History / Biographical
The Canadian Federation of University Women - Lethbridge & District (CFUW) is a voluntary, self-funded organization for women who graduated from university in Canada. The national branch of this organization, Canadian Federation of University Women, was started in 1919, and has since grown to include over 100 regional clubs across the country. The Lethbridge area of the organization was started on May 13, 1944 with 36 members. According to their mission statement, the CFUW has worked to enhance women’s and girls’ status across the globe and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace. The purpose of the organization was to provide an opportunity for intellectual activities, friendship and social activities among university graduates in the Lethbridge community. They worked to encourage and sustain members in an intelligent interest in public affairs and to encourage a more active participation in such affairs by qualified women. They provide scholarships through the University of Lethbridge to students of high academic standing. They are actively involved in local and national political and social issues, and they work to provide for the well-being of their members and women across the globe. CFUW has membership fees, governing body and duties, that included holding positions on their standing committees, and actively participating in meetings, elections, dissolutions of the group. They hold monthly meetings, Christmas parties, spring banquets and president’s teas. They also attend conferences such as those in Kelowna B.C. and St. John’s Newfoundland. CFUW works to encourage the life-long learning of women and girls and to educate and empower young women and girls as active members of society.
