SHE EXTRACTED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THE ING FAMILY FROM PERMANENT FILE P19950073001, WHICH CONTAINS A TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW COLLECTIONS TECH KEVIN MACLEAN CONDUCTED WITH HAROLD ING JR., SON OF HAROLD AND MYRA, IN HIS ROOM AT THE LETHBRIDGE HOTEL IN SEPTEMBER 2005. MYRA WAS BORN IN GOLDEN B.C. TO SHIN-BOW AND CHOW TING RAH; HER FATHER ORGINALLY EMIGRATED TO CANADA TO WORK ON CANADIAN RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION AND LATER BECAME A RESTAURANTEUR, WHERE MYRA DEVELOPED HER ENGLISH SKILLS AS A WAITRESS. MANY OF THE ITEMS DATE BACK TO THE EARLY 1900'S, WHILE OTHERS ARE MODERN AND DATE TO THE 1980'S. DONOR'S PARENTS MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1952. MRS. EVDOKIMOFF DIED IN 1986 AT THE AGE OF 84 YEARS OLD. *UPDATE* NICOLE HEMBROFF, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT, MET WITH DONOR WALLY EVDOKIMOFF IN 2010 TO DISCUSS HIS DONATION OF THE TRUNK AND ITS CONTENTS. SEE BELOW. ACCORDING TO EVDOKIMOFF, THE LACE AND THE FABRIC OF THE PILLOWCASES WAS LIKELY HAND MADE BY HIS MOTHER. MANS NAVY BLUE LINEN 3/4 LENGTH WINTER COAT LINED WITH VARIOUS SIZED PIECES OF SHEEPSKIN. COAT HAS FULL TRAPEZE STYLE BODY WITH CROSS OVER FLAP IN FRONT WITH ONLY 1 BUTTON AT THE COLLAR TO FASTEN. HAS BLACK STRIP OF VELVET DOWN FRONT OF COAT AND AROUND CUFFS. ALSO HAS VERY LONG SLEEVES. SOME OF THE SEAMS ON THE COAT ARE WEAK, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE COLLAR, MAKING IT SLIGHTLY DELICATE. ALSO, COAT HAS A VERY STRONG ODOR.

ACCORDING TO DONOR THE CIRCULAR SHAPED SKIRT OF THE COAT WAS TYPICAL OF GEORGIA REGION DURING THE MID 1800'S. *UPDATE* IN 2017 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT RUTHANN LABLANCE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF CLOTHING, INCLUDING SHEEPSKIN COAT DONATED BY VERA MALOFF. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED USING ARTICLES FROM THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. VERA MALOFF (NEE TOMELIN) WAS BORN IN SASKATOON, SK ON NOVEMBER 24, 1915. SHE WAS MARRIED TO JOHN MALOFF IN 1936. THE COUPLE LIVED IN COWLEY, AB UNTIL RETIRING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1976. VERA PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 89 ON AUGUST 27, 2005. JOHN MALOFF WAS BORN IN BRILLIANT, BC ON NOVEMBER 21, 1914, THE SON OF GEORGE AND DORA MALOFF (NEE KASAHOFF). HE MOVED TO COWLEY, AB IN 1919 WITH HIS FAMILY. PAIR OF MEN'S BEIGE WOOL PANTS WITH A BUTTON FLY, AND A HALF OF A STEEL CLIP AT THE TOP TO FASTEN. OTHER PIECE OF CLIP IS MISSING BUT FABRIC HAS RUST ON THE AREA WHERE IT ONCE WAS SEWN. WAISTBAND IS HIGH IN THE BACK WITH A DIP IN THE MIDDLE, AND HAS 2 WHITE PLASTIC-LIKE BUTTONS ON EACH SIDE OF FRONT NEAR SIDE POCKETS, AND 1 BUTTON ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BACK TO ATTACH SUSPENDERS TO. HAS NO REAR POCKETS. SECOND PIECE IS A 102 CM LONG MATCHING SINGLE SUSPENDER STRAP,WITH A BUTTON ON EACH END. SOME OF THE SEAMS ON THE INSIDE OF THE PANTS ARE FRAYING, AND FRONT IS STAINED.

