History / Biographical
The donor, a Senior Planner with the City of Lethbridge, oversaw the demolition of the Bridge Inn. He took these photographs on the day of the demolition. Mr. Kuhl is also the Project Manager for the Heart of Our City master plan for Lethbridge's downtown core. The Bridge Inn was originally opened as the Queen's Hotel at what would become 316 1 Avenue South, in 1898. It replaced a building known as Roberge Hall, also called Alphonse's Hall, that stood on the same site from about 1885 or 1886. In 1902 T. Rooney bought the hotel and changes its name to the Arlington Hotel. A new mahogney bar was added, accented by carved oak around a central panel of plate glass. In 1904 a 30 foot x 40 foot frame addition with iron siding was built, and in 1910 the entire building was replaced by a three storey brick structure. An adjoining older building was acquired and renovated, bringing the capacity of the Arlington Hotel to 117 rooms. It was the largest hotel in the city. Much later the Arlington was remodelled and renamed the Plainsmen Hotel. Finally, in 1976 the hotel was given the name Bridge Inn. It's condition deteriorated over the years. The City of Lethbridge evenutally bought the hotel and tried to interest prospective buyers in it. When that failed, the building was demolished on 24 May 2007. Source: Dogertom, Irma. Where Was It? History / Biographical
Hans Enoch Nielson Wight was born July 29, 1889, in Hyrum, Utah, USA. His father was Joseph Moroni Wight, and his mother’s maiden name was Cynthia Elnora Nielson. Joseph was born in 1844 in Hume, New York, and as a seven-year-old travelled west in the year 1851 with his LDS (Mormon) pioneer family. In line with LDS teachings of the time, Joseph became a polygamist and had two wives. Cynthia was his second wife. She was born in Weber County, Utah, in 1860. Hans was the sixth child born to Joseph and Cynthia, but only the second to live past infancy. After his birth, his parents were more successful and brought eight more children into the world, all but one of whom lived to adulthood. In the late 1880s, the LDS Church was sending members north to colonize Southern Alberta, and on June 8, 1891, when Hans was not yet two years old, his parents took their two living children and moved to the brand new community of Cardston, Alberta, snuggled on the edge of the vast, untamed, Canadian prairie. Hans learned to fish and hunt, and even before his teenage years he was an expert marksman. During the day in his father’s blacksmith shop, he learned to be a blacksmith, a wheelwright, and a carpenter, and in the evening he studied books. While finishing high school, he learned to play several instruments. He was a member of the Cardston Military Band. He became a certified machinist, a master electrician, and a licensed plumber. Because he drove a tractor, aborigine friends on the Blood reservation next to Cardston called him Iron Horse. Some remained life-long friends. On August 1, 1908, when nineteen years old, Hans went to Utah to attend Brigham Young College in Logan. He also studied through correspondence courses at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, the University of Missouri, and the Alberta Institute of Technology and Art, obtaining degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering. For the first six years of his professional career, he worked for the US Reclamation Service on the St. Mary’s River project in Montana, but he still spent his weekends in Cardston, which was only twenty miles away. On one of these weekends, he met a young lady named Alice McClung from northern Ireland who was a recent convert to the LDS Church. On January 11, 1911, Alice became Mrs. Hans E. Wight. He was not quite 22 years old and she was 20. An aside: Five years later, Hans’s younger brother Eugene married Alice’s younger sister Jenny, and their two families generated double cousins who grew up very close. At that time the LDS Church was constructing a temple in Cardston; it was to be used to perform certain sacred ceremonies, and Hans was offered a job as construction engineer, thus beginning his professional life in Canada. When the main part of the construction was finished, he accepted a position in Drumheller, Alberta, where, as a mine surveyor and master mechanic, he was instrumental in the