History / Biographical
Lloyd Carefoot was born in Radway, Alberta on March 1, 1932, spending his childhood on a farm in the Weskatenau area. Mr. Carefoot attended agricultural school in Vermillion, Alberta (1950-1952), and at the age of twenty moved to Edgerton, Alberta to work as elevator agent for the Alberta Wheat Pool. In the mid-1950s Mr. Carefoot joined the Life Stock Feed Division of the Swift Canadian Co. and in 1973 he moved to the Poultry Department as a sales representative. In 1979, after the Swift Canadian Co. closed the plant, Mr. Carefoot managed the Co-op Hatchery in Edmonton. In the mid-1980s Mr. Carefoot began a career in real estate (Royal LePage) and he retired in the 1990s. Lloyd Carefoot was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF) – (Lethbridge Chapter) since the 1960s, serving as president twice. Mr. Carefoot was an active volunteer at the Lethbridge Food Bank, where he served on the executive for 23 years. He was involved in fundraising for multiple organizations, including the Canadian Red Cross, the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Canadian Kidney Foundation, the CNIB Canada, the Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre, and the Stirling Railroad Museum Association. On July 4, 2014, Lloyd Carefoot was awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers (Governor General’s Award) for his contributions to the Scouting Movement in Lethbridge. His involvement spanned over 47 years. Lloyd Carefoot is married (Ruth; 1959-) and has two daughters and one son. He resides in Lethbridge, Alberta. Ladies of the Pioneers Pemmican Club
History / Biographical
The Ladies of the Pioneers Pemmican Club are a group of women that meet together to socialize and participate in community outreach programs. The Club was established in 1953. To be a member of the Club, women must be from families that lived in Southern Alberta prior to December 31, 1910. The Club meets together on the first Wednesday of the month to socialize. The Ladies of the Pioneers Pemmican Club is a branch off the men’s Pemmican Club. On 12 December 1894 the Old Timers Association was created (the name has changed multiple times over the years). The purpose of the men’s club was to arrange a New Years’ Eve Club and the planning/work of the association was to be done by people who had arrived in southern Alberta prior to 1886. Throughout the years the Pemmican Club has had the purpose: “to encourage fellowship, entertainment and social enjoyment for the members; to collect and preserve the early history of Lethbridge and southern Alberta; and provide assistance to members and their families through difficult times in their lives”. In the same way, the Ladies of the Pioneers Pemmican Club follow a similar guideline for membership, traditions and charity work. The Ladies have worked many volunteer hours at the Chinook Regional Hospital making dolls for sick children and other programs, and have participated in charities throughout Lethbridge. They also donate generously to various organizations in Southern Alberta, such as animal shelters and Meals on Wheels.

The Lethbridge Musical Theatre grew out of a series of concerts started in 1962 by the Lethbridge Symphony Association. 'Review 62' (later 'Southern Showcase') was a variety show that featured popular music by the symphony orchestra and chorus, as well as performances by other groups and soloists from southern Alberta. The success of the performances sparked discussion about the possibility of staging Broadway musicals, and Lethbridge Musical Theatre (LMT) was formed as an adjunct to the Lethbridge Symphony Association. The association continued until 1968, when LMT became an independent organization Founders of LMT included Albert Rodnunsky, Dick Mells, Gordon Moir, Douglas Card and Ross Whitmore. In the early years of the organization, three people stand out for their creative talents and leadership of LMT: Muriel Jolliffe (choreographer), Dick Mells (producer and director) and Albert Rodnunsky (musical director). Local amateur talent was occasionally supplemented by professional performers brought in for specific shows. In the early years, most of the musicians who accompanied the performances were members of the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. After 1968 however, when LMT became an independent group, more and more of the musicians were recruited from local school band instructors and the students who played in those bands. The Lethbridge Musical Theatre has been a theatre company for the last 50 years. The company has put on yearly shows and other smaller productions since the inception, and they perform mainly at the Yates Memorial Centre.

The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Association (WGIPPA) is an organization within Rotary International comprised mainly of Rotarians from Districts 5360, 5370 and 5390, although any Rotarian in good standing can be a member of the WGIPPA. The WGIPPA continues to promote the peace park concept, and peace among nations generally, through annual assemblies and ceremonies like 'Hands Across the Border'. "The establishing of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is essentially a Rotary project. At the first annual good-will meeting fostered by the Cardston Rotary Club held at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Waterton Lakes Park, on Saturday, July 4th, 1931, between the Rotarians of Alberta and Montana, the following resolution was presented for consideration and carried, unanimously. Moved by Rev Canon S.H. Middleton, Cardston, and seconded by Harry B. Mitchell of Great Falls. 'Whereas one hundred members of the Rotary Clubs, representing the cities of Cardston, Lethbridge and Calgary of Alberta; Great Falls, Kalispell and Missoula of Montana, and Estevan, Saskatchewan, are assembled together attending meeting at the Waterton Lakes National Park; An Whereas, it has been decided that a similar annual meeting be held alternately at Glacier Park, Montana and Waterton National Park, Alberta; Therefore, be it Resolved, that the proper authorities be petitioned to commence negotiations to establish the two parks indictaed as a permanent International Peace Park, which shall be definitely set aside for this laudable purpose. Pledging our loyalty and allegiance to foster all international relationships.' Negotiations were immediately commenced with the local representatives of the Governments concerned, Brig. General J.S. Stewart, C.M.G., D.S.O., M.P. for Alberta, and the Hon. Scott Leavitt for Montana. Bills were duly presented during the 1932 session before the Federal Government, Washington, and the Dominion Government, Ottawa, both Houses working separately and conjointly in their respective spheres, which resulted in the official proclamation that the two parks be henceforth designated as 'the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park'..." THE LETTERING ON THE TOP SAYS “THE MARQUIS HOTEL, LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA, CANADA.” THERE IS AN ABSTRACTED FLORAL DESIGN ON EITHER SIDE OF THIS LETTERING. THE FLOWERS ARE PAINTED RED AND THEIR STEMS PAINTED GREEN. THIS WORDING AND DESIGN REPEATS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. THE LETTERING ON THE BOTTOM SAYS, “MADE IN JAPAN 29.” VERY GOOD CONDITION. USED WITH SOME WEAR APPARENT. BLACK PAINT IS WEARING OFF ON SOME PARTS OF THE SURFACE. SIGNIFICANT WEAR TO THE RED AND GREEN PAINT OF THE DECALS.

