHOTIN (STAN). IN 1942, AFTER THE FAMILY WAS SETTLED IN CANADA, THEY HAD A DAUGHTER NAMED YARMILA (GERALDINE). THE DONOR, CATHRYN BRECKA IS THE WIFE OF VLADIMIR. THE DATE OF THE VIOLIN RECITAL IN WETASKIWIN WAS MARCH 1978. THERE IS A NOTE IN THE PERMANENT FILE THAT STATES THAT THE COSTUME IS PRESUMED TO BE MADE BY FAMILY. COSTUMES WERE WORN BY THE YOUNGEST MEMBERS OF THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE LOCATED IN RAYMOND, ALBERTA. FOR AT LEAST FIFTY YEARS, CHILDREN DRESSED UP IN THE ELABORATE GARMENTS AS PART OF RELIGION’S ‘CHIGO’ OR YOUNG-CHILDREN CEREMONY. THE PROCESSIONAL EVENT REQUIRED THAT THE CHILDREN DRESS AS HEAVENLY BEINGS. BOYS WORE A STIFF HAT OF LACQUERED GAUZE CALLED AN ‘EBOSHI’ WHILE GIRLS WORE THE CROWN OF THE PHOENIX BIRD KNOWN AS A ‘TENKAN’. THE CEREMONY WAS CONDUCTED AT THE RAYMOND BUDDHIST TEMPLE EVERY FIVE YEARS, COMMENCING ON THE DATE OF THE TEMPLE’S DEDICATION (1929) AND ENDING ON ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN 1979. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE PAPER LOTUS FLOWERS WERE MADE LOCALLY AND THE GARMENTS WERE IMPORTED FROM JAPAN. FOR ALMOST EIGHTY YEARS, THE TEMPLE SERVED THE SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF MANY AMONG SOUTHERN ALBERTA’S JAPANESE COMMUNITY. IT ACTED AS A CENTRE FOR TRADITIONAL BUDDHIST TEACHING AND JAPANESE CULTURE UNTIL ITS CLOSING IN 2006. THESE COSTUMES, IN ADDITION TO OTHER SPIRITUAL OBJECTS INCLUDING THE TEMPLE’S SHRINE, WERE DONATED TO THE GALT AS PART OF THE TEMPLE’S CLOSING AND EVENTUAL SALE. CEREMONY WHERE THIS COSTUME WAS LAST WORN WAS PERFORMED FOR THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE'S FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN 1979. PERFORMED FOR THE TEMPLE'S INAUGURATION, 10TH, 20TH, 25, 30, 35, 40...ETC EVERY 5TH YEAR. DONOR HAS PHOTOS OF COSTUMES BEING WORN DURING THE ANNIVERSARIES (SEE PERMANENT FILE). DONOR PRESUMES THAT THE MATERIAL DATES TO 1929 TO 1930. ON APRIL 26, 2009 THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, LOCATED IN LETHBRIDGE, WAS THE SITE OF AN O-CHIGO CHILDREN’S PARADE, HELD AS PART OF THE TEMPLE’S DEDICATION CEREMONY. VISUAL DOCUMENTATION OF O-CHIGO COSTUMES, REPRESENTING THE ONE DONATED, CAN BE FOUND IN THE GALT’S ARCHIVES, RELATED TO THE 2009 DEDICATION EVENT. ADDITIONALLY, O-CHIGO RELATED PHOTOS CAN BE FOUND RELATED TO THE HISTORY OF THE TABER BUDDHIST CHURCH IN THE GALT’S ARCHIVES. A: HANDMADE DOLL. THE “ESKIMO” DOLL IS MADE WITH LIGHT BLUE, FELT-LIKE FABRIC WITH WHITE FABRIC ACCENTS. THE FACE IS MADE OUT OF A LIGHTER FABRIC THAT IS PEACH-COLOURED. THE FACIAL DETAILS ARE HAND PAINTED. THE DOLL HAS BLUE EYES, EYEBROWS, NOSTRILS, RED LIPS, AND ROSY CHEEKS. THE LIGHT BLUE FABRIC THAT MAKES UP THE MAJORITY OF THE DOLL’S BODY IS ENCOMPASSING THE DOLL’S FACE LIKE A HOOD. THE DOLL’S TORSO IS COVERED IN THE LIGHT BLUE FELT. ALL FABRIC IS WELL-WORN AND THREADBARE IN MULTIPLE PLACES. THE DOLL’S RED STUFFING IS VISIBLE THROUGH PARTS OF THE FABRIC. THERE IS DISCOLORATION (YELLOWING) OVERALL. THE STUFFING IS NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE DOLL. THE SEAMS AT THE ARMS ARE FRAGILE. THE PAINT FOR THE DOLL’S FACE IS SEVERELY FADED.