development of its huge coal resources. He remained in Drumheller ten years. In addition to his mining duties he also taught night classes in mechanical, electrical, and steam engineering. When his family finally left Drumheller, he had three children: Elizabeth (Bessie) who was 14, Marjorie (Marge) who was 7, and Eileen who was 5. To be nearer to the LDS community, he moved his family to Taber, Alberta, in 1926. He had obtained the position of Chief Engineer and Master Mechanic for the Leland Coal Company based in Chicago. He was responsible for all mine maintenance both above and below ground. In addition to its large land holdings and mining operations, Leland Coal supplied the district with electricity. Their electric system was later purchased by the Calgary Power Company, and Hans became involved in extending power lines throughout Southern Alberta as well as in building power and light systems for its towns. Soon he relocated to Lethbridge, Alberta. However, his Calgary Power Company job required that he be away from home too much, so he resigned and accepted a position at the newly constructed Lethbridge Government Grain and Storage Elevator. In 1935, Hans campaigned for the new Social Credit Party and was elected Member of the Alberta legislative assembly (MLA) for Lethbridge by a landslide. In 1937, he resigned under pressure. Someone was leaking sensitive political information to the Lethbridge Herald, and Social Credit leadership suspected him (probably correctly). He moved to Calgary and became Chief Engineer of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Calgary department store where he remained until World War II. In 1941 Hans left the Hudson’s Bay Company and enlisted at the rank of Pilot Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He had hoped to work on the Alaskan Highway as an engineer, but was instead deployed to air bases across the Prairie Provinces and Newfoundland where he was charged with maintaining and constructing airbase facilities. At the same time, he was often assigned to organize recreation and entertainment for the airmen. He was released from active duty with the rank of Flight Lieutenant in February, 1945, and moved to Bremerton, Washington, where he was hired as an electrical engineer repairing American ships, mostly destroyers, damaged in Pacific Ocean warfare. He performed this work until the Japanese surrender. Then he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Hans was 55 years old when he returned to the USA, and he remained there the remainder of his life working as surveyor, city engineer, construction engineer, and city manager in cities throughout northern Utah. He also lived in Los Angeles where he was employed in the development of the San Clemente Island Missile Base for the US military. He died in Salt lake City, Utah on October 12, 1965, at 76 years of age, leaving behind his wife Alice and their three daughters. Although only the oldest daughter married, she had seven children, and those children now have over one hundred descendants. The Canadian Doukhobor Society (CDS) was established in Salmo, B.C on January 1, 1967. Their aim was the unification of all Doukhobor on the basis of Doukhobor principles. The organization supported and promoted learning of Russian language, its own distance learning system, periodicals dealing with Doukhobor education and culture. The Doukhobors emigrated from Russia in the late 19th century. The Doukhobors originally settled in Saskatchewan and later branched into British Columbia. In 1915-17, the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood established a new colony of 13,500 acres near the towns of Cowley and Lundbreck in Alberta on the main southern line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Alberta settlement was an important transit centre for production of grains, vegetables and hay for the horse logging and orchard operations in B.C., and for the natural advantage of stock raising. The Doukhobor that lived in South-western Alberta came from the British Columbia settlements.

THE WHITE TRIMMING FOLLOWS THE BOTTOM EDGE, THE SLEEVE EDGES AND THE COLLAR. THE COLLAR OPENS WITH A METAL ZIPPER, ENDING IN A SMALL SILVER CHAIN. A SMALL WHITE TAG IN THE BACK OF THE COLLAR READS “12” IN RED. EXCELLENT CONDITION: THE COLLAR IS CREASED ON ONE CORNER.

