PLOURDE TOLD MACLEAN THAT THE HERALD SIGN CAME FROM A RURAL PROPERTY NEAR CHIN LAKE. THE RURAL LOCATION FEATURED "QUONSETS" FULL OF OTHER ITEMS, INCLUDING GAS MEMORABILIA AND FURNITURE. THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE SIGN, WHO LIVED AT THE PROPERTY, WAS, SAID PLOURDE, NO LONGER LIVING. THE OWNER, CONTINUED PLOURDE, CONDUCTED HIS OWN PICKING "IN BACK ALLEYS IN LETHBRIDGE 60 YEARS AGO". THE KONKINS WERE A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY FROM THE TOWN OF SHOULDICE, ALBERTA, NEAR CALGARY. THEY AND MANY OTHER RUSSIAN FAMILIES COMPOSED THAT TOWN’S DOUKHOBOR COLONY. IT WAS THERE WILLIAM KONKIN MARRIED ELIZABETH WISHLOW. IN 1928, THEIR DAUGHTER, ELSIE WAS BORN. THEY LATER MOVED TO A FARM IN VAUXHALL, ALBERTA. THE PRECEDING AND FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM A TWO-PART INTERVIEW WITH DONOR ELSIE MORRIS, WHICH WAS CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON FEBRUARY 17, 2016. MORRIS DESCRIBES THE PURPOSE OF THE DYES AND HOW HER FATHER BECAME INVOLVED: “DYEING WAS NECESSARY TO DYE THE WOOL THAT YOU SPUN AND SOMETIMES YOU COULDN’T GET THE NECESSARY DYES IN THE STORE, SO I DON’T KNOW WHERE MY DAD GOT THOSE. THEY MIGHT HAVE SENT HIM SOME OR WHAT AND THEN HE WOULD CHOOSE THE COLOURS THEY WANTED AND HE WOULD ORDER THEM. NOW IT SO HAPPENS THAT THE PEOPLE IN THE COLONY ALL WANTED THESE PARTICULAR DYES BECAUSE THEY WERE BETTER THAN THE KIND THEY GOT IN THE STORE. I DON’T KNOW WHY. SO MY DAD BUILT A SCALE AND I REMEMBER THIS SCALE. IT STOOD ON THE TABLE, IT HAD A CENTRAL PART, THEN THERE WAS A ROD GOING ACROSS AND IT CAME DOWN LIKE THIS AND THREE NAILS ON ONE SIDE BROUGHT IT DOWN AND WHEN YOU WANTED TO SELL THE DYE YOU PUT A PIECE OF PAPER DOWN, PUT IN A SPOONFUL UNTIL WE BALANCED [IT] AND THEN YOU GOT AN EVEN BALANCE AND THAT AMOUNT CAME TO TEN CENTS. IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF 2017 THE MUSIC FRANCHISE, HMV CANADA, BEGAN TO THE PROCESS OF CLOSING DOWN ALL 120 OF THEIR STORES ACROSS CANADA. AFTER 30 YEARS OF BUSINESS, THE COMPANY WENT INTO RECEIVERSHIP. PARK PLACE MALL IN DOWNTOWN LETHBRIDGE HAD AN HMV LOCATION OF ITS OWN, WHICH OPENED IN 1994. THIS SHOPPING BAG IS AN EXAMPLE OF SHOPPING BAGS USED AT THE LETHBRIDGE LOCATION OF HMV DURING THE TIME OF RECEIVERSHIP. IT IS ALSO PHYSICAL SYMBOL OF BRICK-AND-MORTAR SHOPPING MALLS. WE HAD THREE TILLS – WE’D RUN ALL THREE OF THEM – AND THERE’D BE STILL CRAZY LINES. THAT WAS FOR ALL OF DECEMBER, AND THEN THIS YEAR, BLACK FRIDAY AND BOXING DAY BOTH HAPPENED, AND I DIDN’T HAVE TO OPEN A THIRD TILL…PEOPLE DON’T WANT SHOPPING TO BE A MULTI-HOUR STROLLING EXPERIENCE. WE’VE ALL GOT TO FACE THE ‘BUYING ONLINE,’ AND IF IT’S NOT ‘BUYING ONLINE’, [IT'S] BUYING ‘BIG BOX’. IF YOU WALK INTO WALMART OR COSTCO AND YOU’RE OUT IN AN HOUR, AND YOU GOT EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED, THAT’S SO MUCH BETTER THAN A DAY AT THE MALL. I DON’T THINK THE THINGS