THE KONKINS WERE A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY FROM THE TOWN OF SHOULDICE, ALBERTA, NEAR CALGARY. THEY AND MANY OTHER RUSSIAN FAMILIES COMPOSED THAT TOWN’S DOUKHOBOR COLONY. IT WAS THERE WILLIAM KONKIN MARRIED ELIZABETH WISHLOW. IN 1928 THEIR DAUGHTER, ELSIE WAS BORN. THE FAMILY LATER MOVED TO A FARM IN VAUXHALL, ALBERTA. THE PRECEDING AND FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM A TWO-PART INTERVIEW WITH DONOR ELSIE MORRIS, WHICH WAS CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON FEBRUARY 17, 2016. AT THE AGE OF 14 SHE WAS SENT TO LETHBRIDGE TO LIVE WITH HER GRANDMOTHER SO THAT SHE COULD ATTEND LETHBRIDGE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE. ON NOVEMBER 17, 1945 GLADYS WAS MARRIED TO DONALD “DON” CLAY. GLADYS WAS THE DAUGHTER OF OSCAR WILLETS AND ALICE LUCY EMILY WILLETS (NEE ARNOLD). GLADYS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 93 ON FEBRUARY 14, 2014. HER HUSBAND DON CLAY PASSED AWAY ON NOVEMBER 8, 2008 AT THE AGE OF 93. OSCAR WILLETS WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ENGLAND, MOVING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910. IN 1915 HE JOINED THE 39TH BATTALION AND SERVED OVERSEAS DURING WWI. HE WORKED AS A MINER AT NO. 6 MINE FOLLOWING THE WAR, THEN AS A FARMER IN THE SUNNYSIDE DISTRICT STARTING IN 1926. HE RETIRED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1954. OSCAR PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 83 ON MARCH 22, 1975. ALICE LUCY EMILY WILLETS (NEE ARNOLD) WAS BORN AND RAISED IN LONDON, ENGLAND, AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910. ALICE WAS MARRIED TO OSCAR WILLETS ON SEPTEMBER 30, 1919. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ALBERT ARNOLD AND ALICE MATILDA ARNOLD (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN). ALICE WILLETS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 85 ON AUGUST 26, 1982. ALICE MATILDA ARNOLD (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN) WAS BORN IN HAVERSHAM, KENT, ENGLAND AND MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1910. SHE PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 82 IN AUGUST 1957. ALBERT ARNOLD PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 50. AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE HERALD ON JULY 31, 1924 RECOUNTS THE ACCIDENT THAT CAUSED HIS DEATH: “THE DEATH OF ALBERT ARNOLD … AN EMPLOYEE OF THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, OCCURRED LAST NIGHT AT 9:45 AT THE GALT HOSPITAL. MR. ARNOLD WAS ENGAGED IN TRIMMING TREES IN FRONT OF 649 12TH ST., WHEN HE FELL FROM THE LADDER ON WHICH HE WAS WORKING AND STRUCK THE SIDEWALK WITH HIS HEAD, BEING RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS, FROM WHICH STATE HE NEVER EMERGED. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE GALT HOSPITAL WHERE AN EXAMINATION REVEALED A SLIGHT FRACTURE OF THE SKULL. HE WAS OPERATED ON IN THE AFTERNOON IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF HIS BRAIN CAUSED BY THE FRACTURE, BUT WITHOUT SUCCESS, AND HE DIED AT 9:45PM. MR. ARNOLD, WHO WAS FIFTY YEARS OF AGE, HAD BEEN IN THE CITY THIRTEEN YEARS AND HAD BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT ON AND OFF FOR SEVERAL YEARS. ONLY THE DAY BEFORE HE HAD CELEBRATED THE THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS MARRIAGE.” ANOTHER ARTICLE FROM AUGUST 1, 1924 DISCUSSES THE ACCIDENT FURTHER: “AT AN ENQUIRY HELD ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON BEFORE MAGISTRATE BARKER AS TO WHETHER AN INQUEST ON THE