UPON DONATION TO THE MUSEUM, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ASKED MEMBERS OF THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING (GSN) ALUMNAE TO PROVIDE WRITTEN ANSWERS ON QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO EACH ARTIFACT DONATED IN THE COLLECTION. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS COME FROM THOSE RESPONSES CORRESPONDING TO EACH INDIVIDUAL ARTIFACT. THIS SHIRT WAS A PART OF THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING BASKETBALL UNIFORM. WHILE THE SPECIFIC DATE OF THIS ARTIFACT IS UNKNOWN, IT WOULD HAVE MOST LIKELY BEEN IN USE EARLIER THAT 1965, AS THE NURSING SCHOOL HAD GALT ROYAL UNIFORMS IN THAT YEAR THAT WERE DIFFERENT TO THIS ONE. THE UNIFORM WOULD HAVE BEEN USED BY “STUDENTS WHO WERE ON THE TEAM. BETWEEN 1965-68 ST. MICHAEL STUDENTS WERE [ON THE] TEAM ALSO.” ACCORDING TO THE HISTORY ATTACHED TO THIS ARTIFACT, SPORTS ACTIVITIES FOR THE STUDENTS WERE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR LIVES DURING TRAINING. THIS ARTIFACT IS AMONG A COLLECTION DONATED NEAR THE END OF 2014, BEING THE SECOND WAVE OF GSN ARTIFACTS ACQUIRED BY THE MUSEUM THAT YEAR. BOTH DOCTORS AND NURSES WOULD HAVE USED THIS ARTIFACT DURING THE PROCEDURE OF TRACHEOTOMY, WHICH CREATES A DIRECT AIRWAY IN THROUGH AN INCISION IN THE TRACHEA (WINDPIPE). 1: WOOD CASING LID WRAPPED IN BROWN, CHERRY FAUX LEATHER FABRIC. THE TOP HAS A STRIPE OF CREAM CLOTH TAPE, LIFTING AT ONE CORNER AND WRITTEN ON IT IN BLUE PEN IS, “CSR SKIN THERMOMETER”. THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS PADDED AT THE TOP WITH GREY FABRIC. THE FAUX LEATHER IS FRAYING AWAY AT THE EDGES AND LIFTING AT THE SEAM AT THE SIDE OF THE LID, REVEALING THE WOOD UNDERNEATH. 2: A CIRCULAR SLIP OF CREAM PAPER TITLED “CORRECTING TABLE”. THE REST IS TYPED IN BLACK INK. HANDWRITTEN BLUE INK ADDITIONS FILL IN THE INSTRUMENT NUMBER AS “3878” AS WELL AS FILLING ADDITIONS TO THE CORRECTION CHART. THE SLIGHTEST WRINKLING LEAVES TWO SMALL CREASES ON THE SURFACE. DIAMETER: 6.3 CM 3: THE SKIN THERMOMETER. IT IS CIRCULAR IN A BLACK PLASTIC CASING WITH A SINGLE HALF CIRCLE PLASTIC WINDOW TO THE DIAL ON THE TOP SIDE. THE DIAL READS “FOREGGER”, “FAHRENHEIT HEIDENWOLF AUSTRIA”, AND “PATENT 3878”. THE BOTTOM SIDE HAS A 1.1 CM HIGH, 2.3 CM DIAMETER CYLINDRICAL ARM ON WHICH A ROUND SENSOR SITS. THE SENSOR IS MISSING ALMOST ALL ITS PATINA, ONLY A LITTLE BIT SURVIVING AT THE EDGES. H: 3.8 CM, D: 7 CM 4: THE BOTTOM OF THE CASE. AN OPEN WOOD CYLINDER WRAPPED ON THE OUTSIDE WITH FAUX LEATHER FABRIC WITH GREY FELT ON THE INSIDE. THE INSIDE LIP (ON WHICH THE THERMOMETER SITS) DOES NOT WRAP AROUND COMPLETELY, LEAVING SPACE FOR THE SENSOR ARM. THE BOTTOM EDGE IS UNCOVERED. History / Biographical
Garry Allison was born in Lethbridge in 1940. During his career, he served as the Sports Editor of the Lethbridge Herald, as well as the District Editor, City Editor and finished his journalism career as the Outdoors Editor. He worked fulltime in the Herald's Sports department in 1974 after working in the Printing Department. Allison was an avid rodeo fan and spent much of his career covering local rodeos throughout Southern Alberta, beginning in the mid-1960s until his retirement in 2002. He received numerous awards for his coverage of rodeos, high school sports and the outdoors, including the Max Bell Memorial Award for outstanding coverage of amateur sports in Alberta. Because of his achievements in Southern Alberta sports, he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame. Allison was heavily involved in the local community, including coaching the high school girls’ basketball in Coalhurst and Winston Churchill for ten years. Family was a central priority to Garry Allison: he and his wife, Mary, were married for 55 years and had cared for foster children for 32 years.