AT THE MALL ARE INTERESTING ENOUGH ANYMORE FOR PEOPLE TO WANT TO PORE OVER THEM, AND HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE WHERE YOU WANDER AROUND THE MALL. THE KIDS WOULD GO OFF ONE WAY; PARENTS WOULD GO OFF THE OTHER. MOM AND DAD WOULD EVENTUALLY SPLIT UP, AS THEY GOT PULLED DIFFERENT WAYS. EVERYONE WOULD SORT OF WANDER AROUND; THEY’D MEET UP AT THE FOOD COURT, AT A CERTAIN TIME, AND THAT WOULD BE THAT, AND IT’S JUST NOT AN EXPERIENCE PEOPLE WANT [ANYMORE]. I THINK PEOPLE FEEL PULLED A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS, AND WE’VE GOTTEN VERY GOOD AT GETTING GOOD RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES, AT THE SAME TIME… MILLENNIALS HAVE FOUND REALLY INTERESTING, ENGAGING WAYS OF OCCUPYING THEIR TIME…YEAH, YOU KNOW PEOPLE ARE THERE TO BUY CERTAIN THINGS AT THE MALL… IF PEOPLE ARE COMING IN FOR A PARTICULAR ITEM AT MY STORE, THEY’RE PROBABLY NOT HITTING ANY OTHER STORE…NOBODY WANTS TO SHOP AROUND. AND THAT’S FINE. I’M NOT A MALL PERSON… WHEN I’M BUYING SOMETHING, I’M PROBABLY GETTING IT OFF AMAZON. I’LL BE IN THE MALL, HEADING OUT TO MY CAR, AND I’LL BE ON MY PHONE ON AMAZON BUYING THE THING THAT I WANT TO BUY, BECAUSE I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. I DON’T WANT TO SHOP AROUND IN THE MALL. UP UNTIL THAT POINT I WOULD BE USING DISPOSABLE CUPS. I HAD A 7-ELEVEN…WHEN WE LIVED IN THE 300 BLOCK OF 15TH STREET FOR 10 YEARS, THERE WAS A 7-ELEVEN A BLOCK AWAY FROM MY HOUSE. YOU HAVE A BAD SLURPEE EXPERIENCE, YOU MIGHT DECIDE NOT TO DRINK THE WHOLE THING AND THEN WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO IS GO BACK IN FOUR HOURS AND TRY AGAIN. IT WAS TO THE POINT WHERE I COULD WALK IN THE FRONT DOORS AND I COULD LOOK AT THE MACHINE, WHICH WOULD BE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROOM AND TELL, JUST BY THE COLOUR AND HOW QUICKLY THAT PADDLE WAS GOING AROUND, HOW GOOD THAT SLURPEE WAS GOING TO BE. I WOULD TURN AROUND AND WALK OUT IF IT WAS MOVING RELATIVELY QUICK AND IT WAS REALLY DARK. SO I KNEW. THAT’S A PROBLEM AND…POTENTIALLY MY BLOOD PRESSURE WOULD CHANGE WHEN I’M DISPENSING THE SLURPEE BECAUSE I’M SO EXCITED TO GET IT. A LOT OF WHAT WE DO AS HUMAN BEINGS IS ABOUT RITUAL AND IT’S NOT EVEN REALLY ABOUT THE SLURPEE ITSELF BUT THAT, AT A CERTAIN POINT OF THE DAY, WE DO THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD. FOR ME, IT WAS AT LUNCH TIME, DRIVING FROM MY HOUSE TO GO GET THAT SLURPEE TO BRING IT BACK TO WORK, WHICH IS A TREMENDOUS WASTE OF TIME. AND FOR WHAT? SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS TRAINING BACKPACK. STEEL AIR TANK, PAINTED MEDIUM GREY, WITH DARK YELLOW CANVAS SHOULDER STRAPS, AND GREEN NYLON WAIST STRAP. MEDIUM GREY STEEL AIR BOTTLE, HELD TO THE HARNESS ASSEMBLY BY A SILVER COLOURED METAL BRACKET. THIS BRACKET HAS A LARGE YELLOW WITH GREEN WRITING STICKER: "MSA AIRMASK MODEL 401". HARNESS ASSEMBLY IS ALSO MEDIUM GREY METAL AND IS ROUGHLY