DEATH OF ALBERT ARNOLD WOULD BE NECESSARY, THE MAGISTRATE DECIDED THAT IT WAS A CASE OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH. ACCORDING TO THE EVIDENCE GIVEN, DECEASED ON HAD A 13 FOOT FALL FROM THE POINT OF THE LADDER ON WHICH HE WAS STANDING AT THE TIME HE WAS CUTTING TREES ON TWELFTH ST. SOUTH. GEORGE EDWARDS, WHO WAS HOLDING THE LADDER FOR THE DECEASED, DEPOSED TO HIS HAVING A STRONG GRIP ON IT AND TO ITS NOT SLIPPING. THE DECEASED WAS PRUNING OFF THE LIGHT BRANCHES WITH A PRUNING HOOK AND WAS NOT USING A SAW. ANYTHING OF THE THEORY OF HIS BEING ELECTROCUTED BY THE ELECTRIC WIRES WAS DISSIPATED BY THE EVIDENCE OF ED THEOBALD OF THE CITY ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT, WHO SAID THAT THE WIRE WAS AWAY ABOVE THE TOP OF THE TREE. IT IS PRESUMED THAT DECEASED, WHO HAD NOT BEEN VERY WELL LATELY, HAD A SUDDEN FIT OF VERTIGO. WOODEN FLAIL. ONE END HAS A PADDLE WITH A WIDTH THAT TAPERS FROM 12 CM AT THE TOP TO 10 CM AT THE BASE. THE PADDLE IS WELL WORN IN THE CENTER WITH A HEIGHT OF 4 CM AT THE ENDS AND 2 CM IN THE CENTER. HANDLE IS ATTACHED TO THE PADDLE AND IS 16 CM LONG WITH A CIRCULAR SHAPE AT THE END OF THE HANDLE. ENGRAVED ON THE CIRCLE THE INITIALS OF DONOR’S MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER, ELIZABETH EVANAVNA WISHLOW, “ . . .” GOOD CONDITION. BELONGED TO ELIZABETH EVANAVNA WISHLOW, THEN HANDED TO HER DAUGHTER ELIZABETH PETROVNA KONKIN WHO PASSED IT ON TO HER DAUGHTER ELIZABETH W. MORRIS.” ALTERNATELY, IN THE INTERVIEW, MORRIS REMEMBERED HER GRANDMOTHER’S, “… NAME WAS JUSOULNA AND THE MIDDLE INITIAL IS THE DAUGHTER OF YVONNE. YVONNE WAS HER FATHER’S NAME AND WISHLOW WAS HER LAST NAME.” THE FLAIL AND THE BLANKET, ALSO DONATED BY MORRIS, WERE USED TOGETHER AT HARVEST TIME TO EXTRACT AND COLLECT SEEDS FROM GARDEN CROPS. ELSIE RECALLED THAT ON WINDY DAYS, “WE WOULD PICK DRIED PEAS OR BEANS, OR WHATEVER, AND WE WOULD [LAY THEM OUT ON THE BLANKET], BEAT AWAY AND THEN HOLD [THE BLANKET] UP, AND THE BREEZE WOULD BLOW THE HULLS OFF AND THE SEEDS WOULD GO STRAIGHT DOWN.” THE FLAIL CONTINUED TO BE USED BY ELIZABETH “RIGHT UP TO THE END,” POSSIBLY INTO THE 1990S, AND THEREAFTER BY MORRIS. WHEN ASKED WHY SHE STOPPED USING IT HERSELF, MORRIS SAID, “I DON’T GARDEN ANYMORE. FURTHERMORE, PEAS ARE SO INEXPENSIVE THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO GO TO ALL THAT WORK... I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HARVEST THEIR SEEDS. I THINK WE JUST GO AND BUY THEM IN PACKETS NOW.” THE KONKINS WERE A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY FROM THE TOWN OF SHOULDICE, ALBERTA, NEAR CALGARY. THEY AND MANY OTHER RUSSIAN FAMILIES COMPOSED THAT TOWN’S DOUKHOBOR COLONY. DOUKHOBOURS CAME TO CANADA IN FINAL YEARS OF THE 19TH CENTURY TO ESCAPE RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN RUSSIA. ELIZABETH KONKIN (NEE WISHLOW) WAS BORN IN CANORA, SK ON JANUARY 22, 1907 TO HER PARENTS, PETER AND ELIZABETH WISHLOW. AT THE AGE OF 6 SHE MOVED WITH HER FAMILY TO A DOUKHOBOR SETTLEMENT AT BRILLIANT, BC, AND THEY LATER MOVED TO THE DOUKHOBOR SETTLEMENT AT SHOULDICE. IT WAS HERE THAT SHE MET AND MARRIED WILLIAM KONKIN. THEIR DAUGHTER, ELSIE MORRIS (NÉE KONKIN), WAS BORN IN SHOULDICE IN 1928. INITIALLY, WILLIAM TRIED TO SUPPORT HIS FAMILY BY GROWING AND PEDDLING VEGETABLES. WHEN THE FAMILY RECOGNIZED THAT GARDENING WOULD NOT PROVIDE THEM WITH THE INCOME THEY NEEDED, WILLIAM VENTURED OUT TO FARM A QUARTER SECTION OF IRRIGATED LAND 120 KM (75 MILES) AWAY IN VAUXHALL. IN 1941, AFTER THREE YEARS OF FARMING REMOTELY, HE AND ELIZABETH