MICHAEL IS WEARING A BLUE TUNIC AND RED CLOAK WITH WINGS BEHIND. SWORD IN HIS RIGHT HAND IS READY TO STRIKE. IN LEFT ARE THE CHAINS WHICH HOLD SATAN. SATAN IS BEARDED FIGURE BENEATH MICHAEL'S LEFT FOOT AND HAS SERPENTINE BODY. BRASS PLAQUE 15.2 X 2.5CM IN SIZE IS RIVETED TO BOTTOM OF FRAME AND HAS "ST. MICHAEL, ARCHANGEL" ENGRAVED ON IT. BACK OF PAINTING IS UNFINISHED PLYWOOD. ON BACK AT MIDDLE LEFT IS "ST. MICHAEl TAKEN FROM FRONT ENTRANCE MAY 14/85" HAND PRINTED IN PENCIL. CANVAS IS WARPED AND BUBBLED SLIGHTLY.

SISTER AGNES BEATON OF THE SISTERS OF ST. MARTHA RELATES THAT THE PAINTING'S HISTORY (UNCONFIRMED) WAS PASSED ON TO HER BY DR. JOHN MORGAN M.D. OF LETHBRIDGE. THE PAINTING IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN BROUGHT WEST BY FATHER LACOMBE FROM A MONESTARY IN QUEBEC WHERE IT HAD BEEN FOR PERHAPS MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED YEARS. FATHER LACOMBE BROUGHT IT TO HIS MISSION IN NORTHERN ALBERTA AND WHEN HE DIED THE PAINTING WAS GIVEN TO THE OBLATE PARISH OF ST. PATRICK'S IN LETHBRIDGE. THE PAINTING WAS THEN GIVEN TO THE SISTERS OF ST. MARTHA FOR ST. MICHAEL'S HOSPITAL. IT HUNG IN VARIOUS PLACES AROUND THE HOSPITAL, MOST RECENTLY IN THE ENTRANCE WAY ON THE SOUTH SIDE. IT WAS TAKEN DOWN IN 1985 AND PUT INTO STORAGE. IT SURFACED AGAIN IN 1992 WHEN SISTER AGNES HUNG IT FOR THE FEAST OF ST. MICHAEL AND IT STAYED UP UNTIL THE HOSPITAL CLOSED IN 1995. BROWN WOODEN HARMONICA WITH A STAINLESS STEEL PLATE ON THE TOP MARKED "HOHNER'S BEST HAMMERED REEDS", AND ON THE BOTTOM "M. HOHNER TRADEMARK MADE IN GERMANY PARIS 1900 CHICAGO 1893". ENDS HAVE A DESIGN CARVED INTO THE END AND ARE FILLED WITH GOLD COLOURED PAINT. STEEL PLATES HAVE VENTS ON BOTH ENDS, AND ON BOTH SIDES OF THE PIECE. SURFACE, ESPECIALLY CORNERS ARE WORN AND CRACKED, AND STEEL PLATES ARE BENT.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT JACK PATEY, THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS HARMONICA, WAS FOUND IN LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM 1934, 1950, 1978, AND 1986. ARTHUR JOHN SAMUEL 'JACK' PATEY WAS BORN IN WORCHESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND IN 1904, AND IMMIGRATED TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF EIGHT. PATEY WAS A MUSICIAN AND SIGN PAINTER. HE OPERATED THE ART SIGN COMPANY IN LETHBRIDGE FROM 1931 TO 1978, WHEN THE BUSINESS WAS TAKEN OVER BY HIS SON, JACK JR. PATEY PLAYED IN AND LEAD MANY SOUTHERN ALBERTA BANDS FOR OVER 60 YEARS, INCLUDING THE KING'S KANADIANS, JACK PATEY TRIO, THREE HITS AND A