RECTANGULAR IN SHAPE. AT THE TOP OF THE RECTANGLE IS A CIRCLE, WHICH IS WHERE THE YELLOW SHOULDER STRAPS ARE AFFIXED WITH BLACK AND SILVER COLOURED RIVETS TO THE HARNESS ASSEMBLY. YELLOW STRAPS ARE PADDED AND EACH STRAP HAS A SQUARE OF THE LOOP SIDE OF VELCRO AT THE BOTTOMS. THE YELLOW STRAPS ATTACH TO THE RIGID WAIST SUPPORT WITH BLACK NYLON STRAPS. THE ENDS OF THE BLACK STRAPS HAVE A RECTANGULAR PIECE OF THE HOOK SIDE OF VELCRO AND THE VERY ENDS ARE FINISHED WITH A SEMI-CIRCULAR PIECE OF SILVER METAL. THE RIGID WAIST SUPPORT IS PADDED WITH BLACK FABRIC. THE GREEN WAIST STRAPS ARE AFFIXED TO THE RIGID METAL SUPPORT WITH TWO BLACK RIVETS EACH. THE WAIST STRAP CLOSES WITH A SEAT BELT STYLE BUCKLE. THE BUCKLE IS ON THE WEARER'S RIGHT SIDE AND IS STAMPED ON THE REVERSE WITH: "UIO BUCKLE WEAR BELT SNUG. REPLACE IF DAMAGED OR FRAYED." BOTTOM OF AIR BOTTLE IS STAMPED WITH "DOT-3A A2015. D136587 MSA". THE STAMP CONTINUES UNDER THE HARNESS, BUT IS NOT READABLE. PRESSURE GAUGE AND REGULATOR ALSO ON THIS END OF THE BOTTLE. OVERALL IN GOOD CONDITION. BOTTLE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN YELLOW AND THEN PAINTED GREY. GREY PAINT HAS SCRATCHED OFF ALL OVER THE AIR BOTTLE, REVEALING THE YELLOW SURFACE BELOW. IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT PROVIDED AT THE TIME OF DONATION, JESSE KURTZ, DEPUTY CHIEF – SUPPORT SERVICES (RETIRED), EXPLAINED THAT THE “THIS IS JUST A HARNESS FOR TRAINING PURPOSES WITH A STEEL AIR CYLINDER. IT SIMULATES THE ACTUAL WEIGHT AND FEEL OF A REAL SETUP. [IT WAS] ‘HOME BUILT’ FOR TRAINING PURPOSES.” IN THE SUMMER OF 2015, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS WITH CURRENT AND FORMER MEMBERS OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING TREVOR LAZENBY (HIRED IN 1994). HE RECALLED: “I DON’T THINK I EVER WORN ONE OF THESE AT AN ACTUAL FIRE. I THINK I’VE ONLY EVER WORN THE NEXT GENERATION FIBERGLASS-WRAP … WE HAD THE FIBERGLASS ONES IN FRONTLINE SERVICE WHEN I STARTED, SO THIS WOULD BE PRE-1994, IF I’M NOT MISTAKEN. I DON’T THINK WE HAD THESE ON THE TRUCKS IN ’94. THEY WERE AROUND AND THEY WERE BACKUPS, BUT THEY WEREN’T FRONTLINE … WE KEPT ONE OR TWO AT THE NORTHSIDE FIRE HALL AND AT THE WESTSIDE FIRE HALL BECAUSE WHEN GUYS AT LUNCHTIME HAVE A WORKOUT, OR AFTER WORK, THEY’LL HAVE A WORKOUT AND THEY’LL ACTUALLY PUT THE OLD HEAVY STEEL BOTTLE ON AND THEY’LL CLIMB THE STAIRS – SO IT’S USED TO WORK OUT AND NOTHING ELSE. THIS SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS (SCBA) WAS USED BY THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT. IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT PROVIDED AT THE TIME OF DONATION, JESSE KURTZ, DEPUTY CHIEF – SUPPORT SERVICES (RETIRED), EXPLAINED THAT THE MASK WAS “USED BY ALL FIREFIGHTERS TO CONNECT TO THE BELT MOUNTED REGULATOR SCBA TO ENTER HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERES” AND THAT THE HARNESS WAS “USED BY ALL FIREFIGHTERS TO