ON DECEMBER 16, 2015, DONOR CHRIS MORRISON INFORMED COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN THAT SHE CAME INTO POSSESSION OF THE ASHTRAY WHEN SHE AND HER HUSBAND BECAME STEWARDS OF A WATERTON CABIN IN 1976. THE CABIN, LOCATED AT 103 CAMERON FALLS, WAS OWNED BY HER MOTHER-IN-LAW DOROTHY MORRISON (D. 1995). IT WAS AMONG ASSORTED FURNISHINGS LEFT BEHIND WHEN DOROTHY MOVED OUT AND CHRIS MOVED IN. THE DONOR’S RECOLLECTION OF THE ASHTRAY’S USE IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO IT BECOMING HER PROPERTY WAS AS A CONTAINER. MORRISON SAID, “IT WAS IN A [CABIN] WASHSTAND AND USED TO HOLD LITTLE OBJECTS LIKE ROLLED UP KEROSENE LANTERN TAPE WICKS”. ACCORDING TO MORRISON, IT WAS ALSO KNOWN AS “GRANDPA’S ASHTRAY”. GRANDPA REFERS TO JAMES J. MORRISON OF LETHBRIDGE. “HE ONLY SMOKED CIGARS” SAID THE DONOR, WHEREAS HER MOTHER-IN-LAW DOROTHY DID NOT SMOKE AT ALL. JAMES JACOB MORRISON, DOROTHY’S FATHER-IN-LAW, PASSED ON FEBRUARY 18TH, 1975 AT AGE 93. THE ASHTRAY IS MARKED WITH “MARQUIS HOTEL,” WHICH COULD REFER TO THE LETHBRIDGE HOTEL THAT OPENED IN JUNE 1928. REALIZING A NEED FOR A FIRST-CLASS HOTEL IN LETHBRIDGE, ESPECIALLY ONE WITH A BANQUET HALL, THE BUSINESSMEN OF THE BOARD OF TRADE COMMITTED THEMSELVES TO THE HOTEL IN 1927. AFTER ITS OPENING, THE BOARD OF TRADE WOULD HOLD THEIR REGULAR, NOON-HOUR MEETINGS AT THE HOTEL FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. THE HOTEL CLOSED ITS DOORS IN 1985 AND THE BUILDING WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1988. Mark Campbell was born and raised in Lethbridge, and he attended the radio arts program at Lethbridge College. Actively engaged in the local fine arts community throughout his life, Campbell worked as a radio broadcaster in the 1970s-1980s. He transitioned to television broadcasting in 1993, working for Global Lethbridge. It was while working at the local radio station 1090 CHEC in the early 1980s that Campbell started the Greetergrammers. The Greetergrammers were a group of friends that could be hired to sing and entertain for scheduled groups around town, and perform to unsuspecting individuals. The group could be hired to perform for birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, going-away parties, or any other special occasion that the client would request. The client would contact Mark Campbell and arrange to have their loved one or friend serenaded by the Greetergrammers at a specific time and place. The group would show up at the arranged location, and surprise the individual, and serenade them with a personalized song based off of a famous tune. As the Greetergram performances started to catch on, Mark Campbell kept schedule books of all of their performances, starting from 1984-2010; however, the Fonds are missing the 2004-2009 schedule books. Information contained in the schedule books include the names of the clients arranging the performances, the unsuspecting individual to be serenated, a few personal characteristics of the individual, and where the performance would take place. The Greetergram performances lasted for approximately 36 years, performing to over 20,000 people. Rotary International is an international service organization that operates to bring business and professional people together in order to provide humanitarian services to those peoples, and nations, in need around the world. The Rotary groups are non-political and non-sectarian, and each group is open to all people regardless of race, religion, color, creed, gender or political preference. Rotary International was formed in 1905, in order to better serve the community on a local to global level. Rotarian groups usually gather weekly for breakfast, lunch, or dinner to fulfill the group’s principle of developing friendships and connections in their local area. The Rotary Club of Lethbridge Sunrise was formed in 2001, and meets on Thursday’s at 7 am at the Nord-Bridge Senior's Centre. The Club works to bring local business professionals together to get involved, and help, the local Lethbridge community. Their objective is to: “encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.” As part of the Sunrise club’s commitments to the local and global community, they aim to: “channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.” These Avenues of Service include: Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and Youth Service. One of the global projects that the Lethbridge-Sunrise club became a part of was the Los Amigos Project in 2017. The group heard of the need for a variety of emergency vehicles in Mazatlan, Mexico. In collaboration with the Rotary Clubs in Grande Prairie, the Sunrise Club was able to drive down, and donate, three school buses and emergency supplies to Mazatlan, Mexico. History / Biographical
Hamilton opened in 1950 and was the first junior high school in Lethbridge located on 5th Avenue and 15th Street South. Mr. G. C. Miller was named principle and Mr. George Watson Sr., was named vice principle of the school. In August of 1951 the school was named Hamilton junior high by the board of trustees. This was in honor of Mr .W. A. Hamilton who had been principle of the high school from 1904-1910, he then held the Superintendent position until 1915, and served in the board of trustees in 1921-1924. In 1957 the school was overcrowded and plans were drawn for an expansion of the school. This decision had some backlash and changes to the plans had to be made. In 1959 the Board agreed on the final plans for the addition to the school. The school eventually closed in 2003 and the students were moved to the new junior high school in West Lethbridge (G.S. Lakie). Today the building houses the headquarters of Lethbridge School District 51 and Allan Watson School.