THE SET WAS USED BY HER FATHER, LEONARD E.SALKELD, THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER AS AN ENGINEER. ON HER MEMORIES OF THE DRAFTING SET, MCENTEE RECALLED, “[THE SET] WOULD HAVE BEEN HIS FOR HIS LIFETIME, THROUGH UNIVERSITY, AND ALL THE TIME.” “I DIDN’T SEE THEM TILL LATER. THEY ALSO HAD, GROWING UP [IN BRITISH COLUMBIA]…THEY DID THEIR DRAFTING AND THEIR MAPS/BLUEPRINTS, BUT HE DID MAPS THAT [WERE] ON LINEN, AND THEN IT WAS WAXED. WHEN THEY WERE DONE WITH THOSE MAPS, MOM WOULD WASH THEM, WASH THE WAX OUT, AND USE THE LINEN. I STILL HAVE SOME OF THAT LINEN. HE’D COME FROM A FARM, AND HE DIDN’T WANT LAND, SO HE CHOSE THE UNIVERSITY AND TOOK HIS DEGREE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING” MCENTEE ELABORATED ON HER FATHER’S EXPERIENCES IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA, NOTING, “HE DID WORK FOR THE PFRA – A LOT OF WORK HERE, AND A LOT OF WORK ON THE ST. MARY’S IRRIGATION DISTRICT. WE LIVED IN ARROWWOOD FOR 4 OR 5 YEARS, TILL WE MOVED TO B.C. DAD WORKED ON A SIPHON OUT OF VAUXHALL. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IN [1951-1955]. IT WAS AFTER THE DROUGHT ON THE PRAIRIES, AND THEY WERE PUTTING IN THE IRRIGATION, AND REHABILITATING THE PRAIRIES. HE SAYS, “YOU WANT TO GET ON THE AIR,” HE SAYS, “AND WE CAN TALK AND GET A TRANSMITTER GOING.” IT ALL SOUNDED VERY FASCINATING AND INTERESTING. BUT, I’M ON THE FARM, HERE. WE DON’T EVEN HAVE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION. I [SAID], “HOW CAN I EVER DO THAT?” THERE ARE METHODS AND WAYS…YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT. HE FINALLY CONVINCED ME. I [HAD TO] LOOK INTO IT. AND THAT’S WHAT I DID. REDEKOPP BEGAN PURSUING HIS INTEREST IN RADIO TRANSMISSION IN THE 1950S. ON THE MICROPHONE, REDEKOPP NOTED, “[IT WAS] JUST A CRYSTAL MICROPHONE. CHEAP MICROPHONE. CRYSTALS WERE CHEAP. A DYNAMIC MICROPHONE GETS A LITTLE BIT MORE INVOLVED. THIS IS THE CHEAPEST WAY OF GOING, AND IT’S A HIGH OUTPUT, AND IT’S NOT OF HIGH QUALITY. MICROPHONES-–THE HIGHS ARE A BIT PEAKISH. WE DON’T EVEN HAVE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION. I [SAID], “HOW CAN I EVER DO THAT?” THERE ARE METHODS AND WAYS…YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT. HE FINALLY CONVINCED ME. I [HAD TO] LOOK INTO IT. AND THAT’S WHAT I DID. COILS ARE JOINED TOGETER WITH METAL BAR AT SCREWS IN THE CENTER, AND JOINED BY CLOTH-COVERED WIRE AT SCREWS ON ENDS; CENTER METAL BAR JOINING COILS HAS BLUE PLASTIC COVER WRAPPED AROUND IT. COILS JOINED AT END SCREWS WITH CLOTH-COVERED WIRE TO WHITE METAL MOUNT WITH SILVER METAL DISCS. MOUNT HAS TWO SETS OF NINETEEN DISCS; DISCS ARE SHAPED LIKE HALF-CIRCLES; DISCS ARE JOINED AT TOPS WITH METAL ROD RUNNING THROUGH. ON MAY 10, 2018, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED ED REDEKOPP REGARDING HIS DONATION OF AN AMATEUR TRANSMITTER RADIO AND ACCESSORIES. REDEKOPP BEGAN PURSUING HIS INTEREST IN RADIO TRANSMISSION IN THE 1950S. ON THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL, REDEKOPP NOTED, “THE ANTENNA IS ALMOST THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL STATION. THERE’S TWO THINGS: YOU CAN EITHER GET YOUR RADIO WAVES THROUGH THE ANTENNA, OR YOU CAN HEAT YOUR CONDUCTOR, YOUR TRANSMISSION LINE, IF IT DOESN’T MATCH, TOO.” “YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR ANTENNA TUNED. FREQUENCY AND WAVE LENGTH GO TOGETHER AND THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS TUNED TO THE CORRECT FREQUENCY SO IT WILL MATCH THE ANTENNA. IF IT DOESN’T MATCH, YOU’RE JUST [HEATING] YOUR CONDUCTOR AND