BREATH IN HAZARDOUS (SMOKY) ATMOSPHERES.” HE CONTINUED SAYING THAT THERE ARE “MORE MODERN MASK MOUNTED REGULATOR SCBAS [THAT HAVE BEEN] DEVELOPED AND PURCHASED.” IN THE SUMMER OF 2015, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN, CONDUCTED A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS WITH CURRENT AND FORMER MEMBERS OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING: CLIFF “CHARLIE” BROWN (HIRED IN 1966, RETIRED 2004), TREVOR LAZENBY (HIRED IN 1994), AND LAWRENCE DZUREN (HIRED 1959, RETIRED 1992). BROWN EXPLAINED THAT THIS SCBA “WAS AN ON-DEMAND REGULATOR. THAT WAS NICE TO HAVE DEMAND, BECAUSE NO MATTER WHO IT WAS, THE HARDER YOU BREATHED, THE MORE AIR IT WOULD GIVE YOU. THE HARNESS IS PROBABLY MORE COMFORTABLE [THAN PREVIOUS ONES]. SOME GUYS WOULD USE THREE TANKS, SO THE HARNESS WAS A LITTLE BIT MORE COMFORTABLE FOR THEM. THEY’D COME OUT, THEY’D TURN AROUND, THEY WOULDN’T EVEN TAKE OFF THEIR GEAR. THEY’D TURN AROUND, THERE’D BE GUYS WHO WOULD TAKE THE TANK OFF, PUT ANOTHER TANK ON, HOOK IT ALL UP, A GOOD PAT ON THE BACK, AND BACK IN THEY’D GO WITH ANOTHER TANK. THEY’D DO THAT THREE TIMES BEFORE … THEY WERE JUST TOO TIRED … WE DIDN’T HAVE AN AIR COMPRESSOR TO FILL OUR OWN TANKS. I CAN’T REMEMBER WHERE THEY WENT. THEY MUST HAVE WENT TO THE SWIMMING POOL.” LAZENBY CONTINUED SAYING THAT THIS SCBA WAS “A VERY, VERY OLDER GENERATION SCBA BOTTLE. THESE WERE KIND OF RUDIMENTARY DESIGN. THE BOTTLE WAS STEEL ON THESE, WHICH MADE THEM VERY, VERY HEAVY. MODERN BOTTLES ARE FIBERGLASS WRAPPED WHICH MAKES THEM MUCH, MUCH LIGHTER; ADDED TO WHICH, IT HAD A BARELY PADDED HARNESS SYSTEM ON IT AND BASICALLY A GLORIFIED SEATBELT STRAP FOR A WAIST STRAP. SO WITH THESE KINDS OF THINGS, YOU DON’T WANT TO KEEP A TON OF WEIGHT ON YOUR SHOULDERS BECAUSE IT FATIGUES YOUR UPPER BODY VERY, VERY QUICKLY WHEN YOU’RE WORKING. BUT WITH THIS TYPE OF HARNESS ON THEM, IF YOU CINCHED THE WAIST UP REALLY TIGHT AND TOOK THE PRESSURE OFF YOUR SHOULDERS, THIS JUST SEEMED TO DIG INTO YOUR WAIST LIKE CRAZY, LIKE IT WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO WEAR … THAT BEING SAID, WHEN GUYS WENT TO THIS FROM LIKE THE CANISTERS THAT THEY USED TO WEAR, THIS MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE A NEW LEASE ON LIFE FOR THESE GUYS … I WORE THESE IN TRAINING – I DON’T THINK I EVER WORE ONE OF THESE BOTTLES ON AN ACTUAL FIRE CALL … WE HAD THE FIBERGLASS ONES IN FRONTLINE SERVICE WHEN I STARTED SO THIS WOULD BE PRE-1994, IF I’M NOT MISTAKEN. I DON’T THINK WE HAD THESE ON THE TRUCKS IN ’94. THEY WERE AROUND AND THEY WERE BACKUPS, BUT THEY WEREN’T FRONTLINE.” HE ELABORATED FURTHER, SAYING: “WE DIDN’T HAVE INDIVIDUAL MASKS; WE SHARED MASKS ON THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BACK THEN … THERE WASN’T ENOUGH MONEY FOR THEM TO BUY US OUR OWN INDIVIDUAL FACE PIECE … SO WHAT WE USED TO DO IS AFTER EVERY INCIDENT OR AFTER EVERY TIME YOU WORE ONE OF THESE THINGS, IT WOULD