History / Biographical
Donald W. Buchanan was born in 1908 in Lethbridge, Alberta. He was the son of Senator William Ashbury Buchanan, the publisher of the Lethbridge Herald. He studied Modern History at the University of Toronto and Oxford University. In 1934, he received a fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation to train in museum administration. Following his research fellowship, Buchanan founded the National Film Society of Canada, as well as he worked for the Canadian Radio Commission (now the CBC). Buchanan was always involved in the arts and he was a firm believer in making the arts accessible to the public. In 1963, Donald Buchanan, and his brother Hugh, offered many fine works of art to the City of Lethbridge. This became the first significant public art collection ever to exist in Lethbridge. He believed that art was meant to be shared and enjoyed by all. After leaving the Canadian Radio Commission, Buchanan worked for the National Film Board, where he established the stills division; from 1947 until 1960 he was employed by the National Gallery of Canada, serving as director of the Industrial Design Division (1947-1953). His work with the National Industrial Design Committee and the curated the revolutionary exhibition “Design for Use in Canadian Products” (1946) which changed the standards of Canadian art. Donald W. Buchanan served as the Associate Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and took a leave of absence to explore his own artistic endeavors of photography while travelling throughout Europe. Buchanan returned to the Gallery in 1963 as a member of its Board of Trustees, and he became the Director of the International Fine Arts Exhibition at Expo ’67 in Montreal. In the last few years of his life, his friends recall him being busier than ever, organizing the exhibition. He never was able to see the fruits of his labor, however, because of his sudden death in 1966 after being struck by a car in Ottawa. His legacy centered on the accessibility of art to the public and his impact on the art community in Lethbridge.

James "Jimmy" McIntosh was born in 1888 in Brandon, Manitoba and died on November 10, 1961. He was involved with the Grand Trunk Railway from 1907 before joining the Canadian Northern Railway in 1908 as a member of the audit department and would join the Grand Trunk Railway again in 1910 as a clerk in the superintendent's office in Melville, Saskatchewan. He would join the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1911 in Calgary and was transferred to Lethbridge in 1914. He would work with the CPR for 42 years before retiring in 1956. On December 26, 1914 he married Elsie Van Slyke. Elsie was born in 1889 and passed away in 1963. She was the honourary president of the Handicraft Guild in Lethbridge and a member of the Shrine Auxiliary. They were both survived by their daughter Jean. Jean Keys (McIntosh) was also a member of the Handicraft Guild in Lethbridge. Jean passed away on October 20, 1989 and was survived by her two daughters and one son. Her daughter Margaret Oberg is a third generation member of the Handicraft Guild.