YOU’RE NOT GETTING ANYWHERE FAR. THAT’S THE KEY. I WAS NEVER A FARMER; I’D HAVE STARVED TO DEATH IF I HAD FARMED. BUT, ANOTHER FARMER, WHO WAS TOTALLY ELECTRONICALLY ILLITERATE, HAD AN UNCLE, DORY MALENBERG, THE ASSISTANT ENGINEER AT CJOC. HE WANTED HIM TO GET ON AMATEUR RADIO SO THAT THEY COULD TALK BACK AND FORTH THAT WAY. THIS FARMER – GOT ME INTERESTED IN TALKING ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO WHICH I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT AT THE TIME. I WAS INTO ELECTRONICS BUT NOT AMATEUR RADIO; IT WAS RADIO SERVICING. HE SAYS, “YOU WANT TO GET ON THE AIR,” HE SAYS, “AND WE CAN TALK AND GET A TRANSMITTER GOING.” IT ALL SOUNDED VERY FASCINATING AND INTERESTING. BUT, I’M ON THE FARM, HERE. WE DON’T EVEN HAVE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION. I [SAID], “HOW CAN I EVER DO THAT?” THERE ARE METHODS AND WAYS…YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT. HE FINALLY CONVINCED ME. I [HAD TO] LOOK INTO IT. AND THAT’S WHAT I DID. HE WAS NO HELP BECAUSE HE KNEW NO ELECTRONICS AT ALL BUT I GOT INFORMATION THROUGH BOOKS…AND STARTED STUDYING THE SUBJECT OF AMATEUR RADIO AS A HOBBY. IT BECAME MORE AND MORE FASCINATING, AND MORE RIVETING THE MORE I READ ABOUT IT. [IT SOUNDED] LIKE SOMETHING I [WANTED] TO DO.” “I HAD PREVIOUS ELECTRONIC EXPERIENCE IN TAKING A COURSE WITH THE NATIONAL RADIO INSTITUTE TO BECOME A RADIO SERVICEMAN. I HAD THE BASICS, THE FUNDAMENTALS, AND I KNEW HOW TO DO IT. EVEN THE FIRST TRANSMITTER THAT I BUILT WAS PRETTY SIMPLE, AND THIS [TRANSMITTER] WAS MY FINAL. I HAVE THE MANUAL FOR IT…FROM THE W1AW, THE AMATEUR RADIO RELAY LEAGUE-–THE ENGINEER THAT DESIGNED IT-–AND I BUILT IT FROM THAT, FROM SCRATCH, GETTING ALL THE PARTS TOGETHER. IT WAS A CHALLENGE, VERY ENJOYABLE, BUT REWARDING IN THE END.” “I STARTED TO GET COMPONENTS AND PARTS TOGETHER TO BUILD MY FIRST TRANSMITTER AND MY FIRST RECEIVER. THE CRAZY THING WAS YOU COULD BUILD A POWER SUPPLY AND RUN IT OFF A SIX-VOLT CAR BATTERY. OR [A] TRACTOR BATTERY. THEY WERE ALL SIX-VOLT AT THE TIME; TWELVE VOLTS CAME LATER. I GOT MY VOLTAGES THAT I NEEDED THROUGH THE POWER SUPPLY OFF [THIS] BATTERY. THE NEXT THING I KNOW…I’M [GETTING] SOMEWHERE. THE NEXT THING I KNEW, I GOT INTO IT AND…NOW I GOT IT BUILT AND I CAN’T USE IT. History / Biographical
The Waterton Natural History Association was formed in 1983 in Waterton Lakes National Park (WLNP) as the first co-operating association in Western Canada. As a non-profit association with Parks Canada registered in the Province of Alberta, under the direction of a Board of Directors, its role was to provide and publish materials relevant to Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, provide funds for and execute projects undertaken to enhance WLNP and to sponsor special events and services for the enjoyment and education of the park visitor. The WNHA operated out of the Heritage Centre in the old Fire Hall on Waterton Avenue which was altered to house a museum of natural and cultural history exhibits about the area. The organization sold books, and topographic maps, sponsored natural history related events, workshops and art exhibits and well as providing one-on-one information to the visiting public. Summer employment programs were supported through the hiring of students, seniors, handicapped etc. Membership in the organization was open to all interested parties for a nominal fee. Over time, the WNHA operated the Crooked Creek Campground outside the park and sold plaques for a Cemetery Wall as well as raising funds for its various activities. In February, 2018, the association was formally dissolved at the final annual general meeting.
