DONOR BELIEVES DRAWING DONE ABOUT 1904. KNOWN AS THE STAGECOACH PICTURE. BY B. BUCK, OF CIRCLE RANCH *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MILITARY OBJECTS, A PORTION OF WHICH WERE DONATED BY BOB FAULDS. A NOTICE FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ON APRIL 1, 1991 LISTS THE DONOR AS DECEASED. CONTACT INFORMATION FOR NEXT OF KIN WAS NOT FOUND. SEE PERMANENT FILE P19640184000-GA FOR HARDCOPY OF NOTICE. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST, BELKNAP 'BALLIE' BUCK, WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM THE STOCKMEN'S MEMORIAL FOUNDATION LIBRARY & ARCHIVES, PAUL H. CARLSON'S BOOK 'THE COWBOY WAY: AN EXPLORATION OF HISTORY AND CULTURE', GLENBOW ARCHIVES, AND AN ARTICLE FROM THE MARCH 31, 1943 ISSUE OF THE INDEPENDENT RECORD NEWSPAPER FROM HELENA, MONTANA. BUCK WAS BORN IN 1872 AT OLD FORT BELKNAP, MONTANA. HIS FATHER WAS CAPTAIN D. W. BUCK, A DETECTIVE WITH THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, AND HIS MOTHER WAS OF ASSINIBOINE AND GROS VENTURES ANCESTRY. IN 1875 THE FAMILY MOVED TO HELENA, MONTANA, AND AS AN ADULT BUCK WORKED AT CATTLE RANCHES THROUGHOUT MONTANA AND SOUTHERN ALBERTA, INCLUDING WORKING AS THE FOREMAN OF CIRCLE RANCH, NEAR LETHBRIDGE. AN ARTIST IN HIS OWN RIGHT, BUCK WAS A CLOSE FRIEND OF WELL KNOWN WESTERN ARTIST CHARLES M. RUSSELL, AND WAS CHOSEN BY GUY WEADICK TO SERVE AS ONE OF THE JUDGES DURING THE FIRST CALGARY STAMPEDE IN 1912. BUCK RETIRED FROM THE CATTLE INDUSTRY IN 1930, AND DIED IN 1943 AT THE MASONIC HOME IN THE HELENA VALLEY. SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR HARDCOPIES OF SOURCE MATERIAL. *UPDATE* IN 2019 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN ARTIFACT SURVEY THAT INCLUDED A NUMBER OF BARBER-RELATED INSTRUMENTS DONATED BY BOB FAULDS. HIS FULL NAME WAS ROBERT ERNEST FAULDS. ATTEMPTS MADE TO MAKE CONTACT HIS NEXT-OF-KIN WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. AN OBITUARY FOUND IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD FOR FAULDS STATES, “BORN, RAISED AND EDUCATED IN TABER, ALBERTA, BOB SPENT THE MAJORITY OF HIS LIFE IN LETHBRIDGE WHERE HE WORKED AS A BARBER AT WESTBROOKS BARBER SHOP, LATER OWNING HIS OWN BUSINESS CALLED BOB’S BARBER SHOP.” JAMES AND HAROLD WESTBROOK WERE THE ORIGINAL PROPRIETORS OF THE WESTBROOKS BARBER SHOP. IT OPENED IN 1917 IN THE BLENNER-HASSETT BLOCK AT 303 6TH STREET SOUTH (LETHBRIDGE DAILY HERALD, 21 JULY 1917). FURTHER RESEARCH INTO HIS BARBER CAREER FOUND A RETIREMENT NOTICE PUBLISHED IN THE HERALD WHICH READS “R. E. FAULDS: I WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT AFTER 48 YEARS OF BARBERING, I WILL BE RETIRING, EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 1987.” IN ADDITION TO A SEPTEMBER 6, 1939 PUBLICATION IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD STATES “… SOME TABER YOUNG MEN APPLIED [FOR THE WAR], AMONG THEM ROBT. FAULDS, JR., OLDEST SON OF THE LATE CHIEF FAULDS, WHO WEEKS AGO OPENED A NEW BARBER SHOP IN TOWN.” FAULDS’ OBITUARY STATES HE “MARRIED OLIVE CARDWELL [1916-2005] ON MARCH 4, 1942, AND TOGETHER THEY RESIDED IN LETHBRIDGE UNTIL HIS PASSING.” THEIR CHILDREN WERE ROBERT THOMAS AND PHILLIP RONALD. BOB FAULDS PASSED AWAY ON MARCH 14, 1991 AT THE AGE OF 73 YEARS. REFERENCE TO FAULDS’ DONATIONS TO THE MUSEUM WERE FOUND IN THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. THERE WAS AN IMAGE PUBLISHED OF MUSEUM OFFICIALS ALONG WITH FAULDS TAKING DOWN HIS BARBER POLE FROM ITS 6TH STREET LOCATION (NOVEMBER 29, 1965). A LINE IN THE MARCH 9, 1964 EDITION OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD READS, “FAULDS TURNED UP [AT THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE MUSEUM] WITH TWO STRAIGHT RAZORS. THE SHAVERS ARE MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD.” PLEASE SEE PERMANENT FILE P19640121000 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, INCLUDING COPIES OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD RESEARCH.

History
ACQUIRED BY WILMA WOOD, DIRECTOR OF THE GALT MUSEUM & ARCHIVES FROM 1999 TO 2002. DRAWING IS AN ORIGINAL AND ONE OF A KIND; THE ARTIST, ALLEN WELLS, STATES HE RARELY MAKES PRINTS OF HIS WORKS SO THAT EVERY BUYER KNOWS THEY HAVE SOMETHING ORIGINAL. WELLS BELIEVES WORK WAS DONE CA. 1995, BUT CANNOT BE SURE AS HE DOES NOT DATE HIS WORK SO THAT THE VIEWER CAN MAKE THEIR OWN INTERPRETATIONS. ARTIST EXPLAINS THAT TITLE OF WORK REFERS TO THE SMOKE SIGNAL IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE PICTURE, WHICH IS THE TRADITIONAL FORM OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN NATIVE PEOPLES. WELLS IS A MEMBER OF THE BLOOD TRIBE, LIVING SOUTHWEST OF STAND OFF AND HAS DONE ART ALL HIS LIFE. HE CURRENTLY DOES ARTWORK FOR SOUTHERN MONUMENT AND FOR THE BLOOD TRIBE (CHILDREN'S SERVICES; EDUCATION). ARTIST MAKES PINS OUT OF STONE WHICH HAVE SOLD AT RODEOS AND CRAFT SHOWS THROUGHOUT THE WESTERN UNITED STATES AND CANADA. WELLS DEPICTS NATIVE CULTURE AND THE SPORT OF RODEO AS "THESE THINGS ARE THE CENTRE OF [HIS] LIFE AND [HIS] WORK SHOWS [HE] IS PROUD TO BE A NATIVE". ONE OF HIS PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS IS HE HAD HIS LOGO CHOSEN FOR THE 6TH WORLD INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S CONFERENCE ON EDUCATION, HELD IN 2002 IN MORLEY, ALBERTA. HE ALSO ILLUSTRATED THE BOOK KIPAITAPIIWAHSINNOUNI: ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE EDUCATION PROGRAM, AND CREATED CARTOONS FOR THE BLOOD TRIBE NEWS. ARTIST DOES VARIOUS ART SHOWS BUT HAS ONLY HAD HIS WORK IN A GALLERY ONCE. SEE HARD COPY FOR FOR MORE INFO.