The Order of Royal Purple was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in September 1914. Several wives of the Elks created an informal group in 1913 to assist their husbands with benevolent, charitable and social work. In 1914, they became the recognized female auxiliary of the Elks of Canada. The objectives of the Order were to promote the principles of Justice, Charity, Sisterly Love and Fidelity, to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its members or for other purposes. In addition, the Order was to quicken the spirit of women toward a pure and noble citizenship, to promote harmony and good fellowship, to relieve suffering whenever possible and to strive at all times to make “Life sweeter, women better, and the world happier.” The logo was a diamond with an elk head in the center, a clock pointing to 11 o’clock opposite a pansy and the word Canada on the banner. The pansy was the official flower of the Order. The Royal Purple was a very secretive society. They required passwords for every meeting and National Conventions. The Password could only be changed by the Supreme Honored Royal Lady and the Lodges would be notified every 6 months of the password change. The colors of the Order were purple, white and gold. The tassels on their purple pill box hats represents the individual’s status. White tassel means lodge member, white and purple means Honored Royal Lady (or local president), gold for District Deputy, and purple for Supreme Honored Royal Lady (National Leader.) A non-member can be granted honorary memberships for their contributions to the Lodge. Meetings would begin and end with floor work. Each Lodge and District develop their own bylaws and Rules of Order. In 2014 the Supreme Executive of the Order of Royal Purple decided to secede from the Elks and start a new organization, the Canadian Royal Purple Society. Some locals, however, wished to remain with the Elks and these were integrated into the organization of the Elks of Canada as Royal Purple Elks Lodges. Lethbridge Lodge No. 32 was instituted on April 27, 1928 by PSHRL Mattie Lane and 23 ladies were initiated into the Order. Teas, bake sales, craft sales, rummage sales, and bingos have been annual fundraising activities for the lodge. One of their larger projects was to supply an Audiology Unit (a brain stem evoked response audiometer) costing $40,000.00 for the Regional hospital. They also undertook to supply Lifeline Units to the Auxiliary Hospital. The ladies also supported the local Soup Kitchen, local Food Bank, Parents Place, Harbor House for abused women and children, Meals on Wheels, Keep in Touch as well as other charities. The Lodge was also a supporters of the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for children. The Mathesis Club of Lethbridge was organized on 11 September 1912 by a group of nine women who were interested in self education and self improvement during a period in the city’s history when formal educational opportunities for women were very rare. The club name was taken from a Greek word meaning "searcher of knowledge". A committee consisting of Mrs. Alice J. Heeb, Mrs. Cumming and Mrs. Maurine Daniel was appointed to draft a constitution for the new club. The club’s objectives as stated in that constitution included "self-improvement and united effort toward the highest development of home and community". The first officers of the Mathesis Club were Mrs. F. Stoltze (president), Mrs. A. M. Lafferty (vice president), Mrs. Alice J. Heeb (secretary), Mrs. F. Cumming (treasurer). The club was organized into ‘departments’ that reflected the study interests of the members: Music and Art, History and Literature. Members chose topics of interest from these broad categories and then researched, wrote and presented a paper on their topic at the regular meetings. When the club began meetings were held every two weeks, but later the meeting schedule became monthly. In addition to the departmental programs, meetings frequently featured guest speakers who presented on a variety of topics ranging from religion to scientific advances.At the time there was no public library in Lethbridge and the group arranged to borrow thirty books from the collection of McGill University in Montreal which would remain in