MISS, THE SATELLITES, PLINK, PLUNK AND THE PROFESSOR, AND THE OLD GUYS. HER MOTHER, FANNY (NEE MAUGHAM) PASSED AWAY WHEN EDITH WAS A YOUNG GIRL AND HER FATHER REMARRIED. THE STORY, FROM SECOND HAND SOURCES, WAS THAT SHE AND HER STEP MOTHER DID NOT LIKE ONE ANOTHER. THIS PROVIDED TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE BECAUSE KIRK WAS SENT AWAY TO STUDY ART AND SHE STUDIED IN SOUTH KENSINGTON, LONDON, AND PARIS. DURING HER SUMMERS SHE JOINED ARTIST'S COLONIES IN CORNWALL, WALES, AND YORKSHIRE. KIRK WROTE OF IMPRESSIONIST PAUL CEZANNE BEING HER "MODEL AND INSPIRATION" AND SHE GREATLY ADMIRED ROMANTIC ARTIST JOHN SELL COTMAN. KIRK NEVER MARRIED AND IMMIGRATED TO CANADA AT THE AGE OF 46. SHE ARRIVED IN HALIFAX ABOARD THE HMS CANADA IN APRIL 1905. THE PASSENGER LIST INDICATED SHE WAS TRAVELING ON TO VANCOUVER AND HER OCCUPATION WAS LISTED AS A GOVERNESS. IT SEEMS SHE DIDN'T STAY LONG IN VANCOUVER BUT SOON TRAVELLED TO ATLIN, B.C. TO GET TO ATLIN, KIRK WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SHIP TO SKAGWAY, THE WHITE PASS RAILWAY TO CARCROSS AND THEN AN OVERLAND AND BOAT TRIP TO ATLIN. IT IS A MYSTERY WHY SHE CHOSE TO GO TO A REMOTE GOLD RUSH TOWN IN NORTH WESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA. BY 1911 KIRK IS BOARDING WITH THE WOODS FAMILY IN LILLOOET, B.C. NORTHWEST OF KAMLOOPS, WHERE SHE WORKED AS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER. SEVEN YEARS LATER KIRK IS IN LETHBRIDGE. IT SEEMS SHE KNEW PEOPLE LIVING IN TABER, INCLUDING DR. ALFRED HAMMAN AND HIS SISTER MRS. SYLVIA GIDMAN, WHO CAME FROM HER HOMELAND IN ENGLAND SO CHOSE TO VISIT. THE CHARM OF THE PRAIRIES AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA ENTICED HER TO STAY. KIRK LIVED IN THE VICTORIA MANSION AND THE TRAVELLER'S AID SOCIETY BUILDING AND SHE TAUGHT ART CLASSES AT THE YMCA FOR A FEW DOLLARS A MONTH." KIRK PASSED AWAY IN LETHBRIDGE IN 1953. HANDMADE BAG MADE OF 3 SECTIONS OF STRIPS OF ABOUT 5 INCHES (APPROX. 13 CM) EACH. IT IS RED WITH BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN, AND RAW MATERIAL ACCENTS. THE TRIM AT THE TOP OF THE BAG IS BLUE WITH A HANDLE OF THE SAME FABRIC ON EITHER SIDE. THERE IS A STRIP OF RAW, NOT PATTERNED FABRIC AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG. BOTH SIDES OF THE BAG HAVE THE SAME ARRANGEMENT OF PATTERNED STRIPS. THERE IS ONE SEAM CONNECTING THE FRONT AND THE BACK OF THE BAG ON BOTH SIDES. THE INSIDE IS UNLINED. GOOD TO VERY GOOD CONDITION. THERE IS SOME STITCHING COMING LOOSE AT VARIOUS POINTS OF THE PATTERNING.