COME OFF THE TRUCK, WE WOULD HAVE A BOTTLE OF MSA MASK CLEANER THAT WE WOULD PUT INTO A TUB, WE WOULD MAKE A SOAPY WATER SOLUTION, WE WOULD WASH THE MASK, RINSE THE MASK, LET IT HANG TO DRY, AND THE NEXT PERSON WOULD USE IT AS THE NEXT SHIFT CAME ON.” HE ADDED THAT NOW EVERYONE IN THE DEPARTMENT HAS THEIR OWN MASK: “WE’VE HAD OUR OWN MASKS FOR 10-12 YEARS. WE STILL SHARE THE SCBAS AS FAR AS THE BOTTLE AND THE HARNESS GOES … THEY’RE IN THE RACKS ON THE TRUCK, IN THE BACKS OF THE SEATS AND DOWN IN BY THE HOSE OR THE PUMP COMPARTMENTS.” IN DISCUSSING WHY THIS MODEL IS NO LONGER USED, LAZENBY STATED: “THIS HOSE EASILY CRIMPED SO YOUR AIR SUPPLY COULD BE CUT OFF. THE AIR SUPPLY THAT NOW GOES FROM THE TANK TO YOUR MASK IS A MUCH MORE RIGID HOSE THAT, REALLY, YOU’D HAVE TO BASICALLY BEND IT IN HALF TO STOP THE FLOW OF AIR.” DZUREN ADDED FURTHER: “PRIOR TO [THIS] OUR BREATHING APPARATUS WAS WHAT THEY CALLED A CANISTER TYPE OF BREATHING APPARATUS … IT WAS JUST A CANISTER THAT YOU HAD IN FRONT OF YOU HERE AND IT WAS LAYERS OF … GEL, AND SAND, AND SILICA … THERE WAS A SHELF-LIFE WITH THOSE THINGS. IF YOU USED THEM, YOU PRETTY WELL HAD TO DISCARD THEM AFTER YOU USED THEM.” WHEN ASKED WHEN THIS TYPE OF SCBA CAME INTO SERVICE, DZUREN STATED: “I WOULD PROBABLY SAY MAYBE IN THE ‘70S SOMETIME? … I RECALL GUYS GOING IN WHEN WE JUST HAD THOSE CANISTERS. THEY WOULD GO WITHOUT ANYTHING. AND THEY WOULD COME OUT AFTER A WHILE AND THEY WOULD BE BARFING THEIR GUYS OUT … IT SEEMED TO BE, EVEN PRIOR TO MY TIME, WHEN THE STORIES I HEARD FROM GUYS THERE LONGER THAN MYSELF, THAT SEEMED TO BE THE MACHO THING. GET IN THERE AND THEY’D GET IN THERE WITHOUT A MASK. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THE SMITH FAMILY WAS PROVIDED BY THE DONOR AT THE TIME OF DONATION. BEGINNING IN THE 1940S, THE SMITH FAMILY RESIDED AT 1254 7 AVENUE SOUTH. PHYLLIS REMAINED IN THE HOUSE UNTIL HER DEATH AT 104 YEARS OF AGE, ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2009. WHILE CLEANING UP HIS MOTHER’S HOUSE, THE DONOR CAME ACROSS SEVERAL BAGS MARKED ‘FOR MUSEUM’. THE ITEMS WERE USED BY THE DONOR FROM AN INFANT UNTIL THE AGE OF APPROXIMATELY 9 YEARS OLD. IN THE INTERVIEW, KEVIN ASKS IF ROBERT FELT HIS CHILDHOOD WAS IDYLLIC. ROBERT RESPONDS, SAYING: “FOR ME IT WAS. I MEAN, I WAS BORN IN WARTIME STILL AND MAYBE IT WASN’T IDYLLIC FOR MY PARENTS, BUT IT WAS FOR ME. AND THE NEIGHBOURHOODS WERE DIFFERENT THEN. YOU WERE JUST LET OUT THE DOOR AND YOU WENT OUT TO PLAY WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD KIDS AND THERE WERE NO CONCERNS THAT THE PARENTS HAVE TODAY. YES, A VERY HAPPY TIME, I WOULD SAY.” ROBERT WAS BORN IN OCTOBER 1940 TO PHYLLIS (NEE GROSS) AND ALLAN F. SMITH, AT ST. MICHAEL’S HOSPITAL. PHYLLIS WAS BORN TO FELIX AND MAGDALENA (NEE FETTIG) GROSS IN HARVEY, ND AND MOVED WITH HER FAMILY TO A FARM IN THE GRASSY LAKE AREA. SHE MOVED INTO LETHBRIDGE AND ATTENDED ST. BASIL’S SCHOOL IN THE 1910s. ALLAN WAS BORN IN ECHO BAY, ON, TO REV D.B. AND MRS. SMITH. HIS FATHER WAS A UNITED CHURCH MINISTER AND MOVED THE FAMILY TO EDMONTON. ALLAN WAS OFFERED A JOB AT WESTERN GROCERS IN LETHBRIDGE AND MET PHYLLIS WHILE IN THE CITY. THEY WERE MARRIED ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1939. ROBERT IS AN ONLY CHILD AND SUFFERED FROM RHEUMATIC FEVER AS A CHILD. HE BELIEVES THIS MAY BE PART OF THE REASON HIS MOTHER SAVED THESE ITEMS. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THE SMITH FAMILY WAS PROVIDED BY THE DONOR AT THE TIME OF DONATION. BEGINNING IN THE 1940S, THE SMITH FAMILY RESIDED AT 1254 7 AVENUE SOUTH. PHYLLIS REMAINED IN THE HOUSE UNTIL HER DEATH AT 104 YEARS OF AGE, ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2009. WHILE CLEANING UP HIS MOTHER’S HOUSE, THE DONOR CAME ACROSS SEVERAL BAGS MARKED ‘FOR MUSEUM’. THE ITEMS WERE USED BY THE DONOR FROM AN INFANT UNTIL THE AGE OF APPROXIMATELY 9 YEARS OLD. IN THE INTERVIEW, KEVIN ASKS IF ROBERT FELT HIS CHILDHOOD WAS IDYLLIC. OFF-WHITE KNITTED DIAPER COVER. ALL ONE PIECE, TWO LEG HOLES, WITH DRAWSTRING WAIST. DIAGONAL SEAMS ON THE FRONT MAKE AN INVERTED "V" POINTING UP TOWARDS THE WAIST BAND FROM THE LEG HOLES. YARN APPEARS TO HAVE YELLOWED OVER THE YEARS. SEVERAL HOLES IN THE STITCHING, INCLUDING ON THE DIAGONAL SEAM ABOVE THE RIGHT LEG HOLE, ON THE BACK RIGHT BACK (HOLES ON THE FRONT AND BACK ALMOST LINE UP), AND ON THE WAISTBAND, ESPECIALLY AT THE BACK. DRAWSTRING STILL IN WAISTBAND, BUT IS NOW IN TWO PIECES. DIAGONAL SEAMING ON THE FRONT SHOWS QUITE A LOT OF TENSION/STRESS.

MENU ITEMS HAVE BEEN HAND PAINTED ON WITH WHITE AND LIGHT GREEN PAINT. TEXT READS, FROM TOP: “SANDWICHES. COLD HAM 10¢. FRIED HAM 15¢. HAMBURGERS 10¢. BUTTERED TOAST 10¢. DOUGHNUTS 2 FOR 5¢. CAKE OR PIE 10¢. TEA COFFEE OR MILK 5¢.” NO BACKING ON FRAME. MENU IS HELD IN FRAME WITH 19 FINISHING NAILS. SILVER COLOURED METAL EYE HOOK IN CENTRE TOP OF FRAME FOR HANGING PURPOSES. POOR TO FAIR CONDITION. MENU SHOWS SIGNS OF WATER DAMAGE ALL OVER, BUT ESPECIALLY ALONG THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE MENU, WHERE PRICES ARE LISTED. POSTER BOARD HAS RIPPED ALONG THE EDGES, ESPECIALLY IN TOP LEFT HAND CORNER. WATER DAMAGE IS ESPECIALLY EVIDENT ON THE BACK OF THE SIGN.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION COMES FROM AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY KEVIN MACLEAN IN DECEMBER 2015 WITH THE DONOR, REBECCA HOLAND, FROM LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES, AND FROM THE HENDERSON DIRECTORIES. IN HER INTERVIEW, REBECCA PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT THE SIGN: “I HAD A RESTAURANT CALLED THE TUMBLEWEED CAFÉ. IT WAS LOCATED IN AN HISTORIC BUILDING ON 9TH AVENUE NORTH AND WHEN I OPENED IT A FELLOW CAME IN, WHOSE NAME I DO NOT KNOW. HE SAID ‘THIS LOOKS LIKE A GOOD PLACE FOR THIS SIGN.’ THE SIGN THAT HE GAVE ME THAT’S BEFORE US TODAY, HE TOLD ME WAS FROM THE WONDER CAFÉ THAT USED TO BE ON 13 STREET NORTH. AND HE GUESSED FROM THE PRICES ON THE MENU – HE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BEFORE THE SECOND WORLD WAR. AND THAT’S ALL I REMEMBER. I DON’T KNOW HIS NAME AND I THANKED HIM, AND HUNG IT UP.” REBECCA LEFT THE SIGN HANGING IN THE CAFÉ FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE YEARS. THE SIGN THEN WENT WITH HER TO THE BEAVER MINES GENERAL STORE, WHERE IT HUNG FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. REBECCA SAID “AND I JUST SOLD THAT STORE AND AM PACKING UP MY LIFE AND I THOUGHT POSSIBLY THE GALT MUSEUM MIGHT HAVE A USED FOR THIS.” WHEN ASKED WHY SHE TOOK THE SIGN WITH HER TO THE BEAVER MINES GENERAL STORE, SHE SAID: “I GUESS I DO HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR SOME NOSTALGIA AND THE FACT THAT IT IS REAL AND THAT IT IS HAND PAINTED AND THAT SO MANY PEOPLE TODAY, WHEN THEY SEE IT, THEY GET A CHUCKLE AT THE PRICES. SO I THINK THERE’S AN ELEMENT OF FUN AND AN ELEMENT OF NOSTALGIA.” AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED ON FEBRUARY 27, 1998 DISCUSSES THE OPENING OF THE TUMBLEWEED CAFÉ, OPERATED BY REBECCA HOLAND AND HER BUSINESS PARTNER, CHARLENE NESBITT, AND LOCATED AT 707 9 AVENUE NORTH. “HOLAND WAS PROGRAM SERVICES COORDINATOR FOR FORT WHOOP-UP … NEITHER WOMAN HAD FORMAL RESTAURANT TRAINING BUT EACH BRINGS HER OWN SKILLS TO THE VENTURE.” IT CONTINUES: “TUMBLEWEED IS IN A FORMER GROCERY STORE BUILDING IN 1914 AND OWNED INITIALLY BY JOHN BERTE. AN OLD PHOTO SHOWS THE BERTE FAMILY POSING ON THE FRONT STEPS. DAUGHTER MILLIE LUCIANO STILL LIVES NEXT DOOR … THE J. BERTE GROCERY STORE HAD ONCE BEEN THE HUB OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, SAYS HOLAND, THANKS IN PART TO THE FACT IT HOUSED THE ONLY TELEPHONE IN STAFFORDVILLE … TUMBLEWEED CAFÉ IS ATTRACTING REGULAR CUSTOMERS WHO POP IN FOR COFFEE AND A SLICE OF PIE OR SOME OF HOLAND’S CHOCOLATE SWIRL CHEESECAKE. THE CAFÉ’S HOMEMADE BREAD AND SOUPS ARE ALSO BECOMING ITS TRADEMARKS.” ACCORDING TO THE HENDERSON DIRECTORIES, THE WONDER CAFÉ WAS LOCATED AT 432 13 STREET NORTH AND WAS OPERATED BY LOU ED HONG FROM 1939 UNTIL 1954. FROM 1955 TO 1960 THE CAFÉ WAS KNOWN AS WONDER CONFECTIONARY. THEN IN 1961 TO 1960, IT WAS OPERATED BY GLEN E. KERNEY AS WONDER CONFECTIONARY. IN 1971, WONDER CONFECTIONARY WAS OPERATED BY JOSEPH BOISVENUE. IN 1972 THE PROPERTY WAS VACANT AND SUBSEQUENTLY USED FOR OTHER PURPOSES. A NOTICE FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD, PUBLISHED AUGUST 12, 1939, READS AS FOLLOWS: “LOU HONG HAS PURCHASED THE SNACK SHACK COFFEE SHOP, 13TH STREET NORTH, AND HAS CHANGED THE NAME TO WONDER CAFÉ.” AN ADVERTISEMENT FROM AUGUST 14, 1939 READS: “BUSINESS CHANGE. I HAVE PURCHASED THE SNACK SHACK COFFEE SHOP AND HAVE ADDED GROCERIES AND CONFECTIONARY. I WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE LUNCHES, ICE CREAM DISHES AND COLD DRINKS. YOU WILL LIKE THE SERVICE.