the home of one of the members for the use of any of those in the group. During the First World War members joined the local Council of Women and Traveler’s Aid to work through those organizations. Fundraising teas and other events were also held. In World War II the club entertained the armed forces for a week. Membership in the club reached a high in 1917 with 87 members, by 2002 the membership had fallen to 20. Over the years, educational and self-improvement programs became widely available for women and the role of the Mathesis Club as a provider of those opportunities was diminished. A declining and aging membership put more and more pressure on the club, until in 2007 the members decided to dissolve the Mathesis Club. The final meeting was held at Luigi’s Restaurant, 1119 Mayor Magrath Drive South, on 19 June 2007.

The records were donated to the Galt Museum by Joan Croskery on behalf of the Mathesis Club. Before their arrival at the Galt the records were unaccounted for for some years before their discovery by Ethel Dunn at the home of a Mr. Kennedy.

IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF 2017, THE MUSIC FRANCHISE HMV CANADA BEGAN TO THE PROCESS OF CLOSING DOWN ALL 120 OF THEIR STORES ACROSS CANADA. AFTER 30 YEARS OF BUSINESS, THE COMPANY WENT INTO RECEIVERSHIP. UPON THE STORE'S CLOSURE THE MUSEUM COLLECTED A LISTENING STATION FROM THE LOCATION. ON FEBRUARY 27, 2017, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN, THE MANAGER OF THE HMV LETHBRIDGE, BRENDAN FRIZZLEY, REFLECTED ON HIS PAST EXPERIENCE AT THE MUSIC STORE, THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MUSIC STORES, AND ON THE RECEIVERSHIP PERIOD. FRIZZLEY COMMENTED ON THE LISTENING STATION, “WELL, I THINK THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT THAT [LISTENING STATION] IS THAT IT GOT MOVED SO THAT THERE WOULD BE ROOM FOR A POSTER RACK, AND I THINK THAT THAT’S SORT OF AN INDICATION OF THE WAY THAT PEOPLE CHANGE, LISTENING TO MUSIC, BECAUSE THE LISTENING STATIONS ARE HUGE. THEY’RE A THING THAT PEOPLE WOULD COME UP TO [AND THEY] WOULDN’T HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT AN ARTIST [THEN] THEY GOT MOVED. I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE SORT OF LIKE 'OH, WHY IS THERE LESS OF [THE STATIONS]?' BECAUSE NOBODY USED THEM ANYMORE. PEOPLE ARE ALREADY STREAMING, OR FAMILIARIZING THEMSELVES WITH ARTISTS IN AN INFINITE NUMBER OF WAYS, AND THE CD STORE IS FOR SORT OF THE END PURCHASE. YOU ALREADY MADE A DECISION AS TO WHAT YOU WANT RATHER THAN THE EXPLORATION SIDE OF IT, WHICH IS NOT HOW PEOPLE DO MUSIC ANYMORE... EVEN THE SUPPLIERS AREN’T AS INVESTED AS GETTING THESE FILLED. IT USED TO BE THAT WE WOULD GET THESE MAIL BOXES, AND IT WOULD BE FULL OF CDS. WE WOULD LOAD THEM UP, AND THEY WOULD SAY, ‘THESE ONES GO HERE AND THESE ONES GO HERE,’ AND THAT’S WHERE ALL THE PICTURES WOULD COME FROM. AND [THEN] THE BOXES GET SMALLER AND SMALLER, AND THE NUMBER OF ARTISTS THAT THEY’RE WORRIED ABOUT PROMOTING THAT WAY BECOMES FEWER AND FEWER. IT’S JUST NOT AN ANGLE THAT THEY NEEDED TO PUSH AN ARTIST ANYMORE. SO, THAT WAS IT. THERE USED TO BE SIX AND, I THINK, BY THE TIME WE’RE DONE THERE WAS THREE THAT WERE BEING CONSTANTLY UPDATED.” ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN 2001 BY STRATEGYONLINE.CA, HMV BEGAN USING LISTENING STATIONS AS A MARKETING STRATEGY IN 1988, ALSO THE YEAR THE RETAILER ARRIVED IN CANADA. FRIZZLEY WORKED AT HMV FOR 8 YEARS. HE EXPLAINED HOW HE BEGAN HIS JOB AT HMV, “I HAD HAD A JOB AT A CALL CENTER THAT HAD BEEN HERE. IT HAD SHUT DOWN, AND I HAD SORT OF GONE OFF ONE DIRECTION, AND STARTED SELLING SPEAKERS. A SORT OF CO-WORKER OF MINE STARTED MANAGING THIS PLACE AND HE WAS COMPLAINING BECAUSE HE COULDN’T FIND AN ASSISTANT MANAGER. IN MY HEAD, I HAD [A] FLASH OF, 'I COULD WORK IN A RECORD STORE,' AND HE JUST HIRED ME. UNFORTUNATELY MY OLD FRIEND [LOST HIS MANAGEMENT JOB]... SOMEBODY IMPORTANT ENOUGH FELT THAT I HAD THE RIGHT SORT OF ATTITUDE FOR THIS, AND SO THEY KEPT ME ON. THEY BROUGHT IN [A FELLOW] FROM THE MEDICINE HAT STORE AND HE ... TURNED THE STORE AROUND AND ... HE GOT PROMOTED TO GO RUN THE STORE AT SOUTH CENTER IN CALGARY, AND THIS BECAME MINE. THAT WAS ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO.” WHEN DISCUSSING THE SHIFT IN SALES