History / Biographical
Irma Dogterom is a local historian, community activist, author of several books and a long-time active member of the Lethbridge Historical Society. Mrs. Dogterom was born in Raymond, Alberta, and moved to Lethbridge a few years later. She attended Westminster School and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. She was employed by A.E. Cross Studio as photographic lab assistant. She married Jacob Dogterom in 1950. After the four children reached school age, Mrs. Dogterom started working as secretary and library technician at a country school. In 1968 she transferred to Galbraith School as Library Clerk and later to Paterson School. During the summer break, Mrs. Dogterom volunteered at the Galt Museum. After her retirement in 1989, Irma Dogterom dedicated her time to local history research. She helped compile a district local history (Maclean School and Wilson/White School area). In the early 1990s, she took the job of Secretary and Newsletter editor of the Lethbridge Historical Society. As a member of the LHS executive she was involved in preparation of several historical publications and the Newsletter. She is the author of "Where Was It: A Guide to Early Lethbridge Buildings". Irma Dogterom spearheaded the initiative to recognize the contribution of women in the city, which resulted in the Legacy Ridge Project.

History / Biographical
The “Golden Mile Dancers” were a group of senior’s, who ranged from 65 to 90 years of age and loved to dance for their own enjoyment and the entertainment of others. The group formed between 1971 and 1972. Before their complete formation, they were known as the “Hi Neighbour Club.” However, when the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO) moved to the Southminster United Church basement, the group changed their name to the “Golden Mile Oldtime Dancers.” Originally, the name change was spurred in order to secure a finical grant. As they danced out of the Golden Mile Center, the choice of Golden Mile Oldtime Dancers was truly fitting. Although they received the financial grant, the dancers collectively took to bake sales and janitorial work around the Golden Mile Center to secure future funding. The name was officially changed to the Golden Mile Dancers when the LSCO moved to its present location. The group was well structured, having a set of rules for the president, treasury, and dancers. These guidelines were to remain essential as the dancers highly valued equality among all members. In addition to performing at elderly homes, lodges and public functions, the club sought to promote friendship between the LSCO and other senior groups. For numerous years, they performed at the Canada Day Celebrations in Lethbridge, Whoop-Up Days, Heritage Days, Fort Whoop-Up and the Ag Expo. Michael Pisko, a member of the Golden Mile Dancers, is known for designing the Downtown LA logo. The Golden Mile Dancers also performed in the United States of America. They were widely known throughout the communities of Cut Bank, Shelby, and Billings, Montana. The club danced for nearly 30 years. They disbanded in 2000 due to loss of members and failing health.