DECIDED TO LEAVE THE ALBERTA COLONY AND RELOCATE TO VAUXHALL. MORRIS WAS 12 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. MORRIS STATED: “… [T]HEY LEFT THE COLONY BECAUSE THERE WERE THINGS GOING ON THAT THEY DID NOT LIKE SO THEY WANTED TO FARM ON THEIR OWN. SO NOW NOBODY HAD MONEY, SO VAUXHALL HAD LAND, YOU KNOW, THAT THEY WANTED TO HAVE THE PEOPLE AND THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO PUT ANY DOWN DEPOSIT THEY JUST WERE GIVEN THE LAND AND THEY HAD TO SIGN A PAPER SAYING THEY WOULD GIVE THEM ONE FOURTH OF THE CROP EVERY YEAR. THAT WAS HOW MY DAD GOT PAID BUT WHAT MY DAD DIDN’T KNOW WAS THAT THE MONEY THAT WENT IN THERE WAS ACTUALLY PAYING OFF THE FARM SO HE WENT TO SEE MR., WHAT WAS HIS LAST NAME, HE WAS THE PERSON IN CHARGE. ANYWAY HE SAID TO HIM “HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE I CAN PAY OFF THIS FARM” AND HE SAYS “YOU’VE BEEN PAYING IT RIGHT ALONG YOU OWE ABOUT TWO HUNDRED AND A FEW DOLLARS”. WELL THAT WAS A REAL SURPRISE FOR THEM SO THEY GAVE THEM THE TWO HUNDRED AND WHATEVER IT WAS THAT HE OWED AND HE BECAME THE OWNER OF THE FARM." MORRIS WENT ON, ”THE DOUKHOBORS ARE AGRARIAN, THEY LIKE TO GROW THINGS THAT’S THEIR CULTURE OF OCCUPATION AND SO THE ONES WHO LIKED FRUIT MOVED TO B.C. LIKE MY UNCLE DID AND MY DAD LIKED FARMING SO HE MOVED TO VAUXHALL AND THERE WERE LET’S SEE, I THINK THERE WERE FOUR OTHER FAMILIES THAT MOVED TO VAUXHALL AND THREE OF THE MEN GOT TOGETHER AND DECIDED THEY WERE GOING TO GET THEIR TOOLS TOGETHER LIKE A TRACTOR AND MACHINERY THEY NEEDED AND THEN THEY WOULD TAKE TURNS…” THE KONKINS RETIRED TO LETHBRIDGE FROM VAUXHALL IN 1968. MORRIS, BY THEN A SCHOOL TEACHER, RELOCATED TO LETHBRIDGE WITH HER OWN FAMILY. WILLIAM KONKIN PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE ON MARCH 3, 1977 AT THE AGE OF 72 AND 23 YEARS LATER, ON APRIL 8, 2000, ELIZABETH KONKIN PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE. THERE JOE DEVELOPED HIS KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH. IN 1869, WHILE JOE WAS IN SCHOOL, HEALY AND HAMILTON WENT NORTH AND OPENED A TRADING POST AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE OLDMAN AND ST. MARY RIVERS; THIS POST WOULD BECOME KNOWN AS FORT WHOOP-UP AND WAS INFAMOUS FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WHISKEY TRADE AND VIOLENCE IN THE AREA UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF THE NORTH-WEST MOUNTED POLICE IN 1874. THREE YEARS LATER, DUE TO A DECLINE IN THE BUFFALO POPULATIONS AND THUS THE ROBE MARKET, HEALY CLOSED THE SUN RIVER CROSSING POST AND MOVED TO FORT BENTON. JOE WAS NOW SIXTEEN AND WAS COMPELLED TO RETURN TO HIS RELATIVES AMONG THE BLOODS. HE FOLLOWED THE LAST BUFFALO HERDS WITH BULL SHIELD, AND JOINED IN RELIGIOUS AND WARFARE ACTIVITIES OF THE TRIBE. WHEN THE BLOODS SETLLED ON THEIR RESERVE IN 1881, JOE WAS THE ONLY MEMBER OF THE TRIBE WHO WAS FLUENT IN BLACKFOOT AND ENGLISH. HE WAS AN OUTSPOKEN SUPPORTER OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS AND DEFIED ATTEMPTS BY THE GOVERNMENT TO SUPRESS DANCES AND FESTIVALS. HE MARRIED WIDE NOSTRILS, THE DAUGHTER OF IRON PIPE, AND THEY HAD SIX DAUGHTERS AND FOUR SONS. JOE WORKED AS AN OFFICIAL INTERPRETER FOR THE GOVERNMENT WHEN A NEW TREATY WAS MADE IN 1883, AND AS A SCOUT FOR THE RNWMP. IN LATER YEARS HE CO-ORDINATED FIRST NATIONS' PARTICIPATION IN THE LETHBRIDGE EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE. JOE HEALY DIED AT ST. PAUL'S MISSION ON THE BLOOD RESERVE IN 1936 AS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED PATRIARCHS OF THE BLOOD TRIBE.