FROM THE BEGINNING OF HIS CAREER IN THE MUSIC STORE TO THE CLOSING OF THE FRANCHISE, FRIZZLEY SAID, “I FEEL THAT SHIFT WAS ALREADY OCCURRING WHEN I STARTED. I [HEARD STORIES FROM] EVEN THREE, FOUR YEARS BEFORE I STARTED [WHEN] THEY WOULD PULL ALL THE MANAGERS FROM EVERY HMV INTO A SORT OF PERSONAL CONCERT OF [THE] CANADIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY... THERE WOULD BE THIS MEET-AND-GREET WITH ALL THE EXECUTIVES AND PRIVATE CONCERTS FROM THE TOP ARTISTS. THAT WAS THE IDEA OF WHAT A MUSIC STORE WAS AND HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS TO THE MARKETING OF MUSIC. THE SHIFT THAT WAS STARTING TO HAPPEN ALREADY WAS THIS IDEA THAT THE MUSIC STORE WASN’T RESPONSIBLE FOR MARKETING ANYMORE. IT MAY HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR SELLING [MUSIC], AND I DON’T THINK THAT EVER CHANGED." "PEOPLE ALWAYS WANTED TO TELL ME HOW CDS WERE DYING AND TO AN EXTENT - SURE - BUT NO MORE THAN ANYTHING PHYSICAL. [CDS] STILL HAVE THEIR AUDIENCE, AND THAT WAS TRUE IN 2009 WHEN I STARTED... THERE’S STILL A MARKET FOR THEM... BUT, THE IDEA THAT CD STORES DROVE CUSTOMER’S PURCHASING IS ON THE WAY OUT, AND I THINK THAT THERE WOULD BE LESS PUSH FROM THE LABELS... IN SETTING UP BIG BANNERS [TO MARKET MUSIC]. WHEN I STARTED, MUSICIANS AND THE MUSIC SIDE OF IT HAD PAID FOR THE BANNERS, AND BY THE TIME [OF THE CLOSURE], IT WAS BANNERS FOR MOVIES THAT WE WEREN’T EVEN SELLING. WE WERE THE ‘YOU’VE ALREADY DECIDED WHAT YOU’RE BUYING. COME IN HERE IF YOU ARE BUYING CDS OR RECORDS AND YOU BUY THEM,’ AND THAT’S REALLY DIFFERENT THAN MYSELF, OR ANY OF MY STAFF HERE, CURATING PEOPLE’S MUSIC EXPERIENCE, WHICH I THINK EVERYONE, FROM A CERTAIN AGE, HAS HAD THAT EXPERIENCE OF GOING TO A RECORD STORE, AND A RECORD STORE EMPLOYEE TELLING THEM WHAT TO LISTEN TO... I THINK THAT THAT DIED WELL BEFORE I WAS HERE, BUT I THINK THE LABEL SLOWLY RESPONDED TO THE FACT THAT THAT WAS JUST REALITY. THE LISTENING POST IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THAT SORT OF LIMPING OUT FROM THAT SORT OF EXPERIENCE, WHERE A MUSIC STORE DEFINED WHAT PEOPLE WERE LISTENING TO - AS MUCH AS A RADIO STATION DID - TO JUST A PLACE WHERE YOU BOUGHT MUSIC…" "I THINK THE NATURE OF PEOPLE’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MUSIC STORE IS REALLY DIFFERENT AND SO PEOPLE WOULD GET VERY PERSONALLY OFFENDED AS THE CHANGES HAPPENED. AND, FOR ME, I ALWAYS KEPT IN MY MIND THAT THE STORE, NO MATTER WHAT THE CHANGES HAPPENED - THE TOYS AND ALL THAT OTHER STUFF - FACILITATED ME BEING ABLE TO HAVE A CD SELECTION; FACILITATED THE ABILITY FOR ME TO SAY, 'HEY, YOU SHOULD CHECK THIS OUT. I DON’T EVEN CARRY IT IN THE STORE, BUT I CAN ORDER IT FOR YOU, AND YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT.' SO, AS THE SHIFT STARTED TO HAPPEN, WE PULLED BACK FROM CDS A LITTLE BIT, ESPECIALLY IN THE GENRES THAT JUST STOPPED SELLING, AND THAT SORT OF HAPPENED SLOWLY.” FRIZZLEY RECALLS THE EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE LEADING UP TO AND AFTER THE COMPANY ANNOUNCED IT HAD WENT INTO RECEIVERSHIP. WHEN ASKED IF HE HAD ANY INDICATION THAT HIS STORE - ALONG WITH EVERY HMV STORE IN CANADA - WOULD BE CLOSING, FRIZZLEY ANSWERED, “NONE WHATSOEVER. IT WAS A SLOWER CHRISTMAS FROM A MALL PERSPECTIVE. IT’S DIFFICULT BECAUSE CORPORATE FINANCIALS ARE VERY DIFFERENT THAN STORE FINANCIALS. BUT WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT MY NUMBERS IT WAS CERTAINLY A STORE THAT COULD’VE CONTINUED TO HAVE RUN. THERE WAS NO INDICATION WHATSOEVER. THERE WAS SOME SLIGHT BUYING DIFFERENCES, AS IN THE PRODUCT THAT WAS COMING [INTO] THE STORE. LOOKING BACK ON IT NOW, IT WAS PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE DETERIORATING RELATIONSHIPS WE HAD WITH OUR SUPPLIERS. BUT IT WAS ANOTHER PROFITABLE YEAR FOR ME. I MEAN, EVERY YEAR THAT I’VE RUN THIS STORE, I’VE BEEN IN TOP FIVE MOST PROFITABLE STORES IN TERMS OF A PERCENTAGE OF EVERY DOLLAR THAT COMES IN - WHAT BECOMES PROFIT... IF YOU LOOK AT THE CONDITIONS THAT RESULTED IN US CEASING TO EXIST, IT’S A SPECIFIC WAY THAT IT CAME ABOUT. [FROM] THE RESTRUCTURING TO THE PURCHASE [OF THE COMPANY] BACK IN 2011 WHEN WE ACTUALLY ALL THOUGHT THAT WE WERE ALL LOSING OUR JOBS… [HMV WAS] HEMORRHAGING MONEY FOR A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT REASONS. THE CANADIAN ARM WAS NOT DOING PARTICULARLY WELL EITHER, AND THEY NEEDED CASH TO PROVE TO THE BANK THAT [IT COULD] REPAY [ITS] DEBTS. THEY HAD ENOUGH SALES; THEY HAD ENOUGH BUSINESS; EVERYTHING WAS FINE, EXCEPT THEY DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH CASH ON HAND – SO THEY JUST NEEDED TO HAVE MONEY IN AN ACCOUNT SOMEWHERE. SO, THEY SOLD HMV CANADA OFF FOR BASICALLY A SONG, TO THIS COMPANY CALLED HILCO. HILCO IS A RESTRUCTURING COMPANY... THEY ARE SO GOOD AT LIQUIDATING COMPANIES, THAT THEY, ODDLY, BECAME RIGHT DOWN THE CHAIN SOME WAYS, AND STARTED THEIR WORK TO DO IT… THIS COMPANY BOUGHT US IN 2011. [WE THOUGHT,] 'THAT’S THE END OF US – THEY ARE GOING TO LIQUIDATE US, AND THAT WILL BE THAT.' WE HAD SOME VERY PASSIONATE PEOPLE INVOLVED, AND THEY PITCHED THIS IDEA AS TO WHAT HMV COULD BE AND THAT WAS TO HAVE THE VIDEO GAME SIDE OF IT AND THE MERCHANDISE STUFF. AND WE DID IT. IT DID PHENOMENAL FOR US… WE ALSO WORKED WITH ALL THE SUPPLIERS TO GET BETTER MARGINS; SO, IN FACT, A CD COST $10.00, INSTEAD OF THE $20.00 IT TRADITIONALLY DID, WHEN I STARTED HERE. THAT’S A THING THAT THEY SORT OF NEGOTIATED IN WITH OUR SUPPLIERS." REMEMBERING THE DAY THAT FRIZZLEY LEARNED THE NEWS OF THE COMPANY’S CLOSURE, HE SAID, “SO, I WOKE UP AND CHECKED MY PHONE, AND I SEE THAT I AM REMOVED FROM BEING AN ADMINISTRATOR ON THE STORE’S FACEBOOK PAGE. I’M SORT OF THROWN BY THAT. I DON’T POST A LOT ON THE STORE’S FACEBOOK PAGE, BUT WHEN I DO THERE’S SOME JOKES IN THERE AND I SHOW OFF THE NEW STUFF. I POSTED SOMETHING ON THERE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A WHILE, AND I GOT A LOT OF LIKES AND SHARES, AND IT’S ALL GOOD... I WAKE UP, AND I’M NOT THE ADMINISTRATOR ON THAT PAGE ANYMORE… I’M SORT OF THROWN BY THAT, AND I’M LIKE, 'WHY WOULD THEY EVER MOVE ME? ARE THEY GETTING RID OF ALL OF THESE?” I LOOK, 'NO, THE PAGE IS STILL THERE.' SEEMS STRANGE. IT OCCURS TO ME THAT MAYBE SOMEBODY DIDN’T GET THE JOKE THAT I MADE, FROM HEAD OFFICE OR SOMETHING… AND, SO I AM CONFUSED. I’M THINKING I MAY HAVE TO ARGUE WITH SOME SORT OF HEAD OFFICE PERSON WHEN I COME TO WORK THAT AFTERNOON. SO I COME IN AND JOHN TELLS ME THAT 'SHIT’S HIT THE FAN.' THERE’S A LOT OF PARTS EVERYONE WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON TO EVERYONE ELSE, AS TO THINGS LIKE SEVERANCES, BONUSES, AND THINGS LIKE THAT. A: HANDMADE DOLL. THE “ESKIMO” DOLL IS MADE WITH LIGHT BLUE, FELT-LIKE FABRIC WITH WHITE FABRIC ACCENTS. THE FACE IS MADE OUT OF A LIGHTER FABRIC THAT IS PEACH-COLOURED. THE FACIAL DETAILS ARE HAND PAINTED. THE DOLL HAS BLUE EYES, EYEBROWS, NOSTRILS, RED LIPS, AND ROSY CHEEKS. THE LIGHT BLUE FABRIC THAT MAKES UP THE MAJORITY OF THE DOLL’S BODY IS ENCOMPASSING THE DOLL’S FACE LIKE A HOOD. THE DOLL’S TORSO IS COVERED IN THE LIGHT BLUE FELT. TWO HEART-SHAPED ARMS, MADE OF THE SAME MATERIAL, ARE ATTACHED TO EITHER SIDE OF THE BODY. THE DOLLS UPPER LEG AND FEET ARE COVERED IN THE LIGHT BLUE FELT. FROM THE KNEES TO THE ANKLES, A LIGHTER, WHITE FABRIC IS COVERING THE LEGS. B: DOLL SKIRT. AROUND THE DOLL’S WAIST IS A DETACHABLE SKIRT MADE OF THE SAME FABRIC AND A WHITE WAISTBAND. POOR CONDITION. ALL FABRIC IS WELL-WORN AND THREADBARE IN MULTIPLE PLACES. THE DOLL’S RED STUFFING IS VISIBLE THROUGH PARTS OF THE FABRIC. THERE IS DISCOLORATION (YELLOWING) OVERALL. THE STUFFING IS NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE DOLL. THE SEAMS AT THE ARMS ARE FRAGILE. THE PAINT FOR THE DOLL’S FACE IS SEVERELY FADED.

ON DECEMBER 21, 2018, GALT MUSEUM CURATOR AIMEE BENOIT INTERVIWED KEVIN MACLEAN REAGARDING HIS DONATION OF PERSONAL OBJECTS. ON THE SLURPEE CUP, MACLEAN RECALLED, “I WAS IN THE RESERVES AT THE TIME WHEN [THE] HALO CUPS CAME OUT, SO I’M PRETTY SURE THAT THEY WOULD DATE TO ABOUT 2001 AND 2002. UP UNTIL THAT POINT I WOULD BE USING DISPOSABLE CUPS. I HAD A 7-ELEVEN…WHEN WE LIVED IN THE 300 BLOCK OF 15TH STREET FOR 10 YEARS, THERE WAS A 7-ELEVEN A BLOCK AWAY FROM MY HOUSE. LATER IT WOULD BE ON MAYOR MAGRATH DRIVE…BY THE SANDMAN IS WHERE I WOULD HAVE GOT THE HALO CUPS. WHAT I DID [IS] I BOUGHT A NUMBER OF THOSE CUPS SO I COULD HAVE HAD AS MANY AS 15 TO 20 OF THEM AND THEN I WOULD HAVE A CUP DISPENSER. I REMEMBER EATING SOFT TACOS WITH MEXI-FRIES AND THEN FOR SURE GOING TO 7-ELEVEN AND HAVING A GRAVEYARD