THE KONKINS WERE A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY FROM THE TOWN OF SHOULDICE, ALBERTA, NEAR CALGARY. THEY AND MANY OTHER RUSSIAN FAMILIES COMPOSED THAT TOWN’S DOUKHOBOR COLONY. IT WAS THERE WILLIAM KONKIN MARRIED ELIZABETH WISHLOW. IN 1928 THEIR DAUGHTER, ELSIE WAS BORN. THEY LATER MOVED TO A FARM IN VAUXHALL, ALBERTA. THE PRECEDING AND FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM A TWO-PART INTERVIEW WITH DONOR ELSIE MORRIS, WHICH WAS CONDUCTED BY COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ON FEBRUARY 17, 2016. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION COMES FROM FAMILY HISTORIES AND TEXTS PROVIDED BY THE DONOR. A FULL HISTORY OF THE KONKIN FAMILY CAN BE FOUND WITH THE RECORD P20160003001. A STATEMENT WRITTEN BY MORRIS ATTACHED TO THE BAG STATES THAT THE MATERIAL OF THE BAG ORIGINATES FROM THE 1870S. THE STATEMENT READS: “THIS BAG WAS HAND WOVEN IN STRIPS [THAT WERE USED] TO SEW ON THE BOTTOM OF PETTICOATS. THE GIRLS AT THAT TIME HAD TO HAVE A TROUSEUA [SIC] TO LAST A LIFETIME BECAUSE AFTER MARRIAGE THERE WOULD BE NO TIME TO MAKE CLOTHES SO WHAT THEY MADE WAS STURDY. THEY STARTED ON THEIR TROUSEUS [SIC] AS SOON AS THEY COULD HOLD A NEEDLE. WHEN IT WAS HAYING TIME THE GIRLS WENT OUT INTO THE FIELD TO RAKE THE HAY. THEY WORE PETTICOATS OF LINEN TO WHICH THESE BANDS WERE SEWN. THE LONG SKIRTS WERE PICKED UP AT THE SIDES AND TUCKED INTO THE WAISTBANDS SO THAT THE BOTTOMS OF THE PETTICOATS WERE ON DISPLAY.” “THESE BANDS WERE ORIGINALLY MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER’S WHO CAME OUT OF RUSSIA WITH THE DOUKHOBOR SETTLEMENT IN 1899. THEY WERE PASSED ON TO MY MOTHER, ELIZABETH KONKIN, WHO MADE THEM INTO A BAG IN THE 1940S” THE STRIPS THAT MAKE UP THE BAG SERVED A UTILITARIAN PURPOSE WHEN SEWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PETTICOATS. IN THE INTERVIEW, MORRIS EXPLAINS: “… THESE STRIPS ARE VERY STRONG. THEY’RE LIKE CANVAS. THEY WERE SEWN ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE LADY’S PETTICOATS AND THEY WORE A SKIRT ON TOP OF THE PETTICOATS. THESE STRIPS LASTED A LIFETIME, IN FACT MORE THAN ONE LIFETIME BECAUSE I’VE GOT THEM NOW. THEY WOULD TUCK THE SKIRTS INTO THEIR WAISTBAND ON THE SIDE SO THEIR PETTICOATS SHOWED AND THEY WERE TRYING TO PRESERVE THEIR SKIRTS NOT TO GET CAUGHT IN THE GRAIN. THE GIRLS LIKED TO WEAR THEM TO SHOW OFF BECAUSE THE BOYS WERE THERE AND THEY ALWAYS WORE THEIR VERY BEST SUNDAY CLOTHES WHEN THEY WENT CUTTING WHEAT OR GRAIN." “[THE FABRIC] CAME FROM RUSSIA. WITH THE AREA WHERE THEY CAME FROM IS NOW GEORGIA AND THEY LIVED ABOUT SEVEN MILES NORTH OF THE TURKISH BORDER, THE PRESENT DAY TURKISH BORDER… [THE DOUKHOBORS] CAME TO CANADA IN 1897 AND 1899.” MORRIS EXPLAINS THAT SURPLUS FABRIC WOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO CANADA FROM RUSSIA BY HER MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER FOR FUTURE USE AND TO AID THE GIRLS IN MAKING THEIR TROUSSEAUS: “THE TROUSSEAU THE GIRLS MADE HAD TO LAST THEM A LIFETIME BECAUSE THEY WOULDN’T HAVE TIME BUT RAISING CHILDREN TO SEWING THINGS. SEWING MACHINES WERE UNKNOWN THEN.” THE BANDS OF FABRIC THAT MAKE UP THE BAG WOULD HAVE BEEN REMAINS NEVER USED FROM ELIZABETH KONKIN’S TROUSSEAU. SHE HAND WOVE THE BAG WHILE SHE WAS LIVING IN SHOULDICE. THE BAG WAS USED BY MORRIS’ MOTHER TO STORE HER KNITTING SUPPLIES. WHEN MORRIS ACQUIRED THE BAG IN THE 1990S, IT MAINTAINED A SIMILAR PURPOSE: “WELL I USED TO CARRY MY STUFF FOR THE WEAVER’S GUILD BUT NOW I DON’T USE IT FOR ANYTHING. IT’S VERY HANDY YOU KNOW IT DOESN’T WEAR OUT.” THERE WAS ONLY ONE BAG MADE OUT OF THESE REMNANTS BY MORRIS’ MOTHER.