STACKED PINK AND GREEN RIBBON SEWED DOWN TO CREATE CIRCULAR MOTIFS AT THE WAIT. ON EACH SIDE ARE FABRIC TIES ATTACHED AT MOTIF. VARIOUS CREASING THROUGHOUT. 2) H-43.5, L-61, W-2.5 IVORY DELUSTERED SATIN BODICE. BOBBINET LACE AT SHOULDERS AND ALONG EDGES OF V-NECKLINE. STACKED RIBBON CIRCULAR MOTIF AT BOTTOM OF NECKLINE. SHAPING UNDER BUST AND AT SHOULDERS. REVERSE SHOULDER LACE HAS COME AWAY FROM FABRIC. RUST COLOURED STAINING ON REVERSE. VARIOUS CREASING THROUGHOUT. 3) H-105.5, L-83.5, W-1.3 IVORY DELUSTERED SATIN PANTS. WIDE LEG KIMONO CUT. COTTON BOBBINET LACE TRIM AT BOTTOM CUFFS. ELASTIC WAIST. REVERSE LEFT HAS SPLIT SEAM WITH EXPOSED ELASTIC. REVERSE RIGHT SEAM HAS STRETCHED AND FABRIC IS FRAYED. VARIOUS CREASING THROUGHOUT.

WORN BY DONOR AS INFANT TO 3 YRS. OLD. BORN 1921. *UPDATE* IN 2010 NICOLE HEMBROFF TALKED WITH THE DONOR, DORIS SCHEIBNER, WITH REGARD TO HER DONATIONS. SEE BELOW. SCHEIBNER USED THE PETTICOAT IN SEDGEWICK, AB AT TWO YEARS OF AGE, IN 1923. SHE ONLY USED IT FOR ONE YEAR BEFORE SHE GREW OUT OF IT. HER MOTHER PROBABLY WOULD HAVE MADE THE PETTICOAT. SHE WOULD HAVE PURCHASED THE MATERIAL AT SEDGWICK’S LOCAL STORE, WHICH SOLD A VARIETY OF GOODS. “I DON’T THINK THEY WOULD BE EVERYDAY DRESSES,” SHE SAID. IT WAS LIKELY THIS WAS FOR A SUNDAY DRESS. SCHEIBNER SAID, “SUNDAY WAS A DAY TO BE BETTER DRESSED AFTER THE SATURDAY NIGHT BATH. I WAS THE ONLY GIRL IN THE FAMILY SO MY MOTHER PROBABLY LIKED TO DRESS ME UP A LITTLE BIT.” SUNDAY WAS THE DAY HER FATHER GROUND THE GRAIN FOR THE PIGS. HER MOTHER TRIED TO KEEP THE DAY SPECIAL BY SERVING DIFFERENT MEALS OR SOMETIMES HAVING VISITORS. NOBODY ELSE EVER USED THE PETTICOAT. AFTER SCHEIBNER GREW OUT OF IT HER MOTHER PUT IT ON A SHELF SOMEWHERE UPSTAIRS. SCHEIBNER INHERITED THE PETTICOAT WHEN SHE WAS MARRIED. IT HUNG IN THE CLOSET UNTIL SHE GAVE IT TO THE GALT MUSEUM.