SLURPEE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.” “[A GRAVEYARD SLURPEE IS] ORANGE CRUSH MIXED WITH COKE AND ROOT BEER. IT’S A WHOLE BUNCH OF FLAVORS MIXED IN ONE AND I THOUGHT IT WAS THE COOLEST THING. I DON’T KNOW IF IT WAS THE TEXTURE IN MY MOUTH OR IF IT WAS THE TEMPERATURE BUT IT RESONATED WITH ME IN A BIG WAY.” “I POTENTIALLY WOULD DRINK MULTIPLE SLURPEES PER DAY AND THE SLURPEES ARE NOT ALL THE SAME. DEPENDING ON WHEN YOU GO, THE QUALITY OF THE SLURPEE IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT. YOU HAVE A BAD SLURPEE EXPERIENCE, YOU MIGHT DECIDE NOT TO DRINK THE WHOLE THING AND THEN WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO IS GO BACK IN FOUR HOURS AND TRY AGAIN. OR YOU COULD HAVE A REALLY GOOD SLURPEE EXPERIENCE AND YOU WOULD GO BACK AND TRY AGAIN. BUT THERE WOULD BE THINGS LIKE, IF I WALKED INTO THE STORE AND SOMEONE WAS IN FRONT OF ME AND THEY HAPPENED TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE LARGE THERMOS [CUPS], THAT COULD HOLD THE EQUIVALENT OF 4 OR 5 OF [MINE]…THEY WOULD DESTROY THE CONSISTENCY OF THE SLURPEE. IF THEY’RE IN FRONT OF ME, I’D BE GETTING REALLY ANGRY AT THEM OVER A SLURPEE WHICH ISN’T GOOD AT ALL. IT WAS TO THE POINT WHERE I COULD WALK IN THE FRONT DOORS AND I COULD LOOK AT THE MACHINE, WHICH WOULD BE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROOM AND TELL, JUST BY THE COLOUR AND HOW QUICKLY THAT PADDLE WAS GOING AROUND, HOW GOOD THAT SLURPEE WAS GOING TO BE. I WOULD TURN AROUND AND WALK OUT IF IT WAS MOVING RELATIVELY QUICK AND IT WAS REALLY DARK. SO I KNEW. THAT’S A PROBLEM AND…POTENTIALLY MY BLOOD PRESSURE WOULD CHANGE WHEN I’M DISPENSING THE SLURPEE BECAUSE I’M SO EXCITED TO GET IT. A LOT OF WHAT WE DO AS HUMAN BEINGS IS ABOUT RITUAL AND IT’S NOT EVEN REALLY ABOUT THE SLURPEE ITSELF BUT THAT, AT A CERTAIN POINT OF THE DAY, WE DO THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD. FOR ME, IT WAS AT LUNCH TIME, DRIVING FROM MY HOUSE TO GO GET THAT SLURPEE TO BRING IT BACK TO WORK, WHICH IS A TREMENDOUS WASTE OF TIME. AND FOR WHAT? EXCEPT THAT, I REALLY DID LIKE DRINKING SLURPEES. I REALLY LIKED THE SUGAR RUSH A LOT. IT GAVE ME A LOT OF ENERGY AND I DON’T KNOW IF I HAVE THAT ANY MORE. I NEVER CRASHED AFTER I DRANK THEM. I SAID “IT WAS LIKE I PARACHUTED BACK TO EARTH”. I LOVED THEM LOTS.” “[I STOPPED DRINKING SLURPEES] AROUND [2011/2012]. THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE WAS OFFERING A HEALTH CHECK-UP WHICH WAS REALLY GOOD. I WENT AND THEY MEASURED MY BLOOD SUGAR WHICH WAS HIGH NORMAL. IT WASN’T OUTSIDE NORMAL, BUT IT WAS HIGH NORMAL AND THEY WERE RECOMMENDING TO ME…THAT PERHAPS I SHOULDN’T BE DRINKING SUGAR EVERY DAY. AND ME KNOWING THAT PANCREATIC CANCER IS SOMETHING THAT COULD BE RELATED TO SUGAR CONSUMPTION, I JUST KNEW THAT THERE WAS REALLY NO GOOD REASON FOR ME TO BE DRINKING THOSE STUPID THINGS AS PART OF MY DAY TO DAY EXISTENCE.” “I CUT THEM OUT. Through the Canadian Army Officer Training Corps, he attended the University of Alberta, graduating in 1948 with a Doctorate of Dentistry and a Queen’s Commission at the rank of Captain. On a Canadian Eastman Fellowship, he completed postgraduate training in Orthodontics at the University of Rochester from 1948-50. He returned to Lethbridge initially to practice general dentistry with Dr. JS Stewart, later establishing his own Orthodontics practice of 37 years. Van Christou was actively engaged in civic affairs with imagination and wisdom. His vision for accessible liberal arts education was realized in 1967 with the establishment of the University of Lethbridge. He had a mind full of ideas, many of which came to fruition through the sixty years he spent engaged with community affairs. His passion for the arts shaped the character of Lethbridge in many ways including the establishment of the Allied Arts Council, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, the Yates Centre, and the University art collection. His enthusiasm was palpable, his energy unremitting, and his contributions leave this community considerably enhanced. He was honoured by the Blackfoot Nation, who named him “iihhiowdoomoo” (Lead Buffalo). He deeply respected the values of the Blackfoot Nation and took great pride in this honour. Dr. Christou passed away September 27, 2017.
