History / Biographical
CFAC was a private Canadian television station in Lethbridge. It was originally associated with CBC Television. On September 1, 1975 CFAC TV broke away from the CBC and became an independent station. In 1976, CFAC changed to the label CFAC-TV-7. The station was branded to match its sister station in Calgary, and it adopted the nickname “2 & 7 Lethbridge Television”. Due to increased viewership, in 1988 the station was able to begin carrying some of Global TV’s entertainment programs. In 1990, the station was sold to Western International Communications where CFAC was changed to CISA-TV label. The current association for the station is with Global and the station is commonly known as Global Lethbridge. Local programming was consistently an important part of CFAC TV. It broadcasted successful shows such as “Kids Belong Together” and “Key to Literacy” where both shows won the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Gold Ribbon Award for community involvement.

History / Biographical
The Indigenous Studies Department at the University of Lethbridge was first created in 1975, by Sociology professor, Dr. Menno Boldt, Indigenous scholars Dr. Leroy Little Bear, artist/scholar Dr. Alfred Young Man, Blackfoot linguistics scholar Dr. Don Frantz and other academics looking to bring Indigenous perspectives to the University campus. In the initial years of their search for funding for the department, Dr. Boldt, Dr. Little Bear and their fellow academics, spoke with Indigenous groups throughout Alberta, including the Indian Association of Alberta (I.A.A.). These groups stressed that having a Native American Studies Department at the University of Lethbridge meant that the Department had to distinguish itself from other disciplines by promoting Indigenous ways of learning, knowing and teaching. Originally named the Native American Studies department, the current Indigenous Studies Department first gained their funding from the Department of Advanced Education in Edmonton, which facilitated the recognition of the Native American Studies degree at the University of Lethbridge as incorporating unique perspectives at a University institution. The founders of the Department built the Department as one rooted in student outreach and support, education from Indigenous perspectives, and to emphasize the importance of understanding Indigenous histories in Canada. As a result of their discussions with Indigenous communities throughout Alberta, the Department founders structured core sets of disciplinary areas that focused on art, law, philosophy, health, politics, history, gender studies, ecology, business, customs and language; the Department was historically structured as a multidisciplinary department that offered students an enriched understanding of the holistic experience of Indigenous Peoples from Indigenous perspectives. It was the connection to Indigenous communities and the attention to Indigenous perspectives that made the Native American Studies degree one of the most sought-after programs of its kind in Canada. As a Department that is unique and ever-evolving, the Department now highlights a more globally-connected/focused faculty and curriculum to meet the current needs of students and Indigenous communities. That adjustment is reflected in the name change and the vision that currently drives the Department: "Indigenous Studies at the University of Lethbridge is dedicated to community-engaged scholarship, and research of the priorities and aspirations of Indigenous peoples in Canada and throughout the world. Within the department, Indigenous and non-Indigenous students have the opportunity to learn and think about Indigenous knowledges in creative, transformative and critical ways. The Department offers courses that engender a rigorous and respectful understanding of Indigenous peoples’ languages, knowledges, cultures, histories, politics, arts, intellectual traditions, and research methodologies." Note: This description was supplied by the Indigenous Studies Department at the University of Lethbridge.

History / Biographical
Donald W. Buchanan was born in 1908 in Lethbridge, Alberta. He was the son of Senator William Ashbury Buchanan, the publisher of the Lethbridge Herald. He studied Modern History at the University of Toronto and Oxford University. In 1934, he received a fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation to train in museum administration. Following his research fellowship, Buchanan founded the National Film Society of Canada, as well as he worked for the Canadian Radio Commission (now the CBC). Buchanan was always involved in the arts and he was a firm believer in making the arts accessible to the public. In 1963, Donald Buchanan, and his brother Hugh, offered many fine works of art to the City of Lethbridge. This became the first significant public art collection ever to exist in Lethbridge. He believed that art was meant to be shared and enjoyed by all. After leaving the Canadian Radio Commission, Buchanan worked for the National Film Board, where he established the stills division; from 1947 until 1960 he was employed by the National Gallery of Canada, serving as director of the Industrial Design Division (1947-1953). His work with the National Industrial Design Committee and the curated the revolutionary exhibition “Design for Use in Canadian Products” (1946) which changed the standards of Canadian art. Donald W. Buchanan served as the Associate Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and took a leave of absence to explore his own artistic endeavors of photography while travelling throughout Europe. Buchanan returned to the Gallery in 1963 as a member of its Board of Trustees, and he became the Director of the International Fine Arts Exhibition at Expo ’67 in Montreal. In the last few years of his life, his friends recall him being busier than ever, organizing the exhibition. He never was able to see the fruits of his labor, however, because of his sudden death in 1966 after being struck by a car in Ottawa. His legacy centered on the accessibility of art to the public and his impact on the art community in Lethbridge.

