Dayliner No. 9022 at Lethbridge railway station. The Canadian Pacific Railway Dayliner, known as the“widow maker” for its speed and accidents, was a self- propelled one car passenger train that began service in the 1950s. At one time the Dayliner ran between Medicine Hat and Lethbridge and between Lethbridge and towards Hope, British Columbia. Service south of Calgary stopped in 1971. Decreasing ridership, increasing level crossing wrecks as well as travelers’ preference for airline service forced the cessation of the Dayliner service between Lethbridge and Calgary. Service between Calgary and Edmonton was continued until September 1985.