Custodial History
The documents in this fonds include meeting minutes, corporate documents, and photographs related to the natural history of the park as used in exhibits and programs. History / Biographical
The Chinook Country Tourist Association was a stakeholder-based, not-for-profit organization that supported and inspired tourism by providing stakeholder, marketing, and visitor information services. It was associated with Travel Alberta, and the company was based in Lethbridge. The Chinook Country Tourist Association promoted tourism and travel throughout Southern Alberta. The Chinook Country Tourist Association produced a number of annual publications that are distributed throughout Southern Alberta, including “Alberta South” travel planners and guides, multiple brochures, and maps. They worked to promote the Southern Alberta area to tourists from all over the world. The CCTA had been in Lethbridge for 50 years and operated one of the few year-round visitor centres in Southern Alberta. The Association’s executive director Nikolaus Wyslouzil announced that in March 2019, the Chinook Country Tourist Association would dissolve and cease all operations in Lethbridge.

History / Biographical
GALA/LA was formed in 1991 and incorporated as a Society in 1996. Like many other GLBT groups, GALA’s history relates back to the 80’s and the early days of HIV/AIDS in the gay community, when people started to unite to provide support and share information. GALA provides programs and social networking to a membership of 200 Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Two-Spirited, Queer and Trans-Identified individuals. Services included Peer Support Phone Line, GALA Occasion (monthly newsletter), the website, coffee nights, monthly family potluck dinner gatherings, dances (9 a year), and the pride BBQ. Over the years, GALA has received funding for short term projects such as: Education and Awareness of HIV/AIDS, Outreach to educators and service providers, research in sexuality/sexual activity of men, and a youth program named “Colors”. GALA/LA 1206 - 6 Avenue S, Lethbridge, AB GALA Occasion has been published eight or more times a year for the past fifteen years, featuring news about Lethbridge and from around the world. Three hundred copies are printed for each edition, mailed to members across Canada, and distributed to coffee shops and organizations in Lethbridge and surrounding cities, including Medicine Hat and Calgary. Donor provided the following: "We had people who draw cartoons or write columns for us, publish and advice column, sort of a tongue-in-cheek sort of thing. Not very risque at the time, but that sort of stuff. It was fun. At that was when the newsletters were really the only form of communication... At one time, we had about 250 members and a fair number of those were couples, but we probably had about 200 addresses. And as part of their membership in GALA, they got this mailed to them. There's got to be a record, and these letters or these papers, are the first draft. If nobody's going to record it, then it will be lost."

Trish Purkis Archives Assistant took these images as they were preparing to move from the museum building to the Lethbridge Centre Tower while reconstruction of the museum building was underway. A pictorial view of the Galt Museum before renovations and after. Many areas of the interior are featured such as the gift shop, admin offices, exhibits, design workshop, archives and collections.