History / Biographical
Personal files of Senator Joyce Fairbairn reflecting her work as a Senator and Cabinet Minister in various community projects in Southwest Alberta. Senator Fairbairn, the first woman Senator from the Lethbridge area, has been involved in the Southern Albertan community all of her life and has contributed time, money, and love to many causes, organizations, and celebrations in Southern Alberta and Canada. Joyce Fairbairn was born at the Galt Hospital on November 6, 1939. She grew up in Lethbridge where she got her first experience as a journalist at the Lethbridge Herald while she was still in High School. Fairbairn earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Alberta in 1960. Fairbairn then left Lethbridge to attend Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario where she earned a Bachelor of Journalism in 1961. After graduation, Fairbairn began working for the Herald’s Ottawa Bureau, the Ottawa Journal, and United Press International in the Parliamentary Press Gallery. Fairbairn was known as one of the first “female newsmen.” She worked as a journalist in Ottawa from 1961-1970 and was the first journalist to report on the new Canadian flag selection as well as covered Jackie Kennedy and President Kennedy’s visit to Ottawa in 1961. The Lethbridge Herald proudly continued to publish her work from 1965-1969. In 1970 Fairbairn became the Legislative Assistant and, later, the Communications Coordinator for Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Fairbairn worked with Trudeau until 1984 when she was appointed to the Senate. After Fairbairn was appointed to the Senate in 1984 it quickly became clear that she would not be limited to the Red Chamber. Senator Fairbairn quickly became known for attending Southern Albertan milestones, openings, celebrations, and even the occasional cake decorating contest. Senator Fairbairn became well known throughout Southern Alberta because, as one constituent commented, “she cared enough to come”. Senator Fairbairn also became involved with many organizations and causes such as, the Paralympics, the Calgary Stampede, Books for Babies, and the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre. Fairbairn was present for celebrations in Southern Alberta such as, Lethbridge’s Centennial Celebration, Whoop Up Days, and many University of Lethbridge Convocations. Senator Fairbairn was also an active member of the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association where she adopted a horse named “Dooley”. In 2008 the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association honoured Senator Fairbairn with a lifetime membership. Senator Fairbairn’s devotion to Canada and the Southern Albertan community was also recognized by many other organizations. In 1990 she was inaugurated into the Kainai Chieftainship, where she received the name Chief Morning Bird Woman. Fairbairn was also made an Honourary Colonel of the 18th Air Defense Regiment, RCA. She was also made a Honourary Air Marshal and frequently attended the International Air Show at Lethbridge, Alberta. In addition, she was awarded with a Honourary Doctorate of Law by the University of Lethbridge in 2003. While Fairbairn was known for being present in the Southern Albertan community she was also known for her many accomplishments in Parliament. Her career as Senator began as the Vice-Chair of the National Liberal Caucus and the Western and Northern Liberal Caucus until 1991 when she was appointed Co-Chair of the National Campaign Committee. By 1993 Senator Fairbairn was appointed to Privy Council as the first woman to hold the position of Leader of Government. She also became the first Minister with Special Responsibility for Literacy. In 1997 she was appointed the Special Advisor on Literacy to the Minister of Human Resources Development Canada. In addition, Senator Fairbairn was the driving force behind making the Famous Five Honourary Senators and erecting a honourary statue celebrating the Famous Five on Parliament Hill. Senator Fairbairn retired from the Senate on January 18, 2013.
