History / Biographical
The Canadian Federation of University Women - Lethbridge & District (CFUW) is a voluntary, self-funded organization for women who graduated from university in Canada. The national branch of this organization, Canadian Federation of University Women, was started in 1919, and has since grown to include over 100 regional clubs across the country. The Lethbridge area of the organization was started on May 13, 1944 with 36 members. According to their mission statement, the CFUW has worked to enhance women’s and girls’ status across the globe and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace. The purpose of the organization was to provide an opportunity for intellectual activities, friendship and social activities among university graduates in the Lethbridge community. They worked to encourage and sustain members in an intelligent interest in public affairs and to encourage a more active participation in such affairs by qualified women. They provide scholarships through the University of Lethbridge to students of high academic standing. They are actively involved in local and national political and social issues, and they work to provide for the well-being of their members and women across the globe. CFUW has membership fees, governing body and duties, that included holding positions on their standing committees, and actively participating in meetings, elections, dissolutions of the group. They hold monthly meetings, Christmas parties, spring banquets and president’s teas. They also attend conferences such as those in Kelowna B.C. and St. John’s Newfoundland. CFUW works to encourage the life-long learning of women and girls and to educate and empower young women and girls as active members of society.

History / Biographical
The Lethbridge Musical Theatre grew out of a series of concerts started in 1962 by the Lethbridge Symphony Association. 'Review 62' (later 'Southern Showcase') was a variety show that featured popular music by the symphony orchestra and chorus, as well as performances by other groups and soloists from southern Alberta. The success of the performances sparked discussion about the possibility of staging Broadway musicals, and Lethbridge Musical Theatre (LMT) was formed as an adjunct to the Lethbridge Symphony Association. The association continued until 1968, when LMT became an independent organization. Founders of LMT included Albert Rodnunsky, Dick Mells, Gordon Moir, Douglas Card and Ross Whitmore. In the early years of the organization, three people stand out for their creative talents and leadership of LMT: Muriel Jolliffe (choreographer), Dick Mells (producer and director) and Albert Rodnunsky (musical director). Local amateur talent was occasionally supplemented by professional performers brought in for specific shows. In the early years, most of the musicians who accompanied the performances were members of the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. After 1968 however, when LMT became an independent group, more and more of the musicians were recruited from local school band instructors and the students who played in those bands. The Lethbridge Musical Theatre has been a theatre company for the last 50 years. The company has put on yearly shows and other smaller productions since the inception, and they perform mainly at the Yates Memorial Centre.
