History / Biographical
A collection of 60 photographs from the Stafford family from approximately 1882-1920. The collection contains photographs depicting the first mines in Lethbridge, the first traffic bridge over the Oldman River, Stafford family members, and the Stafford ranch. One of the first families in what is now Lethbridge, William Stafford came west from Nova Scotia in 1882 to become the first manager and superintendent of the North Western Coal and Navigation Company. A year later W. Stafford had returned to Nova Scotia, and brought his family back west. The Staffords had a large family, nine boys and four girls: William Stafford Jr., Henry Stafford, John Stafford, Agnes Stafford (died as an infant), Richard Hill Stafford, Agnes Stafford, Alexander Boswell Stafford, George Stafford, Margaret Jane Stafford, David Gibb Stafford, James Walter Stafford, Henrietta Stafford (died as an infant), Elliott Torrence Stafford and Annie Laurie Stafford. After managing several mines, in 1894 Stafford stepped down and became inspector of the mines. By this time he had become interested in ranching and later resigned from the company to follow that pursuit. At this time Stafford built a spacious ranch house in the riverbottom, which became a community and social center, north of the present Lethbridge highway bridge. To provide accommodation for the increasing number of miners, Stafford purchased and subdivided plots for miners’ houses which became known as Staffordville, which is now part of North Lethbridge. After Stafford's death in 1907, and the flood of 1908, the family moved to the city on the [southeast] corner of 3rd Avenue and 13th Street South where the current credit union bank is located.
