Bert (Bertram) Barnes
History / Biographical
The material in this collection is primarily postcards kept by Bert (Bertram) Barnes, the grandfather of the donor Elaine Black Hamilton. Mr. Barnes was born in England and first visited Canada in 1903 but returned to England in 1905. He married in 1908. When hostilities broke out in 1914, he enlisted in the army and served for 278 days. He and Mrs. Barnes moved to Canada permanently in 1920 and had two daughters. Mr. Barnes moved to Waterton and worked on various building projects including the Prince of Wales Hotel. He became a park warden and in 1928 was posted to the remote Belly River warden station. Later he was transferred to another warden station and was said to have been one of the most popular, helpful wardens to ever work in the park. He served as a warden until 1948 when he retired at the age of 60. The couple moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia in August or September, 1949. His career in the park was filled with memorial events including the capture of the notorious poacher Joe Cosley, fighting the 1935 forest fire, fishing successes and thrilling stories of bears. Barnes was an avid collector of oddities and souvenirs. The postcards were but one. He also built an arm chair of ordinary proportions made entirely of elk antlers which he collected while on patrol. It was an object of pride because it took so long to collect the antlers required for making the chair. Among the donated items in this collection is a confession book which served as a source of humor and a way to collect autographs of friends. A description of this book’s purpose is included in the file.
